Catching up (finally) | Zelda & Malon
Relief momentarily graced the redheadâs features again as Zelda offered her own help for Link only before fading into a look of worry againâgood; that was good, wasnât it? Malon shook her head, smiling weakly at the princess. âThatâs kind of ye, but donât get yerself into any trouble. I canât let ye stick your neck out like that, now can I?â She chuckled and waved her hand, attempting to sound reassuring. âCleaninâ up Linkâs messes has always been my thing so donât ye worry none.â
Malonâs head inclined towards the noblewoman with interest as she told her⌠brief recollection of the past half year. She frowned at how little there was in her statement, a surge of bitterness aimed at the king that rolled in her chest. Zelda hadnât rightfully deserved to be locked up the way she had been and the farmhand could only sniff angrily at thatânot entirely trusting the volume of her voice to outright insult the King in their current company.
Her expression, however, softened as Zelda voiced her worries about Malon. A dry chuckle fell off the freckled girlâs lips, her head tipping lazily to one side as her brows lifted at the princess. âNah, I donât sâpose itâll be lettinâ up either. Not to be rude, Zelda, but what do ye expect me to do?â she asked, rolling a shoulder as she spoke. âThereâs nowhere else to go, is there? Itâs not like I can just run away to the surface. I got a job to do here. My daddyâs here. My whole life is up here on this rock thing, ainât it?â
Malon paused and then, with the best intentions of lightening the unpleasant topic, she leaned over to gently nudge the princess with her elbow. ââSides, Link would get into too much trouble without me around and you wouldnât get into enough of it, I reckon.â
Zelda blinked, then laughed, scrunching up her nose in mock indignity. "Now, now, when did I ask you to turn tail and make for the proverbial hills?
"Unfortunately," she continued, "it was more of a statement than any sort of suggestion. If I knew a way to keep you from getting tangled up in the sort of nastiness this Kingdom seems to deal in, trust me, you'd have heard it a long time ago." She shook her head. "I trust your wit enough to know if anyone on these islands can take care of themselves, it's you, but worrying just appears to be a part of the Princess job description, walled off as I am." She turned to give Malon a wry smile. "You'll just have to humor me on that one, I'm afraid."
At the last comment, she had to grin. "I'll tell you what, I'll put in an honest effort to get into trouble if you keep up an honest effort to stay out of it, and we can call ourselves even." Zelda could recognize the end of the path now, as the pair of horses continued to tread along. She almost gave in to the impulse to slow hers; these visits always seemed to go far too quickly. "We'll have to be sure to meet up every now and then, of course," she concluded, "to compare."
