oh oh oh i love talking about this (@iamf0rtis)
out-of-universe all the main red mafia characters have names that are red-related because it was the *red* mafia and the idea had come from all of us wearing red to an event.
velvet is named after red velvet, the fabric. and partially the cake. what, im a simple man. i sat there for a while trying to figure out a red-related name that didnt sound too weird and then i looked up a list and saw it and went "yeah that'll do". in lore it was just a name that nala liked and unor thought it was sweet enough to lower people's guards. basically the same if you think about it lol.
maroons obvious. i think maroon is the most obviously red related @softboymudkip understood the assignment. in lore they chose the name, kind of. its what people called them in the orphanage as a nickname because they would always be black and blue or, maroon, because they got beaten up so much. pembrooke is literally just a name that kip enjoyed and followed cadence, so she went with it
mad was. well. hard cause it was a robot. not entirely sure about how @tally-vi got the idea (my dms have an album with a similar name so maybe that) but the red connection is in their last name, valentine. cause like valentines day and whatever. in lore the M.M.A.D. stands for Magnetosphere Mishap Assistance Droid and Valentine is the last name of their creator, Elanor.
as to solana, well, I fucked up. originally his last name was spelt roisin, which is an Irish name meaning little rose so that was the connection. however, sometime in between part 1 and 2 my brain decided that it was spelled roison, not roisin, so past part 1 solanas just not had any red connection at all. which I literally just realised while trying to remember where solanas name came from and I am currently baffled (sorry the Irish). mona came from the title and solana I think was just pretty.
thorn was originally the thorn king, and was really related to roses and flowers (I wonder why) but that's where the red came from. alviar just appeared one day on the doc and I asked about it but no one had an answer, so I just went "eh fuck it that's the last name now"

Immediately after âThe Strikeâ
Maroon attempted to stay as quiet as Velvet was as they crawled through the vent, but that was nearly impossible. She eventually stopped and turned to look at them.
âWeâre right above the room, but thereâs a drop. Iâm gonna go down first, so wait for my signal.âÂ
âWait? But-âÂ
âSo I can catch you and make sure you donât make noise,â Velvet clarified. The younger teenâs mouth formed an âoâ before they nodded. Velvet disappeared over the edge. Maroon listened for the sound of her hitting the lower level, but it never came. They crawled to the edge and glanced over.Â
Thatâs when the explosion went off.Â
Maroon quickly closed their eyes as the vent below them gave out and a wave of heat hit their face. Their back hit something hard, knocking the wind out of them. Maroon quickly attempted to catch their breath, panic rising in their chest. Coughing came from the other side of the room followed by the chilling laugh of Unor Bolton.Â
âI would think you would be better at your job than that, fÄŤlia,â he muttered. The smoke and debris began to settle, revealing the man still sitting in his chair. He was turned to his left, away from Maroon. A cough echoed off the walls.Â
Velvet.Â
Maroon took a deep breath and struggled to their feet. Air slowly filled their lungs as they raised their hands. A mushroom grew off the chair, knocking Unor to the ground. They jumped over the table and kneeled at Velvetâs side. She had a large scrape on her forehead that bled onto her hand. She coughed again but summoned Kil-layye Moâore.Â
âMaroon, I didnât see you there!â The younger teen redirected their attention to Unor, who was on his feet again. Velvet threw their sword at him, which he knocked to the ground. Maroon surrounded him with mushrooms that stretched to the ceiling. The man looked between the two teenagers, Velvet grabbing her sword again.Â
âQuite aâŚrash plan you had, Velvet,â he began, âTo plan an attack on my home- our home! Iâd almost be impressed if you hadnât executed it so horribly.âÂ
âHow did you know?â Velvet demanded. Unor broke one of the mushrooms, but it quickly grew back.Â
âA magician never reveals his secrets,â he said with a wink. Velvet glared at him and raised their sword.Â
âThen weâre done here.â She charged forward, but Kil-layye Moâore hit empty air. Unor broke through two more mushrooms and backflipped out of the enclosure. His hands glowed a dark black before a handgun appeared in each. He fired a shot at each teen, which they both dodged. Maroon attempted to trap him again but he lunged towards Velvet instead.Â
Velvet sliced at his arm before jumping to the right. Unor stayed on the offensive and fired another shot at her. It grazed her left shoulder but Velvet quickly stabbed at him again. The metal embedded itself in his lower abdomen, forcing him to stagger back.Â
âFuck-â she muttered. Maroon grew a mushroom to knock one gun out of Unorâs hand, but it just disappeared in a black cloud. Unor raised the other one and fired a shot straight at Velvetâs chest. Maroon quickly kicked him to the ground, forcing several mushrooms to grow through his hands. He let out a shout but Maroon quickly turned to Velvet. The teen mustâve hit the wall and fallen down but was now getting back to her feet. Unor stared at her as she summoned Kil-layye Moâore and walked towards him.
âCrazy what armour will do,â they said through gritted teeth. Unor frowned.
âArmour? I didnât know you turned into a coward, Velvet.â The assassin kicked him in the stomach, causing the man to let out a grunt. They followed it up by stabbing him in the stomach with their sword. Unor flinched for a moment before coughing.Â
âSo thatâs your big plan? Kill me?â
âI feel like that was obvious,â Maroon mumbled. Velvet pulled her sword out and sheathed it. Maroonâs eyes widened.
âVelvet-â
âIâm not letting him go, donât worry. Just give me a second.â They reached towards their utility belt but Unorâs foot hit Maroon directly in the head. They fell to the ground but Velvet caught them before their head got hit again. She set them down gently before digging her heel into Unorâs open wound. The man attempted to kick at them but they pushed his feet away.Â
Maroonâs head pounded as they sat up.
âMaroon, you okay?â Velvet asked, taking their gun out of its holster.Â
âF-fine.â Unor locked eyes with Maroon, sending a chill down their spine.Â
âAre you sure about that?â He asked. His voice was darker, the words seemingly twisting themselves around Maroonâs mind. He continued speaking, but Maroon couldnât tell what the words were. Their breath became shallower and their heartbeat sped up.Â
AttackÂ
Mushrooms exploded around the room, sending Velvet down to the floor again. Unor laughed.Â
Whatâs happening? What am I-Â
Maroon looked around for Velvet. She was getting back to her feet again, this time with mushrooms clinging to her mission uniform.Â
âMaroon!â They shouted, âSnap out of it!âÂ
âVelvet, I got the camera working again. Whatâs happening-â Maroon reached up and ripped their comms out of their ear. They threw it on the ground and staggered forward, hands still raised. Velvet moved in front of them. Maroonâs vision blurred but they felt her grab their hand. The mushrooms began spreading but Velvet kept a firm grip.Â
âMaroon, listen to me-â
âThereâs no point, dÄvĹtiĹ,â Unor shouted, âThey canât hear you!â Velvet glared at him.Â
âWhat did you do to them?â
âJust a little magic,â he said with a smirk. Velvet turned back to Maroon.Â
âMaroon, I need you to take a breath and calm down. Stick to the plan-â
âKnock her out, Maroon!â Unor called out. Velvet tensed up but didnât let go of them.Â
WhatâŚVelvet-
âMaroonâŚâ they mumbled. The younger teen took a deep breath, causing the mushrooms to recede from Velvetâs hand. Several more surrounded Unor and pinned him to the floor. He attempted to squirm out of them with little success.Â
âMaroon, free me this instant!â He demanded. Their vision slightly cleared as they carefully shook their head. Velvet kept a tight grip on their hand as she raised her gun.
âYou wouldnât dare,â he taunted. Velvet narrowed her eyes.Â
âTry me.â
âYouâll die. If you kill me, half your soul will die. The other half will follow and youâll cease to exist.â Maroonâs eyes widened.
âThatâsâŚno-â the younger teen tried, but the fuzziness in their head stopped them. Unor smirked.
âIt is. If you kill me, Velvet will die.â
âI donât care.â Maroonâs vision blurred again as they turned to look at their friend.Â
What? Velvet walked forward, finally letting go of Maroonâs hand. She pressed the gun to Unorâs head.
âDid you not hear me?â he breathed. Velvet glared at him.Â
âIf youâre dead, I donât care if Iâm alive. What matters is stopping you.â
Velvet took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger. Maroon watched the bright red liquid pour out of Unorâs head before their vision blurred to the point they could barely see. They could hear Velvetâs quiet breathing and footsteps as they walked back over to them. She took their hand again.
âWe did it,â she muttered, âHeâs dead.â Maroon took a deep breath and let out a small laugh.Â
âWe did, didnât we?â Velvet immediately tensed up next to them, causing Maroon to turn to their left. They could barely make out their bright red hair and familiar brown eyes.
âWhat the fuck is that?â they breathed. Maroon frowned.
âWhat-â Before they could finish their sentence, a gust of wind hit their face and their vision went black.Â
Solana blocked a guardâs attack with the pole of his spear before stabbing him in the chest. A vine wrapped around the guard and threw him out of the already-broken window. Solana attempted to catch her breath as she glanced at Thorn, who was also panting.
âI think,â it breathed, âThatâs all of them.âÂ
âDonât-â The wall to their right shattered, allowing another squad of B.A.D. agents to come running in. They shouted and pointed at the two mafia members.
âJinx us,â Solana finished. The elf raised her spear.Â
âHow does he have so many guards?â Thorn groaned.Â
âMoney.â
âI wish Zaeor paid us. Maybe then I wouldnât hate him as much as I do.â Solana raised an eyebrow and blocked a gunshot from one of the guards.Â
âNot a Zaeor fan, huh?âÂ
âIs anyone?â Thorn jumped forward and wrapped several guards in vines before sending them out the window. Solana charged as well, spear slicing through a few arms.
âVelvet is.â
âVelvet doesnât count.â
âAnd I donât really mind him, you know?â Solana stated, âHeâs a bit, I donât know, odd? But heâs got good intentions.âÂ
âI guess.â Their conversation was cut short by a guard, who ran forward and managed to stab Thorn in the shoulder. The teen yelled out in pain and Solana quickly jumped to aer aid. They pushed him to the ground and quickly slit their throat.
âThorn, you good?â
âFine-â
âVelvet, I got the camera working again. Whatâs happening-â Madâs voice cut out right as Solana felt a sharp pain erupt in her left side. Metal clattered to the ground behind her.
âFuck-â A teen, no older than Thorn, approached. He had light brown hair and sea-blue eyes. Unlike the other guards, the only armour he seemed to be wearing was a bulletproof vest. He held several throwing knives in his two hands. Thorn quickly grew a vine wall in front of them and steadied Solana.
âDonât let them get close to Mr. Bolton!â Someone, presumably the teen, shouted.Â
âSolana, you okay?â Thorn mumbled.Â
âMaroonâs powers- Unor did something to them,â Velvetâs voice came through the comms. One of the guards groaned as Thorn tensed up next to them.
âCommander, it is not safe for you-â Thorn reached up to their comms.
âDo you need me-â Another knife sliced through the wall and the side of Thornâs cheek.Â
âYou may give me orders when you can deal with a teen and an elf, captain.âÂ
âShit-â Solana mumbled, glancing at their teammate, âOkay, Thorn, you take out that kid. Iâll keep the others off your ass.âÂ
âGot it.â He jumped around the corner of the wall and attempted to trap him. Solana went around the other side, pulling out their pistol. She fired shots at the remaining guards, drawing their attention.
âVelvet-â Mad paused.Â
âWhatâs going on, Mad?â Solana asked, hitting a guard right in the nose. They glanced at Thorn. It narrowly avoided an airborne knife from the other teen.
âThe cameraâs out and Maroonâs unconscious. Velvet, are you there?â Thornâs eyes widened and ae turned to Solana. The commander swung a punch at Thorn, knocking him to the ground.Â
âShit-â she muttered. Solana fired a shot at the teen but they dodged it. Thorn jumped back to its feet and kicked them in the stomach.Â
âSolana, Thorn, can you clear me a path to the vent? Iâm going in.â Solana turned back to the guards and continued firing.Â
âWe can try,â the elf mumbled, âThorn, can you get that kid outta here?â
âIâm fucking working on it,â Thorn hissed back. A shot hit Solanaâs left elbow, knocking the pistol from his hands. Another shot hit her in the stomach and bounced off her vest. Solana frantically picked up the gun before jumping behind the wall.Â
âFucking hell-â Bullets ricocheted off of the plants in front of them. Thorn fell to the ground to his right and the teen immediately jumped on him. They held the knife to aer throat as Solana lined up her shot. A laser hit the commanderâs back, sending them flying over Thornâs head. Thorn stayed on the ground for a few seconds before scrambling to their feet.Â
âMad!â they shouted. The bullets stopped hitting the wall but the sound continued. The other teen crawled towards Thorn and grabbed his ankle right as Mad made it past the vine wall. The droid continued towards the vent. Thorn attempted to kick his legs free but eventually grew vines that attached themselves to the commanderâs legs. The vines pulled them to the window. The teen went flying but took Thorn with him.Â
âThorn!â Solana shouted. Mad turned around just in time to see the two teens disappear below the second-story window.Â
âFuck,â the droid muttered, âSolana, take care of the rest of the guards and then go after them.â Solana popped around the corner of the wall and unloaded another magazine at the guards. Another shot embedded itself in Solanaâs right arm. The elfâs wounds screamed in pain as she hid behind the wall again. Blood dripped down from his arms, hitting the white marble floor.Â
âMad, I canât-â they turned to the vent, but Mad was already gone. They took a deep breath.
Youâve got this, Mona. Just donât think about the pain and- She peeked around the corner but something hit her in the back of the head. He stumbled to the ground, vision blurring. Solana fumbled with the pistol. Several guards surrounded her, one kicking her gun away. Another lifted their foot and slammed it into her skull, forcing her unconscious.Â
âWhat the fuck is that?â Velvet breathed. She stared at Unorâs corpse, or more specifically, the glowing yellow light enveloping it.Â
âWhat-â Maroon began to her right. The younger teen suddenly fell, hitting Velvetâs shoulder. Velvet caught them and lowered them to the ground. She kneeled next to them, glancing down to see Maroonâs unconscious face before focusing on the light once again. They moved their head to their lap, keeping their sword firmly in their left hand. She could feel her teammateâs soft breathing, their chest slowly rising and falling.Â
The light grew brighter and split into five parts. Each morphed into different shapes, different people. They were vastly different in age and looks as the light solidified. In the centre was a tall woman, about 25 with long blonde hair and purple eyes. Her pink blouse was torn with a knife sticking out of her chest. She looked at Velvet with sympathy in her eyes.
The one to her left was a man, probably around Unorâs age. His blue eyes refused to meet Velvetâs. Blood dripped from his head, staining his blue hair a dark purple. He wore a B.A.D. agent uniform with three stars lined up on the sleeve.
The next one, all the way to the left, was a teen. He seemed to be older than Velvet but had pitch-black hair and bright green eyes. He had a set of Roman armour on and a large shield strapped to his left arm. A large red cut stretched along his neck.
Velvet could barely make out the other two people. One was much smaller and hid behind the woman in the centre. All the teen could see was chocolate brown eyes staring at her. The other one, a 25-or-so year old man, was facing away from them. Familiar black hair sat on his head.
âVelvet Bolton,â the woman breathed, âHello, child.â Velvet stared at her as the ethereal glow steadied.Â
âWho are you?â Velvet tried to sound intimidating, but her voice faltered. The woman walked forward, the kid staying right behind her. She stopped about a metre away and smiled warmly.Â
âYou wouldnât remember me. My name is Jacqueline King.â Velvet frowned.
King?Â
âYou would be more familiar with my husband, Mark. I believe you worked together when you were younger?â Velvet carefully nodded.
âIâŚknew Mark. ButâŚarenât you dead?âÂ
âI am. I- we,â she gestured to the man and teen, âare the people your father killed to steal their souls.â A chill went down Velvetâs spine.Â
âW-what?â
âDonât worry, weâre not here to harm you,â she clarified, âYour fatherâs actions are not your fault.â Velvet glanced back at Unorâs lifeless body.Â
âSoâŚthat was his actual body?â the assassin asked. Jacqueline nodded.Â
âYour mission is over, child. You did it.â Velvetâs muscles relaxed involuntarily. The womanâs voice seeped into her body, calming her despite the possible danger surrounding her.
âWe have something of yours.â Velvet looked up at her as she moved to the side. She gestured for the child behind her to walk.Â
âGo on, sweet one.â The girl, about 14 years old, stepped into view. A large patch of blood pooled near her abdomen, shining through her white dress. Her long black hair, chocolate brown eyes, gold moon necklace-
Me. Velvetâs eyes widened, Thatâs me. The girl stood in front of her.
âH-hello,â she mumbled. Velvet looked between her and Jacqueline.
â...Hi.âÂ
âI take it you know who she is, Velvet dear?â Jacqueline asked. Velvet stared at the girl in front of her.Â
âIs this real?â she muttered. The older man stepped forward next to Jacqueline.
âAs real as something involving magical souls can be,â he stated.
âRobertâŚâ
âWhat? Forgive me if Iâm a bit sceptical.â
âI donât know how you could still be scepticalâŚâ the armoured teen stated, crossing his arms.Â
âThatâs enough, you two-â
âCan we just finish this up?â the man facing away shouted. Robert turned to glare at the back of his head.
âI donât know why youâre in such a hurry to go to hell, asshole.âÂ
âIâm in a hurry to get the hell away from you asinÄŤ,â he shot back. Jacqueline sighed and turned towards him.
âDo you have anything you want to say to your daughter, Unor? An apology, perhaps?â The 25-year-old finally turned around and met Velvetâs eyes. Pitch-black irises stared her down, sending a chill down her spine.Â
âWhat do I have to apologise for?â
âYour actions led to what she went through.â
âTrust me, I donât need a fucking apology from him,â Velvet hissed. The black-haired girl took a step away from them.Â
âSheâs scary,â she mumbled, âI donât want to be scary.â Jacqueline put an arm around her.
âI know she may seem scary, but sheâs not. Sheâs scared, like you. Do you see that kid lying in her lap?âÂ
âThe one taking a nap?â
âMhm. Sheâs worried about them. She thinks we might do something to hurt them. You two are not as different as you think, child. You are two halves of one whole, with different strengths, weaknesses, ideals, and morals. Now, youâre going to become one again.â Velvetâs eyes widened once again.
âWhat?â Jacqueline turned to them and laughed.Â
âDid you think we were just going to keep the other half of your soul?â
âI-â the assassin paused, âI didnât think it was possible.â The armoured teen, Ethan, raised an eyebrow.
âWho told you that?âÂ
âWell-â Jacquelineâs form flickered, the light dimming.
âIâm afraid we donât have the time to discuss,â she said, pushing the younger Velvet forward, âGo on, little one.â She looked at Jacqueline with a fearful look in her eyes. The woman gave her one final squeeze.
âDonât worry, my sweet dove. We will meet again. Maybe not in this life, nor the next. It may be thousands or millions of lifetimes from now, but it will happen. And when it does, I will embrace you for as long as I have waited.â A tear fell from the black-haired girlâs face as she nodded. She turned back to Velvet and held out a hand. Velvet stared at it.Â
âGo on, child,â Jacqueline said to them, âYou will be safe.â Velvet lifted her right hand, readjusting Maroon as well. The golden figures slowly dimmed, dust-like particles flaking off.Â
âTake care of yourself, Velvet,â Jacqueline said, smiling sadly, âYou are more important than you could possibly know.â Velvet grabbed the younger girlâs hand. With that, the whole world went black.Â
Thorn was falling.Â
The wind whooshed past his ears as he tried to kick free of the other teenâs grip. The duo hit the ground hard. Thorn gasped for air but the commander jumped on top of them again. Angry blue eyes stared down at him as cold metal pressed against his throat. Thorn took a deep breath.
âListen, man, I donât think you want to do this.â
âShut up.â Thorn grew several vines that each tried to pry him off to no avail. The blade nicked Thornâs skin but the commander moved it. The two locked eyes before the other teen threw his blade on the ground.
âYou know what? Iâm done.â He stood up, leaving a slightly confused Thorn on the ground.
âWhat?â
âIâm not helping Unor kill a kid my age. I canât do this anymore.â The prince quickly hopped to aer feet.Â
âUh- well- Iâm glad you had a change of heart?â The commander turned around and began walking towards the gate. Thorn glanced between him and the window two stories up. They heard Solana say Madâs name before her voice suddenly stopped.Â
Iâve got to get back up there. Thorn raised a hand but was hit in the stomach with a bullet. They fell to the ground and the sound of the shot seemed to catch the commanderâs attention because he turned around. Thornâs abdomen burned with pain that the 16-year-old had never felt before. It bit its tongue to keep from screaming.
âIf I didnât know better, Iâd think you were deserting, commander.â Thorn tried to move to see the voiceâs source, but aer body screamed in pain. They watched the commander draw a pistol from the holster on his belt.Â
âWatch your words, lieutenant.â Another shot rang out and the commander staggered back a bit as it hit him in the chest. Another hit his hand and knocked the gun to the ground. Thorn bit his tongue again and raised his left hand. A vine wall sprouted in front of the commander, who after realising, mouthed âthank youâ.Â
âWhat the fuck,â the voice breathed. A manâs face appeared in Thornâs view. He scowled and raised a gun.
âThis bitch is still conscious.â Faint sirens hit Thornâs ears, and the man looked away.Â
âSir, I see UPS ships entering the atmosphere.â
âIf theyâre not supposed to be here, the guns will shoot âem down,â the man growled, turning back to Thorn, âNight night, little bitch.â A final shot rang out, hitting Thorn in the stomach. Their eyelids forcibly closed from the pain, and they quickly fell asleep.Â
Mad scanned the scene in front of it, screen blank. Mushrooms took over the entire area and outlined the chair from earlier. Maroon and Velvet were unconscious on the far left of the room while Unorâs corpse was a few metres to the right, mushrooms already beginning to decompose it. Mad ran towards the two teens, joining them on the floor.
âMad.â The droid looked up to see Zaeor standing over Unor. He was dressed in his pitch-black robe, sigils floating around him. Shadows pooled at his feet, forming a lake of darkness. Mad stared at him.
âZaeor?â they asked, âWhat-â The god walked forward, almost glaring at it.
âYouâre not supposed to be here.â
âI saw Maroon and Velvet go down. I came to help.â
âVelvetâs already dead. I made sure of it.â
âWhatâŚdo you mean you âmade sure of itâ?â Mad placed their hands on each of the teenâs necks. It was faint, but both still had a heartbeat.Â
Shadows quickly pushed Mad, slamming it into the wall. Their screen cracked when they fell to the ground.Â
âYou fucking nosy droid,â he growled, âDo you know how many times I had to change my plans because of you? I have been so close to getting Velvet killed hundreds of times, but you kept getting in my fucking way.â Shadows lifted the robot up and pinned it against the wall. Madâs mind raced as he stood in front of him. He glared, his face close to their TV.Â
âI knew it,â Mad muttered, âYou never gave a shit about us.â
âYou? No. You proved to be the worst decision I made in my plan.â Mad attempted to struggle out of the shadowy restraints to no avail.
âWhat plan? Killing us all?â Zaeor laughed darkly, sending a shiver in Madâs soul.Â
âNot all. Velvet was the priority, Solanaâs a nice bonus.â
âYouâre not hurting Solana-â
âI donât need to. You already did that, leaving him alone with the guards.â Madâs soul dropped.Â
No- Zaeor raised a fist and swung, hitting the left side of Madâs TV. It recoiled as a âcritical damageâ notification popped up. The restraints disappeared for a second, causing the droid to slam into the floor. They reformed and pinned it to the ground.
âReturning the favour,â the god mumbled. Zaeor leaned over and tilted Madâs TV so the camera was looking at his twisted smile.Â
âAnd now, with Velvet and you out of the way, my plan can truly begin.â Mad broke out of his grasp, causing him to laugh again.
âOh what a glorious sight it will be. Such a shame you wonât be able to see it,â he mumbled, âMe, ruling the multiverse with the most powerful weapon by my side.â Mad looked back at him.
âWeapon?â
âMaroon, of course. Iâd never let such a talent go to waste. Theyâll make a perfect leader for my new army,â he laughed, âHell, I donât even have to cast my own mind control magic! Unor did it all for me.â Mad glanced at the younger teen, still passed out in Velvetâs lap.Â
Velvetâs still alive and he doesnât know that. I canât let him take either of them.Â
âSure, it will take time,â Zaeor continued, âBut Iâve waited 500 years, what's a few decades more? Soon, all gods in the multiverse will bow to me and I will have the power I fucking deserve.â
âYou donât deserve-â Zaeor punched it again, shattering what remained of its screen and disabling the camera. Mad sat in darkness as the god chuckled.Â
âThis is very therapeutic, you know? You canât imagine how much I wanted to do this to you over the past year.â
âYouâreâŚyouâre not going to get away with this,â Mad mumbled, âThorn-â
âIs dead. That is also partially your fault.â
âShut up.âÂ
âWhat, Mad? Canât take responsibility for your own actions?â Mad could feel their systems shutting down, no doubt due to the damage.Â
âItâs notâŚmyâŚfault.â Zaeor let out one last loud laugh.
