“You okay?” he looked over to the young red head.

emma turned and nodded. “yeah...just a new place.”

David blinked a few times, unsure if he should believe what he was seeing. “Emma… is that really you?” 

emma turned around and a smile lit up her features for the first time in awhile. “david?!” she asked happily before running towards him. “david you’re here!”

“of course we will, diana. wait, em, rewind please? did you say boyfriend?”

“boy-boy friend? since when?” diana asked flabbergasted.

“that’s what it’s called right? where he holds only my hand and i hold only his hand and we’re each other’s? his name is david and he’s really nice and i like him,” she answered with a smile. “so could he come too?”

“yeah, em. she’s basically asking us to be in the wedding.” rose replied with a wide grin.

“Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you guys something.”

emma looked up at her. “what is it?”

“Well… no,” the male laughed a bit. “But, that’s one of the nice things about Christmas. Giving and getting gifts from family and friends. Spending time with them? You know, just showing them how much you care… it’s just nice,” he shrugged. Laughing along with her, he questioned, “are Kit Kat’s your favorite, too?” 

“Oh, I–!” David paused, awkwardly shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah, not really. He’s just… not. I don’t really now all the science behind it, but he’s just… not,” he did his best to explain. “That’s the annoying part about candy. If I could have it every meal, I swear I would. I love Kit Kats more than myself some days.” 

“You don’t have to. Santa was made up by… I don’t know. All’s I do know is that he’s made up,” he shrugged. “Candy is amazing. If I could eat candy all day, every day, I would. I actually did once, but… I got sick.”

“so santa isn’t real?” she asked with wide eyes. she thought for a second that she might get a christmas present. her foster father probably wouldn’t give her one. and she knew her father wouldn’t. “i like candy. so if you eat too much it makes you sick.”

“i mean, it depends on the person. it’s just supposed to wake you up, but it can make you really sort of– hyper. your father needs it to exist in the morning.” mary said with a chuckle as she linked her arm with emmas so they could walk to the coffee shop together. “you can just take a look at the menu, pick whatever you want. my treat.”

“oh. i’m not sure that i’ve ever been hyper really. he does?” she replied, tucking the information about her father away. she happily walked with the blonde woman, leaning her head against her arm. “that’s very nice of you. thank you.”

“Santa, yeah! But that’s all the way in December. December 25th, to be exact. That’s so far away. I don’t get why people are pushing it now. I still have Halloween candy left to eat.” 

“santa. right. oh. well then i don’t understand either. but i guess that’s not surprising. candy? i like candy.”

“So, I’ve been hearing a lot of people saying that it’s Christmas now… but it’s only November? What do they mean by that? It’s not even Thanksgiving–I’m just really confused.” 

“christmas is the one with the big red man who comes into houses, right?”

“maybe we’ll start with something with not so much caffeine in. just in case.” mary responded with a laugh. she wanted to bring her gun with her, just in case, but to save from spooking emma again, she left it on the side as she went to the door and opened it, waiting for emma to follow.

emma nodded. “is caffeine bad?” she asked curiously. emma was glad to spend time with the older woman. she’d never really had a mom before. she happily followed the woman out.

“okay, that’s fine. i’d love to catch up. why don’t we go over the road and get some coffee, huh?” she asked emma, giving her a soft smile. she wanted to get to know all of her grandchildren better, so she’d jump at the chance to spend some time with them.

emma gave her a hesitant smile. “yeah?” she asked hopefully. she wanted to get to know her family. her whole family. “okay. i don’t think i’ve ever had coffee before,” she admitted but nodded.

“it’s okay. it’s okay, it’s my fault.” mary said, placing her hands on emmas arms and rubbing them softly to help her calm down. maybe mary shouldn’t go in all guns blazing, literally, all the time. “what are you here for, sweetie?”

emma looked up when she felt mary’s hands rubbing her arms softly. it was such a comfort thing. she wasn’t used to it. but it was nice. it seemed like something a.....mother would do. she nodded. “i just...i wanted to see you.”

“emma..” mary said, the look in her eyes turning to concern as she placed the gun down on the side and walked over to her granddaughter. “i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to frighten you.”

emma swallowed thickly, her eyes following the gun as mary put it down. she took a deep breath trying to calm her furiously beating heart. “i...i didn’t mean to sneak up on you. sorry,” she said, her voice strained as she looked down.
