This whole scene in Master of Mankind is interesting because, for one, it's the most blatant case of the Emperor adjusting his presentation to mirror people's expectations.

But also like...if you're trying to give an example in fiction of a creation perceiving its creator as a father while the creator, in turn, only views the creation as a curiosity/tool, most people would opt for Frankenstein. The Emperor instead uses Pinocchio, which is wild because Geppetto didn't make Pinocchio as a curiosity/tool. Pinocchio doesn't calls Geppetto "father" because he's just a creation imprinting on his creator. Pinocchio calls him that because Geppetto created him to be a son, Geppetto WANTS to be his dad.

So that poses the question: why is he citing Pinocchio, then.

If you're trying to embody a tech priests concept of the Omnissiah as a coldly utilitarian being who's utterly devoid of sentiment, why would you try to justify a seemingly sentimental choice as Very Rational Actually by citing one of the most sentimental examples of a creator and creation imaginable. Why wouldn't you frame yourself as Frankenstein.

Arkhan almost definitely doesn't know about Frankensten or Pinocchio, so yeah you can look him dead in the eyes and tell him some bullshit like "Pinocchio calls Geppetto father because that's just a creation trying to make sense of its relationship to its creator" and he won't know any different.

But is the Emperor citing Pinocchio because he knows he did create the Primarchs to be his sons, that he does want to be their father? Is he dropping a fuckin Easter Egg in his own explanation, knowing no one but him will ever actually understand the reference? Is this some "heh heh I'm the only one who will ever clock the real message here: that I do love my awful sons" shit?

Or did ADB just forget the plot of Pinocchio.
