“The public bathroom is a gauntlet every butch must run. As I entered the women’s room at the back of the McDonald’s, two elderly ladies were on their way out. One of them was struggling with her walker as her counterpart washed and dried her hands. I did my best to slip by them and into a stall, afraid of kickstarting a ‘This is the women’s room’ confrontation I didn’t have time to finish. “Let her by,” the hand-drying woman goaded as I edged past, “…she looks so nice.” “She does,” her friend answered, a kind murmur of approval that warmed me from my blistered toes to my blush-reddened ears.