âI didnât realise a robot could be so delusional.â Mad heard his footsteps as he backed up.Â
âNow, if youâll excuse me, Iâve got a mansion to blow up,â he called out, âEnjoy shutting down, knowing that all of your friends' deaths are entirely your fault.â A swoosh went through the room, leaving Mad alone with their malfunctioning camera. The shadows pinning them down dissolved. It jumped to its feet, despite the warnings not to. Mad walked forward but tripped over a mushroom on the floor.
They slammed hard onto the ground, their TV detaching from their body and shattering into a billion pieces on the floor.Â
A/N: Â ...hi chat. fortis here.Â
thats it. the books over. is there a sequel? maybe. whens it starting? who knows. youre assuming there is one.Â
But in all seriousness, thank you all so much for the support on this project. I'll try not to get super sentimental but this book has been one of the best parts of my life for the past 2 years we've been working on it. While I did most of the actual writing, this would not be possible without the other writers, so shout out to them. All of our links are available below so go follow them. And stay tuned: we've got more planned for our favourite traumatised redheads.Â
If you're reading this on Tumblr, congrats, hit the follow button and stay in the loop on what we're working on. I've got several oneshots, headcanons, and funny stories from the writers room I'm going to be sharing. If you're reading on Wattpad (which most of you are), go follow the Tumblr and get access to all of that stuff. You're gonna want to see it :)Â
I'm also going to be working on editing earlier stuff, mainly part 1, and fixing formatting on the Wattpad. But in general, the story of this book is over. And I'm pretty happy with it, as I hope you all are. Still have questions? Shoot us an ask on the main TRM Tumblr or my personal blog and I'll see what I can do. But that's it. Signing off for the last time,
The Red Mafia launches their offensive attack on the B.A.D. mansion with the mission of killing Unor. The plan runs smoothly until they find out something shocking: Unor knew they were coming.

A/N: It's time for The Red Mafia finale. Are you ready for it?
New story next Saturday, the 30th. The end of an era. Be there.
8 days after âThe Lostâ
December 7th, 2364.
That was the day two thousand soldiers were scheduled to storm the Mahogony Mansion to retrieve the Red Mafia. Two days before the planted documents said they were supposed to.Â
7:30am.
That was the time the 5 mafia members left the mansion, geared up from head to toe. Mad said goodbye to Rhyme, who they left behind to watch the mansion and Wyatt. They all loaded up onto the Umbrella, a tense feeling in the air. The ride was nearly silent as Velvet sat in the captainâs seat, running through the plan in her head for the twentieth time.Â
Entering through the East entrance, the group splits up. Maroon and I move towards my mom and evacuate her to her ship. Mad, Solana, and Thorn enter security to disable the alarm system and redirect the ships en route to the mansion. We meet them there once Mom is evacuated safely, hacking into the defence mechanism and rigging it to attack any B.A.D. ship landing nearby.Â
They looked back at their teammates. Solana was sharpening their spear for the third time and checking the gun and dagged stashed on their utility belt. Mad was on its phone, presumably texting Rhyme. Their laser gun was already attached to their back and a small knife sat in their jacket pocket. Maroon was leaning on Thorn, who was staring down at the gun in aer hands. The prince had been against carrying the weapon at first but eventually gave in. Maroon also had one, though it was in its holster currently. Velvet also had a gun on her hip, along with Kil-layye Moâore, her staff, and her dagger.
All of the B.A.D. ships should be heading to the new location, a random planet two galaxies over. Unor wouldnât bring his actual body on the mission, so it should still be at the house. Weâll use the access to the security cameras to locate where he is and move in on his location. Maroon and Thorn will restrain him while I-Â
Velvet looked at Maroon, who smiled back at her.
While I end this.Â
Mad will stay in the security office and monitor the positions of the other B.A.D. ships. Solana, and Thorn if needed, will stay behind at various points in the mission to take care of any guards remaining at the house. Once Unor is dead, weâll evacuate to the Umbrella and return to the mansion.Â
âAbout a minute till we get there,â Mad reported. Velvet took a deep breath and stood.Â
âAlright. Everyone, any last-minute questions?â The group was quiet, and Thorn shook his head. The Umbrella entered the atmosphere and quickly zoomed around the house, landing outside. Mad began opening the door and Velvet quickly stood, drawing Kil-layye Moâore. Voices shouted outside but Velvet quickly threw the sword, silencing them. Mad looked back at the team.Â
âSolana, Thorn, you ready?â The two unbuckled themselves and joined Mad at the front. Maroon let go of Thornâs hand and ran to catch up with Velvet, who was now out of the ship. The guards were already incapacitated on the ground when they approached the door. Velvet typed in a passcode and a light blinked green. The others joined them in front of it.Â
âMad, you guys are going to the right. Maroon, weâre going to the left. Once I get this door open, weâre sprinting. Clear?âÂ
âClear,â the droid replied. Velvet twisted the doorknob and shoved it open. She led the way to the left, Maroon right behind her. Their teammates ran in the opposite direction. They were silent as they ran but shouts echoed behind them. Maroon looked back.
âI think theyâre fighting-â
âTheyâll be fine,â Velvet stated, âStick to the plan.â Maroon took a deep breath and reached up to their comms.
âGuys, you okay?â Half a minute passed, Velvetâs heart racing.Â
âYeah, fine. Just ran into a lot of guards outside the security room,â Thorn replied, slightly out of breath. Velvet frowned.Â
âBut thereâs never that many guards there.âÂ
âMaybe he changed it since you left,â Solana said, âWeâre entering the room now. You guys?â Velvet began to slow as Nalaâs room came into view.
âWeâre about to enter too. Talk to you in a bit.â Velvet pushed the door open, surprised to find it unlocked. Nala sat at the computer in the corner, still in her pyjamas and sleeping cap on.Â
âMater!â Velvet called out. She turned around and a bright smile appeared on her face.
âVelvet!â She quickly stood and pulled them into a hug.Â
âBack already? Itâs only been a week since-â Velvet pulled away and looked her in the eyes.
âMom, weâre here to get you out of here.â Nala frowned and glanced at Maroon, who nodded.Â
âGet me out- what are you talking about?â Velvet grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards the door.Â
âIâll explain later, but weâve got to get you out of here.â Nala pulled her wrist out of their grip and stared at her child.
âVelvet, youâll explain before you try to pull me anywhere.â Velvet glared at her.
Why is she being so difficult all of a sudden?Â
âMs. Nala, weâre here to break you out of the house and get you somewhere safe,â Maroon started, stepping forward, âItâs not safe here right now. I promise you, we just want to keep you safe. We donât want you to get wrapped up in whatâs going on right now.â The CEO frowned and crossed her arms.
âAnd what is that?âÂ
âWeâre killing Unor,â Velvet said coldly, grabbing her wrist again. Nalaâs eyes widened but she didnât resist as Velvet pulled her out of the room and down the hall. Voices shouted down the hall and the assassin raised their sword. Several soldiers turned the corner.
âClose your eyes, mater,â Velvet ordered. The woman looked between her daughter and the guards before obeying. The leader, with the large B.A.D. logo on his chest, stared at Nala.
âTheyâre taking Mrs. Bolton!â he shouted, aiming his gun, âDonât let them get away!â
âMaroon?â Velvet asked. The younger teen nodded. The guardsâ bullets were blocked by a wall of large mushrooms. One grew right in front of her. She let go of Nalaâs wrist and jumped, sailing over the wall as she threw Kil-layye Moâore. It sliced through the leaderâs neck and embedded itself in the guardâs shoulder. He let out a loud scream that was cut off by a mushroom growing underneath him and launching him into a wall. His unconscious body crumpled to the ground.Â
Velvet summoned her sword back to their hand. The remaining two guards backed up but hit the wall of the hallway.
âNoâŚâ one of them breathed. Velvet smirked and threw the sword, slitting their throats. Maroon gently led Nala through the mushroom wall and handed her off to Velvet.
âWeâre almost out, Mom,â the teen muttered, retrieving Kil-layye Moâore.Â
âWhat changed?â Nala asked, âWhy now?â
âUnor was planning to attack our home. Weâre attacking first before he can.â Nala opened her eyes and looked down at Velvet.
âCan we talk about this later, Mom? So I can work on getting us out of here safely.â Nala looked away.
âO-okay. Weâll talk about it later.â Velvet took a deep breath and reached up to their comms.
âMad, alarm system update?âÂ
âDeactivating it now,â the droid responded, âYou should be good to exit now.âÂ
âOkay. Weâre taking Nala out now.â Nala frowned at Velvet but didnât say anything. The assassin led her out the door at the end of the hall and towards the parking garage in the back of the area.
âWhereâs your ship, Ms. Nala?â Maroon asked. The woman gestured upwards.Â
âOn the top floor.â Velvet groaned.
âOf course.âÂ
âItâs fine, Velvet. Iâll get us up there,â Maroon said. They grew a mushroom in front of the group and hopped on. Nalaâs eyes widened as Velvet led her onto it.
âWhatâŚâ she breathed. Maroon smiled nervously as they grew it to the top floor. Â
âMaroonâs powers,â Velvet clarified. Nala turned to them.
âItâsâŚ.beautiful.âÂ
âT-thank you, Ms. Nala.â They stepped off of the mushroom and Nala led the way to her pink ship.Â
âWhere am I supposed to go?â she asked. Velvet pulled out a small piece of paper and handed it to her.Â
âThese coordinates. Do you remember Rhyme Reuter?â The CEO closed her eyes for a moment.
âThat was one of Mrs. Gracyâs foster children, correct? The brown-haired one whose mom died in the mining accident?âÂ
âThatâs the one. Sheâs waiting there with a kid, Wyatt. Heâll help keep you safe there while we deal with things here.â
âBut where am I going?â Velvet took another deep breath.
Wyatt was fast asleep on the couch, so Rhyme turned off the Johnny Darlington episode the mafia had put on before they left. He sighed and walked into the kitchen.
I hate that Iâm not with them, she thought, opening the fridge and grabbing out one of Velvetâs energy drinks, I should be there in case anything happens to Mad. He popped open the tab and took a sip. The liquid was clear but tasted like raspberry and peach. The carbonation tickled her throat as it went down.Â
Hopefully Velvet wonât mind me drinking their shit. Rhyme walked back into the living room.
She wonât mind if they all die because Iâm not there. The thief paused and shook her head.Â
No, donât think like that. Theyâll be fine. Just focus on your job. As if on cue, Rhymeâs phone dinged. He pulled it out.
Message from Velvet. Looks like Nalaâs on her way. A loud engine sound enveloped the mansion, sending a chill down Rhymeâs spine.
âThat canât be her,â he mumbled. She quickly set the drink down and scooped Wyatt up in her arms. He stirred slightly but stayed asleep. Rhyme sprinted up to the second floor and opened Madâs door. After setting Wyatt down on the bed, Rhyme locked the door using the key Velvet had given him. He glanced out of the window.
A grey B.A.D. ship had landed outside, and several armed men streamed out. Rhyme cursed under her breath.Â
âLooks like Iâm up,â he muttered. He ran back downstairs and grabbed his backpack from the couch. She unzipped it slightly right as the door fell the the ground.
âSpread out and find them!â Someone shouted. Rhyme pulled out their gun and turned the corner. He fired at the guards, hitting a few in the chest. They recoiled slightly but the bullet didnât pierce the armor.
Shit, Rhyme thought. She grabbed the bag and dodged out the door, the men shouting behind her. A bullet whizzed right by his ear. Rhymeâs heartbeat raced as he pulled a bomb out of his bag. She glanced back.
Here goes nothing. She chucked the bomb behind her and it exploded on impact with the ground. Screams from the guards enveloped her ears. Behind her, the guards laid on the ground with various limbs missing and blood colouring the grass. He threw another at their ship, for good measure.Â
She walked back around the bleeding men, some shouting for help. Rhyme silenced a few of them before reaching one still standing near the doorway to the mansion.
âW-who are you?â He demanded, raising his rifle. Rhyme raised an eyebrow.
âYou donât recognize me?â She taunted, âWhy, Iâm offended.â He fired a shot but Rhyme stepped out of the way. He raised his pistol and shot him in the chest, sending him flying through the mansionâs doorway. He slid to the ground and hit his head on the stairs.Â
âShit-â he muttered, âShit shit shit-â He reached for the radio attached to his belt but Rhyme shot his hand.Â
âI donât think so.â Pain exploded in Rhymeâs left side and she quickly doubled over.Â
âWhat the fuck-â she muttered, looking down. His black and white shirt was torn and blood was now dripping out.Â
âNow, boss! Call for backup!â Someone shouted behind her. Rhyme quickly shot the downed man in front of her in the head before turning around and shooting the one holding a gun.Â
âNice try, asshole,â she muttered. The air was still as Rhyme looked at the various corpses on the front lawn. His side throbbed and he quickly pressed a hand against it.Â
âMadbay, right,â he breathed. Just then, another ship began descending onto the soil. Rhyme groaned.
âI donât know if I can take another fucking squad-â She turned around to see a light pink ship hit the dirt. The door slowly opened revealing, not another squadron as Rhyme had anticipated, but Mrs. Bolton.Â
âOh thank god,â he said. Nala rushed towards her.
âRhyme! Itâs lovely to see you dear. After you went missing-â The CEO stopped in front of her and glanced around. Her eyes widened at the men lying on the ground. Rhyme reached a hand out.
âMrs. Bolton, I promise you this is not what it looks like-â She looked up at Rhyme and quickly locked onto his bleeding abdomen.
âOh my-â she breathed, âDid you get shot?â Rhyme glanced down at the wound.Â
âOh, that? Thatâs nothing I havenât dealt with before-â Nala took her hand and walked towards the door.
âIs there a medical area in the house? Youâll need stitches, not to mention getting the bullet out.â Rhyme broke her hand free, causing Nala to turn around to look at her.Â
âYeah, there is. Go inside and to the left. Itâs labelled âMadbayâ.â
âWell, come on then.â Rhyme waved her on.
âIâll be there in a minute. Iâve got to do something out here first.â Nala frowned and crossed her arms.
âRhyme, I have no doubt whatever you need to do can wait until after you receive medical attention.â Rhyme smiled at her.
âIâll be fine, Mrs. Bolton. Itâs not too deep. Go on ahead and you can find all the supplies. Iâll just be a minute.â Nala took a deep breath and sighed.Â
âAlright, but hurry.â
âI will.â The CEO walked into the Mahogany Mansion and took a left toward the Madbay. Rhyme waited a few seconds before walking inside and dragging the corpse of the squad leader outside. He collected all the bodies into a large pile and threw a bomb into the centre. She backed up and detonated it, causing various limbs to fly onto the surrounding land. Rhyme placed a few more bombs around the perimeter before entering the mansion once again.
Just in case, he thought, I wonât let Mad down.Â
Thorn watched Mad rapidly type commands into the computer. Their fast-moving fingers almost made his head spin. Solana was holding the door closed on the other side of the security office. No one was on the other side, but the elf wasnât planning on taking any chances.Â
âOkay, theyâre all redirected,â Mad mumbled, âHopefully they all listen to the new orders.â
âWe have Rhyme at the mansion for a reason,â Solana added. Mad nodded slightly.
âAlthough I hope he doesnât have to do anything.âÂ
âNalaâs on her way to the mansion now,â Maroonâs voice came through the comms, forcing Thorn to smile slightly.Â
âPerfect timing. I just got the new orders sent out to all the squadrons,â Mad replied. Thorn laughed slightly at the echo from the comms. Mad turned to look at them.
âYou okay, Thorn?â
âYeah, fine. Itâs just kinda funny hearing your voice through the comms and right next to me.â Mad chuckled.
âYouâre right.â
âAlways positive, Thorn,â Solana added. The prince shrugged.
âWell someoneâs gotta be the team clown. Otherwise Velvetâs going to make everything way too serious.âÂ
âTrue, true.âÂ
âWeâre approaching the security office now,â Velvet said, âMad, any luck locating Unor?âÂ
âOn it right now.âÂ
âRadio when you guys are close and Iâll open the door,â Solana said.
âGot it. Be there soon.â Mad typed a few more commands into the keyboard.
âNow where is UnorâŚâ it muttered. Thorn watched as the droid flipped through several camera feeds.Â
âWhat about his office?â Ae asked. Mad flipped to it, but no one was inside.
âDamn, I thought we were gonna have it easy,â Solana mumbled.Â
âGuys, come in,â Velvet whispered through comms. Thorn straightened up.Â
âWeâre listening, Velvet. Go for it,â Solana answered.Â
âMaroon and I are hiding behind some chairs outside the office. Youâve got a full squad about to be right outside the door. Stay quiet and weâll take care of them.âÂ
âCopy that.â Mad hit the mute button on the keyboard, shutting down all the sound from the monitors. Solana pushed harder against the door, and Thorn raised his hands. It was silent for a minute until screams echoed against the walls. A body must have hit the door because it shook violently and caused Solana to move back slightly. After a few seconds, the screams stopped.Â
âTheyâre taken care of, Solana. Let us in.â Velvet was slightly out of breath, and Thorn could barely make out Maroonâs heavy breathing as well. Solana opened the door and the two teens came in. Thorn caught a glimpse of the bloodied corpses outside before the elf shut the door again. Thorn shook their head and refocused on Maroon.
âYou okay, Mar-Mar?â it asked. Their friend looked relatively unharmed, just exhausted.Â
âIâm okay. You?â
âFine.â Velvet joined Mad at the control panel while Solana remained at the door.Â
âAny luck?â Mad shook their TV.
âIâve searched all the cameras several times. He must be somewhere without direct camera access.â Velvet frowned.
âBut thatâs impossible. Every inch of this place is attached to these cameras. UnlessâŚâ Velvetâs eyes widened and they lightly pushed Mad out of the way.
âUnless what?â Mad asked. Velvet didnât answer, instead opening up a new terminal and typing in another command. A green âAccess Grantedâ screen appeared before it cut to a new camera feed. Unor was sitting on a chair directly across from the camera. His eyes were closed, but he was tapping his foot. A vent sat right above him, blowing air that moved his hair slightly. There was nothing else in the room, just a concrete floor surrounded by deep red wallpaper.Â
He was dressed in the same suit he had been wearing when Thorn had first seen him. His black hair was slicked back, presumably with some kind of gel. He held a pistol in his right hand but held some kind of folder in his left. After a few seconds, he opened his eyes. Unor winked at the camera and then the feed went to static.Â
The Red Mafia was silent. Velvet put her face in her hands before looking back at the cut-off feed.Â
âHe knows weâre here,â they mumbled.
âBut how?â Solana questioned, âWe didnât tell anyone thatâs not here right now. Unless-â The elf glanced at Mad.Â
Rhyme.
âWeâre not pointing fingers,â Velvet snapped. The entire mafia turned to look at her as she continued.Â
âNow is not the time to question anyone. He knows, so what? Weâve gotten this far. Weâre not turning back now.â They turned back to the keyboard and pulled up the normal camera feed. They flipped to a camera that seemed to show a dead end in a hallway, except for a large vent near the floor. A few guards leaned against walls and Thorn saw the familiar stickered door from a week ago.Â
âThe room heâs in doesnât have any door or entrances thatâs not through that vent,â she began, âThe vent system is connected to this one, which is upstairs and to the right. The plan isnât changing: weâre still killing Unor.â Maroon reached out and grabbed Thornâs hand. The prince gave a reassuring squeeze before turning back to Velvet.Â
âMad, do your best to restore that camera feed. I doubt he did anything to the actual camera, just turned off its connection. I think youâll be able to reconnect to it.â Mad nodded and stepped up to the keyboard. Velvet moved out of its way.Â
âThe rest of us are heading upstairs. Solana, youâll keep the guards busy while Maroon, Thorn, and I get into the vent. From there, the plan continues as normal. Is everyone clear?â The Red Mafiaâs leader looked at each one of them and received a nod. Thorn gave Maroon one final squeeze before letting go of their hand.Â
âLetâs do this, Mar-Mar,â he muttered. Maroon smiled weakly.Â
âYeah.â Solana opened the door slightly and peeked out.
âWeâre clear.â Velvet moved next to her.Â
âAlright. Follow me. Thorn and Maroon, you already know where weâre going, so youâll cover our 6. Solana, youâre in the front with me.âÂ
âYou got it, drama queen.â Velvet chuckled slightly before throwing the door open.Â
âNow!â she whispered. They booked it to the right, where stairs quickly came into view. The group sprinted up them and Thorn grew several vines to block anyone following behind. Velvet continued to the right as shouts came from the left. Maroon blocked the hallway with a wall of mushrooms just as bullets began flying at them. The two magical teens switched off making new walls as they ran down the hallway.Â
Thorn spotted the camera above them and the guards on the walls. They pushed themselves up and raised their guns.Â
âHe was right! Capture them!â One of them shouted. Velvet threw Kil-layye Moâore, but the guard side-stepped out of the way. Solana took to a guard in front of him, dodging a shot and stabbing them in the stomach. The elf knocked the gun out of his hand before ripping his spear out.Â
Velvet rolled under several bullets before summoning her sword. They chopped off one of their heads right as a bullet grazed her left arm. Velvet didnât flinch and turned to the guard that had shot it. A mushroom sprouted from the guardâs mouth as he gasped for air. They fell to the ground, unconscious. Thorn looked back at Maroon, whose hands were raised at the guard.Â
âThorn, behind you!â Solana shouted at him. The teen quickly spun around to see several guards break through the vine wall. He raised his hands and vines attached themselves to their ankles. Several of them tripped while others continued on. Solana pushed the teen out of the way and sliced through the guardâs body armour. Thorn pinned them to the ground and reinstated the wall.Â
Metal clattered to the ground, causing them to turn around. Velvet had ripped the vent to the ground, Maroon standing over them. Thorn turned back to Solana, who had several guards surrounding her. The prince used a vine to push them back before drawing their gun.Â
I hope this works, he thought. Ae fired a shot at one of them that collided with one of their arms. That guard fell to the ground, giving Solana the chance to fight off the other two. Behind them, Velvet muttered something to Maroon. Thorn couldnât hear their response, instead focusing on fixing the wall once again. After a few seconds, Velvet shouted over the sound of the fight.
âThorn, stay here with Solana! The guards are going to keep coming, so heâll need you here!â Thorn paused and turned back to look at them.
âBut-â Maroon smiled at them.
âWeâll be fine! Solana needs you here.â Thornâs heartbeat raced. A thousand possibilities ran through aer head, most ending horribly. Their eyes were locked with Maroonâs.Â
âAre you sure?â He shouted back. Maroon nodded. Thorn glanced back at Solana, who was once again getting slightly overwhelmed by the guards. The prince took a deep breath.
âOkay! Stay safe!â
âWe will!âÂ
âAnd Velvet?â the prince added. The assassin turned to look at him.
âWhat?â
âMake sure Maroon comes back alive.â Velvet paused for a moment before nodding.Â
âPromise me.â
âIâll do my best.â
âPromise me, Velvet.â She glanced at Maroon before looking Thorn dead in the eyes.
âI promise.âÂ
âThank you.â Velvet disappeared into the darkness and Maroon kneeled down on the ground. They glanced back at Thorn before joining Velvet in the vent. Thorn stared at the empty air for several seconds.
âThorn, I could use some help here!â Solana shouted. Thorn quickly turned around and fired a few shots in the guardsâ general direction. Several of them turned their focus to them.Â
âWhoâs ready to dance?â Thorn asked, raising his hands. The guards responded by raising their guns. The prince smirked and glanced at Solana. The elf sliced through three or four guards before taking a breath. Thorn turned back to the approaching guards.Â
In a few seconds, they were hanging from vines attached to the ceiling while Thorn ran forward to help Solana.
The whole mafia expected Velvet to be upset following her mysterious conversation with Zaeor. What Maroon and Thorn didn't expect, though, was her running off to break into the B.A.D. mansion all on her own. The two scramble to follow them and the trio unite to search for answers within the walls of Velvet's childhood home.

