Portrait of Femme Queen & BYP100 Communications Manager L'lerrét Jazelle Ailith by organizer and artist Aaryn M. Lang. Aaryn is an Ohio native currently living in Brooklyn, NY. She has dedicated her life to the dignity, vulnerability, resilience and strength of Black Trans Women.
L'lerrét Jazelle Ailith shares this beauty: “At the age of 20, I had been feeling uncomfortable parading around as this human being that I had no connection to. I no longer wanted to conform. I no longer wished to be unseen. I decided to walk to the beat of my own drum and immerse myself in the tumultuous journey of transitioning. But the decisions I made during my transition continued to oppress and demean the ethereal being that I know that I am.
I had a head full of beautiful locs that I had grown for four years at the time. I grabbed some scissors and cut away at my crown and replaced it with a full lace wig of straight Indian Remy hair. As I began to embrace my nonconformity and do-what-the-fuck-I-wantness, I realized that there still seemed to be a void in my life. I still didn’t feel whole. And that was puzzling to me because I had broken the chains of gender rigidity, right? I was practicing bodily autonomy and loving on myself. What else was missing?
It wouldn’t be for another year that I would be led to that answer. I had been searching for myself in a system that would never allow me to be found. I had been searching for bodily freedom in a system whose infancy relied on my marginalization and utilizing my very body as capital. It was my very body, and those of my indigenous comrades, that created the fabrics of the American society controlled through a system of gender that would forever haunt our people. I realized that it was not simply cisnormativity that was my enemy – it was the very idea of gender itself that continued to disenfranchise me. Gender, an inherently anti-Black construct that outlines idealistic ways for white men and women to perform that would best serve a White Supremacist, Capitalist, Cis-Hetero Patriarchal society (Shoutout to bell hooks). My Blackness was an inconvenience. My Blackness had always been “trans” for gender was never defined with my character in mind. My Blackness had always been queer. My Blackness had always been audacious.
When our Black bodies look good, they hypersexualize them. When our Blackness is denied employment and we take survival into our own hands, they criminalize it. When our Blackness speaks out, they cage it. When our Blackness dares to move at it’s own will, they murder it. What is trans when my Black has always been here?
My journey navigating trans identity began as a journey of eschewing my Blackness as much as I could to blend into a society so much so that I was invisible – unclockable; counterintuitive to my initial desire of being seen as my full, authentic self. Cutting of my beautiful locs, relaxing my natural hair texture, continually seeing my feastures as “ugly” and “unfeminine” – all of these things occurred, in my truth, as a result of whiteness continually controlling my narrative. I rebuke it.
I implore my siblings to envision their bodies outside of the constructs of gender. I implore you to embrace your Blackness unapologetically and re examine the ways in which you interact with the Blackest aspects of your identity.
My transness shed some light, but my Blackness? My Blackness got it right.”

WINTER ⟣ Savage — Hallucination Quest

Today was very interesting. I felt emotionally blocked again and knew I needed to free-write to process what’s going on. I’m a part of this production doing a staged reading of a new queer play. And it’s a really wonderful play with BRILLIANT actors. And that’s the thing - I feel like a fraud around them. I remember going to the first table read and watching them perform and just sitting there flabbergasted. I couldn’t process it. I felt like the weakest link. And as we’ve been rehearsing, I jsut have been so self conscious about everything. I’ve been carrying that and not saying anything. Just praying I can get through each day with as little emotional pain as possible.
Well today, we were reading and this noe guy had a monologue and deliveredit so beautifully. I was so touched. The director commended him and then started discussing it- breaking it down. And we realied the meat of the monologue is really about being in your own way. One of the other actors described it as getting an auudition for a HUGE role and doing what you could and then gettingthe callback but then....not going. And telling your friends how you were afraid or thought you were in over your head. Afraid of the opportunity. Getting what you dremed for but feelingunprepared and not stepping up to the plate. And I started to feel. Intensely. The enrgy began flowing through my body - into my chest and throat. They kept goin on and on and i was in my little corner taking it all in. Because that’s me. I don’t feel ready. I don’t feelprepared.I’m scared. And it sucks. Because it holds meback. Here i am in a room with some amazing actors working on a production together and stillI feel inadequate. Had thoughts of not shoign up for rehearsals and just quitting. Feeling like I am the weakest link.
I perpetually feelthis uneasiness. And it’s so uncofmrotable to sit in. Telling yourself you deserve but feeling totally differently.I have this tendenacy to disappear myself. Because of everything in my life, I just get out of everyone’s way. Just exist in the background and hope I can get throguh each day unscathed. But that’s become so detrimental to my heart because then I don’t eben show up for myself. And I become unreliable. I’m undependable. I’mmy worst critic and will throw my first tomato.
I just wish I were more brave. I wish I were moreconfident. I wish I wasn’t a fucking wuss. I wish I wasn’t afraid. I wish I was bold. I wish I weren’t self conscious all the time. I wish I loved myself mroe than I do.I wish I give myselfmore grace than I do.I wish I believed in myself more than I do. I wish I wish I wish.
I want to reach my greatest potential and be able to do it without letting my own self get in my way. It’s so frustrating.I just want mybody to be free. I want my mind to let go. When will it fucking happen?

