I remember seeing both of my grandmothers wearing housecoats. They’d come home from work or church, take off their clothes and put on a housecoat to cook Sunday dinner and/or to avoid their “good” clothes being soiled. #Caftans #Dusters and #Housecoats were also very popular dress for Saturday morning cleaning. It wasn’t unusual (where I grew up) to see someone’s mother or grandmother at the market on a Saturday morning with rollers in their hair, a housecoat and slippers. For most wearing a housecoat was really about comfort-short of walking around in the nude-and not ruining your good clothes. However, in this age of fast fashion does the notion of “good” clothes still apply. Well anyway there have been many days I wanted to come home, strip off the bra and put on a good housecoat. This memory has stayed with me along with a desire to buy a nice housecoat. I’ve purchased several versions over the years but, nothing quite #sistahfriendly (roomy, nice print, natural fabrics). And I’m still waiting on André Leon Talley’s line of caftans to come out. Well you know the saying if you can’t find it make it. I finished my first housecoat sample. Still tweaking this first pattern and working on other variations to keep the design very simple then on to grading. Making this pattern in generous sizes. Planning to sew more samples in contemporary and ethnic fashion fabrics. Tell me would you buy/wear one of these housecoats? Which design details would you like to see? (collars, sleeve length, pockets, fabric, etc.) Do you have a #housecoatmemory ?

Royal Wedding Inspired dessert. Elderflower and Lemon Cupcakes. A simple recipe that’s quick, easy and yummy! INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup granulated sugar 1 tbsp lemon zest 2 eggs 2 tbsp elderflower syrup 2/3 cup 2% milk ICING 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 1/4 cups icing sugar 1/4 cup elderflower syrup 2 tbsp lemon juice INSTRUCTIONS • PREHEAT oven to 350F. • LINE a 12-cup muffin pan with paper cups. Stir flour with baking powder and salt. Beat ½ cup butter with granulated sugar and lemon zest, using an electric mixer on medium, in a large bowl, 2 min. Beat in eggs and 2 tbsp elderflower syrup until combined. Gradually beat in half of flour mixture, then half of milk. Repeat additions. Divide between muffin cups. • BAKE in centre of oven until a cake tester inserted in centre of cupcakes comes out clean, 18 to 20 min. Transfer to a rack to cool completely. • FOR icing: Beat 1 cup butter and icing sugar, using an electric mixer on medium, in a large bowl, until light and fluffy. Beat in ¼ cup elderflower syrup and lemon juice. • ICE each cupcake with a spoon or piping bags. Decorate with edible flowers, if desired.
