There's something in his gaze. She's seen it before, in King's Landing, though sparingly and only ever directed at her. It isn't a softness, but rather an intensity that seeps into her, makes her feel safe. She's glad of it when he smiles, thankful he knows not to take her teasing to heart. The scales will never balance after all he's done for her and he assures her as much, even if he is joking. Everything she has in life is because of him, including life itself.

I'm actually so pissed? I reported this post for "non-consensual intimate imagery" because the entire blog depicts AI generated images and videos of actresses in sexual poses, usually with each other. Obviously none of these actresses consented to these and it's a disgusting violation. But because the ACTS aren't non-consensual and I'm not one of the people in the images, my complaint isn't valid and they get to keep this crap up. Tell me that makes sense?

It's haunting, the way Victor's Village stands untouched by the war, cold and empty: a symbol of Capitol luxury at its finest and Effie frowns at the thought. It's the first time she's visited since the war ended. She's been busy, certainly, helping to reorganize structure in the Capitol and acting as a face for change and hope amongst her jaded peers. But more importantly it felt...wrong? Wrong for anything Capitol, herself included, to step foot in Twelve as it worked to rebuild and start fresh. She isn't unaware of her part in the past; for years, her presence in this District brought grief and death.

But behind them, when she turns her back to the Village and faces the debris of Twelve, TRUE District Twelve, she sees change. The bulk of the rubble had been cleared, anything that could be lifted out without equipment, and the once blackened ground was spotted with bits of green, new life forcing its way through the once heavily walked paths. Homes are being rebuilt beyond, the fences stripped, and in the far distance she knows nothing stands between the citizens of Twelve and the borders. Effie nods and inhales, pretending there isn't a shakiness to her breath, turning to Haymitch with a soft, proud smile.

Effie sighs, exhasperated, as if talking to a toddler. " I see the Tributes, Haymitch, yes. "

The walls of the room (the one they are very much unauthorized to be in right now) are lined with monitors, different camera angles encompasing different portions of the arena, and at the very top are twenty-four screens showcasing the individual tributes' photos, their scores and locations....many of which boldly labeled "DECEASED" across their fragile little faces.

This is their eighth year working together as Mentor and Escort and without fail he's done this at some point during the Games for the past three: tried to make her see something beyond what the cameras showed. It's a harsh reality of the Games, the carnage, the loss, and it isn't as if she doesn't know that! Truly Effie just hates looking at it.

Becaue it's unavoidable.

" We are not supposed to be in here, Haymitch, " she chirps, taking hold of his arm and attempting to pull him from the room before they're caught. " We don't have to go back to the event, our Tributes didn't make it past the cornucopia...again. " She swallows, tries to shake the memory as she tugs him again and returns to her usual, chipper voice. " We can go back to the penthouse and you can sleep this off. Terra shakes her head, trying to pretend she isn't stifling a laugh behind her glass because whatever he said definitely WASN'T FUNNY. Except she is. And it was. But that's their rhythm: he says something ridiculous and she pretends she doesn't find it amusing. She's pretty sure he can tell though, otherwise he wouldn't keep trying to make her laugh, right? And he does, pretty consistently, though she can't tell if that's for her or if that's just who he is as a person. Either way, she's gonna make him work a lot harder before she'll admit out loud that he MIGHT be funny.

Then there's a pause and he's looking at her, like he's considering something less funny. And when he starts to lean in and her eyes instinctively flicker to his lips, any amusement she felt before is definitely gone. She doesn't think about it, he's moving toward her and she leans in to meet him.

He hesitates and tilts his head up, the heat from his lips pressing against her forehead for a long moment. Its softer than expected and Terra closes her eyes, let's the gesture sink in before opening them with a confused blink as he pulls away. There's a moment where she realizes her own lips are still slightly parted and she swallows, straightens back into place and shakes her head again, trying to ignore the way her face is suddenly hot, not because he's kissed her forehead, but because she'd leaned in, surprising herself.

Maybe he hadn't noticed.

Terra can picture that green bear, clear as day, no matter how hard she tries not to in this moment.

She's asked herself all these questions before. Why does she stay? Where could she go? Is she a hero again now? Does she WANT to be? Would they ever let her? " ....Like you said, " she sighs, shrugging and stretching her shoulders as she shifts her back into a better position, less slouched, " It's just kind of hard to leave, even if most of the memories are bad. " Not all of them were bad, of course. She remembers the good times, the fun. The problem is the bad times that seep in around the edges, the moments she's ashamed of taking part in and afraid of repeating: the ones she knows can't be fully forgiven. And beyond that, the memories are foggy. She can't tell the difference between a vague memory and the story fed to her by Slade. A home before. A family. A life.
