To add some variety to this blog, I am going to share something I did for the Ukrainian publishing house āNeboā (nebo.booklab.publishing) last year.
Here are a few fragments of the illustrations for the third novel in the Brian Jacques' Redwall saga ā "Mattimeo". Of all the books in this series, I think "Mattimeo" was the most fun to illustrate so far.
I love Mossflower so much, but definitely I liked Legend of Luke, because the characters just got to be normal, y'know? Like old friends, family, and really fleshed a lot of characters out. (I also really liked The Bellmaker for this reason too.)
I really like how there are actually just GOOD RELATIONSHIPS between characters (not every relationship needs drama).
I also adore how Gonff is just like Best Dad Ever. He is so excited about his son just existing, and I imagined he was there helping 100% of the time (when not pulling mischief elsewhere).
Columbine tries to act all stern but you know she's also behind the corner laughing so hard at all of their antics.
Male warriors in Redwall: I am going to stab you with this ancient sword forged by the greatest badger smiths in the land
Female warriors in Redwall: I am going to beat you to death with this actual piece of trash I found on the beach and you are going to thank me for itĀ
And then they did give Triss the sword and she beat Kurda with the flat instead of actually using it like a sword.
Finally, the whole reason I started feverently drawing Redwall fanart. My precious lad, Blaggut, from The Bellmaker.
I had read this book originally so long ago (around the time it came out), so rereading it was like remembering an old friend. What I did NOT remember was how utterly wonderful Blaggut was.
This is probably one of my favorite illustrations I have done in a good while. Now that I have a better feel on how I want to draw my woodland characters, I absolutely 100% had to draw them camping on their travels in Mossflower.
Also, I really wanted to play with the firelight and try a more shaded "storybook" kind of feel.

I highly recommend y'all read Mossflower. While I like Redwall and it's sequels, lemme tell you, Mossflower is so full of SASS. They're constantly making remarks at each other (but not in like a derogatory way. In the way you make fun of your best friends.)

I AM THAT IS
Decided to dabble in other characters, so I definitely wanted to draw Mariel and Dandin (I did earlier but I wanted to redo their outfits). I just love how much of a gremlin Mariel can be š¤£
I remembered this meme exists and IMMEDIATELY had to draw it.
Thatās it, thatās Mariel of Redwall in a nutshell.
Time for more Incorrect Redwall Quotes!
Honestly, it felt like a discussion the two of them would have. 𤣠my best regards to @incorrectredwallquotes, I hope you donāt mind me occasionally drawing these!
(Thereās so many that I like itās hard to choose what to draw)

Since Redwall is in the public consciousness again, I thought I'd share some art! Ublaz Mad Eyes and Grath Longfletch from the book The Pearls of Lutra drawn about 9 years apart. I've actually started rereading the series recently and really want to draw more characters, likely leaning closer to how they appear in the books than my usual style.

Alright, because I need her design For Reasons, here's my initial draft of Rose. Looking at the map Noonvale is like heckin' north (further than even Luke's caves!), so I went more viking with her clothing. I also wanted to have callbacks to the colors I use in Martin's design. I'm gonna sleep on it, and see how I feel about it in the morning!
Sometimes I think about Felldoh.
He was the first character where I actually had to put the book down to process. He died with a smile on his face, a broken javelin in each paw, and surrounded by a score of corpses. He was my favourite character in Martin the Warrior, and to go out like that, so close to killing Badrang, felt like a knife in the stomach.
But then I remember how angry he was. How he went out, against the wishes of his friends, to settle this himself. How he didnāt want to leave Marshank until everyone was free. How he attacked Badrang once he was within grabbing range. How he took out a bunch of the soldiers Badrang set out to kill him if the tyrant started to lose. How he was still smiling after he was already gone.
Felldoh never would have been happy in the world his friends strove to achieve. He was far too blinded by anger and hatred. It was all he really knew. His death, surrounded by enemies, fighting on his own, was the only way he would have wanted to go out. He showed his weapons with the intention of using them. He forced Badrang to see what heād created. He died enacting the wrath he had contained for so long. If he had killed Badrang and his soldiers, even cleared out the whole fortress, he wouldnāt have been satisfied.
Martinās remark at the end of the book stuck with me for that very reason. There was too much suffering, pain, and hatred, that he decided it was best to never tell of what happened at Marshank. Felldoh was driven by pure fury. He loathed to think that Badrang was still breathing, no matter where he was. Martin knew that. He had seen it firsthand, and knew that pain like this was something no goodbeast should have to hear. It wasnāt denying what happened, it was for everyone who died. Badrang doesnāt deserve to be remembered. Thatās what Felldoh was working to achieve.
I think thatās what really made Martin the Warrior worth it. The depth of Brian Jacquesā characters, especially here, is what made me love the series so much. These arenāt the typical heroes you find in most other fantasy or adventure books. These are people in a world that really feels alive. Each book has its own unique charm, so many characters, conflicts, dynamics, and stories, all of which mix together beautifully. The food descriptions werenāt the only thing Jacques was good at.
Heās the reason I love to write. Heās the reason I love to read. Heās the reason Iām doing anything with my life at all. Every paragraph I write, every line I draw, every idea I have, it all comes back to these friendly little forest creatures and their red abbey walls. I usually donāt get emotional over media, but Brian Jacques completely changed that for me. Just with one character, my entire perspective on media as a whole changed, and I think thatās something I need to embrace a little more.