A day after âThe Thiefâ
Maroon knocked on Velvetâs door for the third time, anxiety taking over them.Â
âVelvet, I know youâre upset at Zaeor, but can you just let me know youâre okay?â they pleaded, âNo oneâs seen you since dinner last night.â The older teen had been locked in their room since they had gotten back from the UPS headquarters, only emerging after Zaeor had left to grab food. The god had returned about half an hour ago and seemed completely unbothered by her lack of presence.Â
âTheyâre too frustrated to be useful right now,â he had told Maroon, âItâs one of their flaws.â Maroon had ascended the stairs anyway, and now stood in front of the closed, silent door.Â
âVelvet, I really donât want to do this. But I need to make sure youâre okay.â Maroon took a deep breath and grew a mushroom on the other side of the door. It fidgeted with the lock before a loud clicking sound echoed in the hallway. The teen opened the door, the mushroom melting back into the floorboards.Â
The window across the room was open, letting in a cold breeze that sent goosebumps down their arm. The red and black comforter of her bed was still tucked in as if it hadnât been touched in a few hours. Several empty energy drink cans sat on the bedside table. Maroon walked over to them, spotting a handwritten note set precariously on the edge. They picked it up.
Velvetâs handwriting, they thought, I canât tell what it says. Maroon returned back to the doorway.
âThorn, can you come up here?â they called out. Footsteps thudded against the stairs before the other teen appeared down the hallway. Their purple flannel matched Maroonâs sweater, which still made them smile slightly. Maroon took a deep breath.Â
âVelvie giving you trouble?â He asked, smirking.Â
âNo, theyâre not in here.â Thornâs eyes widened.
âTheyâre not?â Maroon stepped out of the doorway, letting Thorn pass. Thorn looked around the room for a few moments.Â
âHuh. Whereâd she go then?âÂ
âThatâs what I need your help with,â they replied, holding out the note, âI found this on the bedside table. Can you read it for me?â Their friend nodded, taking the small piece of paper. Ae looked at it for several seconds before shaking aer head.
âItâs in some other language. Latin, if I had to take a guess. I canât read this.âÂ
âTry and read it out loud, then. Iâll translate.â Thorn let out a groan.
âGods, I hate reading Latin.â Maroon chuckled and sat down on the perfectly made bed. Thorn sat down next to them.
âHere goes nothing,â Thorn mumbled, ââZaeor, apud Unorem consilium quaero.ââ Maroonâs eyes widened.
âSheâs going to Unorâs base?â they breathed.
âNoli sequi. Necesse est ut sĹla id faciam. Te vocÄbĹ posteÄâ. And then they just signed their name.â Maroonâs heartbeat raced as they took the note from Thorn. The older teen looked up at them.
âSo what are we doing?â it asked. Maroon was quiet for a moment.
âWeâre going after them,â they said, standing, âThey probably took the Umbrella, but we can take Rhymeâs ship.â Thorn nodded, standing as well.Â
âIâll go get the others. We can leave ASAP-âÂ
âNo,â Maroon interrupted, ââNon sequiâ. She doesnât want anyone to follow her.â
âI feel like what she wants doesnât matter in this case,â Thorn muttered. Maroon brushed the comment off and turned to the door.
âThe two of us will go. What if theyâre in danger? We have to help.âÂ
âI mean, Iâm with you on that part. Even if itâs Velvet,â Thorn began, âBut I donât know how comfortable I am with just taking Rhymeâs ship.âÂ
âI donât see another option.â Thorn closed their eyes for several moments.
âYeah, okay. If youâre sure. Letâs go.âÂ
Velvet looked up and down the hallway before sprinting into the next door. They shut the door quietly and took a deep breath.
Just a few more offices until his, she thought, Hopefully I can find something before then. They were picking up a folder off of the desk in front of them when a loud alarm began to blare. Velvet immediately set the folder down, but the sound continued.Â
Trapped folder? Whatâs in here- She picked the folder up again when the door slammed open. Velvet quickly threw Kil-layye Moâore towards it before turning around. A familiar squeak hit her ears.Â
âMaroon?â They breathed. Maroon waved slightly, standing up. The door shut, revealing Thorn behind it.Â
âOh it's our lucky day, huh?â the prince began, âShe was behind the first door we checked.â Velvet balled their fists and glared at Thorn.Â
âWhat the hell are you two doing here?âÂ
âWe found your note,â Maroon answered. Velvetâs eyes widened.Â
âWhat? It was in Latin, howâd you-â Velvet looked Maroon in the eyes, who tugged slightly on the sleeves of their red sweater.Â
âHow long have you been able to understand Latin?â the assassin demanded.
âAbout 500 years,â Maroon mumbled quietly. Velvet groaned loudly, summoning her sword back to her hand.Â
âOf fucking course. Listen, I donât know what youâre doing-â
âWe wanted to make sure youâre okay,â Maroon began, âYou were upset last night and then suddenly youâre breaking into B.A.D. and- I just wanted to help.âÂ
âAnd Iâm here too,â Thorn added.
âUgh, okay. But I donât need your help. Iâm fine on my own.â Maroon placed a hand on Velvetâs shoulder and smiled.
âI know. But this way, we can make sure.â Velvet looked them up and down before sighing.Â
âFine, whatever. Did you two set off the alarm?â Thorn sheepishly raised aer hand.
âThat oneâs my bad. I didnât realise the cameras were on.â Velvet blinked a few times.Â
âHowâŚwhat? Why would they be off?âÂ
âI donât know!â Velvet groaned again and sheathed Kil-layye Moâore.Â
âYouâre an idiot, frĹŤx.â
âHey, weâre here to sav-â Maroon cut them off.
âIs there any way to shut it off?âÂ
Thereâs an off switch in Unorâs office, but thatâs way too far away to reach without getting caught right now. Whereâs the other one⌠Velvetâs eyes widened and they quickly turned to the door.Â
âFollow me. Weâve got to go visit my mom.â
Solana sat awkwardly at the breakfast table in between Mad and Rhyme, taking a bite of her eggs. Their companions refused to meet each other's eyes. Rhyme pushed his eggs back and forth on his plate while Mad looked towards the ceiling.
âSo,â the elf tried, âThose kids, huh?âÂ
âMhm,â Rhyme mumbled. Mad stayed silent. Solana waited a few moments before setting her fork down.Â
âRhyme, how far do you think they couldâve gotten?â Rhyme looked up at them.Â
âIf they figured out the boosters, they could be two galaxies away already.â Solana sighed.Â
âLetâs hope Zaeor can find them soon, then.â Silence took over the room again. Mad eventually stood and took Solanaâs empty plate.Â
âIâm going to my room,â Mad stated. Solana quickly stood up and jumped over the counter, blocking its exit.
âOh no you donât,â he said, crossing his arms. Mad looked them up and down.Â
âDo you need something, Solana?âÂ
âMore like you two need to talk,â the elf replied, âNow sit your robot ass back down.â Mad sighed.
âSolana, itâs really none of your business-â
âItâs either I do this, or Velvet does it when the teens get back. And I think youâd prefer me.â The droid was silent for a moment before returning to their seat. Solana smiled and hopped back on the counter, taking a seat in the middle.
âSo, are you two gonna be able to mediate yourselves like adults, or do I have to sit here?â Rhyme looked up at Mad, who looked away. Solana rolled his eyes.
âSitting here it is then,â they crossed their right leg over their left, âWhat happened at Elizaâs?âÂ
âSolana, really? Everything is fine-â
âClearly not, if Rhyme here got as upset as she did on the UPS mission.â Rhymeâs cheeks became a light pink and she sunk deeper into her seat. Mad looked at her.
âRhyme? What are they talking about?â The thief took a deep breath.
âMad, Iâm really really sorry,â he blurted out, âI fucked up really bad and I hurt you and Iâd take it back if I could but I canât and I justâŚâ His voice faded out.
âYou justâŚ?âÂ
âIâŚdonât want to lose you. I canât lose you. YouâreâŚwellâŚâ The teen looked up at Solana, who motioned for her to continue.Â
âYouâre the only person who has cared about me in, god, 5 years?â He chuckled nervously, âYouâre my only friend. I fucked up, I know that, and Iâm sorry. And Iâll do anything to make it up to you. Because I donât think I could handle losing you.â Mad was silent as it stared at him. The two made eye contact, or as much eye contact as they could considering one was a robot. A minute passed before Mad spoke.Â
âRhymeâŚâ they began, âWhat you didâŚin front of meâŚit really fucked me up.â Solanaâs eyes widened.Â
I donât think Iâve ever heard Mad curse before, they thought, glancing at Rhyme. The teen seemed to be having a similar thought.Â
âI know, and Iâm sorry-â
âIâm not done,â Mad interrupted, âI canât look at you without seeing her bleeding out on the floor over and over again. My programming keeps analysing it, looking for some way for me to change it. But I canât. And you canât change what youâve done.â Rhyme looked to the floor, but nodded. Solana frowned.
âMad?â the elf asked. Mad groaned.
âCould you two let me finish my thought?âÂ
âShit- sorry.â Mad sighed and stood up. It took Rhymeâs hand and pulled her up to her feet. Rhymeâs eyes widened as he looked at them.Â
âAs upset andâŚfrustrated as I am about it, I think Iâm more upset at the situation than you,â it mumbled, holding both of her hands, âI mean, Iâm still upset, but I care about you too. AndâŚI canât lose you too.â Solana smirked.Â
âS-so, do you forgive me?â Rhyme asked, the light pink returning to his face. Mad chuckled slightly.
âYeah, I guess I do.â Rhyme smiled brightly and pulled them into a hug.Â
And thatâs how you do it, Solana thought, Damn, if only that worked on Velvet. My life would be so much easier.Â
âDonât do it again,â Mad added before glancing up at Solana, âBut thatâs the most genuine apology Iâve heard in my entire time being with the mafia.â The elf rolled their eyes.Â
âHey, donât look at me. What do I have to apologise for?âÂ
âMy screwdriver.â Rhyme suppressed a laugh while Solana glared at the robot.Â
âI didnât fucking take your screwdriver.â
âI donât believe Velvet snuck past all four of us without help.âÂ
âSheâs the best assassin in the universe, of course she can!â Rhyme finally couldnât keep it in anymore and broke out in loud laughter.Â
âHave you seen her?â Rhyme pushed their face into Madâs shirt to muffle her laughter. Mad stared down at him, wide eyes taking over the previously blank screen. Solana raised an eyebrow and jumped to the other side of the counter.Â
âI think thatâs my cue to go,â she said, gesturing to the door, âIâll go check on Wyatt.â
âSolana-â The elf sprinted to the stairs, leaving the two of them in the kitchen alone.
Â
Nala took a deep breath as she ran a brush through her hair. She pulled a section in front of her shoulder and stared into the mirror on her vanity. She was halfway through braiding it when there was a knock at the door. Nala frowned and checked her watch.
Unorâs not supposed to be here until 11:30, she thought, Itâs only 10.Â
âWho is it?â She called out.Â
âTua fÄŤlia, mater,â A familiar voice answered. Nalaâs eyes went wide.Â
âVelvet?â She breathed. She quickly stood and opened the door, revealing her 15-year-old daughter in front of her. Two of her teammates, Maroon and Thorn if she remembered correctly, stood behind her. Nala pulled Velvet into a big hug.Â
âOh, Velvet,â she breathed, hugging her tightly.Â
âHi Mom. Can we come in?â Nala let go and smiled.Â
âOf course.â The teens entered the room, Velvet shutting the door behind her.
âHey Velvetâs mom,â The redhead, Thorn, said. Nala waved at him.Â
âHello, Thorn was it?â The teen nodded, so Nala turned to the other one, âAnd youâre Maroon?âÂ
âMhm,â Maroon answered. She smiled.
âItâs lovely to see you two again. How have you been?â
âGood-â Velvet walked to the other side of the room, where a large computer set up sat. Nala looked at her daughter.
âWhat are you doing, Velvet?â
âShutting down the alarm, give me a sec.â Nala frowned.Â
âYou set off an alarm?â Velvet groaned.
âNo, those asinÄŤ did.âÂ
AsinÄŤ? I donât think I know that one.
âWell Iâm sorry I donât know the entire B.A.D. mansion by heart,â Thorn apologised sarcastically, âI didnât grow up here.â
âI didnât fucking ask you to come-â
âLanguage,â Nala corrected. Velvet groaned.
âSorry, mom. I didnât ask you two to follow me. In fact, I think I explicitly said donât.âÂ
âIn our defence, you told Zaeor not to follow you,â Maroon chimed in. Velvet turned and glared at them.Â
ââCause I was under the impression no one else spoke Latin. I guess Iâm learning a lot today.â Nala chuckled and stood next to Velvet in the chair. The teen typed quickly and eventually got into the main security system. She paused on the screen for a few seconds.
âLeft side, dear,â Nala stated. Velvet pressed the button and the bright âSystem Normalâ status blinked green.Â
âThanks, mater.â She clicked out of the security but pulled up the files application.
âWhat are you three doing here anyway?â Nala asked, turning to look at Thorn and Maroon as well, âAnd why didnât you want your teammates to come with you?â
âBecause sheâs an angsty bitch,â Thorn mumbled.Â
âLanguage.â
âSorry, Mrs. Bolton.â Nala chuckled.
âPlease, just Nala.â
âIâm looking into some information about something we found at a UPS headquarters. Do you know anything about Unor going to the station on Kenip?â Nala thought for a moment.
âI know he went there, but Iâm not sure what for. I think it was just a routine drop-off he wanted to go on.â
âYeah, thatâs what I thought,â Velvet mumbled, âWhat about December 9th? Have you heard anything about something then?â At the same time, they typed the date into the search bar.
âThatâs the day of our winter fundraiser.â
âFundraiser?â Thorn asked, âArenât you guys like, rich?â Maroon put a hand on Thornâs shoulder.
âThorn-â Nala laughed and waved a hand.
âItâs alright, Maroon. Itâs a fundraiser for a missing kid organisation, part of my plan to improve B.A.D.âs public image. It was also originally planned to help look for Velvet, butâŚâ she gestured to Velvet, who rolled her eyes.Â
âThatâs sweet, how you never gave up looking for her,â Maroon said, smiling, âFrom the way Velvet used to talk about her parents, I thought you two didnât get along.â Nala frowned and looked down at her daughter. Velvet, however, turned to glare at Maroon.
âI never said that.â
âI know. I just thought since you hated Unor so much-â Velvet looked back at the screen.Â
âSheâs just as much of a victim as we are.âÂ
â...we?â Maroon looked towards the floor, and Thorn took their hand.Â
âThatâs actually another thing I should look for,â Velvet mumbled under her breath. They typed Maroonâs name into the search bar.
âVelvet, thatâs not what we came for,â Thorn said, âWe donât need to-â
âShut it, Thorn.â The screen loaded for a moment before a grey âNo Resultsâ tab popped up. Velvet sighed.Â
âThatâs about what I expected. Maroon, what was the name on the folder again?âÂ
âProject Rapio.â Nala paused.
âNow that name Iâve heard before,â she stated. Velvet looked up at her.
âWhat do you know?âÂ
âItâs been Unorâs new project for the past few weeks,â Nala sat down on her bed, âHe didnât tell me much, just that he would be redirecting resources to it for the next few weeks.â
âSo the folder was right,â Velvet breathed.Â
âWhat folder?â Velvet stood and turned to her teammates.Â
âI have to search Unorâs office. Are you two coming with me?â Nala grabbed her wrist.
âNow wait just a second, young lady,â she said. Velvet looked at her.
âWhat, mater?âÂ
âFirst, drop the attitude. Thatâs no way to talk to your mother.â Thorn stifled a laugh as Velvet broke her wrist out of Nalaâs grip.
âSorry.â
âSecondly, Unorâs in a meeting there right now. Youâd get caught immediately.â Velvet groaned.
âDo you know when heâll be done?â
â11. Then heâs meeting me here at 11:30 so we can go make plans for the fundraiser.â Velvet mumbled something that Nala couldnât make out. Maroon took her hand, drawing her attention.Â
âWe could stay in here until she leaves with him?â they asked, turning to Nala, âIf youâre okay with that, Nala.â She smiled.
âOf course Iâm okay with that. Iâd never pass up a chance to hang out with my lovely daughter.â She pulled Velvet into another hug, one that she tried to wrestle out of this time. Nala won out, of course. She always did.Â
âSo, uh,â Mad began, looking down at Rhyme, âWhat was Solana talking about with the mission yesterday?â Rhyme lifted his head to look at the ground.
âOh- uh- that was nothing.âÂ
âI canât help but think thatâs a lie.âÂ
âItâs not!â Rhyme said quickly, looking up at them, âI was just overwhelmed and thought you hated me.âÂ
âYou know I can just text Maroon and ask, right?â Rhyme let out a strained laugh.
âMaybe theyâre ignoring you.â Rhyme narrowed her eyes.Â
âDo you know something I donât?â
âMaybe,â it said, âMaybe they talked to me before they left and I told them how to fly your ship.â
âMad!â The droid laughed.Â
âWhy would you do that?â Rhyme demanded, âWhere are they going, anyhow?âÂ
âThat part they didnât tell me. They just said Velvet ran off and they wanted to go after her. So I told them.âÂ
âI donât know why you wouldnât just tell them to take all of us,â Rhyme replied.Â
âThey said Velvet had said she didnât want to be followed. I figured they could handle it.â
âBut my baby-â Mad laughed again as Rhyme fake-pouted.Â
âYour baby will be fine,â Mad replied.
âWell yeah, youâre right here,â Rhyme mumbled. Mad looked down at her.
âWhat was that?â Rhymeâs heartbeat raced and he blushed.
âNothing, donât worry about it.â Rhyme looked down at her hands, still in Madâs. He quickly pulled them back and stuffed them into his pockets. Mad pulled out their phone and quickly typed a message. After a few seconds, it beeped.Â
âOh, they found Velvet. Theyâre with them and their mom now.âÂ
âNalaâs in on it?â Rhyme asked, âI shouldnât be surprised, actually. She was the nicer of the two.â Mad nodded.
âI think sheâs one of the only people Iâve heard Velvet talk about positively.â Another ding and a smirk appeared on Madâs screen.
âMaroon said whatever you said yesterday was important.â Rhymeâs heart skipped a beat.
Dammit, Maroon. Fucking traitor.Â
âI donât think so,â Rhyme replied, crossing her arms.Â
âHold on, they just texted what you said.â Rhyme jumped forward, knocking the phone out of the droid's hand. Rhyme tripped over Madâs foot, falling onto Mad. The two landed on the ground, Mad laughing loudly. Rhyme glared at the phone.Â
âI was joking, Rhyme, I didnât even ask them. I was just getting an update,â Mad said, looking up at her. Rhyme switched his glare to them.
âScared the shit outta me, strange robot.âÂ
âAlthough, I might text them about it now considering thatâs how youâre reacting.â Rhyme held Madâs shoulders down and shook his head.Â
âCanât do that if I keep you here away from your phone.âÂ
âAre you sure about that?â Mad chuckled, âRhyme, Iâm a robot.âÂ
âShit.â Mad laughed again, a bright smile appearing on their screen.Â
âIâm just kidding. Maroon probably wouldnât tell me, anyway.â Rhyme sighed, taking her hands off Madâs shoulders.
âGood.â
âI am curious, though,â Mad added, âYou donât have to tell me, but I do wanna know.âÂ
âMaybe Iâll tell you. Eventually.â Mad displayed the eyes emoji, which promptly spun around. Rhyme stared at it before breaking out into laughter.
âWhat?â The droid asked.Â
âWhat are you doing?âÂ
âRolling my eyes.â That response only made the thief laugh harder. She set her forehead on their chest while she laughed.Â
âWhoâŚwho told you to do that?â he asked through laughs.Â
âThorn. Why, does it look stupid?â Rhyme shook his head.
âNo. Never stop doing that.â Mad shrugged as the thief sat up.
âIf you say so.â The two looked at each other for a few moments. Madâs screen changed to a smile, causing Rhyme to frown. It switched to a question mark.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhat did I just say?â Madâs screen went blank.
âHuh? Oh- you meant-â Rhyme laughed again, shaking her head.
âNo, Iâm kidding.â Madâs screen displayed the rolling eyes again anyways.
âBetter?â it asked.Â
âBetter.â Mad laughed before looking Rhyme in the eyes.
âCan I stand up now?â Rhymeâs face went bright red and he quickly scrambled to get off of the droid.Â
âSorry-âÂ
âItâs okay. Are you gonna finish your breakfast?â Mad asked, gesturing to the full plate.Â
âRight, yeah. Kinda got interrupted during that, huh?â
âThat would mean you actually started eating.â Rhymeâs eyes widened.Â
âI thought you werenât looking at me earlier?â Mad shook their TV.
âMy camera was looking at you, the TV wasnât.â
ââCourse, how silly of me.â Mad nodded as the thief sat down at the table. It joined her, this time sitting to her right. Rhyme smiled and took a bite.
âHow is it?âÂ
âPerfect,â Rhyme answered.
Just like you.
Velvet led the way down the hallway, Thorn and Maroon following behind. Nala had cleared out the area a few minutes before, but Velvet had Kil-layye Moâore drawn anyway. They passed down a set of brown double doors with several stickers on it. Thorn looked at them: a rainbow, stars, and the letter c sat in the middle. It looked like there were more letters, but they had fallen off.Â
âWhatâs in there?â Thorn asked. Velvet didnât even turn around to look at the door before responding.
âNothing.â
âDoesnât look like nothing.âÂ
âDrop it, frĹŤx,â Velvet hissed. The prince put their hands up.Â
âRight, got it.â The trio walked for another minute before Velvet stopped in front of another set of double doors. These ones were blank, and a deeper brown than the other ones. Velvet took a deep breath.Â
âWeâre here.â Maroon looked down at her.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay with this, Velvet?â
âOf course Iâm fucking not. But we donât have a choice, now do we?âÂ
âIâm sure we could figure something else out. We could ask Nala-âÂ
âNo,â Velvet stated coldly, âSheâs endangered herself enough today. Iâm not letting her get hurt again. Letâs just get this over with.â Maroon frowned as Velvet pushed the big doors open, Kil-layye Moâore raised. They creaked slightly but revealed an office with a large black desk ordained with various trinkets and papers. A laptop sat on top of it, open. There were three chairs around the desk: one on the side of the laptop and two with their backs towards the door.Â
Paintings lined the walls depicting old buildings and other people, presumably older members of the Bolton family considering their similarity to Velvet. The walls were a deep, blood red with black sigils lining the middle. Thorn pointed them out.
âAny idea what those say?â He asked out loud.Â
âDonât look at them for too long. Theyâre a form of security.â Thorn quickly looked away.
âUnorâs got a lot of magic access for a mortal,â ae mumbled.Â
âItâs really not that surprising. Heâs not that far off from becoming a fake god.â That sentence caused Maroon and Thorn to stop dead in their tracks.Â
â...what?â Maroon breathed. Velvet turned back to look at them. Her red hair fell out of the clip, so she adjusted it while she talked.Â
âYou didnât know?â
âI think you conveniently forgot to mention that part,â Thorn replied through gritted teeth. Velvet just shrugged.Â
âWell now you know.âÂ
âWhat do you mean ânot that far offâ?â Maroon asked. Velvet sat down in the main desk chair and typed something into the laptop.
âSame fucking password, what a fucking idiot,â they mumbled, âI mean heâs not far off. Heâs got four and a half of the five souls he needs, so heâs almost there.âÂ
âSouls?â Thorn demanded, âHow exactly does one become a fake god?â Velvet groaned.
âDid I really forget to explain this?âÂ
âI wouldnât be asking otherwise.â
âI donât know, youâre you,â the assassin mumbled, âTo become a fake god, someone needs to collect one soul of each type. Unorâs got four and a half.â Maroon took a step forward.Â
âHalf?â Velvet refocused on the laptop, typing more into the keyboard. Maroon opened their mouth to say something more but stayed quiet.Â
âDamn it, this is wiped clean,â they mumbled, âItâs almost likeâŚâ Thorn stared at her.
âIf you say what I think youâre going to say, VelvieâŚâ
âHe knows weâre here,â Maroon said in a small voice. Velvet quickly stood from the chair and joined the duo.
âHow could he know weâre here?â Thorn asked, âThereâs no way.â
âHe must have found out about the UPS break-in and put two and two together,â Velvet answered. They pushed the doors open again, this time a loud alarm blaring again.Â
âSo that whole planning thing with Nala was bullshit?âÂ
âMaybe not. I hope it wasnât. I hope heâs not here and is just hoping his guards will be able to capture us.âÂ
âThe guards that are also him,â Thorn muttered. Velvet nodded and stepped out into the hallway, making a run for it back where they came. The other two quickly followed.
âIf we can get back to Nalaâs room, could we-âÂ
âToo dangerous,â Velvet interrupted Maroon, âThereâs another security panel in the library, but thatâs way further. I donât know if weâll make it.â
âAnd thereâs no chance theyâre gonna fall for the false alarm from Nala for a second time,â Thorn added. Velvet nodded. Footsteps began thudding behind them, voices shouting in various languages Thorn didnât know. Velvet glanced backward.
