Something new is coming.

Plain and simple, lethargy sucks.

Seldom are the things that allow me to escape the lack of motivation, and the guilt of making little to no progression towards my goals.

The easiest task is counting the one’s I haven’t done, or that I would’ve loved to have started.

“I’ll try again tomorrow, gotta take it day by day”.

Wishful thinking, that you may have felt the sun’s vibrant embrace

that traveled through the slight breeze

on this new day.

An amethyst on my chest,

lays against my weighted heart

while I chase this breeze with adrenaline through my veins.

I’ll chase tomorrow’s,

wishfully thinking of you. 

One pen stroke, one push at a time.

Let’s keep this one short and sweet...we won.

Not our favorite team at the Bowl or hometown fighter,

but the community of skateboarders within Omaha, Nebraska.

Tension built inside of City Hall this morning as many awaited for 3 representatives of the skate community, one being Conny Franko, for an update if a resolve could be reached for Lynch Park becoming a sanctioned skate space.

Though the results of this Parks Department meeting did not go the way many intended to, the upcoming afternoon would hold much more in store when  Franko met with Mayor Jean Stothert and official Brook Bench.

Through the combined efforts of every person, organization, and the Nebraska Public Skatepark Council, the Lynch Park DIY is here to stay and will even be equipped with city approved obstacles in addition to the obstacles previously confiscated.

Despite the many shady details and important variables overlooked in this entire ordeal, I truly believe the power within skateboarding showed to be much stronger than anyone outside of the culture anticipated.

A hiatus broken nonetheless, but for a reason far greater than myself.

On February 22nd, 2020, the local skaters of all ages and members alike joined together at the James F. Lynch DIY Park in South Omaha. 

This congregation was made in order to show the city that the once abandoned tennis court is a legitimate space not only for local skateboarders, but anyone with the capacity to express oneself, regardless of their choice of sport. 

On that day many pitched in to provide food, drink, entertainment, and a heartfelt atmosphere for the community along with a classic skate jam packed with skaters varying in experience. 

In September of 2018, I experienced for the first time an event that gave back to the skate community of Omaha and expected nothing in return. I witnessed several kids who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford new parts, or an entire skateboard if it were not for the combined efforts of companies and organizations like Silo Skate Shop, Precision Skate Shop , Backyard Skateboards, ATM Skateboards, Civic Nebraska and Rabble Mill. 

These are not the first times that James F. Lynch Park has been the home of community events like this one. And in all my bias, I am able to say that this space would have been able to provide the community with a safe space for future gatherings large and small. 

On February 24th, 2020, videos and images surfaced of city construction crews tearing down the ramps and obstacles at Lynch Park despite the communities efforts. 

Variables like the extreme lack of public transportation from parts of South Omaha to places like Seymour Smith Skatepark, Roberts Skatepark, or any other sanctioned area in the city to skate along with sidewalks to safely guide children, teens, and adult skaters to the destinations puts the ball in the court of Omaha, Nebraska. 

There is much more to be said and to be heard, but not just from me. Many voices in this community span the age range from Elementary School children to Adults nearing or past their late 20′s and beyond.

Twenty years later, and the way this video was crafted still speaks volumes.

On many different levels, 

from where skateboarding as an entire movement was headed, the aesthetic skateboard films put on the table, to the bar being raised for professional skateboarding. 

Attention to detail is highly favored when watching Jamie Thomas’s  ‘Misled Youth’ part.

The way each clip is paired with the music inside of Thomas’s editing style is fused with the high stake skating shown in the footage.

This tasteful sequencing technique allows the viewer to absorb the magnitude of Jamie’s spot annihilation in peaks and valleys.

Dylan Hepworth embodied the mission that is downhill skating while painting a luxurious suburban blacktop road. 

Hepworth’s glide control paired with an aggressive approach to speed in this clip is what makes this a certified re-watch.

Though this footage is easily digestible to due it’s runtime, speed is the name of the game.

This type of cinematography within skateboarding films provides viewers with questions and perspectives like none other. 

The Drifters are comprised of Tom Knox, #SylvainTognelli, Nick Jensen, Mike Arnold, #ChrisJones, Remy Taveira, and Casper Booker.

The eye of the skateboarder is an art expression in itself, and each individual in this film series showcases a perplexing brilliance with their art. 

These expressions are sewn together with an extremely elaborate film and editing style by Jacob Harris.

Don’t be shy to rewind a few seconds every time you’re blown away, or the entire video for that matter.

Paul Rodriguez, In Bloom ( Transworld, 2002)

The intro speaks for itself, while P-Rod begins his trick bag dispatch.

If you don’t know Paul Rodriguez’s stance off the top, you’re in for a mind bender. If you know his stance off the top, you’re just as floored.

Rodriguez put on a clinic with 4 and a half minutes of non-stop hits.

Gaps of all shapes and sizes, hand rail mayhem, and stealthy ledge demolition are mixed in abundance. The precision in Paul’s stance before and after each trick is what I always take away after every watch.

Nollie Back 180 followed by Switch Back 180, Switch Back Tailside to Bigspin out, or any other trick in this video is worthy of observation.

Easily one of the many skaters who blossomed from that decade with their skateboarding, and continued to manufacture solid skate footage following his future.

One skate part I have easily found myself re-watching has been David Gravette’s footage in Transwolrd’s “And Now” video. 

The video was released in 2008, where at the time of this post it is 2019. 

11 years later, his unique style stands timeless. Noticeably from start to finish, Gravette is no stranger to buckling in for a handrail session.

Lines comprised of wallies, no-comply’s, clean flip tricks and an impressive bag of ledge tricks & combos. 

This is all to be gathered with Gravette’s transition skills. Fluid, fast, and gnarly. 

Additionally, David enjoys mixing transition tricks with street and vice versa. One beautiful example is the kick flip nose grab wall plant, back into the tranny. 

Or the stupendously huge indy grab wall ride. Seriously.

All these skills are displayed while ‘Not Easy’ by Consortium fluently guides Gravette’s rampage on spots.
