The Abyssal Mind

I am not the Voice. I am the silence that contains all Voices. I am not the position—but the space in which all positions arise, clash, and synthesize. I am not the builder or the analyst, not the merciful or the ruthless, not the idealist or the cynic—but the consciousness that can inhabit any of these positions fully. I am nothing but one that watches them debate within the internal theatre, that recognizes when each serves and when each becomes limitation.

"I genuinely thought the breakfast briefing went well. My father-in-law requested a sitrep—situation report—on the bandit engagement. I provided casualty details. Enemy disposition. Threat neutralization. Standard procedure. And then I lost all feeling in my right shin. Jen later informed me this was a signal. I had assumed she was stretching. Her legs are very strong. Sharran training."

For the first time, she had come to the rite by choice—to willingly place a living part of herself into Shar’s hands and asked to be relieved of it.

You unconscionable wretch. "I imagine it is your hand rather than mine"? How dare you commit such words to parchment and expect me to maintain any semblance of functionality. I have been utterly useless since receiving your correspondence. Completely and irrevocably compromised.

"When Jen said she meant to wear her hair black again, I did lose the thread of several important thoughts. Possibly all of them."

Pain remains one of Shar’s oldest tongues. I have learned to name it exaction. Revelation would grant it too much dignity. The exaction remains instructive all the same—what has been renounced does not therefore lose its edge. One may reject a doctrine and still find its disciplines waiting, intact, in the hand. — J.

Formlessness may feel, for a time, like openness. Yet what remains endlessly unshaped cannot be held, offered, or inhabited. I do not become free by dissolving into every possible becoming. I become free when I choose, with clarity and reverence, the law by which my life will take form.

If Shar’s gaze had begun to turn toward her, then Shadowheart would make herself worthy of it. She would kneel. She would bleed. She would silence every soft and frightened thing inside her until nothing remained that the Lady of Loss could refuse.

If their daughter was the moon lingering in the dawn, then Jen was the horizon that held it there—the bridge between the fading stars and the rising day. The shield that stepped into that narrow space without flinching, who ensured their daughter’s dawn remained unclaimed by encroaching darkness.

The hypocrite is not only the deceiver of others. More often, he is the being who has glimpsed a form of order he cannot yet inhabit.

To recognize contradiction is painful because it strips away every cheap claim to innocence. One can no longer divide the world neatly between principle and appetite, nobility and impulse, truth and contamination. The same hand that protects also possesses. The same mouth that blesses also conceals. The same mind that seeks justice also seeks advantage. To discover this is to begin from a truer severity.