âOne of you, make a wall.â Thorn obliged, a wall of vines growing and blocking the hallway behind them. They added a horizontal layer as well, just in case. In front of them, a large metal door slammed shut. Velvet quickly stopped in their tracks, breathing heavily.
âFuck,â they said.Â
âW-whatâs that mean?â Maroon asked.Â
âFull lockdownâs been activated. We canât get out that way. Or any way, for that matter.âÂ
âThen whatâs the plan?â Thorn demanded. Velvet glared at him.
âIâm fucking working on it, Thorn.â The voices behind the vine wall grew louder as Velvet scanned the hallway. A few feet ahead stood the sticker-covered doors once again. The assassinâs eyes locked on it right as Thornâs did.
Â
Maroon looked at their two friends as they both looked ahead. They followed their gaze to the door from earlier, the one Velvet had dismissed.Â
âFuck, okay,â she breathed, running forward. Maroon and Thorn followed. Velvet slowed in front of them and carefully tried the doorknob. The door gave way, warm sunlight fading in from the large bay window on the opposite side of the room. Maroon glanced at Velvet, who had her eyes closed tight. She took a deep breath and, once Maroon and Thorn were inside, shut the door.Â
The room was well-lit from the window alone, a pair of blue curtains hanging from the rod above them. The right corner had a large canopy bed, decorated with blue and purple bedsheets. There were four pillows on top and an extra blanket folded neatly at the end. Pictures of butterflies and various star systems sat above the bed, forming a star.Â
A large rug was in the middle, a blue flower. The opposite side of the room from the bed had a desk with a textbook open on top of it. The chair was pushed in and a layer of dust had begun to form on the pages. A closet was pushed up against the wall the door was on, slightly ajar.Â
Velvet slowly turned around, taking in the scene. Maroon watched as they walked towards the window.Â
âWhoâs room is this?â Thorn asked, crossing his arms. Velvet sat down at the window, looking out. Maroon walked towards the open textbook.Â
âThis is- was. This was a friend of mineâs bedroom.â Maroon looked down at the book, wiping the dust off. There sat a name.
âCaran?â Maroon read, âOhâŚthatâs who Caran was.â Velvet nodded, standing again.Â
âTry not to touch anything, okay?â Maroon wiped their hand on their trousers. Velvet joined them at the desk and glanced down at the book.Â
ââCourse thatâs what he was reading,â they mumbled. Maroon looked down at them.
âWhat is it?âÂ
âAlgebra.âÂ
âWhatâsâŚalgebra?â Velvet stared at them for a few seconds.
âIâll let Mad handle that one.â Maroon nodded but kept their eyes on Velvet. The assassin slowly opened a drawer and their eyes widened.Â
âJackpot,â they breathed. They pulled out a laptop, similar to the one from Unorâs office. They sat down back at the window and opened it up. Maroon sat next to them and Thorn joined on the other side of Maroon.Â
âHis laptop?â Thorn asked, âHowâs that gonna help?âÂ
âUnorâs not going to limit a dead personâs access to classified documents. Thatâs his one weakness: heâs cocky. He killed someone, so thereâs no point controlling what they can see.â Maroonâs heart skipped a beat.
âHe killed Caran?â Maroon asked.
âOf course he fucking did. Are you even surprised?âÂ
â...no.â Velvet typed in another passcode and smirked.Â
âAnd weâre in. Project RapioâŚâ They clicked on a file and quickly scanned it.Â
âThat looks like the one we found at the UPS,â Maroon commented. Velvet nodded.Â
âIt is.â
âAnything new?â Thorn asked. Velvet closed the document and opened up the next.Â
âIâm looking, give me a minute.â Thorn looked around Maroon to read the screen.
âThatâs in English?â
âYeah. It must be the memo he sent to the lower-ranking operatives. They typically canât read Latin.â Thorn was quiet for a moment before his eyes widened.Â
âUnorâs trying to capture us for one of our souls?â it exclaimed. Velvet slammed the laptop closed and stood.Â
âWe should get out of here,â she mumbled, âWeâll have to break the window.â Maroon glanced at Thorn, who was staring at Velvet.
âVelvet, did I read that right?â
âI have no clue what youâre talking about, Thorn.â
Soul? If he already has 4 and a half, why would he want⌠their eyes locked on Velvet, Oh.Â
âVelvet, that half a soul Unor has,â Maroon said quietly, âItâs yours, isnât it?â Velvet turned back to glare at them.
âSo what if it is? It doesnât change anything.âÂ
âOh my gods,â Maroon breathed, âVelvet, Iâm so sorry-â
âIs that why youâre soâŚyou?â Thorn asked. Maroon stared down at them.
âThorn-â
âWhat? That was the nicest way I could think of.âÂ
âJust fucking drop it, will you?â Velvet demanded, âItâs not that big of a deal.â She jumped onto the window seat and drew Kil-layye Moâore, using the hilt to break the glass. Maroon and Thorn quickly moved out of the way.Â
âIt is a big deal, though. Youâre missing half of your soul, your personality, yourâŚemotions.â Maroon let the last word hang in the air as Velvet sheathed her sword again. Thorn looked between Maroon and Velvet.
âSo all this time, Iâve been calling you a bitch for ignoring your emotions,â the prince began, âBut you havenât been. You just havenât had emotions?âÂ
âIâm done talking about this with you two. Just forget you ever figured this out, okay?âÂ
âVelvet, stop.â Maroon grabbed their wrist, forcing them to look back at them.Â
âWhat do you want, fungus?âÂ
âHow long has your soul been broken?â Velvet groaned.
âAre we really going to do this?âÂ
âThe quicker you answer our questions, the quicker we can leave,â Thorn added. Velvet glanced at each of them before sighing.
âFine. Since shortly after my 14th birthday.âÂ
Nearly two years, Maroon thought, Dear Ailuj-
âDoes Zaeor know?â Velvet scoffed.
âOf course he fucking knows. Heâs what stopped him from taking the whole thing.â Maroonâs eyes widened.Â
âSo thatâs what you meant,â Thorn said. The two of them looked towards him.
âWhat?â
âYou keep saying that he saved your life. I thought that was after you started working for him, but it's why youâre working for him.â Velvet rolled her eyes.
âThatâs what you choose to focus on?â
Sheâs been like this since before the mafia was formed. How did no one notice?
âI donât control where my brain goes, Velvie.â
Does anyone in the mafia know? WeâŚwe couldâveâŚI couldâveâŚ
âDo not fucking call me that, especially-â
âWhy didnât you say anything?â Maroon blurted out. Velvet turned to them.
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhy didnât you tell anyone? Me, Mad, anyone. We couldâve helped you sooner.â Velvet narrowed their eyes at them.
âBecause thereâs no way to help me, Maroon.â The youngest teenâs heart skipped a beat again as they looked at her.Â
âThere has to be something.â
âThereâs not, Zaeorâs checked. Iâm stuck like this for the rest of my life.â
âFuck, thatâs morbid,â Thorn muttered. Velvet sent a glare aer way.Â
âSo is my entire life. Get used to it.âÂ
âWhat if Unor was dead?â Maroon asked. The two teens refocused on them, Thornâs eyes wide.
âWhat are you talking about, Maroon?â Thorn asked.Â
âIf Unor was dead, wouldnât all the souls be released? Couldnât you get it back then?â Velvet frowned.
âIn theory, but thereâs no guarantee-â
âBut itâs possible?â
âMaroon, are you saying we should-â Velvet cut Thorn off.
âYeah, I guess itâs possible.â
If killing Unor could fix Velvetâs soulâŚafter everything heâs done, whatâs stopping us?
âThen letâs attack Unor first,â Maroon stated, âWeâve been on the defensive this whole time. The day heâs actually planning on attacking us, we attack first. Stage a full assault on this base. Take it over and end this.â Velvet stared at Maroon for several moments. Thorn took their hand but Maroon didnât take their eyes off of the assassin in front of them.Â
âYouâre right,â Velvet finally replied, âThatâs what weâll do.â Maroon took a deep breath and nodded.Â
âMushroom, are you sure you want to-â
âYes. Iâm sure.â Velvet held a hand out to Maroon and the three teens stood on the windowsill. Thorn had a concerned look on his face as he stared at Maroon.Â
âOne of you want to make something to get us down?â Velvet asked. A giant mushroom sprouted from the ground, stopping right in front of them. Maroon led the way onto the pileus.

An hour after âThe AssassinationâÂ
âWe are not bringing Diamonds on a mission with us,â Velvet spat, crossing her arms. Madâs screen was blank as they turned towards Solana.
âI agree with Velvet on this one. Thereâs too much that can go wrong.âÂ
âI donât see what your guys' problem is,â Solana replied, âWe could use an extra fighter tonight. Velvet, you said yourself thereâs supposed to be twice as many guards as last time.âÂ
âWeâre better as a cohesive team, Solana. Diamonds would throw a wrench into the plans.â
âWhatâs the alternative, leave him here alone?âÂ
âHer and Wyatt, probably.â
âNo, he can go to his own house. Tell him to take the child with him for all I care. Thereâs no need for her to come with us.âÂ
âIf yâall could stop talking about me like Iâm not here, thatâd be great,â Rhyme called out. The trio turned to look at the teen, who was sitting on a Madbay bed with an IV coming out of her arm. Bandages wrapped around his abdomen and the heart monitor beeped. The child was on another bed, fast asleep. He didnât seem injured, but Mad had bandaged him up anyway.Â
âSorry,â the robot mumbled.Â
âAlso, I donât think Diamonds is in any shape to go on a mission,â Velvet added.Â
âIâm fine, Bolton. And like I said earlier, I want to help,â the thief replied.Â
âAnd like I said earlier, I donât care.â Solana sighed.
âWhy donât we take a vote out of the whole team? I think Maroon and Thorn are finally awake.â Velvet looked at the elf and sighed.
âFine, whatever. My vote is no.â
âMine as well,â Mad stated. Rhyme frowned and looked up at Mad, who refused to meet his eyes. Velvet crossed her arms.
The hell is wrong with them?Â
âWell, my vote is for yes. Iâll go talk to the others, see what they think.â Solana turned on his heel and walked out of the Madbay, Mad following behind. Velvet watched them leave before looking back to Rhyme.
âThe fuck you do to them?â she demanded.
âHuh?âÂ
âMad would never want you to go home. Clearly you did something while you were out to piss them off.â Rhyme let out a strained laugh.Â
âOh, and you know Mad so much better than I do.â
âI live with them, fĹŤr. And I know they love your company. So something happened and I want to know what.âÂ
âVelvet, I have no idea what youâre talking about.â The assassin crossed her arms and sat down on the kidâs bed. He moved slightly, but Velvet ignored it.Â
âThere mustâve been some kind of complication. Maybe you didnât tell it about your injury. Or Wyatt got hurt and you brushed it off. Hell, maybe you even lied about the mission in the first place.â Rhyme looked towards the floor. Velvet smirked.
Bingo.
âYou called them at like, 5 am this morning saying you wanted to rescue Elizaâs new kid. But that wasnât it, was it?âÂ
âItâs none of your fucking business, Bolton,â Rhyme shouted. The kid moved again, catching his attention.Â
âCareful, Reuter, youâll wake your brother.â The kid stopped moving around and Rhymeâs eyes once again locked on Velvetâs, glaring.
âI donât appreciate the interrogation, Bolton.â
âAnd I donât appreciate you fucking up one of my team members before a crucial mission.â Rhyme let out a strained laugh and crossed his arms.
âHow crucial could breaking into the UPS be? I do it all the time. Itâs never anything of use.â Velvet frowned.Â
âYouâve broken into the UPS before?âÂ
âThatâs what I just said.â She looked away from the thief and out the window. Clouds were forming around the mansion, a rare sight on the planet.Â
Maybe Solana had a point, they thought, Rhyme might be a good asset to have tonight. Itâll give me more time to figure out what the hell happened, and placing any blame on him would help with the mediaâŚI just donât want-
âVelvet!â Solanaâs voice shouted, startling the assassin out of their thoughts. The Madbay door slammed open and the elf came through, their hands in the pockets of their jeans.
âThe votes are in, Diamondsâs coming with us.â Velvet locked eyes with Rhyme, who smirked, before sighing.
âFine, whatever.â Two arms suddenly wrapped around her stomach and a face pressed against her side. Velvet quickly looked down to see the kid, now pressed against them.Â
âFucking-â
âIâm scared!â The kid shouted, hanging onto the assassin tighter. Velvet looked around at the two other people in the room. Rhyme and Solana looked at each other before breaking out in laughter. Velvet attempted to push the kid off but he wouldnât budge.Â
âDiamonds, get this fucking thing off of me,â the assassin growled. Rhyme continued laughing.Â
âItâs just a child, Velvet,â Solana said as she caught her breath, âWhatâs your name, bud?â The kid looked up at him.
âWyatt.â
âHey Wyatt, why donât you go with Solana?â Rhyme prompted, âTheyâre the elf.â The child shook his head and pressed it closer to Velvet. The teen groaned and stood. To their surprise, the kid held on. The sudden weight nearly caused her to fall to the ground but she quickly steadied herself.Â
âWhat do you want, kid?â she muttered.
âDonât leave me alone. Please.âÂ
âMihi deĹs,â Velvet groaned, âIf I take you to Mad, will you leave me alone?â He looked up at her for a few moments before eventually nodding. Velvet sighed and adjusted the kid to be on their back. Solana laughed and held the door open for them. She paused at the door, turning back toward Rhyme.Â
âOh and, Reuter,â they began, âIâm going to talk to Mad about this. If I found out you hurt a mafia memberâŚâ They let the threat sit in the air as they turned and walked out, leaving a very confused Solana standing in the doorway.Â
12:15.Â
Mad stirred the red soup, the grilled cheese sitting on the pan. Maroon and Thorn were setting the table. The sound of plates hitting wood and metal being set on table mats came from its left.Â
12:16.Â
They were done setting the table now and sat in the wooden chairs. Mad flipped one of the six sandwiches and turned to them.Â
âThorn, you said you only wanted one side crispy?â The teen nodded, smirking.
âIt makes it taste better.â
âI disagree,â Maroon mumbled, but Mad just nodded. They slid the sandwich onto their hand and set it down on Thornâs plate.Â
âMad!â Velvetâs voice carried down the entryway, their footsteps echoing off the walls. Mad glanced up at the clock.Â
12:17.Â
âThere, kid. Thereâs Mad. Will you get off me now?â Velvet said, stopping in the kitchen doorway. Maroon and Thornâs eyes quickly fell on Wyatt, who jumped down from Velvetâs back. He grabbed onto the robotâs leg and smiled up at them.
âMad!âÂ
âHi, Wyatt. Are you okay?âÂ
âHe woke up and attached himself to me,â the assassin began, âRefused to get off until he saw you.â Mad sighed and kneeled down to his level. The bandages were starting to fall off of his arm, no doubt from Velvet carrying him. The bruise seemed to be healing nicely, though.
âAre you feeling better?â they asked. He nodded.
âCould someone explain who that is?â Thorn asked, pointing at Wyatt. Mad kept their eyes on Wyatt.Â
âDo you want some grilled cheese and tomato soup?â He nodded vigorously. Mad gestured to the table, and he sprinted over to take a seat.Â
âThatâs Wyatt,â it began, âHe was recently adopted by Diamondsâs foster mom, Eliza Gracy, but we saved him this morning. Heâll be here for a bit until we can find him a good home.â Thornâs mouth made a big âOâ while Maroon turned to look at him.Â
âHi Wyatt, my name is Maroon.â Mad carried a grilled cheese and bowl of soup over to the child, setting it down in front of him. It then turned to Velvet.Â
âAre you hungry? Do you want some lunch?âÂ
âNot really, no. What the hell happened on that mission?â The teen demanded. Mad paused for a moment before turning back to the stove.
âLanguage, Velvet!â Thorn shouted, covering Wyattâs ears, âThere are little ears around now.â Wyatt squirmed out of Thornâs hands.
âFuck you, frĹŤx.â Mad placed a sandwich on a plate and handed it to Velvet.
âEat.â
âI told you, Mad-âÂ
âI can almost guarantee youâve barely eaten today, Velvet. Would you prefer the soup instead?â The assassin narrowed her eyes but took the plate.
âNo. Soup is fucking weird. But youâre telling me what happened.âÂ
âOf course,â the droid said quietly, âLet me get Maroon food then weâll go outside.â Velvet frowned but nodded. Mad plated another sandwich and bowl of soup and set it in front of the youngest mafia member.Â
âIf Solana comes out here, tell him the last two sandwiches are for him and Diamonds. Just wait another twenty minutes or so before letting Diamonds eat.â Maroon nodded. Velvet followed it outside through the sliding glass doors in the kitchen, taking a bite of the sandwich.Â
Mad sat down on one of the outdoor chairs, the teen following suit.Â
âSo what the fuck is wrong with you?â Velvet began, âWhat did Rhyme do?âÂ
âHe killed Eliza.â Velvet groaned.Â
âThatâs what youâre upset about?â
âShe wanted me to do it, at first. I didnât. ButâŚI donât know. I feel like it was her plan the whole time?â Velvet took another bite of the sandwich.Â
âProbably was.â
âBut then why bring me? Did he justâŚâ Madâs voice broke slightly, âDid he just want to hurt me?â Velvetâs eyes widened as she looked at the droid. Mad looked away.
âSorry. I know emotions arenât really your thing. Um, what was I saying?â
âI really just wanted to know what you were pissed at Rhyme about. But you seem moreâŚhurt than angry?â Velvet took another bite, âI donât know. Did you run into any complications other than Eliza?âÂ
âJust her guards.â
âGot it.â The teen finished their sandwich and stood back up.
âWell, Iâve got mission planning to d-â
âCan I ask you an emotions question?â Mad blurted out. Velvet frowned.
âI mean, I guess. I feel like Iâm the worst person to give you an answer, though.â
âI just wanna know, have you ever been so upset at someone but you canât justâŚI donât know, hate them?â Mad paused, âLike, you feel like you really should hate them but you just canât?â Velvet was quiet for a minute or so. She seemed to be lost in thought as Madâs soul seemed to race. Its thoughts raced as the teen sighed.Â
âI guess.â Before Mad could ask more, the teen disappeared through the door.Â
Mad seemed to refuse to meet Rhymeâs eyes, causing a pit to form in her stomach. The Red Mafia had changed into their mission uniforms: Mad in their red shirt and black jacket, Velvet in their jumpsuit with the red x, Maroon in a long-sleeved red shirt with a pair of black pants, Solana in a pair of red cargo shorts and a black tank top, and Thorn in a simple black short sleeve with red pants. Rhyme felt very out of place in the all-black outfit Velvet had given him. It was a little big, but the two teens were close enough in size for it to work. The assassin had also handed her a black beanie and sunglasses, similar to what Solana had on his face.Â
âDid you get any of that, Diamonds?â Velvet asked, crossing her arms. Rhyme turned towards them from his current seat in the Umbrellaâs cockpit.Â
âDo you want an honest answer?â
âMihi deĹs.â Rhyme chuckled before standing.
âBefore I make Velvet say that all over again, I should probably tell you all my name.â Mad finally looked at her.
âDiamonds, are you sure?â it asked, âYou donât have to say anything you donât want to-â
âMad, shut up,â Thorn demanded, leaning forward in his seat. Rhyme laughed again, putting her hands in her pockets.Â
Keep joking. Ignore it.
âTrust me, strange robot, Iâm sure. But, has anyone got any guesses before I reveal all?â She added a wink for good measure. Solana laughed and raised his hand.
âItâs going to be something stupid, like Bert or something,â the elf said. Rhyme shook her head and pointed at Maroon.
âAny guesses, fellow rhymer?â Maroon smiled and thought for a moment.Â
âHmm, Harper?âÂ
âNope, although thatâs kinda cool.â Before Rhyme could even glance at Thorn, the teen shook their head.
âIâve got nothing, Iâve met you once.â Rhyme laughed again.
âFair enough. Well-â
âWait, Mad, whatâs your guess?â Solana asked, âI think you know Diamonds better than any of us.â Mad let out a little chuckle that caused the pit to subside slightly.Â
âI know Diamonds enough to already know his actual name.âÂ
âBoooooooo,â Thorn groaned, âVelvet, your turn.â The Red Mafia leader had been quietly standing behind Rhyme for the duration of the guessing game. She rolled her eyes.
âIâd guess, but thatâs kind of unfair considering I also know it.âÂ
âOf course you do,â Solana muttered, âDiamonds, I apologise for whatever spying Velvet did to figure that out.âÂ
âAll good, Solana. Anyways, drumroll please.â He gestured around the room, but everyone just stared at him. She stood up straight again.
âRhyme, my name is Rhyme.â Maroon, Thorn, and Solana stared at her.Â
âYouâre joking,â Thorn stated. Rhyme shook his head.
âNope. Ask Mad or Bolton.â Thorn glanced at Mad, who nodded.Â
âSo were you always good at rhyming, or did you learn it as a joke from your name?â Solana asked.Â
âBit of both. Hard to deny my amazing natural talent,â she flipped her hair as well. Maroon laughed and smiled at him.
âYour name really suits you, Rhyme.â Rhyme winked before turning around to look at Velvet.Â
âAlright, what were you saying about the mission, Bolton?â Velvet sighed.Â
âAs I was saying,â they began, gesturing to the large map displayed in the hologram in the centre of the room, âWeâre going to be entering from the East door. According to Zaeor, it should be less guarded. Weâll split up in groups of two: Mad and Thorn, Solana and me, and Maroon and Rhyme.â Rhyme attempted to hide the throb in her soul.
There goes that plan, he thought, God, itâs never gonna talk to me again.
âUnor recently visited this location to do âbusinessâ, so thereâs a chance he left some information behind. Me and Solana, aka group 1, will take the top two floors of the complex and search it. Mad and Thorn, group 2, will take the second floor, and group 3, Maroon and Rhyme, will take the ground level.â
âSo weâre just looking for any sign of Unor?â Rhyme asked before he shook his head, âRight, your whole thing is killing him. Forgot.â Velvet rolled her eyes.Â
âJust get in and get out. Search your floors as quickly as possible and stay together. Maroon, we donât have an extra set of comms to give Rhyme, so youâll have to communicate for both of you. If any of you see anything, radio in. Am I clear?â The group nodded, with Rhyme adding a âcrystalâ to the silence. Velvet sat back down in the captain's chair while Rhyme moved to sit next to Mad.
âHey, strange robot,â she said, smiling. Mad looked away from him and scooted to the left. Rhyme frowned, the pit in her stomach growing once again.
âSoâŚ.are you sure we can trust that Zaeor dude to take care of Wyatt? Heâs not gonna brainwash him or anything?â Mad sighed.
âNo. But we donât have any other choice.âÂ
âRight, âcourse.â Mad stood up and moved to talk to Velvet, leaving the thief alone in her seat.Â
The pit grew larger.
Maroon led the way down the hall, Rhyme following close behind. Mushrooms slightly damped their footsteps before retracting back into the floor.Â
âThereâs an admin office to the left,â Rhyme mumbled. Maroon nodded. They took a left and Rhyme kicked down the door. The room was slightly messy, with chairs out of place and papers strewn around the desk. Maroon smiled.Â
âJackpot,â Rhyme muttered. The thief jumped to the desk while Maroon took to the bookshelves. They were quiet for a while, the sound of paper rustling and books opening and closing surrounding them. Rhyme muttered something under her breath.
âWhat was that?â Maroon asked, turning towards him.Â
âNothing, just thinking out loud.â
âOkay.â
âActually, can I ask you a question?â he blurted out, âAbout Mad?â Maroon paused for a moment before nodding.Â
âLetâs say I were to, possibly, bring Mad with me on a mission to murder my foster mom.â Maroonâs eyes widened.
âOh.â The thief let out a nervous laugh.
âYeah. How would I go aboutâŚapologising?â Maroon set the book they were holding back on the shelf.Â
âDid youâŚmean to bring it along?âÂ
âYeah.â A frown formed on the younger teenâs face.Â
âWhy? Donât you kn-â
âOf course I know,â Rhyme interrupted, âI was the one they talked to every time they saw Velvet kill a new person. I was the one who understood.âÂ
âThen whyâd you bring them?â Rhyme looked at the floor, one of her hands forming a fist. A chill went down Maroonâs spine.
âI donât fucking know! My brain thought it would be easier if they were there. In case Eliza, you knowâŚâ Her other hand formed a fist and she quickly grabbed a file from the desk.
âBut now Iâve ruined my relationship with the one goddamn person Iâve loved in 5 fucking years!â He threw the folder on the ground. Maroon watched the papers fly all over the room. The folder landed with a small thud, some kind of words on the front.
âShit, sorry rhymer. I got carried away,â Rhyme mumbled.Â
âItâsâŚokay. Whatâs the folder say?â The thief glanced down at it and her eyes widened.Â
âHoly shit,â she muttered, picking up the scattered forms.