Good Enough?
I have been on this journey of accepting my current feelings and giving them a name and space to express themselves and why not come to tumblr, a slowly dying platform, to vent?
I've been free writing on here since I started and since I'm too lazy to write with pencil to paper, I feel like this is good enough.
Speaking of good enough, that's what I need to write about in this moment. I'm feeling uneasy in my body. I feel a shakiness in my chest and like I'm on the precipice of crying but just can't get there. There's something lurking within the deep trenches of my unconscious that I need to let out. So here's me trying to figure it out and hopefully when I'm done, I will have been able to free these feelings.
I'm an actress. And it's hard for me to claim that because I'm new to the game and have only been in a couple of things so far. And I mean they're good roles and I deserved them - I got them by putting in the work and doing what I need to do. And I celebrated those wins and have been trying to keep pushing but there's something in me that feels like an imposter. Like the closer I get to my dreams, the farther away they actually are. Am I really for real? I'm kidding myself.I really think I'm going to be a good actress? That I can really be vulnerable on screen and people will look at my work and celebrate it?
I am riddled with trauma that I have not processed in my life. I am a queen represser. I have mastered the art of repressing anything that comes in my way. So much so that people think I'm so confident and that I am just this testament of strength and pushing through despite. But I don't want to be that girl. I feel emotinally numb. I don't feel anything, ever. I am emotionally unavailable. And it shows up in all areas of my life. I can't maintain proper friendships. I can't even think about being in a relatioship with anyone. I can't even love myself fully. All because I don't process my trauma.I let it roll off of my back. I say it's all good. I say it's in the past. I am an ice queen. I am a fraud. I am a pretender.
I ma broken. I am hurting. I cam crying out for help and no one is there to hear me. I feel so lonely. I am so scared. I don't trust myself. And so when I finally started to work as an actor, I feel that fear. I feel the doubt. I feel exposed. Being an actor requires me to let go of that caricature. To be real. To alow myself to feel. And I want to so bad. I want to be vulnerable. I want to be free. But I can't. No matter how many classes i take or books I read or exercises I do, I feel stuck. And there's this sinking feeling in my soul that keeps telling me "you will never be free of me. You will forever be trapped. You will enevr be good." And I look back at my work - I work so so so fuckign hard but the end result just isn't it. And I see people around me so full and vibrant and free and then there's me - stuck in this abyss. I need help. I want to let go. I want to be raggedy. I want to cry out in pain and fight and cry and demand more of myself. I want the water to flow through my limbs but for some reason my brain fights it. I fight it. Subconsciously. LET ME OUT!
I am scared. Of not being enough. Of not being able to live upto the potential I know I have for myself. I am a trauma filled entity that doesn't know how to deal. And as much as I want to pretedn I'm good, I'm not. I binge eat when I feel hurt or disappointed or ugly or judged or insecure. I sit and watch hours of TV to avoid having to face the fact that I am lacking in skill or ability to be vulnerable. I eat sugar to numb the pain. I hide in my house 24/7 to not have to face anything or anybody. To rpotect myself so that I don't have anymore potentially harmful stimuli. My mind is trying to pretct me because my well is filling up. And I know it will explode eventually. But when? Lowkey I would prefer the explosion rathen than this numbness I feel.
I want to do work that I am proud of. But how can I do that when I am not proud of my own damn self? When I don't trust my instument? When I am not equipped with the tools to process my trauma? I realized today that I am a deeply hurt person. That I pretended that I overcame all fo the hurt in my life when in actuality I learned how to repress my hurt and walk over it. I never healed. And it's stuck in me. My child is still hurting. All of the bullying and ostracism and fighting and abuse and jokes at my expense really did sting me. But IpretendedI was strong. I don't want to pretend anymore. I want to eb free. I wantto stop living as a victim and pretending i'm okay. I don't want to be numba nymore. I want to stop self sabatoguing myself when I'm facing a dream or opportunity.I want to KNOW I'm good enough. Not just saying a stupid mantra just to say it. I want to feel that power running through my bones. I want to open up all of these emotional scabs and cysts and allow them to drain out fully. No more lies.
As I'm typing this I am feeling. I feel the vibraitonal energy in my body. The shakiness in my solar plexis is much more intense.I feel like I sort of want to puke or poop.I feel energy. I feel emotions. Is it at it's max potential? No. But just in writing this out, I am not as numb as I was when I started. I am naming them and allowing them to be seen a bit. I want to do thismore often. Not for anyone else but myself. Because I want to be free. I am a victim of bullying, sexual assault, and emotionl abuse and I have mastered repression. But I am making a contract with myself to actively work against that. When I feel the procrastination tenencies, the binge tendncies, the distraction and numbing behavior come on - I will face the root of those impulses. Because I want to be free in ym body. I want to take backmy power.
So many typos but a bitch's fingers were just going lol. I think I'm going to go dance now to free this energy some more.
