Today I couldn't help but think of the path I've traversed to be here... in this quiet season. My best friend since high school once told me that maybe all the heartbreak and disappoint was so I could write and relate. I don't know if that is true, but I do know that I've felt compelled and encouraged to set down my lessons. For myself. Maybe for others, too. And now that it's quiet and calm I think this is the time for integration. For reflection. We become who we are because of all the pieces of our story. The good and the bad and the boring. And what grows from the mud is beautiful.

I watched an older couple dancing and found myself wondering what had shaped their relationship into something that looked so effortless. That question reminded me of a science experiment involving plants... and led me to think differently about the people, ideas, and relationships we allow to nourish us. Because in the end, we're all watering something.

We often hear that prosperity will "trickle down." But what happens when wealth no longer circulates? I recently came across a quote that made me pause, "There is no such thing as trickle-down economics, only modern-day fiefdoms." Whether or not you agree with that statement, it led me to ask a different question: What happens when wealth stops moving and begins to pool? "The Dammed Economy" is my exploration of the ideas of ownership, opportunity, wealth concentration, and why I think a river may be the best metaphor for understanding our modern economy. This isn't an argument for or against wealth, but more so an exploration of what happens when capital accumulates faster than it circulates, and what that might mean for the rest of us.

Sometimes the opportunity isn't meant to become your life. Sometimes it's meant to show you that you're finally ready for a different one. I recently found myself imagining a future I hadn't previously given myself permission to envision. Although that particular opportunity didn't materialize, something else did. I realized I was willing. That realization changed me far more than the opportunity ever could have. Today's essay is about disappointment, possibility, and why some doors open just long enough to remind us that we are capable of walking through them. ♥

For a long time, I thought the answer was that people simply needed to budget better. Work harder. Spend less. Make smarter choices. But the older I get, the more I wonder if that explanation is too simple. After twenty-two years of teaching, I expected to feel further from the edge than I do. Not wealthy. Not extravagant. Just... more secure. Instead, I find myself asking a different question: What happens when the cost of simply existing continues to rise faster than people's ability to keep up? Many of us think people-pleasing only shows up in unhealthy relationships. But sometimes it follows us into the healthy ones, too. Sometimes we stop silencing ourselves out of fear of rejection and start silencing ourselves out of admiration, respect, or the belief that someone else must know better. In my latest piece, I write about a recent moment that forced me to look at a pattern I thought I’d already healed: how over-understanding the people we love can accidentally become a tool for self-erasure. When we hold back our hurts to protect a relationship from discomfort, we are also withholding the information someone needs to know us fully. "Dating currently feels difficult because women are looking for men that don’t exist yet, and men are looking for women who don’t exist anymore." I read that on Threads recently and it stopped me in my tracks. As I've stepped back into the dating world after my own deep evolution, I realized the truth is much more complex than simple bitterness. The reality of modern dating is that both genders are grieving from opposite sides of the room. Women are grieving the years lost to self-abandonment; men are grieving the loss of a predictable landscape. Neither side is malicious, we are simply caught in the gears of a massive cultural transition, and both sides are struggling in ways that deserve to be seen. That's what my latest post explores.

Five years ago I wrote this and… I still stand by it. We are taught to mistake intensity for love. Butterflies. Chaos. Longing. Emotional whiplash. (Also apparently butterflies are sometimes just your nervous system saying “this is familiar, not safe” ... thanks bestie for that update 😂) But what if love isn’t meant to feel like a battlefield? I used to think my fierce independence was my greatest strength. It took me a long time to realize that sometimes, hyper-independence is just trauma in a trench coat. It’s the exhausting mental labor of holding all the strings because you’re terrified that if you put even one down, no one else will pick it up.
