if youre going to have pets, their needs are a TOP priority

if you cant afford vet bills, PLEASE dont get pets.  

its not about poorer people not “deserving” pets its literally just. a shelter may provide better care than you can 

not taking your animals to the vet is medical neglect and its cruel

their needs come above your wants because theyre living breathing creatures who depend on you

My childhood cat was allowed to develop untreated and undetected intestinal tumors that led to a slow and painful death for her because it was seen as unnecessary to take animals to the vet in my family even if they are outright suffering.

If you cannot afford to take your pets to the vet and cannot set aside emergency funds for your pets, do not get a pet. It is animal abuse to not seek out medical attention for your pets when they need it, just like it would be child abuse to allow a human child to suffer untreated from any illness or injury.

Having a pet is a luxury, not a right. It’s not about deserving a pet, it’s about the responsibility of caring for another creature to the absolute best of your ability and being responsible enough to find that animal a new and better home if you find you can’t meet its standards on your own. I’m sick of hearing people say it’s classist to say you shouldnt have a pet if you can’t afford it.