âWhat is it?â
âIt says âB.A.D.: Project Rapioâ. Help me pick up the papers.
Rapio. I seize.
Maroon quickly grabbed the papers around them and handed them to Rhyme. She scanned the pages while Maroon adjusted their earpiece.
âWhat is this language?â Rhyme asked. Maroon held their hand out so Rhyme handed the folder to them. They scanned the folder, their heartbeat racing.Â
âHeâs gonna attack the mansion.â They reached up to their earpiece.Â
âVelvet, we found something.â Her response was almost immediate.
âWhat is it?âÂ
âUnorâs planning an attack on the mansion. On the 9th of December.â Maroon counted in their head.
âŚnine, ten, eleven. Eleven days until the 9th.
âShit. Head back to the Umbrella, everyone.â Maroon took a deep breath.Â
âOkay, weâll be there,â they mumbled, turning to Rhyme,
Weâre meeting back at the Umbrella.â Maroon took a deep breath as Rhyme nodded.Â
âLetâs get going, then.â
âOh, and Rhyme.â The teen raised an eyebrow.
âYeah?âÂ
âTalk to Mad. Tell them what you told me.â Rhyme frowned and looked away.
âIt wonât even talk to me, though.â Maroon set a hand on her shoulder.
âIâll talk to them. Get them to talk to you. Okay?â The thief looked up at them and a small smile appeared on his face.
âThanks, fellow rhymer.â
âRhymers stick together,â Maroon said, smiling, âLetâs go to the others.â
âVelvet, would you quit it?â Solana asked, crossing his arms. Velvet paused her pacing for a moment to glare at them.
âNo.âÂ
âYouâre stressing everyone out.âÂ
âThat sucks, deal with it. Iâm thinking.âÂ
ââCourse.â Velvet flipped through the folder and resumed their pacing. She muttered Latin under her breath as she read.
âWhy are his plans mostly in Latin anyway?â Mad asked from the captainâs chair.Â
âHeâs really into ancient Rome and its culture,â Rhyme answered, âEliza tried to learn it to talk to him but failed miserably.â At the mention of Elizaâs name, Mad looked towards the floor. Rhyme stared at them for several seconds before sighing.Â
âThis is bad,â Velvet mumbled, âThis is very bad.â
âWhatâs it say?â Solana asked. Velvet looked up at him.Â
âHeâs found a way to break through the magic barriers and bought help from the UPS soldiers to stage a full-on assault.â
âAre we sure he didnât just plant that document?â Thorn asked, aer arms around Maroon, âI mean, why would he give the UPS a document in Latin? He mustâve planted it knowing we would be showing up.â
âBut what does he gain from that?â Maroon mumbled. Thorn looked down at them.
âFreaking us out? Getting us off our game?âÂ
âUs being off our game is the least of his concerns if he has two thousand soldiers,â Velvet interrupted. Solanaâs eyes widened.Â
âTwo thousand?â she breathed. Velvet nodded.Â
âFuck.â
âThorn is right about one thing, though. We have no way of knowing if the date or numbers in the plan are accurate,â Mad stated, âUnor couldâve planted that and lied.â
âSo youâre saying we could be attacked anytime from now to the 9th?â Maroon asked.Â
âThat and after as well. He might have given us a date earlier than the actual attack to lower our guard.â Velvet closed the folder and groaned loudly.Â
âOkay, weâll have to reinforce all the magic defences. Find different spells, evolve our current ones. Weâll get Zaeor to recast the location remixer and-âÂ
âHow about we save the plans for Zaeor?â Solana asked, patting the seat next to him, âWeâre almost at the mansion anyways.â
âIâm not sitting down, Solana-â The elf sighed and stood.Â
âAlright, hard way then.â She quickly held Velvetâs arms down and picked her up. They tried to squirm out of their grip to no avail. Laughter came from the other teens around the cockpit. Solana set them down in the seat and buckled them in. Velvet glared up at him.
âLet me out, mÄŤles,â she spat.Â
âNope.â Solana looked around the cockpit. Despite the laughter, the air was still tense. Mad wasnât even looking at them, instead completely focused on the GPS system. Maroon pressed up against Thorn, who hugged them tighter. Rhyme couldnât take his eyes off Mad, no matter how much the robot ignored him.Â
âEveryone buckle up,â Mad called out, âWeâre about to land.â Thorn gently let go of Maroon and the two of them returned to their proper seats. Rhyme plopped down next to Solana, giving them a slight smile.Â
âYou good, Dia- Rhyme?â Solana asked. The thief nodded. The Mahogany Mansion slowly came into view, the pizza box Solana left outside still sitting on the picnic table. He chuckled to himself. Next to them, Rhyme shivered.Â
âGod, I hate that,â she mumbled.Â
âHate what, landing?â Thorn asked. Rhyme shook his head.
âNo, the scanner thing. It just sends a thousand chills up and down my body and it freaks me out.âÂ
âScanner thing?â Maroon questioned. Mad also turned to look at the teen, causing her to straighten up.Â
âOh, you mean the magic profiler,â Velvet interrupted. All eyes looked towards her.
âThe what?â Mad asked.Â
âThe magic profiler. It just makes sure no one can enter that isnât with one of us.â Thorn rolled his eyes.
âYou need a better name for that.â
âThere is one, but itâs in Astarca.â
âIâm not even going to ask what Astarca is,â Rhyme muttered. The Umbrella landed softly on the red soil and Mad guided it towards the garage. Rhymeâs ship still sat outside, parked and powered off. The mafia and Rhyme flowed out of the ship and into the mansion. Zaeor and Wyatt were sitting in the living, the kid playing Mario Kart on the TV. Zaeor looked at them and raised an eyebrow.Â
âBack already?â He asked, smiling. Wyatt paused the game and stood up, embracing Mad. The droid picked him up and patted his head. Velvet threw the folder at him before crossing her arms. The god raised an eyebrow as he caught it.
âWhatâs this?â
âRead it. We found it at the UPS headquarters.â Zaeor scanned the pages for a minute or so before looking up at Velvet. He muttered something in a strange language that Solana couldnât understand. Velvet replied in the same language, anger underneath the words. Mad leaned towards Maroon.
âAre you getting anything from this?â they asked. Maroon shook their head.Â
âItâs not Latin or any fae language Iâm aware of. Thorn?âÂ
âIt sounds somewhat familiar but I have no clue.â Velvetâs hand formed a fist as Zaeor stood. He walked towards her, his voice low. Wyatt pushed closer to Mad.
âHe sounds scary,â he mumbled.Â
âDo you know what heâs saying, Wyatt?â Mad asked, looking down at the boy. He shook his head.Â
âFucking hell,â Velvet growled before returning back to the mysterious language. Solana raised a hand.
âHey, uh, Velvet? Maybe switch languages so we can understand what you're saying?â The assassin looked back at her but Zaeor quickly said something that caused them to turn back around. The argument went on for a minute or so more before Velvet threw their hands in the air. She turned on her heel and stormed out of the living room. Zaeor called out after her.
âIâm fucking leaving!â they shouted back in English, âIf youâre going to be completely unreasonable, Iâm done talking to you!â Solana watched her run up the stairs before turning back to Zaeor.
âWhat was that about?â Mad asked the god. Zaeor sighed and sat back down on the couch.Â
âSheâs beingâŚdifficult. And paranoid.â Solana frowned.
âAbout the attack?â The god nodded.Â
âI mean, itâs worth taking a look into,â Rhyme stated, crossing her arms, âYeah, it could be fake, but thereâs no harm in researching it more.â Zaeor sighed and looked over at the group.Â
âLet me make one thing abundantly clear,â he began coldly, âThe Mahogany Mansion is perfectly safe. No one can get in or out without permission so we have nothing to worry about. Regardless of if Unor is actually planning an assault, he will be unable to pull it off. There is nothing to worry about.â The room was silent for several moments after he finished as the group stared at him. Maroon grabbed onto Thornâs hand and took a deep breath while Mad held Wyatt close to it.
âCouldnât we just reinforce the defenses? Magical or otherwise?â Solana asked. Zaeor shook his head.
âThereâs no need. You all are completely safe.â Zaeor gestured towards the TV, plastering a smile on his face.
âNow, surely you all need time to unwind from your mission. Sit, letâs play.â
Something in Solanaâs brain told him that it wasnât a suggestion, so he sat.
hey everyone, fortis (@iamf0rtis) here.
i just started working on the finale of part 4, which is a two-parter that will start on december 23 and finish on the 30th. so i decided to hop on here and get sentimental about the red mafia for a min.
when we first came up with the original idea for the red mafia, it was a stupid bit. we had all shown up to homecoming one year with something red on and jokingly called ourselves the red mafia. the dance came and went but we took the bit further, as we do.
we created alternate personalities and storylines that we were going to "play" online, mainly on the tumblr we made. it wasnt until a week or so later when i was like "hey wait, i could write something with this". and so the red mafia loUre doc was born
the beginning of the end, in a way lol
the original idea with the doc was just cute little short stories that wouldnt have any like overarching lore. think a sitcom but with velvet, mad, and maroon.
oh yeah, the others were barely ideas at this point. the people who were supposed to play them had some idea but i hadnt been given character files until later, so they were cut from the initial bit. thats why the red mafia didnt start completely together and part 1 is spent collecting solana and thorn.
there was also another guy named krim, whose only lore was he was an anarchist punk who really just hates the government. yeah, suffice to say he was cut lol.
theres a lot of other funny things that were cut in the final character designs, but i want to save those for some posts after part 4 is over, which once again is december 30th, 2023. make sure you all are caught up, cause its gonna be a banger :)
i just wanna end this sappy ass post with a thank you. the red mafia has grown from a small bit me and my friends have to a 512 page, 162,000 word project that has taken over nearly every thought in my brain for the past two years. because oh yeah, the red mafias tumblrs 2nd birthday was in october and i missed it cause idk how to check my email lol. all of this couldnt have happened without the support from our tumblr followers and the near 700 people who have read the red mafia on wattpad. so yeah, go read the red mafia.
i think thats enough sappiness for today. ive got a finale to write
fortis, signing off

1 month after âThe Catalystâ
Velvet nearly impaled Madâs TV with a knife when they entered the kitchen. The robot quickly dodged and flicked on the light.
âJust me!â they whispered. Velvet stared at it before sighing.Â
âDamn it, Mad. What are you doing awake?â
âI could say the same for you.â The teen took a big drink of the energy drink sitting in front of them. Mad crossed their arms as she tossed it in the recycling bin.Â
âCouldnât sleep.â
âGo figures,â the droid mumbled, âWell, Iâm going to help Rhyme with something.â Velvet frowned.
âAt 5:30 in the morning?â Mad shrugged.Â
âSaid it was something to do with Eliza. Figured I might as well.âÂ
âHow long are you gonna be gone?âÂ
âNo idea. Why? Is something happening?âÂ
âMission this evening. Was gonna tell everyone when they woke up.â Madâs screen went blank.
âWhatâs the mission?âÂ
âInformation retrieval. Weâre breaking into a UPS building.â
âOf course,â Mad began, âIâll be back before then. When are we leaving?âÂ
âAfter dark.â
âYeah, everything will be fine.â Velvet narrowed their eyes at them before sighing.
âOkay, have fun or whatever.â A smile appeared on Madâs screen.Â
âAlright, see you later.â
âBye-â
âAnd no more energy drinks! Go to bed!â Velvet rolled their eyes but waved goodbye to the robot.Â
Looking back, Mad wished it had stayed.
The guilt began to form in Rhymeâs stomach as soon as he saw Mad walking out of the Umbrella, a smile on their TV. It waved at him, and he waved back. Daylight was just breaking around them, yellows and oranges piercing the black sky.Â
Just follow the plan, Rhyme thought to herself, They wonât even know.Â
âHey Rhyme!â Mad called out. Rhyme waved again. Mad mustâve picked up on Rhymeâs nervous demeanour because the next words out of their speakers were âAre you okay?â. Rhyme took a deep breath.
The plan, Rhyme.Â
âNot really,â the smile immediately disappeared, âI found out something disturbing this morning.â Mad stepped forward and placed a hand on her shoulder.
âWhat?â
âElizaâs adopted another kid. A little boy named Wyatt.â
â...Oh.âÂ
âYeah. Will you help me get him out of there?âÂ
âOf course. Whatâs the plan?â Rhyme smiled.
âThanks Mad. I knew I could count on you.â
Now onto phase 2.Â
âMy plan is to break into the house through the attic. Do you need anything from the Umbrella?â
âI donât think so. How long is it going to take?âÂ
âHopefully not long. Shall we go? Iâll fill you in on the way.â
Rhyme carefully opened the small hatch in between the roof tiles. The ship sat a couple dozen metres away in a small parking lot behind the estate. Mad watched as the teen slid down into the hole, their laser gun strapped to their back. She held herself up for a few seconds before landing silently on the tiled floor. He looked up at Mad and smirked.
âYou coming?â he whispered.Â
âI am not that graceful.â
âYouâll be fine. No one can hear up here anyway. I was just doing that to look cool.â Mad chuckled and landed next to her.
âWell, you succeeded. Where now?â The room was an ugly shade of white, with several dolls dressed as angels lining the walls. Rhyme looked at each of them with disgust before gesturing to a door on the other side.Â
âThere. If weâre lucky, heâs in my old room. Or one of the dozens of other kids' bedrooms Eliza has.âÂ
âWhyâs she so obsessed with kids?â Rhyme stifled a laugh.
âDonât say it like that, you make her sound like a pedophile.â Mad shrugged.
âHey, I donât know.â Rhyme bit their lip to keep from laughing.Â
âNo, sheâs just obsessed with the âperfect religious familyâ. Living in the eyes of God or whatever.â Rhyme walked over to the door and held it open for Mad.
âAfter you.â The duo made their way down the hallway. As they walked, Mad could hear the muffled sobs of a child. They grew louder, eventually culminating in front of a white door. A sign hung on the door, reading âWyattâ in fancy cursive letters. Rhyme scoffed.Â
âShe did put him in my room,â he muttered, âHuh. Sheâs always kept it empty since I ran away.â Mad turned to her.Â
âItâs almost like itâs a-â
âTrap,â Rhyme finished. She turned to it.
âAre you still-â
âYes. How old is he?â
âFive.â Mad was quiet before twisting the doorknob. It was pure white with light baby blue curtains covering a small window. A little boy sat on the bed, knees pulled to his chest. He had bright green eyes and platinum blonde hair that was cut short. He quickly turned away from the door and scooted towards the wall, pulling on the sleeves of his white polo. He was shaking.
âIâm sorry, Mrs. Gracy!â He shouted, âI didnât mean to get the shirt dirty, I wonât do it again!â Rhyme frowned.
âI see sheâs no better parent now,â he mumbled. Mad stepped forward, allowing a smile to take over its screen.Â
âMy nameâs Mad. Iâm not going to hurt you.â The boyâs shaking slowed and he glanced behind him.Â
âM-Mad?â The droid sat down on the bed next to him.
âYep. Iâm here with my friend Diamonds-â
âRhyme,â Rhyme corrected. Mad looked at him.
âRight, Rhyme. Weâre here to get you out of here.â Wyatt looked up at them.
âWhat?âÂ
âMrs. Gracy hasnât been very nice to you, has she?â Rhyme asked, crossing her arms. Wyatt paused for a moment before shaking his head.
âBut- she saved me from the orphanage, so I need to-â
âItâs not your fault,â Mad interrupted, âSheâsâŚhm. Sheâs not a good person. I know a place where you will be happy and the people will be nice to you. Do you want to go?â Wyatt looked away as Mad held a hand out to him.
âM-Mrs. Gracy would be mad-â
âYou wonât have to see her again,â Rhyme added, âSheâll be out of your life for good.â Wyatt turned to the thief.Â
â...she wonât hit me anymore?â Mad felt anger grow inside their soul.Â
âNo. Youâll be safe.â The boy once again looked up at Mad and their outstretched hand. After a few more seconds of hesitation, he took it. Mad scooped him up and stood.
âAre you hurt anywhere?â Mad asked.
âJ-just my arm. Thereâs purple skin.â He pointed at his right shoulder. Rhyme raised an eyebrow.Â
âPurple-skin?â
âBruise, Iâm assuming,â Mad replied, âCan I take a look?â Wyatt nodded. Mad rolled the sleeve up. A large bruise was forming, dark and purple. Madâs screen turned off, startling the 5-year-old.
âYou okay, Mad?â Rhyme asked, placing a hand on its shoulder.
âIâm fine. Letâs get out of here.â They rolled the sleeve back down. Rhyme nodded and turned around, letting Mad and Wyatt go in front of him. As soon as they stepped out of the door a loud alarm began to sound. Rhyme and Wyatt jumped slightly and the thief quickly pulled out her gun. Wyatt stared at the weapon for several seconds before burying his face against Madâs shoulder.Â
âWhatâs going on?â it asked.Â
âThey must have some kind of tracker on him. Weâre gonna have company.â Mad slid their laser gun into their other hand and held it up. Shouting echoed from the stairwell a metre or so in front of them. A head popped up and Rhyme quickly shot a bullet into his shoulder. The man tumbled down the stairs, seemingly taking a few other guards with him. Rhyme grabbed Madâs wrist and sprinted in the opposite direction.
âWeâll take the back stairs!â He began as a bullet flew by his head, âThereâs an exit down there.â She pulled them down the stairs and towards a glass door at the end of a hallway. Three guards turned around a corner and stood in front of it, weapons raised at the trio. Mad fired a few shots at them before scanning the area.Â
There was one large door about halfway down the hallway that was pure white with gold trim around the edges. Paintings hung on either side, some depicting forests with bright white trees and some of a man with a crown of thorns on his head. One of Rhymeâs bullets collided with a guardâs knee and Mad grabbed him.Â
âI have a plan, follow me!â Mad pulled her and kicked open the door in the hallway.
âMad, wait-â The robot pushed her in and quickly slammed the door behind them. They expected banging, maybe even shots through the door, but there was only silence. Rhyme was panting next to them and Wyatt choked back a sob.
âWhat are you doing?â
Rhyme swung around and fired a shot that embedded itself in the wall just a few centimetres away from Elizaâs head. She sat at her desk with a disgusted look on her face.Â
âElizaâŚâ Rhyme muttered. Mad turned around as well, their screen powered off. The woman sighed and stood.
âThank you, Rhyme, for bringing me my son-â
âHeâs not your son,â Mad interrupted. Eliza glared at it.Â
âLegally-â
âLegally doesnât mean shit,â Rhyme spat.Â
âLegally, youâre my child too, Rhyme.âÂ
âExactly. Doesnât mean shit.â Eliza sighed and stood from her desk.Â
âListen, robotâŚwhat was your name again?â
âDonât-â Rhyme started, but Mad told her. A fake, vicious smile took over her face.Â
âMad. I have some information that could be quite useful-â Rhyme fired a shot next to Elizaâs head and she stepped to the side.Â
âIgnore her, Mad. Sheâs talking crazy.â A loud thud came from the door and Mad quickly moved to stand in front of it. The guards shouted from the other side but the robot pressed its body against the wood. Eliza shook her head before reaching into a drawer on her desk. She quickly raised her own gun at Rhyme.
âRhyme, dear. You know your robot wonât be able to hold that door for long. Why donât you tell it to bring my child to me and no one gets hurt?âÂ
âThatâs not happening,â Mad interrupted. Eliza rolled her eyes.
âWould you be quiet, robot?â Rhymeâs next shot hit her square in her left shoulder, sending her to the ground. She let out a scream and the thuds on the door grew louder.Â
âDonât talk to Mad like that,â he ordered. Eliza pressed a hand against her wound and sat up. Rhyme kicked her back to the ground. The woman held the gun in her right hand and fired a shot that hit Rhyme in the knee. The teen backed up a metre or so.
âRhyme!â Mad called out. She looked back at them and shook her head.
âIâm fine, keep holding the-â Another shot hit Rhyme in his lower abdomen. Eliza laughed maniacally as she stood and kicked the thiefâs weapon away. She placed a high heel on Rhymeâs gunshot wound, digging the end into it. Rhyme winced in pain.
âGet off her, Eliza!â Mad called out. She looked at it.
âWhat are you going to do about it, robot? Shoot me with your childrenâs laser?â Mad did exactly that, raising their laser gun and firing it straight into her chest. It sent her flying into a bookshelf, knocking dozens of various novels to the ground. Rhyme jumped to his feet and glared down at Eliza.
âNow kill her.â Mad froze.
â...What?â
âKill her. She fucking deserves it.â Rhyme looked back at it. He had a wicked grin on his face and a determined look in his eyes.Â
â...I canât.â Eliza struggled to get back to her feet across the room. The door behind Mad fell forward, the shouting even louder now. Mad jumped out of the way as dozens of Elizaâs guards streamed through the doorframe. They focused their aim on the guards, sending them flying around the room. Rhyme stood next to Eliza, scanning the room for her own gun and keeping the woman on the floor.Â
After Madâs laser had hit nearly two dozen of Elizaâs men, Rhyme laughed. It wasnât her normal laugh, the one that sent warm feelings up and down Madâs soul. This one was dark and cold.
âBye bitch,â Mad heard Rhyme mutter. The robot turned around just in time to see the teenage thief blow a hole in Elizaâs skull.Â
Rhyme only stared at Eliza for a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. A wave of relief washed over her as the blood spilled onto the white carpet. He eventually snapped back to reality and spun around, landing bullets in most of the guards around. Mad stood frozen on the other side, staring at Elizaâs corpse. Rhyme shook away the guilt forming in her stomach and sprinted over. A few tears were dripping from Wyattâs eyes when he gripped the robotâs wrist.
âMad, weâve got to go.â A few shots whizzed by and Rhyme quickly took out their source. Mad slid their laser gun onto its back and held onto Wyatt tightly.Â
Why isnât he happy? Elizaâs dead. The thief pulled his friends through the door and down the hall towards the formerly blocked exit door. She kicked it open as footsteps echoed behind them. They ran until they reached Rhymeâs ship again, the door opening as she approached.Â
âWeâll be safe once we get on the ship,â Rhyme told Mad, but the robot didnât reply. Once the door was safely locked and they were off the ground, Wyatt began to sob. Mad pressed the small child against them and slowly rubbed circles on his back. Rhyme looked away and winced as the pain spiked in his stomach.Â
It only took a few minutes for Wyatt to slip into sleep, leaving Mad and Rhyme alone on the ship. Mad layed him down on the captainâs chair and joined her at the console. They were quiet for a moment.
â...Are you okay?â it mumbled. Rhyme shrugged.
âYeah.âÂ
âWhere are you going?â He gestured to the GPS.
âBack to my place to get you back to the Umbrella.â
âAnd what about Wyatt?â The teen blinked a few times.
âIâŚdidnât get that far in my plan.â Mad sighed and looked back at the five-year-old.Â
âLetâs all go to the mansion, then.â Rhyme frowned.
âDonât you want the Umbrella back?â
âWe can get it later,â Mad replied, crossing their arms. Rhyme frowned.
âAre youâŚmad at me?â She asked. The droid looked into the star-ridden sky and sighed.Â
âI just need some time to myself, Rhyme.â The thief stared at them for several seconds before sighing as well.Â
Johnny leads the teens through the area, safely reaching the stairwell to the catalyst before being ambushed by Darlington. Will Mad and Solana be able to reach them in time, or will they be lost to their minds?

Immediately after "The Game"
Solanaâs bat collided with Darlingtonâs stomach again, sending the boy flying down the hallway. He let out a laugh before glancing back at Mad, whose screen was blank.Â
âYou okay, Mad?â the elf asked, lowering the weapon.
âYeah, Iâm fine,â it replied, âMostly, at least.âÂ
âIs something going on?â
âIâve got a bad feeling about this place,â Mad said, causing Solana to chuckle.
âCursed places will do that.â
âWell, yeah. ButâŚI donât know. Weâre sure Zaeor gave Maroon this game, right?â Solana frowned.
âAs sure as we can be, I guess.â Mad crossed their arms and looked up at the grey ceiling.
âWhy would Zaeor give Maroon a cursed video game? Surely he knew about the curse, right?â
âMaybe he didnât,â Solana replied, âI donât think he would intentionally give it to Maroon.â
âMaybeâŚâ The elf leaned against a wall.
âOr maybe he needs to get rid of this curse and wants us to do it.âÂ
âBut why not tell us so weâre prepared?â Solana shrugged.
âI donât know, Iâm not a god. Iâve got no idea what heâs thinking.â
âRightâŚâ Mad mumbled, âWait, whereâs Darlington? Shouldnât he be back by now?â Solana frowned and pushed herself off the wall.
