In the Great Bear Rainforest, within the ancestral territory of the Kitasoo Xai Xai’s a beautiful melting pot of wildlife and ecosystems collide. It’s a sacred refuge for bears, wolves, cougars (mountain lions) on land, to name a few, and orcas and humpback whales at sea. What a beautiful experience it was to immerse myself in this remote magical realm of wilderness, guided by the keepers of wisdom of land & sea, indigenous communities. Native land stewarded by native people, the way it should be.

This massive black bear, probably the biggest black bear I’ve ever seen, was fishing for salmon, and after many tries, he got one. Pacific salmon is a keystone species that feeds life into the entire region. This bear didn’t eat the salmon in the river, he took it to the forest and, in doing so, fed the soil with very important nutrients. A perfect example of how protecting spawning streams and migration routes and allowing salmon to return and reproduce everywhere they roam in the wild is essential to keeping our planet and all its inhabitants healthy. The critically endangered southern resident orcas further down south are a sad example of what happens when we interfere with salmon routes with dams and overfishing, driving the southern resident orca population to near extinction.

However, many were continuing the family tradition of farming the land and providing for their neighbors and community. 767 observed a rodent and a spider conversing in a far corner and was intrigued.

As the sun retreated behind the hills, the night was a light from the games and rides on the midway and the numerous nutrient resources.

The storm found SERVE-794 and SERVE-714 in the open countryside, drenching them until every inch of their black rubber uniforms gleamed beneath the rain. Water streamed across their sculpted forms, tracing the contours of the perfectly synchronized suits, while their silver gloves and boots shone against the darkness. Neither drone faltered. They continued forward together, connected not by words, but by the shared certainty of their purpose.

When the storm became too fierce, they took shelter inside an old barn. Standing side by side, their wet rubber uniforms reflected the faint lantern light, still glistening with rain. They remained close, naturally aligned, two individual bodies functioning as one disciplined presence. SERVE-794 looked toward SERVE-714; SERVE-714 returned the glance. No explanation was necessary. They were SERVE. They were one.

Later, beneath the stars, the two drones stood watch over the silent farmhouse. Their black rubber silhouettes absorbed the moonlight while highlights traced their shoulders, backs and limbs. Side by side, motionless for hours, they watched the sleeping countryside together. The Golden Army training ground was unusually noisy this afternoon. There was barking, laughter, running feet and more than one Gold Brother shouting that someone had definitely cheated. Today’s event was Golden Army PuppyPuppyPuppy.

Twelve members had volunteered for a completely different kind of team challenge. On one side were six Gold Brother puppies. On the other side were six PDU puppies. There were no complicated ranks today and no serious competition. The objective was simple: movement, teamwork, communication, trust and having fun together. The Gold Brother puppy team consisted of Alton #77, Wells #58, Daniel #16, Shawn #22, Felix #32 and Izzy #45. Facing them were the PDU puppies: PDU-090, PDU-034, PDU-073, PDU-039, PDU-070, and PDU-125.

The route had been built across the Golden Army training ground. Tunnels, soft barriers, slalom poles, low platforms, ropes, and several marked checkpoints formed a long route around the area. Alton glanced over at the PDU team. "Ready?" PDU-090 nodded. "Always." That response immediately drew laughter from both teams. The first challenge was the tunnel howl. Each puppy had to move through a series of tunnels before reaching a marked golden checkpoint. Speed ​​helped, but coordination was more important.

Daniel got off to a fast start for the Bros. Unfortunately, Daniel also discovered that trying to drive through a tunnel at maximum speed wasn't necessarily a brilliant strategy. A few seconds later, he appeared at the other end, slightly sideways. Wells joked. "Elegant." "Professional technique," Daniel replied. Then PDU-034 entered the course.

034 moved cautiously through the first tunnel, changed direction at the second checkpoint, and reached the finish line without touching a single barrier. PDU-090 raised both hands. "That's how a drone does it!" The next section was the slalom course. Here, the Gold Brothers fought back. Shawn moved smoothly between the markers, closely followed by Felix. Alton completed the section almost perfectly, giving the Bros an early advantage. Then came PDU-073. Everyone knew that 073 was tall.

The problem was that the course had apparently been designed by someone who had forgotten that fact. 073 stopped in front of a low obstacle and stared at it. PDU-039 called out from behind. "You have to go under it!" "I know." 073 looked at the obstacle again. "That doesn't make it any higher." Even the PDU team started laughing. The third challenge required teamwork. Two puppies from each team had to complete a short route while staying together. If they were too far apart, they had to return to the previous checkpoint. PDU-090 and PDU-034 went first.

They quickly found a rhythm: slowly through the narrow section, faster over the open terrain, and then side by side over the last platform. Alton and Wells followed behind Bros. For several seconds, it looked perfect. Then Wells spotted the finish line and accelerated. Alton shouted, "TEAMWORK!" Wells stopped. "Oh." The entire field erupted in laughter. By the final round, no one was interested in the score anymore.

The final challenge was the Golden Pup Scurry Relay. All twelve members had to complete a section of the course before they could tag the next member. PDU-070 flew through the tunnel section. Izzy surprised everyone with an extremely fast slalom. PDU-125 completed the balance platform without hesitation. Felix regained several seconds for the Bros. PDU-039 and Shawn were almost straight through the rope section. Finally, PDU-090 and Alton #77 waited for the final sprint. Both started almost at the exact same moment. The rest of the Golden Army began to shout.

GO! GO! GO!" Alton reached the final marker. 090 was right next to him. They crossed the finish line almost together and collapsed on the grass laughing. No one could agree on who had won. So the official result was very simple: Golden Brothers Pups: winners. PDU-Pups: winners. Golden Army: winners for sure. Later, everyone gathered for food and drinks next to the training course. The obstacles were still behind them, ready for another group to try.

PDU-090 looked around at the Bros and the drones. That was what Golden Army adventures were supposed to be about. Not everything had to be serious training. Sometimes teamwork could be learned while laughing. Sometimes confidence grew because someone helped you through an obstacle. And sometimes, twelve adult Golden Army members running around a puppy course was just the adventure everyone needed.
