Firebrick Sea Star | Asterodiscides truncates
(by billunder)
A majestic rare albino whale shark graces the ocean
Sometimes, Nature puts on a show that leaves Man awestruck. And these spectacular displays by two denizens of the deep left all who saw them beguiled by their grace and beauty. Divers were stunned by the sight of a 33ft albino whale shark as it glided through the waters off the coast of Darwin, an island in the Galapagos group. (Full Story)
This is the world’s second biggest fish tanks - so big that it’s even been named the Kuroshio Sea. Located in Okinawa, Japan, the aquarium houses an enormous tank that is some ten metres deep, 35 metres wide and 27 metres long. It is home to a dazzling variety of all the species found thriving around Okinawa, including giant soaring manta rays and the daddy of them all, the world’s biggest fish, the whale shark. The appearance of the main viewing room is dazzling, and the window is so clear that each year millions of visitors can believe, for a moment, that they have stepped into a magical underwater world.

This is magnificent.
The Ocean Array Plan. Devised by 19yo Boyan Slat, this passive system, if installed, could clean up both The Great Pacific Garbage Patch & The North Atlantic Garbage Patch. Sort of like an anchored Roomba for the ocean…

"Although extensive feasibility studies are currently being conducted, it has been estimated that through the selling of plastic retrieved over the five years, the money would surpass the initial cost to execute the project. In other words, it may even be potentially profitable. Because the main deterrent to implement large scale cleanup projects is due to the financial cost, this solution could perhaps pave ways for future innovations of global cleanup to also be invented.”
This is huge.
I approve of this. Hopefully a system can be set up where all profits from this project go back into cleanup efforts

This squat lobster (Galathea pilosa), is a very rare species found in the shallow waters of French Polynesia. It is unique in its bright colouring, but its flattened body with the tail curled under the thorax is typical for its genus. Image: Moorea Biocode

The Blue Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus), one of the world’s rarest and most beautiful mollusks
So of course I read up on it. It’s even more beautiful when it’s in the water, not collapsed like it is on the original pic. It also freakin’ eats Portuguese Man o’Wars. They are also hermaphroditic because, damn, they so pretty, no way are they gonna hit anything but theyselves.
Damn it octopus are cool. Especially this Blanket Octopus, Tremoctopus.

Orca (Orcinus orca) female swimming underwater, Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico
by Hiroya Minakuchi
Gymnosomata, commonly known as Sea Angels. An apt name- the sea angels are the ethereal, translucent, fluttering angels of the sea.
In hard scientific terms, they’re small swimming sea slugs, but we’ll pass over that for now and just admire how delicately beautiful these wonderful creatures are.