âYeah, youâre right. Where is he?â They looked down the hallway, but no one was coming back.Â
âUm- excuse me-â Mad quickly turned around, barely managing to step out of the way before Solana swung their bat at the boy behind them. He quickly stepped back but was hit by the elfâs second swing.Â
âNice try, Darlington,â they muttered, raising the weapon again, âReady to get pummelled again?â
âW-wait! Iâm not who you think I am!â Mad put an arm out in front of Solana.
âWho are you then?âÂ
âIâm Johnny Darlington, but n-not the one you were fighting! Thatâs an evil version of me, I swear!â A smile appeared on Madâs screen.
âI believe you. What are you doing here, then?â The boy took a deep breath.
âYour friends. I was h-helping them get to the catalyst andâŚwell. Theyâre in danger.â
When Velvet, Maroon, Thorn, and Johnny rematerialized, the surroundings had morphed once again. Velvet looked around at the lines of desks and chairs, computers sitting on top of each of them. The yellow wallpaper was back, although it was partially covered by various frames. Instead of holding paintings, however, they were all white paper.Â
Next to them, Thorn lurched forward. Velvet groaned and quickly grabbed a trash bin. They handed it to him, and he promptly turned around and threw up into the bag. Maroon stepped away from aer slightly.
âThorn, are you okay?â They didnât respond.
âTeleporting makes someâŚweaker people lose control of their stomachs,â Velvet said, smirking. Thorn flipped them off. Maroon placed a hand on their shoulder. Thorn looked up at them and smiled weakly before returning to the trash can and vomiting again.Â
âWhere are we, Darlington?â Velvet asked, crossing her arms.Â
âThis is as close to the catalyst as I can take you,â he began, âMy magic doesnât work any closer.â
âOf course,â the teen muttered.Â
âI donât remember this level from the trailer. What-â
âItâs not a level. This is what goes on behind the scenes. Itâs where all the mini-games and puzzles are monitored.â Thorn set the trashcan on the ground and grabbed a tissue off a desk.Â
âSo which way?â Velvet began. Darlington led her to an exit door which led to a concrete stairwell. Maroon helped Thorn to follow them as Velvet looked up and down.Â
âIf my info is right, at the top of the building is where the catalyst is.â Thorn looked up at the dozens of stairwells and groaned.Â
âAll the way up?â
âAll the way up.â
âFuck,â he breathed. Velvet chuckled before starting up the stairs. The others followed behind, Thorn still grumbling behind her. The sound of printers rumbling came from the closed doors along the stairwell. Voices came through quietly as well, immediately putting the assassin on edge.
âAre there other people here?â They demanded.
âJ-just NPCs. nothing to worry about.â Velvet narrowed their eyes.
âMhmâŚsure.â
âYouâre being paranoid, Velvie,â Thorn called out. The assassin flipped him off as the voices suddenly stopped. Velvet froze at the top of the steps. There were only two more flights to the top but Darlington choked back a sob.Â
âHeâs here,â he breathed, âIâm so sorry.â Velvet raised two of her throwing knives.Â
âStay behind me. Iâll take care of it.â They glanced back at their teammates but they were gone. The corridor was completely empty as a laugh echoed up and down the stairwell. Velvet gripped the throwing knives tighter and sprinted forward. Footsteps reverberated behind them but they quickly kicked the door open before slamming it closed. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.Â
A cold breeze hit her back, causing her to turn about. Their throwing knives had disappeared, along with the red zip-up and scars down their arms. A black, short-sleeve dress took its place and fell just below her knees. They stood in front of a large brown door, dozens of stickers scattered on it. In the middle was some kind of word: C-A-R-
âWhat the fuck,â the teen breathed. Their heart skipped a beat as they spun around. The marble walls, the dark brown doors, the towering glass window behind her-
âFuck- How-â She turned back to the door. A rainbow was peeling off now, and an odour wafted towards them from underneath. They clenched their fists.Â
âNo. Iâm not doing this. Whatever youâre trying to do, Darlington, itâs not happening!â Another laugh, followed by the sound of a gun loading right behind her head.
âOpen the door, dÄvotiĹ,â Unorâs voice whispered, âYour surprise is behind it.â Velvet could still hear the smirk in his wicked voice. They took a deep breath and stepped forward.
Itâs not real, itâs not real- they repeated as they turned the knob. The door slowly pushed open and the assassin shut her eyes.
âOpen your eyes, Velvet,â Unorâs voice muttered again, âLook at him. You did this, you know.â The stench was overwhelming, to the point where Velvet knew exactly what was in front of them. She slowly opened her eyes before slamming them closed.Â
Maroon spun around as a chill went down their spine. Thornâs warm hand was long gone along with Velvet and Johnny in front of them. The teen took a deep breath and raised their hands.Â
âWhere are you?â They called out. A laugh came from behind them.Â
âRight behind you, Margaret.â The dull grey walls of the stairwell seemed to melt away into brown and white and various seats materialised on either side of them. A large white cross hung on the wall in front of them with several young children sitting in pews. The rest of the seats were empty and a man dressed in a black robe stood at the front of them. All eyes turned towards Maroon as someone shoved them to the ground.Â
âMargaret. How lovely of you to finally join us,â the man in the robe said. Maroon froze.
âShe was playing around in the forest again, Father,â the person behind them stated coldly, âSleeping under a tree, no less.â Maroon could feel tears running down their face as they took a deep breath. The robed man walked towards them. Maroon heard their own voice tell him to stop, but he didnât listen. Every step that he took brought a familiar feeling into them. Their hands grew cold as the robed man slapped them across the face.Â
Maroon took another deep breath before mushrooms exploded around the church hall. They grew through the wooden floor and wrapped around the robed manâs legs. His screams pierced Maroonâs ears and were shortly followed by the high-pitched screeches of the children. The adults shouted at them but their words reached deaf ears. The robed man now lay dead on the floor, mushrooms growing out of his ears. His head exploded, his brain now turned into tiny pink fungi. Several other adults followed suit. Maroon closed their eyes as the ground shook, the walls soon crushing the remaining living humans in front of them.Â
âMaroon!â Thorn shouted, gripping the knife so hard his knuckles were turning white. When the laugh echoed, he quickly slashed behind him. The area rapidly changed around aer, morphing into grey stone walls. Paintings hung up on either side of it but they were drowned out by various vines in front of them.Â
A red slash hung in the air where Thornâs knife had sliced. A silhouette began to form around it before it solidified. Thorn stared in horror as his red-haired motherâs body slammed into the ground. The knife, blood dripping from it, fell out of its hands.Â
âNo-â he whispered, âNo, itâs not real. Itâs not-â His mother let out a loud scream, forcing the prince to cover aer ears. The word ânoâ kept dripping out of his mouth as the queen continued to scream and writhe on the floor. Footsteps thumped down the hall and the door behind him flew open.Â
âLove!â The king shouted. He stopped in the doorway as Thorn slowly turned towards him. His sword was drawn, just as it was.
âThornâŚâ he breathed, âSon, what happened?âÂ
âTheyâŚtheyâŚâ the queenâs voice faded out. The king looked at Thorn and his eyes fell to the bloodied knife at aer feet.Â
âThornâŚâ He whispered, âWhat have you done?â
âI didnât- I didnât mean-â
âYou âdidnât mean itâ?â the kingâs voice grew louder and Thorn quickly closed his eyes. It wrapped itself in its arms and took a deep breath. Â
âThorn, look at me!â The king demanded. Tears began to form in the princeâs eyes as he breathed again.Â
It'sâŚnot real, they thought, Maybe if I justâŚdo itâŚeverything will go back to normal.
âThorn!â The king shouted again. They felt his rough, calloused hands through the thin sleep tunic they had on. He slowly opened his eyes and looked up at the king. A few tears ran down his face as he shouted, demanding to know what happened. Thorn shrugged the kingâs hands off and picked up the knife.
The image froze right as they dug the knife into his stomach.
Solana felt a little nauseous after the âgoodâ Johnny Darlington teleported them. She looked over at Mad, whose screen was still blank. The robot tried to look around but Johnny quickly grabbed their arm and pulled them across what seemed to be an old office.Â
âTheyâre this way!â he called out, âHe used his magic on them-â He opened the stairwell door and sprinted up them. Solana had to sprint to keep up with the surprisingly agile boy. As they climbed, laughter began to echo down. The trio stopped on a landing, Solana pulling Mad behind him and raising his bat.Â
âTheyâreâŚtheyâre a few more flights up,â Johnny mumbled. The âbadâ Darlington floated down, still laughing. The two of them looked almost identical, except for Darlingtonâs pitch-black outfit compared to Johnnyâs jeans and a t-shirt.Â
âAt least we can tell them apart well enough,â Solana mumbled.
âThatâs what youâre focusing on?â Mad replied. The elf shrugged.
âJust glad we wonât have a switcheroo situation.â They stepped forward and swung the bat at the floating middle-schooler, but he just floated upward. Solana watched him reach his hand out as it glowed a light lilac. The room suddenly grew dark and Darlington disappeared from view.Â
Solana was sitting down all of a sudden, the inside of a small ship surrounding them. A small window was in front of her, a younger Nolan on the other side. A chill shot up their spine.Â
âNo,â they breathed.
âSolana!â Madâs voice pierced the ship, the walls rippling. Solana turned to where she thought the noise had come from.
âMad?â The ship snapped back to the grey walls of the stairwell. The elf shot up, panting. Darlington was groaning on the floor down a level while Johnny stood in front, facing him down. Mad was to her left, taking her pulse.Â
âWhat happened?âÂ
âHe tried to trap you in your worst memories,â Johnny said through gritted teeth, âLike he did with the kids. Itâs a twisted version of my magic.â Solana jumped to their feet.Â
âHowâd it stop?â
âThat was, uh, me,â Mad mumbled. It sheepishly raised Solanaâs bat and handed it to them. Solana smiled and turned back to Darlington, who was once again getting to his feet.
âLetâs do this, then,â she began, âMaybe if we pummel him enough heâll let them go.â
âMaroon!â Their eyes shot open. The ruins of the orphanage were covered in green plants now, and the dust had settled. Their mushrooms had receded into a small patch at their feet, still growing slowly.
âW-whoâs there?â Boots hit the grass behind them and Maroon turned around. Velvet walked towards them in their mission uniform, hair short once again. âMaroon, wake up!â They kept walking towards them, but their mouth didnât move.
âVelvet?â
The prince looked around at the frozen image. Their dadâs blood floated, the smell of iron in the air. His momâs screaming had stopped but his heart kept beating hard.
âMom, Dad?â it called out. No response. Thorn let out a relieved breath. Warm arms wrapped around aer, causing aer to jump slightly. A familiar smell slammed into their nose.
â...Maroon?â
âThorn!â
Velvet felt tears run down her cheeks as Unor held her eyelids open. His laugh seemed to shake the ground. The red blood seeped towards her, forming a pool at her feet. Bright emerald green eyes stared up at the ceiling, blood splattered on his chin. The bullet was still buried in his heart underneath the pale, ripped skin.
Her heartbeat thumped as she kept staring and Unor kept laughing. Quiet shouts came from behind them, followed by a loud thud. Velvetâs eyes widened and she quickly spun around. Unor didnât resist, his arms frozen up where he was holding her. His laugh continued but his mouth didnât move.Â
âWhat the fuck?â the assassin muttered. A high-pitch scream came from what seemed to be below the floorboards.
âDarlington,â she growled. They blinked before they were back in the stairwell, lying on the floor. The shouts were louder, and she made out Solanaâs voice calling out to Mad. Velvet shot up and ran to the railing. Below, Solana dodged a knife thrown by Darlington, not the one from earlier, and Mad caught it mid-air. The other Darlington took the knife from the droid and threw it to Solana, who then chucked it back.Â
âMad, Solana!â Velvet shouted. The trio looked up and Solanaâs eyes widened.Â
âVelvet!â Solana replied, âYou okay?âÂ
âIâm fine! Whatâs going on?âÂ
âEvil Darlington had you all trapped in a spell,â Mad said, âWeâre distracting him now. See if you can wake Thorn and Maroon up!â Velvet groaned but pushed herself away from the railing and sprinted down the steps. Maroon and Thorn were unconscious two floors down. The teen took a deep breath before kneeling down next to Maroon.Â
âMaroon!â they called out, âMaroon, wake up!â A few seconds passed and Velvet lightly shook them.Â
âVelvet?â Maroonâs eyes slowly opened and scanned the room. Eventually, they locked on Velvet and they shot up, pulling her into a hug. She attempted to squirm out of their grip at first but stopped when a small tear hit her jacket sleeve.Â
âI- I-â Velvet sighed and quickly propped them up, pointing at Thorn.
âGo wake Thorn up. Iâm going to destroy the catalyst.âÂ
âVelvet-â The assassin put her hands on Maroonâs shoulder.
âCome on, Maroon.â They were quiet for a second before nodding. Velvet stood up and leaned over the railing. Darlington slammed into a wall as Solana laughed. Her heartbeat was still racing and her breathing was shallow.Â
âTheyâre fine,â Velvet mumbled, âGet it together, Velvet.â She sprinted up the stairs again. A chill went down their spine as they opened the door, but they let out a relieved breath when the door simply opened to a dark room. In the centre was a pedestal with a floating green disc above it. A light green glow emitted from it, illuminating the symbols etched onto the floor. Velvet kneeled down and ran her hand over them.
âHm.â Velvet grabbed another throwing knife and rolled up their jacket sleeve. They quickly etched a rough sketch into the top layer of their skin before standing.
Iâll ask Zaeor later, Velvet thought. She quickly grabbed the disc and snapped it in half. The green light disappeared as the assassin let out a sigh of relief. Velvet turned around and stuffed the knife back in her pouch, pulling her sleeve down. Maroon had their arms wrapped around Thorn, Mad now hovering over them. Solana had a wooden bat and stood next to the âgoodâ Darlington, who looked up at her when she approached.
âThank you, Velvet,â he began, causing the rest of the mafia to turn towards them, âI donât know how much longer we couldâve held out.â
âThatâs it.â The teen narrowed her eyes but handed him the snapped disc. He looked down at the pieces before chuckling.
âMy own game. How ironic.âÂ
âAre you good, Velvet?â Solana asked. The teen raised an eyebrow.
âFine. Why?âÂ
âDarlington just trapped you in your worst memories and youâre âfineâ?âÂ
âOh, thatâs what his powers were. Makes sense.â A question mark appeared on Madâs face.Â
âDid youâŚnot-â
âI did. But I donât want to fucking talk about it,â Velvet interrupted, âJust take us home, Darlington.â Mad didnât push it further, but Solana gave her a look. Velvet simply gestured to the beaded red bracelet on her left wrist and the elf nodded. Darlington took Solanaâs right and Velvetâs left hands before smiling down at Thorn and Maroon.
âAre you two ready?â Thorn took a deep breath and stood, helping Maroon up. Maroon grabbed Velvetâs other hand and Thornâs. Mad grabbed the remaining hands, completing the circle. Darlington sighed and his hands glowed a light blue.
A morning video game session goes sour when the video game Maroon got turns out to be cursed. Now, the team is separated inside of it with no way home. Will they be able to find each other, or will they be stuck there forever?

2 weeks after âThe Princeâ
Maroon pushed Thorn down onto the couch in between Mad and Solana. Ae looked up at aer friend with a confused look, adjusting the light pink sweater ae were borrowing from Maroon.
âMaroon, whatâs going on?â Solana chuckled.
âThey didnât fill you in?â Thorn shook his head.
âMaroon recently got a new video game from Zaeor,â Mad began, crossing one of their legs over the other, âThey didnât tell us what it is, but they want all of us to play it together.â The older teen smirked.Â
âAlright, a video game challenge, then. Youâre on, Mar-Mar.â Maroon smiled at their friend.
âWeâre just waiting on Velvet.â Madâs screen displayed a question mark, drawing the younger teenâs attention towards it.
âMaroon, do you remember what happened last time you tried to get Velvet to play video games?â Maroon nodded but crossed their arms.
âYes, but this time itâll be different. Itâs not rainbow road levels of difficulty, so-â
âI hope I didnât just hear what I think I just heard.â Maroon quickly turned to the doorway of the living room, where Velvet now stood. Her red zip-up covered most of the skull-patterned tank top she was wearing underneath it. The younger teen shook their head.
âWeâre not playing Mario Kart, I promise.â
âGood, âcause I was going to walk away.â
âPlease donât, itâll be fun!â Velvet glanced at their teammates lined up on the couch. Solana was still in their pyjama pants and tank top, their hair tied up in a messy bun. He looked like he had just been dragged out of bed by a certain excited teenager. Mad was in their blue jean jacket paired with a grey shirt and white skirt, much more put together than the elf next to it.Â
âAndâŚwhat exactly are we playing again?â they asked, crossing their arms. Maroon smiled and quickly disappeared into the kitchen. Velvet raised an eyebrow. Solana let out a quiet chuckle and scooted closer to Thorn.
âCome on, take a seat Velvie.â She rolled her eyes but obliged. When Maroon emerged from the kitchen, they were gripping a video game box in their hands and blocking the label.
âWhere were you hiding that?â Mad questioned, âI didnât see it when I was making breakfast.â Maroon shrugged and took the disc out of the box. Velvet leaned forward as they placed the box upside down.
âWhatâs with all the secrecy, Mar-Mar?â Thorn called out.
âItâs a surprise.â
âWell, yeah, but weâre gonna see it in a few seconds anyways.â Maroon scooped the five controllers in their arms, returning to the couch and handing them out one by one.Â
âItâs more fun this way.â Thorn laughed.
âAlright, whatever you say.âÂ
âThis better not be something stupid,â Velvet muttered, âI have things I could be doing.âÂ
âLike what, drama queen?â Solana joked, holding down his controllerâs power button. Velvet glared at them.Â
âI am not.â Maroon plopped down on the couch in between Thorn and Mad, remote in hand. They navigated through the various menus until they clicked on a rainbow-coloured icon. After a few seconds of blackness, a loud whirring sound came from the TV.Â
âIs thatâŚa part of the game?â Solana asked, turning to Maroon. The teen stared at the screen before shaking their head. Mad began to stand, but a loud laugh stopped them in their tracks. Before anyone could move, a bright light enveloped the room.Â
Thorn instinctively closed its eyes until it felt the couch disappear from underneath it. Their back slammed onto some kind of floor, knocking the wind out of them. Ae gasped for air for a few moments until ae slowly sat up and forced aer eyes open.
Gone was the familiar red of the Mahogany Mansionâs living room, now replaced with ugly yellow wallpaper covered in grey flowers. The air was stale, smelling of mold and dirt. A hallway stretched in front of them, a few more coming off of it as well. He quickly jumped to his feet.
âGuys? Anyone there?â it called out. A loud thud came from down the hallway, followed by a loud groan.
âFucking hell,â Thorn heard Velvet yell. The older teen took off down the hallway, turning down one of the offshoots to find her slowly sitting up on the ground. They jumped a little when Thorn arrived.
âShit- Where are we?â they asked, standing.Â
âNo idea, I figured youâd know.âÂ
âWell, I donât. Have you seen the others?â He shook his head, causing Velvet to groan again.Â
âPerfect, just perfect,â they muttered, âExactly how I wanted to spend my Friday morning. Thanks, Maroon!â
âW-who said that?â A voice called out. Thorn glanced at Velvet.
âMaroon?â
âMaroon.â The duo ran back into the hallway. Velvet pulled a small throwing knife out of a small pouch attached to her belt. Thorn stared at them.Â
âSince when did you have that?â Velvet rolled her eyes.
âSince I woke up, frĹŤx. You just donât pay attention.â Ahead of them, Maroonâs head popped out from behind a wall.Â
âVelvet, Thorn!â They slowed in front of them, Thorn pulling them into a hug.
âYou okay, mushroom?âÂ
âY-yeah.â
âWhat the hell have you gotten us into, Maroon?â Velvet demanded, crossing her arms. Maroon looked towards the ground.
âI-I didnât know this would happen, I thought we were all just going to have fun playing the new Johnny Darlington game and-â The assassin cut them off with a loud groan.
âReally? Johnny Darlington game?â
âY-yeah I thought itâd be f-fun.âÂ
âSo, does that mean weâre in the game?â Thorn asked, gesturing around them, âBecause this doesnât look very Johnny Darlington-core to me.â Velvet narrowed their eyes at him.
âIt doesnât look very what?â
âJohnny Darlington-core.â
âWhat does that even mean?â
âIt means itâs not very Johnny Darlington-core.â She groaned again before turning back to Maroon.Â
âWhatâs supposed to happen in the game?â Maroon looked at them.
âItâs supposed to be a team game where you work together to help Johnny Darlington escape a maze. Although, I donât think itâs supposed to look like this.â
âBecause itâs not Johnny Darlington-core.â
âThorn, I am going to throw you into a reactor core if you donât shut the fuck up.â Maroon laughed nervously, carefully stepping in between their friends.Â
âAnyways-â they began, looking between the two of them, âShouldnât we find Mad and Solana?â Velvetâs eyes widened.Â
âFuck, right. Solana! Mad!â The group went silent for several seconds but no other noise came from inside the hallways. Maroon turned to Velvet.
âW-where are they?âÂ
Mad looked around the small room Solana and them were standing in. They glanced at the elf.
âDid you hear something?â it asked. Solana shook her head.
âNo, did you?âÂ
âI thought I did, but Iâm probably just hearing things.â The elf raised an eyebrow.Â
âCan you even hear things that arenât real? That feels counterintuitive.â Mad shrugged.
âI donât think it was in my original programming, so it must be a soul thing.â
âHuh, interestingâŚâ A smile appeared on their screen.
âAnyways, enough about me,â it began, âWe should find Maroon, Thorn, and Velvet.â Solana nodded before stifling a laugh. Madâs screen flipped to a question mark.
âWhat?â
âPfft- just, weâre off to hunt down the angsty teens.â Mad chuckled.Â
âTrue, although Iâm not sure Iâd call Maroon and Thorn âangstyâ.â
âReally? Theyâre still pretty angsty, just in a different way than Velvet is.â
âI guessâŚwait. If theyâre the âangsty teensâ, whatâre we?â Solana paused for a minute.
âWell, Iâm obviously the cool, criminal uncle,â she started, earning a chuckle from the droid, âAnd youâŚare the very tired dad of the group.â Madâs question mark flickered slightly. Solana let out a laugh.
âOr mom. Whichever you prefer.â
âW-why me?â The elf leaned up against one of the yellow-print walls.Â
âI mean, you are the one who makes sure we all donât kill each other.â They laughed again as Madâs screen went blank before they stood up fully again.Â
âAny luck with calling any of them?â Mad stared at him for a second before shaking their TV.Â
âI imagine some kind of magic is involved. I think we got teleported into the game,â it said, a frown appearing on the screen, âButâŚwhy would ZaeorâŚâ Solana raised an eyebrow.Â
âWhy would he what?âÂ
âNothing, nevermind. Where do you think the teens could be?â Solana looked up and down the hallway.Â
âNo idea, but we should start walking around. Weâre not gonna find them standing here.â
âTrue.â A crash echoed through the halls, causing the duo to stop in their tracks. It was followed by a loud, shrill scream. Solana turned to look at Madâs blank screen.Â
âWas that a kid?â The assistance droid stared towards the source of the noise.Â
âI think so.â Solana cracked his knuckles.
âWell, whatâre we waiting for?â
It took a few minutes for Thorn to calm their friend down, all of which Velvet spent leaning against the yellow wall, thinking. Thoughts ran through their head like wildfire, despite the blank expression their teammates saw.Â
This is definitely some kind of magic, she thought, taking a deep breath, Although, Iâm not sure what spell could cause something like this. A curse, maybe? But why would someone waste time cursing some stupid video game? NoâŚsomethingâs wrong. But what?Â
âV-Velvet?â Maroonâs quiet voice brought the assassin back to reality. They looked up and locked eyes with them.
âWhat?â
âAre you okay?â Velvet narrowed her eyes at them but sighed.
âYeah, fine. Just thinking.âÂ
âSo do you know whatâs going on now?â Thorn chimed in, crossing his arms. Velvet shrugged.
âPartially. My best guess is the game was somehow cursed, no idea how. If itâs a curse, then weâll have to find the catalyst.â
âCatalyst? What does that mean?âÂ
âItâs basically just the object the spellcaster puts the magic to maintain the spell in,â the teen replied, standing, âItâs probably the game disc itself, but I donât know how weâre gonna access that here.âÂ
âMaybe thereâs a physical apparition inside the game?â Maroon asked.Â
âI mean, itâs possible.â
âSo we just find this catalyst and break it, then we can go home?â Velvet looked at Thorn.
âWeâll have to find Mad and Solana first, but yeah.âÂ
âWhat are we doing standing around, then? Letâs find this thing.â Thorn took a step forward, but Velvet quickly pulled it back.
âHold on a second. I doubt our being here is the only effect the curse has on the game, thatâd be a waste of a curse. We have absolutely no idea what weâre up against right now.â
âWhen do we ever, Velvet? Whatâs the worst that can happen?â Velvet let out a strained laugh and crossed her arms.
âI have a guess. Try using your powers, either of you.â The two teens looked at each other before both raising a hand. After a few moments, nothing happened. Thornâs eyes widened as he looked down at his hand.
âW-what?â Maroon mumbled. Velvet sighed.
âJust as I thought. Whoever put this curse on the game completely cancelled any other magic.â
âAnd that means?â Thorn demanded.Â
âIt means our powers wonât work,â Maroon said quietly, lowering their hand, âAnd they wonât work until we leave.â Velvet nodded. She reached into her small pouch and pulled out another throwing knife. They handed one to Thorn and Maroon before pulling out another for themself. Thorn stared down at the pitch-black blade.Â
âItâs not much, but itâs something,â Velvet began, spinning their knife on one of their fingers, âHopefully you donât have to use them. Stay behind me and keep up.â Maroon nodded, but Thorn didnât move. Velvet narrowed her eyes at him.
âThorn?â they called out. Their teammate snapped back to reality, quickly looking up.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âWere you even listening?â Thorn glanced at Maroon before chuckling.
âNah, your voice nearly put me to sleep.â
âI swear to gods-â the assassin paused, âWhatever. Letâs move.â
âGot it, drama queen.â
âDonât call me that.â
âNot a chance.â
There were a few things Mad expected when it and Solana turned the next corner. One of them was more winding halls, complete with ugly yellow wallpaper and seemingly water-damaged carpet. Maybe even a child in the corner, scared out of their mind. What they definitely didnât expect was Johnny Darlington, gripping a kitchen knife in his right hand. Mad pulled Solana to a stop as a twisted smile overtook the boyâs face.
âWhat the fuckâŚâ Solana breathed.Â
âWhy hello there~â the character called out, raising his weapon, âWelcome to myâŚgame.â The blade flew through the air, flying right over Solanaâs head as he ducked.Â
âShit,â they mumbled. Mad quickly turned around and grabbed their friendâs arm. It took off back down the hallway, Darlingtonâs footsteps and laugh echoing behind them.Â
âWhat the fuck?â Solana shouted. Mad glanced at her before groaning.
âOf course, how could I not see that?â Solana glared at them.
âSee what, Mad?âÂ
âWhatever magic brought us here mustâve messed with the gameâs code. All the puzzles and NPCs-â
âMad, 3 words or less.â The elf pulled them around a corner as another knife soared past their TV.
âUm, okay. UhâŚeverything is wrong.â
âGreat,â she said sarcastically, âExactly what I was worried youâd say.â A knife sliced through one of Solanaâs pyjama pants, causing the elf to let out a string of curses.
âAre you okay?â Mad asked.
âYeah, fine,â he replied, âThese are just my favourite.â
âThey are good pants.â
âWhy thank you, Mad-â Another blade flew in between the duo, cutting her off. Solana let out a strained laugh.Â
âRight, that.â They quickly turned another corner, but Solana began to slow. Mad stared at her.
âWhat are you doing?âÂ
âItâsâŚa dead end,â they muttered in between breaths. Mad stopped as well, their screen going blank as more shrill laughter echoed behind them. The droid glanced down towards the yellow wall blocking their way. Solana turned the other way, quickly raising their hands.Â
âSolana, wait.â The elf looked back at them.
âWhat?âÂ
âThereâs a bat by the wall.â His eyes lit up as he quickly spun and sprinted down the hallway. Mad followed suit, Darlingtonâs laughs getting louder and louder behind them. The elf snatched the metal bat off of the ground, a wild grin overtaking her face.
âPerfect,â she breathed, swinging it in the air, âHey, Darlington! Letâs dance!â
Maroon let the knife sit gently in their left hand as the other two teens led the way down the hallway. Velvet and Thorn were silent ahead of them. Velvet stared at the various tears and markings on the walls, seemingly trying to decipher the language. Thorn, on the other hand, was strolling with his hands in his pockets. Marook looked between them, nearly running into Velvet when she stopped walking. She quickly balanced them as Thorn turned around to look at them.
âCan you guys hear that?â the assassin muttered. Thorn raised an eyebrow.
âHear what?â
âItâs a buzzing, almost like that buzz Mad makes sometimes.â Maroon straightened out their glasses.Â
âDo you think Madâs around?â they asked. Velvet shook their head.Â
âNo. Thatâd be too easy.â Thorn rolled his eyes.
âSure, mhm. Of course.â Velvet ignored it and took a left down a hallway. Maroon hurried after her, Thorn following behind. As they walked, a quiet buzzing soon filled Maroonâs ears.Â
âI hear it now. What do you think it is?â Maroon asked.Â
âNothing good.â
âHelpful,â Thorn muttered. The group turned another corner as the noise hummed loudly around them. A bright, neon green light quickly enveloped the trio. Maroon shut their eyes tightly and grabbed onto one of Thornâs hands. A loud thud echoed loudly, causing the teens to jump. A cold breeze flew through the area.Â
The light slowly faded away, allowing Maroon to open their eyes once again. The ugly wallpaper had been replaced with dark grey concrete blocks stacked on top of one another. The entrance was gone, with a solid wall now in its place. Another cold wind blew through the chamber, hissing as it went by. Thorn shivered next to them.
âWhat is this place?â Ae asked. Velvet turned to look at them.
âMy guess is itâs another level in the game.â
âBut donât you have to, you know, do something to advance?âÂ
âMaybe the curse did it,â Maroon chimed in, âIf we got too close to the catalystâŚâ Velvetâs eyes widened slightly before she let out a groan.
âOf course. The curse wouldnât want us to break it.â
âUmâŚnot exactly.â Velvet quickly turned and threw their knife towards the new voice. A squeak echoed as Maroon and Thorn raised theirs. In tje blink of an eye, Velvet drew two more blades from their bag.
âWait, please! I brought you here!â Velvet kept the knives raised but glanced at Maroon.
âThis is Darlington, right?â Maroonâs eyes widened.
âWhat?â The assassin stepped to the side, revealing the body of a middle-school-aged boy slumped against the wall. Velvetâs red and black blade pinned the fabric of his blue polo shirt to theâŚconcrete?
Maroon took a step towards Johnny Darlington. The boy flinched but Maroon placed their hand on the wall. Instead of cold concrete, it was soft and pushed inwards.Â
âIs thisâŚfoam?â they asked, looking down at Johnny. He nodded profusely. Maroon kneeled down and gently pulled the knife out. They tossed it back to Velvet, who promptly caught it and placed it back in the bag. Maroon held a hand out to Johnny. The boy glanced at Velvet and Thorn before taking it.
âAre you okay?â Maroon asked. Johnny stared at them for several seconds and quickly shook his head.Â
âIâm fine, but you guys wonât be. You need to get out of here.â Velvet raised an eyebrow.
âWhy?â Thorn asked, âWhatâs going on?âÂ
âThe game is cursed-â
âNo fucking shit, I had no idea,â Velvet mumbled.
â-Thereâs another me running around, but heâs trying to kill everyone. You have to leave.â
âWe canât,â Velvet interrupted, âWe canât leave until we break the curse.â Johnnyâs eyes widened.
âThatâs not possible.â
âJohnny, have you ever heard thisâŚalternate you talk about a curse catalyst?â Maroon questioned. The boy was quiet for a moment.
âYes, but-â
âTake us to it.â Johnny turned to Velvet as she crossed her arms.
âWhat?âÂ
âYou hear me. Take us to it so we can destroy it.â
âHeâll kill you. I wonât be able to stop him.â
âDoes it look like I care?â
âMy magic- I wonât be able to-â
âWhat happened to your magic?â Maroon chimed in, stepping in between Velvet and Johnny. Velvet glared at them.Â
âItâs not working, Iâm not sure why. But the point is, I have no way to protect you. I canât, in good conscience, let you face him. Iâve seen what heâs capable of.â
âListen, Darlington-â Velvet began, but the boy cut her off.
âPlease, Velvet, just call me Johnny.â Velvet raised a knife again, narrowing their eyes at him.
âHow do you know my name?â He smiled at them.
âI know the names of everyone whoâs ever watched my show.â Maroonâs eyes widened.Â
âSo you know-â
âYes, Maroon. I know your name.â The youngest teenâs eyes lit up and a smile appeared on their face.Â
âDo I want to know how that works?â Velvet mumbled, lowering the weapon.Â
âI have a guess,â Thorn began, âMagic.â
âI hate you.â
âFeelingâs mutual.â
âGuysâŚâ Maroon said quietly. Thorn glanced at their friend before letting out a sigh.
âRight, sorry.âÂ
âSorry. Johnny, can you take us to the catalyst now?â Velvet asked. The boy looked up at her again.
âI told you-â
âWe can handle ourselves, Johnny,â Maroon added, âWeâre not going to die.â
âYou have no idea-â Thorn walked up and placed a hand on his shoulder.Â
âJohnny, everyone here is in danger. If you can just take us to the catalyst, we can save everyone here.â The boy looked between each of the members of the Red Mafia before sighing.
âIâŚokay. Fine. But you have to promise me you wonât die. Please.â
âOh my gods, weâre not gonna die,â Velvet groaned, âJust take us there already.â Johnny reached out and grabbed Maroonâs hand. He pushed Thornâs off of his shoulder and grabbed it as well. Velvet raised an eyebrow.
âWhat are you doing?â she asked. Johnny smiled at them.Â
âTeleporting. Grab on.â Velvet let out another groan and stepped towards Maroon, taking their other hand. In a blink of an eye, the four of them were gone.
Solana and Velvet leave on a mission to steal some paperwork on the next planet in Prince Nolan's peace tour. While Solana and Nolan catch up, Velvet...well. She's Velvet.

2 weeks after âThe Mazeâ
Velvet quickly grabbed the manâs arm and pulled him into the alleyway, away from the guards. They didnât notice, and kept walking and chatting like nothing had happened.Â
âPrince Nolan.â The man turned around and almost let out a scream, but Velvet quickly covered his mouth.
âWatch it, idiot. Youâre gonna get me in trouble.â Nolan stared at them for several seconds.Â
âAre you going to be quiet?â He nodded, causing Velvet to sigh and remove her hand.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â He whispered.
âI need to talk to you. In private.â
âWhy would I go anywhere with you? You literally shot my mother.â Velvet rolled their eyes.
âAre you really upset about that? She was about to kill Solana.â
âYes but- whatever. Is Mo- Solana with you?âÂ
âThatâs actually what I need to talk to you about.â Nolanâs face dropped immediately and a look of worry took over.
âDid something happen? Is he ok?â Velvet raised an eyebrow.
âYeah, heâs fine. Whyâs that the first thing you assume?â
âCan you really blame me?â
âNot really,â they mumbled, âWill you come with me now?â Nolan looked up and down the alley before sighing.Â
âAlright, Iâve got time until my speech. Lead the way, Velvet Bolton.â
When Velvet woke up at about 10 a.m., they were surprised to see Solana wasnât awake yet. After running downstairs to grab an energy drink, much to Madâs dismay, the teen found themself in front of his door.
âSolana!â she called out, sliding the hood of her navy hoodie off of her head, âThe hell you doing in there?â
âSleeping, leave me alone!â Velvet narrowed their eyes at the closed door.
âIf youâre sleeping, how are you talking to me?â The elf didnât answer, causing Velvet to sigh.
âWhat are you actually doing in there?âÂ
âTrying to sleep.â
âDear gods,â the teen mumbled, reaching out to the doorknob. Surprisingly, it was unlocked. They stepped in, shutting the door behind them. Solanaâs fairy lights were set to a soft blue which almost managed to distract them from the chaos sprawling across the room. Clothes sat in various piles while the desk under the loft bed was covered in open notebooks and loose papers. Predictably, Solana was sitting on the suspended bed, glaring at Velvet. He was still in his pyjamas, donning a pair of black gym shorts and a white t-shirt. Their red hair was down, resting just below their shoulders.
âReally?â they asked, crossing their arms. The assassin shrugged.
âYou did it to me, might as well return the favour.âÂ
âCool, you can leave now.âÂ
âMad will just come up after me.â
âI think I prefer Mad.â Velvet rolled her eyes, pushing a few clothes to the ground so she could set her drink down on the dresser next to the door.
âWhy are you sulking in here?â Solana sighed, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed and jumping down.Â
âIâm not sulking,â she began, grabbing a hair tie off of the desk, âI just donât want to talk to people today.â Velvet raised an eyebrow before grabbing their drink off of the dresser again.Â
âWell, thatâs too bad. Guess Iâll just go on this mission to Hinak by myself.â Solana pulled their hair back, staring at the teen.
âWhat are you getting at?âÂ
âOh, nothing. Just that Hinak is the next location in Prince Nolanâs peace tour and I thought you wouldâve wanted to go. But itâs fine, Iâll go on my own.â
â...Iâll be ready in 10.â
âYouâve got 5 until Zaeor gets here.â
âFuck you.âÂ
âSo what were you saying about Mo- Solana?â Nolan asked as they walked down the alleyway.Â
âYou can just call her Mona, Iâll know who youâre talking about.â
âOh- right. Whatâs going on with Mona?â Velvet adjusted their black beanie and sunglasses before turning back to him.
âDoes today mean anything to you, Your Highness?â she asked. Nolan paused for a moment.
âUh, please just call me Nolan. AndâŚIâll be fully honest, Iâm not sure what day it is.â Velvet raised an eyebrow.
âOctober 14th, 2364.â Nolanâs eyes grew wide as he stopped in his tracks. Velvet stopped as well, turning around to look at him.
âItâsâŚMonaâs birthday.âÂ
âAh. I figured it was something like that.â
âWhy? Whatâs going on?â Velvet sighed, crossing their arms.
âLetâs just say Solana hasnât been the mostâŚcooperative person today. They seemed out of it, so I thought since Iâd be here anyways weâd pay you a visit.âÂ
âOh- wait, âweâ?â Velvet smirked before raising her hand up to activate her comms microphone.Â
âHey Solana, get over here.â Nolan smiled brightly before quickly adjusting his crown.
âHow the fuck did you disappear so fast?â Solana responded. The assassin rolled their eyes.Â
âJust get over here.â
âWhere are you?â Velvet rubbed their temples, catching Nolanâs attention.
âIsâŚeverything okay?â the prince asked. Velvet nodded.
âSolana, our comms have fucking trackers in them.â
âWait, they-â
âDear gods, the alleyway by the jewellery store. Hurry up.â They turned off their mic before groaning again. An awkward silence took over the alleyway as Velvet glanced at Nolan. He was dressed in a simple grey button-up partially tucked into black dress pants. His gold earrings hand various flower charms hanging from them, matching the small lilac pendant hanging around his neck. His crown had flower patterns as well, but only on the gems.Â
âVelvet? You down here?â Solanaâs voice called out from the entrance to the alleyway. Nolanâs smile grew wider as Velvet shouted back.
âYeah, get over here.â
âDid you find the papersâŚâ Their teammateâs voice trailed off as she stopped in front of Nolan. The two elves stared at each other for several seconds before Solana rushed forward and pulled him into a hug.Â
âHoly shit, what are you doing here?â they muttered. Nolan let out a slight chuckle.
âYour friend here may or may not have kidnapped me.â
âShut up, you came willingly,â Velvet stated, crossing their arms. Nolan laughed again.
âYeah, thatâs true.â Solana took a step back, smirking at the teen.
âWow, Velvet, I didnât think you had it in you to do something nice.âÂ
âFuck you, Solana.â Nolan looked between the two of them before chuckling.Â
âBut seriously, thanks Velvie,â the elf said, ruffling Nolanâs hair. The teen rolled their eyes.
âWhatever, your moping was pissing me off.â
âI wasnât moping-â
âYes you were.â
âNo I wasnât.â
âYes-â
âAnyways!â Nolan chimed in, taking Solanaâs hand, âWhat are you guys doing here?â
âThatâs confidential. But speaking of that, I should go.â Solana grabbed her wrist as she took a step backwards.Â
âWait, donât you need help with the mission?â Velvet raised an eyebrow.
âDid you really think I needed your help? No, this is an easy mission. I just brought you along so you could see your boyfriend.â The elvesâ faces grew scarlet as Velvet laughed and turned around.
âYou two have fun. Solana, leave your comms on and tell me when youâre done.â Before Solana could get another word out, the teen disappeared around the corner. He looked up at Nolan, who smiled at him.Â
âYou know, this isnât what I thought Iâd be doing today,â he joked. Solana chuckled.Â
âYeah, thatâs the story of my life.â They were quiet for a moment. The birds chirped above them, flying in mesmerising patterns that caught both of their attention. Nolan looked over at her before his eyes grew wide and he quickly dropped her hand. Solana turned towards him while he turned away.Â
âSoâŚhow are you?â the prince asked.Â
âUh- Fine. You?â
âIâm good.â Solana looked up at the birds.Â
âPeace tour, huh? I know youâve been wanting to do that for a while.â Nolan smiled.Â
âYeah, Mom finally agreed to it after the recent revolt.â
âRevolt?â Solana asked, looking up at him again, âWhat happened?â Nolan sighed.Â
âIâm still trying to figure that out myself. It happened last week in the Lehol district.â
âProbably was a wage revolt, then.â
âThatâs what Mom said, but I already declared better wages last month.â Solana put their hands in their pockets before sighing.Â
âI know you mean well, Nolan, but itâs gonna take a while for anything you say to take effect. And thatâs gonna leave people starving.â Nolan groaned and slowly took his crown off of his head.
âHow do I fix it, then?â
âThatâs the questionâŚâ she mumbled, âSend the ambassadors down with supplies to keep them afloat until the wages can take effect.â Nolan looked over at him. They were looking back up at the birds.Â
âMaybe even go there yourself. Put pressure on employers to actually do it. Your dad ordered things but didnât enforce them, so thatâs what theyâre expecting. You need to show them thatâs not how itâs going to work under you.â Nolan smiled as she turned back to look at him. He looked into their white eyes for several seconds.
â...what?âÂ
âI forgot how good of an advisor you were.â Solana chuckled and took their sunglasses off their face. He slid them onto the collar of his purple t-shirt and put his hands in his pockets.Â
âWhat can I say, I'm a genius.â
âPfft, yeah. Uh- thanks for the advice.âÂ
âAnytime, dude. Well, anytime you see me, I guess.â
âSolana, your mic is still on.â The elf jumped slightly, causing Nolan to jump as well. The prince nearly fell to the ground but Solana quickly caught him.
âHave you been listening this whole time?â
âYep. Decent plan, by the way.â
âVelvet, I swear to Gazra-â
âOh would you look at that, Iâve gotta go.â
âVelvet-â The beep from Velvetâs microphone muting caused Solana to groan.
âThat littleâŚâ
âWhatâs going on?â Nolan asked. Solana looked down at the elf in his arms.
âNothing, Iâm just going to haveâŚa few words with a certain red-haired bitch later.â
Velvet chuckled to herself as she walked down the sidewalk. With the mission papers safely tucked in their bag, all there was left to do was wait. The teen swung into a small coffee shop at the corner and quickly reemerged with a cup in hand. Thatâs when she nearly ran headfirst into one of Nolanâs personal guards.
âFuck-â they muttered, quickly steadying their coffee, âWhat the hell?â
âIâm so sorry, maâam,â a voice said as a hand grabbed onto their arm. They locked eyes with a man, maybe in his mid-20s or so, dressed head to toe in Gazran body armour.Â
âItâs okay,â they said, shrugging his arm off. Another guard appeared behind the other, a concerned look on her face.
âYou alright, kiddo?â Velvet tugged down on her beanie before resting a hand inside her side bag.
âYeah, Iâm fine.â The first guard smiled at them as the second raised her wrist to glance at her watch. Her eyes quickly grew wide.
âShit,â she exclaimed, âWeâre late, Connor.â The first guard turned towards her, pushing his purple bangs out of his face.
âWhat?â
âItâs noon.âÂ
âWhat?â Connor quickly looked around the trio.Â
âW-Whereâs the prince?â Velvet suppressed a smirk. The second stared at him.
âShit.â
âWhere was he last?âÂ
âI know he got off the ship.â
âNo fucking shit, dude. Anywhere else?âÂ
âIâŚdonât remember,â the second guard mumbled, âShould we alert the captain?â Connor quickly grabbed her arm, causing her to jump slightly.
âAre you crazy, Alex? Weâll lose our jobs!â
âThatâs going to happen anyways!â
âNot if I have anything to say about it,â Connor muttered, crossing his arms, âWeâll search the whole area. He probably just got distracted and wandered off, no big deal. So heâs a little late, so what?â Alex narrowed her eyes at him.
âOh, and Iâm the crazy one. Queen Orbita will have our heads. Not to mention how upset Nolan will be! Heâs been planning this tour for years.â
âUm, if I may,â Velvet called out, raising a hand. The two guards turned back to her, Connor letting out a quiet chuckle.
âSorry, kid, forgot you were there. Whatâs up?â Velvet looked between the two guards before clearing her throat.
âAre you talking about Prince Nolan Byes-Sobt by chance?â Alexâs eyes lit up.
âYes! Have you seen him?âÂ
âI saw him go into that clothing store across the street when I went to get my coffee. No idea if heâs still there, though, it was about twenty minutes ago.â Connor set a hand on Velvetâs shoulder as a large smile overtook his face.
âThank you so muchâŚuhâŚI never caught your name.â A chill went down Velvetâs spine.
âOh, right. UmâŚVivian. Iâm Vivian.â Alex grabbed Connorâs arm and waved at them.
âThank you, Vivian!â The assassin watched the two guards sprint in front of a car. It honked at them, but they ignored it as they ran into the store. Velvet took a sip of her coffee before chuckling.
âThis should be funâŚâ
Alex let out a groan as she stepped out of the store, her twin on her tail. She rested her hand on her pistol as she scanned the street.Â
âI think we just missed him in there,â Connor said quietly, âMaybe we can go see if Vivian saw him leave after we went in?â Alex gestured to the coffee shop.
âTheyâre long gone, Connor. We have to alert Captain.âÂ
âNo!â he exclaimed, crossing his arms, âAlex, weâve worked so hard to get to this point. Weâre not going to lose it all because the prince decided to wander off. No way.â
âHeâs nearly half an hour late to his speech, theyâre going to be sending search parties out for all of us soon.â Connor frowned.
âWhere could he have goneâŚâ Alex glanced over at her brother before her eyes widened.
âConnor, whereâs your gun?â His hand quickly fell to his empty holster. Alex locked eyes with him.
âI-I donât know- I had it a moment ago!âÂ
âShit shit, this isnât good.â A laugh came from behind them, seemingly coming from the storeâs entrance. The twins spun around, greeted by an empty doorway with a certain handgun in front of it. A chill went down Alexâs spine.Â
âOh thank Gazra, I mustâve just dropped it,â Connor breathed, kneeling down.Â
âYeahâŚweirdâŚâ
âBoo.â Two hands quickly collided with her back and shoved her towards Connor. They both fell onto the concrete, drawing the eyes of passing pedestrians. Alex was soon back on her feet, Connor close behind. The sidewalk and street were empty.Â
âWhat the fuck,â Alex breathed. Connor took a deep breath.
âAlex, are we being haunted?â She turned back to look at her twin.
âAre you crazy, Connor? Who would be haunting us?â
âM-maybe the prince is dead and his soul is haunting us because we failed to keep him alive and-â Alex grabbed her brotherâs shoulders and looked him in the eyes.Â
âConnor, shut up. Thereâs no such thing as ghosts. Not in that way.â
âBut-â
âIâm offended, youâd deny my existence?â a cold voice whispered in Alexâs ear. The soldier jumped and turned around, but all she saw was a certain red-haired teenager walking down the sidewalk.Â
âWhatâŚâ she breathed. Connor smiled behind her.
âVivian!â he called out, âHi!â The teen turned around and waved slightly. She stood on the sidewalk as the two guards caught up.
âDid you ever see Prince Nolan come out of the store?â Alex asked, crossing her arms. Vivian shook their head.Â
âNo, sorry. Are you two okay? You look like youâve seen a ghost.â Connor let out a strained laugh.
âThatâs pretty close, actually.â Vivian raised an eyebrow.
âReally?â Alex elbowed Connor before turning back to the teen.
âConnorâs just paranoid. Can you do me a favour, Vivian?â She nodded.
âDo you have a phone?â
âUh, yeah?â
âCan I see it?â Vivian narrowed their eyes at her but slowly unlocked and handed over the device. Alex typed in her number and handed it back.
âIf you see the prince around, give me a call. Okay?â Vivian looked down at the phone before nodding.
âThanks, Vivian,â Connor added. The teen smiled at him.
âItâs nothing. Iâm just glad I can help.â
âYouâre helping us a lot, Vivian,â Alex said, âWeâre going to go search the east side of the city now. Thanks again.â Vivian nodded before turning on her heels and continuing down the sidewalk. Connor turned to Alex.
âWhat a nice kid.â
âYeah. Something about her seemsâŚfamiliar.âÂ
âOh, and Iâm the crazy one.â
âShut up.â
âAnd thatâs when you met your wife?â Solana questioned, âGods, you were so upset that day but you wouldnât tell me what happened.â Nolan laughed sheepishly.Â
âYeahâŚshe. Can be annoying. But I donât have much of a choiceâŚâ
âFor now.â Nolan looked at them.
âHuh?âÂ
âYou only have, what, two more years until youâre of age? Then your mom canât control you anymore.âÂ
âItâs- well. Thereâs not much I can do about it even when Iâm king.â Solana raised an eyebrow.Â
âWhy?â Nolan looked to the ground.
âGazra is in disarray. Riots are breaking out left and right, corruption, etc. Our military is about as skilled as a group of children with sharpened sticks. Politically, we are the weakest government in most of the known galaxy. Imagine if their leader was unmarried? Itâs bad enough I donât have an heir yet.â Solana stared at him for a few moments before sighing.Â
âYouâre right,â she mumbled, âSo Kandace was right, then?â Nolan froze.Â
âW-what about Kandace?âÂ
âWhen I was captured in Gazra, Kandace came to talk to me. Said whatâs-her-face was pregnant.â The princeâs eyes went wide.
âN-no!â he paused as Solana chuckled, âIâŚeven though it would help a lotâŚI donât think I could bring myself to do that.âÂ
âEven for the sake of the country?â
âI donât know. If it was absolutely necessary, maybe? Isabella hasnât tried to make me do anything, soâŚâ
âAh.â Nolan glanced at them.
âDidâŚdid you hear what happened to Kandace, then?â It was Solanaâs turn to look away.
âNolanâŚthat was me.â
âOh.â
âYeah.â The alley was quiet as Nolan looked her up and down.Â
âCan I ask why?â Solana sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets.Â
âShe tried to kill me and Velvet. I had to do my job.â
âWhat is your job?â Nolan questioned, causing his friend to shrug.Â
âKeep Velvet alive so she can do her job.â
âAnd that is?âÂ
âKilling Unor Bolton.â
âOh.â Solana sighed and turned back to him.
âDonât worry about that, Nolan. Youâve got other things to deal with.âÂ
âMona, weâre on the brink of a civil war and youâre talking about assassinating one of the leaders of our main ammunition and supply dealers. Youâve got to understand how terrifying that thought is.â
âRight, I know,â they began, resting their head in their hand, âButâŚthe alternative is so much worse.â Nolan sighed.Â
âAnd Iâm guessing you canât tell me what that is?âÂ
â...no.â The prince groaned. Solana looked up at him. Nolan held his crown in his left hand while running his right through his hair. Solana gently took the headwear from him and straightened out his hair.Â
âNolan, listen,â she said quietly, setting the crown back on his head, âIf Unorâs allowed to run freeâŚa lot of people are going to die. And if we donât stop him now, there wonât be any way to do so. Heâs already too powerful.â
âSo what do you suggest?â Nolan asked, âIf we go into a warâŚâÂ
âYouâre not going to go into a war, Nolan.âÂ
âI find that hard to believe.â Solana held both of his hands and met his eyes.
âUnor isnât fully in charge of B.A.D., right? Nala is. Iâll talk to Velvet and see what they can do about helping you stockpile.â Nolan looked away from her.Â
âWellâŚâ Solana lifted his chin and smiled at him.Â
âIt will be okay, okay?âÂ
â...okay.â
Nolan jumped slightly when Velvet jumped down in front of Solana and him. Solana sighed and crossed his arms, stepping away from him.
âWhat, did you realise you need my help with the mission?â they asked. Velvet rolled her eyes.Â
âNo, I completed the mission like an hour ago,â the teen replied, turning to look at Nolan, âI just came to tell Nolan Iâm currently leading his personal guards on a wild goose chase and they totally think heâs haunting them.â Nolanâs eyes widened.
âWhat?â Solana broke out into a fit of laughter as the prince stared at Velvet.Â
âI even got one of their phone numbers, so I can call them almost anywhere in the city claiming I saw you. Your guards are fucking stupid.â Nolan sighed.
âWhy am I not surprised?â Solana took a deep breath, suppressing another laugh.
âWho are your guards nowadays?â they asked.
âA new pair of twins, Alex and Connor. I donât think they had enrolled when you left.â
âAh. What happened to Helo?â Nolan looked away as Velvet raised an eyebrow.Â
âHeâŚhe uhâŚâ After a few more moments of him stuttering, Velvet stopped him.
âDo you want me to tell her?â Nolan looked up at them.
â...yeah.â Solana narrowed his eyes at the teen.
âHow do you know and I donât?âÂ
âI watch the news and you donât.âÂ
âI watch the news with you!â Velvet rolled her eyes.
âNo, you sit next to me on the couch while I watch the news. Thereâs a difference.â
âAnyways, it was an assassination attempt. The guard, Helo I presume,â they glanced at Nolan, who nodded, âJumped in the way of a bullet headed towards Nolan.â Solanaâs eyes widened and she turned to look at the prince, but he looked at the ground.
âNolanâŚâ they began. Nolan shook his head before looking at them.
âItâs okay, heâŚhe saved me. Heâs a hero now.â Solana stepped towards him and pulled the prince into a hug. He rested his head on her shoulder, closing his eyes. Velvet looked between the two before sighing.
âAnyways, Iâm off to bully them some more-â
âActually, shouldnât you get back to your tour, Nolan?â Solana asked, taking his hand. The prince quickly lifted his wrist.
âCrap- Iâm so late!âÂ
âHow long did you think you had when I grabbed you?â Velvet asked, crossing her arms.Â
âAbout three hours?â The assassin laughed.
âNo, you had maybe half an hour.â
âI-â Solana let out a chuckle.Â
âYeah, you should go. Iâll talk to you later, okay?â Nolan nodded before letting go of Solanaâs hand. Velvet took a few steps back before turning around.Â
âSolana, meet me back at the Umbrella?â Solana raised an eyebrow.
âWhat are you doing?âÂ
âJust gonna escort the prince back to his guards, would hate for something to happen to him.âÂ
âI-â they paused, âYou know, I donât think I want to know.â A wicked smile appeared on the teenâs face.
âSmart.â
âPlease donât kill anyone.â Velvet let out a gasp.Â
âMe? Commit murder? I would never!â
âIâm serious, Velvet. Iâm not breaking you out of prison today.âÂ
âFine, gods. Letâs go, Nolan.â The prince looked up at his friend one more time.Â
âBye, Mona.â Solana smiled at him.Â
âSee you later, Nolan.â
Alexâs eyes lit up when she saw a certain teenager walking over, Prince Nolan in tow.Â
âVivian!â Connor called out next to her, âYou found him!â The teen smiled at them.
âThat I did.â Nolan glanced at them.
âVivian?â They looked up at him.
âThatâs my name.â A confused look covered the princeâs face for a few moments before his eyes widened.
âOh! Right, Vivian.â Connor jumped forward and pulled him into the hug.
âDonât disappear on us like that, man!â Nolan chuckled.
âSorry, Connor.â Alex placed a hand on Vivianâs shoulder. The teen jumped a bit but looked up at her.
âThank you so much for your help today, Vivian. If you ever need anything, the resources of Gazra are at your service.â Vivian raised an eyebrow.
âReally?â
âReally. Youâve done the entirety of our kingdom a huge favour.â Nolan stifled a laugh, causing Vivian to send a glare at him.
âThank you so much, Alex. I really appreciate it.â The guard smiled at them.Â
âOf course. Do you need a ride anywhere?âÂ
âNo thanks. MyâŚsibling is waiting for me,â they replied, getting another chuckle from the prince, âAlthough, I do have a piece of advice for you.â Alex raised an eyebrow.
âAlright, what is it?â Vivian went up to her tiptoes and leaned close to her ear.
âPray to whatever god you believe in.â Alex froze.
âW-what? Why?â She heard a small chuckle come from the teen.
âIf you can see me, itâs already too late.â Alex quickly turned to look at Vivian, but they were gone. She whipped her head around to look at Connor.Â
âWhereâd they go?â Connor shrugged.
âWhereâd who go?â Nolan asked, crossing his arms.Â
âThe teen who brought you here, Vivian.â The prince raised an eyebrow.
âHuh? I found you guys on my own. You feeling okay, Alex?â The two guards looked at each other.
âYou definitely saw them, right Connor?â
âYeah, I did. I swear we got their number and everything.âÂ
âRight! Here, hold on-â She quickly unlocked her phone and scrolled through her contacts, but the one labelled Vivian was gone.
â...What?â Nolan put a hand on her shoulder and let out a strained laugh.
âLetâs get back to the tour. You guys should get some sleep if youâre hallucinating.â
âWeâre not hallucinating!â
âIâll believe that when I meet thisâŚâVivianâ.â

Immediately after âThe Labyrinthâ
Maroon stared the creature in the eyes, their hands raised. Mad held onto a nearly unconscious Velvet as the creature roared again. They attempted to keep a grip on Kil-layye Moâore as Mad picked them up. Thornâs back pressed against Maroonâs and he raised the assassinâs staff. Solanaâs spear remained steadily pointed at it while the elf attempted to catch his breath. A large mushroom grew in between the group and the monster, but its giant jaws chopped it in half.Â
âFuck,â Solana breathed, âWhat is this thing?â
âNot thing,â Maroon corrected, âHis name is Khatar.â Thorn stared at them.
âWait, like Khatar from divination? I thought he died a while ago in that accident.â Maroon looked at the ground, their head pounding.
â...no.â
âSo what do we do?â Solana asked.Â
âFuckingâŚkill it,â Velvet mumbled weakly from Madâs arms, their sword falling to the ground. The droid quickly caught it.
âWhatever you do, do it quickly. Velvetâs already losing more blood than she should be.â
âThis is pretty average for them, actually.â Solana glanced at Velvet for a retort, but the assassin was out cold.Â
âIâve got an idea,â Maroon began, catching everyoneâs attention, âWe canât kill him, but if we trap himâŚmaybe we can find a way to turn him back.âÂ
âTurn him back?â Mad questioned, steadying Velvetâs head.
âWhat happened to him?â Thorn asked. Maroon took a deep breath as mushrooms began sprouting around Khatar.
âI canât tell you right now. I need you to justâŚtrust me on this.â Solana glanced at them before nodding.
âYou got it, Maroon, you take the lead.â
âWeâll follow behind,â Thorn added.
âWell- I wonât. But I know youâve got it, Maroon,â Mad stated. The youngest teen smiled before facing the creature.
âDonât worry Khatar, Iâll save you. I promise.â
Mushrooms sprouted in front of Khatar, pushing him back. He roared loudly and his tail whipped towards Maroon. Solana jumped forward and sliced at his tail with her spear. He screeched and slithered backwards.Â
âThorn, can you knock the wall down? I donât want him running away,â Maroon called out. Thorn nodded, raising his hands and summoning three massive vines beneath the dirt. The wall crumbled to the ground and created a pile of dirt about as tall as Khatar. Maroon quickly grew a mushroom cage around him as a falling piece of rock landed right on his head. Khatar yelped and jumped up and straight over the dirt pile.Â
âShit,â Solana breathed, âAre we following?â Maroon glanced back at Mad. They had backed up to the opening, Velvet still in their arms. They looked back at the rubble before calling out to it.Â
âMad, are you-â
âTaking her up to the Madbay? Yes.â Maroon nodded and turned back to Solana and Thorn.Â
âOkay, letâs follow. Weâll find a place to corner him.â
âHow? We already know your cages arenât gonna hold him,â Solana asked. A pain spiked Maroonâs head, causing the younger teen to lean over. Thorn materialised next to them.
âMushroom, are you okay?â Maroon nodded slowly.
âYeah, letâs go.â
âMaroon, if youâre hurt-âÂ
âIâm okay, Solana,â they interrupted, âIâŚI have to help him.â Solana stared at them for several seconds before sighing.
âAlright, letâs go.â Vines grew amongst the rubble and pushed the rocks out of the way, revealing the entrance. Maroon took off down the path, shortly followed by the other two.Â
âI think weâll have to knock him unconscious,â they began.Â
âAnd after that?â Solana questioned.Â
âFind a way to break his curse.âÂ
âCurse?â Thorn exclaimed, âWhat happened?â Maroon led the trio down a path leading to the right. A line of blood traced the walls, presumably from the hit Solana landed on his tail.Â
âSo you remember how he went missing?âÂ
âYeah?â
âAnd not even Ailuj could find him?âÂ
âMhm.â
âApparently, he looked into his own future.âÂ
âOhhhhhhhh,â Thorn said, âAnd then she punished him?â
âIf you see your future, you can change it,â Thorn started.
âOr ensure it,â Maroon added.Â
âSo why do you want to undo his curse then?â Solana questioned, âSeems like he kinda deserved it.â Maroon looked away.Â
âHeâŚI donât know. He wanted to save a family member. I guess I feel bad that he just wanted to do something good and got punished.â Thorn looked away and took a deep breath.Â
âI see. Well, weâll do our best.âÂ
âWhere was he hiding?â Thorn asked.
âThe forest.â
âWhen did you go to the forest?â
âWhen you blew up half the academy.â
â...Oh.â
âIâm just. Not gonna ask,â Solana muttered. A roar echoed, stopping the trio in their tracks. The wall to their left burst, causing Maroon to create a mushroom to protect them from falling rubble. A squeak came from their right, followed by Khatarâs roar. Maroonâs eyes widened.Â
âWyrmis?â The giant worm slithered up to them and hissed at the creature.
âWyrmis, get away!â They shouted. Maroon watched in slow motion as Khatarâs claw swung towards Wyrmis. Their face grew hot and their head pounded once again. The claw cut through the worm's skin and the world grew blurry. They saw Solana jump towards the claw, slicing through it. Instead of Khatarâs roar, though, Maroonâs ears were filled with wordless static. Thorn placed a hand on Maroonâs shoulder and attempted to turn them to face him. Maroon shrugged aer off and turned towards Khatar. Their fingers tingled as they raised their hands before their vision went black.Â
Mad kicked open the door to the Madbay, placing Velvet on the closest bed. The teen stirred slightly as the robot ran around grabbing various items. They stood over her for several seconds.
âFuck,â it breathed. Velvet let out a strained laugh before coughing.Â
âThat bad, huh?âÂ
âLetâs just say I have no idea how youâre conscious. Youâve passed out from less.â
âCrazy what armour does.â
âDonât get me wrong, youâre still bleeding to death.â Velvet rolled her eyes.
âYeah, yeah. Hand me my phone.âÂ
âWhy?â Velvet didnât respond and instead closed her eyes. Mad quickly jumped forward and grabbed her right wrist.Â
âVelvet? Are you-â
âYeah justâŚâ they paused, âRestingâŚmy eyes. My phone?âÂ
âNo need.â Mad jumped at Zaeorâs voice and quickly spun around. The god was once again dressed in his sparkly black robe and a stern look on his face. He walked up to Velvet, who glared at him.Â
âWhat the fuck is in the basement?â they demanded. Zaeor held a hand over her. Shadows enveloped both his hand and all of Velvetâs injuries.
âWhy were you in the basement?â
âThe worm was missing so weâŚweâŚâ The teenâs eyes slowly closed, prompting Zaeor to turn to Mad.Â
âWyrmis went missing,â it began, âWe were looking for him when Thorn and Velvet found a door they didnât recognise. We found Wyrmis, but got attacked by a creature.â Zaeor frowned and glanced back at the unconscious Velvet. He mumbled something that Mad couldnât make out before turning back.
âAre the others still down there?â he finally asked. Mad nodded. Zaeor sighed and waved away the shadows on Velvet. The only remaining sign of their injuries was the tears in their mission uniform and the various bloodstains.Â
âIâll go get the rest.â
âWait-â Mad interrupted, âWhy do you have a creature from Gaelicia down there? What else is down there?â Zaeor frowned again.Â
âHow did you-â
âItâs someone Maroon used to know. Is it guarding something?â The god stayed silent and walked to the Madbay door.Â
âWatch over Velvet. Iâll be back.â
Mushrooms littered the dirt path and walls. Solana slowly sat up as the dust cleared, coughing. Fungus-covered rubble slammed into the ground, throwing more dirt in the air. The elf stood, wiping a few spores from their arms.
âThorn? Maroon?â She called out, âAre you guys okay?â They heard a groan to their left, followed by an âIâm fineâ from Thorn. Solana waved his hand to clear the dust and eventually found Thorn sitting on the ground. Ae had a hand on aer head as Solana held a hand out to aer. Thorn took it, eyes wide.
âMaroon? Whereâs Maroon?â
âI donât know.â Thorn ran around the rubble, slowly lifting various pieces. Solana followed suit. The elf climbed over a large pile of fallen wall and gasped.Â
âOh my Gazra,â they breathed. In front of her laid Khatarâs body, rotting from the inside out. His eyeballs were replaced by bright red mushrooms and his mouth was stuffed with them. Spiky spores stuck out of its blue and green scales, pinning the immobile body to the ground.
Maroon was curled up a few metres in front of it, unconscious. Mushrooms still grew near their feet and hands. The elf slid down the hill towards them. The scar on their left eyebrow had reopened and bled onto the dirt. Other than that, the youngest teen seemed unharmed.Â
âThorn, over here!â A sound came from behind Solana, causing them to turn around. He watched as Wyrmis slowly slithered towards Maroon, curling up around them. He was bigger than Velvet had described him, about 6 or 7 metres long now. Thorn came running over the dirt hill and slid down, calling out Maroonâs name as it ran towards them. Wyrmis moved his tail slightly so Thorn could plop down right my Maroonâs head. The wormâs blood slowly dripped onto Maroon and the dirt all around it. Thorn cradled their friendâs head in their arms as Solana kneeled down next to him.
âMaroon, are you okay?â the prince shouted, clearly attempting to hold back tears. Solana set a hand on their shoulder.
âTheyâre going to be fine, Thorn. Letâs focus on getting them-â
âOut of the way.â Solana and Thorn jumped and turned to find Zaeor standing behind them. The sight of the god in the dark robe sent a shiver down Solanaâs spine. They quickly moved out of the way and took Thorn with them. Zaeor gently picked up Maroon like a baby. Wyrmis hissed at him but a simple raised hand shut the creature up. Thorn glared at Zaeor, but the god didnât seem to notice. Instead, he offered his hands to the two mafia members.
âGrab on,â he mumbled, âWeâre going upstairs.âÂ
âWhat about Wyrmis?â Thorn demanded, âAre you just going to leave him to die?â Zaeor sighed and waved a hand, circling the worm in shadows. When they faded, the creature was gone.Â
âThere, I healed it- him and teleported him upstairs. Can we go now?â Solana grabbed his right with a nod. It took Thorn a few seconds but eventually, the prince cautiously took the godâs hand. In a second, they were gone.
Maroon didnât want to open their eyes. Their head pounded, their body ached, and chills swept through their limbs. Exhaustion seemed to take over their entire being, preventing them from opening their eyes to see the world. A warm presence was curled up next to them and eased the ache in their ribs. Maroon could hear muttering in the background that they couldnât make out. One voice was Velvetâs, while the other appeared to belong to a certain god of shadows. Thatâs what finally made the teen force their eyes open.Â
The fluorescent lights of the Madbay shone down on them, forcing them to squint. The presence turned out to be Thorn, who seemed to be napping next to them. To their left was Velvet, now sitting up and mumbling to Zaeor in a language Maroon didnât recognize. Mad hung up a new IV drip on her rack before glancing back at Maroon.
âMaroon!â they called out, rushing over, âAre you okay?â The younger teen slowly sat up, transferring Thornâs head to their lap. Mad helped them up and quickly supported them with several pillows. It felt as if every set of eyes was on them as they replied.
âYeahâŚIâm okay. What happened?â
âI was hoping you could answer that,â Velvet stated coldly, removing the blanket from on top of her. Tears were still visible in her uniform, blood soaking the fabric.Â
âVelvet, do not get out of that bed,â Mad ordered. Zaeor nodded in agreement.
âTheyâre right, kiddo. Your bodyâs still exhausted from healing.â Velvet rolled her eyes but opted to hang her legs off of the bed instead.Â
âWhatâs wrong with you, Maroon?â Velvet demanded. The teen stared at them blankly.
â...what?â
âVelvet,â Mad muttered, âWhat they meant was, your powers. Somethingâs happening to them, causing them to go haywire more often. Did something happen?â Maroon locked eyes with Zaeor before shaking their head.
âN-not that I know of.â Velvet groaned.
âOf fucking course.âÂ
âVelvet, calm down,â Zaeor scolded, âMaroon, are you sure? Nothing happened with Unor?â The name sent a chill down their spine and they took a shaky breath.
âN-no.âÂ
âMaybe it was Lâarj Mahnnnh. I knew we couldnât trust him,â Velvet chimed in. Maroon shook their head.
âNothing happened with anyone. IâŚI donât know whatâs wrong with me.â Zaeor flashed a sympathetic look at them and moved to stand in between the two teens.Â
âItâs okay, Maroon. I have a few tests I can run to see whatâs happening so we can fix it. Is that okay?â He asked the question to Maroon, but also Mad, who nodded. Maroon took another shaky breath before nodding as well.Â
âW-what happened to Wyrmis?â Maroon asked. Zaeor gestured to the bottom of the bed. Maroon leaned over to see the giant worm curled up around the bed, fast asleep.
âI have no idea how that thing grew so fucking fast,â Velvet mumbled. Zaeor chuckled.Â
âItâs been a while since we got him, no wonder heâs not a baby anymore.â
âA-and Khatar?â The Madbay grew silent. Maroon looked at everyone, waiting for an answer. Madâs screen went blank while Zaeor glanced away. Velvet groaned.
âAre you guys really not gonna tell them?â She asked, sighing, âFine, Iâll do it then. Itâs dead.â Maroonâs stomach dropped.
â...what?âÂ
âWhen I arrived, he had already passed due toâŚwellâŚâ
âYou, presumably,â Velvet finished the godâs sentence. Zaeor sighed.
âI was trying to say it gently, Velvet.â
âWhatever.â Maroon stared at the floor.
âIâŚI killed him. I promised him- I said I would help him- I-â Mad stepped forward and pulled the young teen into a hug.
âMaroon, listen to me. Itâs okay, it was an accident. You didnât mean to.â Thorn stirred on their lap, slowly opening his eyes and sitting up. The prince was met with their teary-eyed companion who stared at them. Thorn looked around the room before sighing.
âYou told them already, huh?â
âSo itâs trueâŚI- Iâm a mons-âÂ
âDonât you dare finish that sentence, Maroon Pembrooke,â Thorn interrupted, pulling them away from Mad, âYou arenât a monster. You made a mistake, an accident.â
âHeâs dead, Thorn!âÂ
âIf itâs any consolation,â Zaeor began, âHe was already passing before you all showed up. Seemingly of old age.â Maroon stared at him, a tear streaming down their face. Thorn hugged them tightly as Velvet sighed from her bed.
âSee, you did save him. Problem solved. Now whereâs Solana?âÂ
âGrabbing food,â Mad replied, âMaroon, do you want us to give you some space? I can bring you dinner in a few.â The teen nodded, causing a smile to appear on the droidâs face. It then turned around and grabbed Velvet from their bed. Velvet squirmed in their arms.
âMad, I can walk.â
âNope. Zaeor, grab the pillows and the IV drip. Weâll set her up on the couch.â The god obliged, waving his hand. The objects suddenly disappeared, along with all three of them. Thorn looked down at them and squeezed.
âItâs okay, Maroon. ItâsâŚlike Zaeor said. He was going anyway.âÂ
âBut I did it,â they mumbled, âI did it and I didnât even know it. SomethingâŚsomething is seriously wrong.â Thorn sighed as the younger teen rested their head on their shoulder.

Thorn turned the bottle upside down, causing the orange liquid to pour quickly into the cauldron. Maroon tightly closed their eyes and moved behind one of the wooden tables. Fawn looked at them and laughed.Â
âWhatâs the matter, Maroon? Canât handle a simple sleep potion?â She taunted. Maroon opened one eye.
âItâs not that- Itâs just- Thorn-â they looked up at their friend. Thorn set the empty vial on his table. They had their signature smirk plastered on their face but their eyes had a hint of sadness behind them. Maroon locked eyes with aer for several seconds before sighing.Â
âI know, Iâm amazing,â he said, winking, âWhatâs next, mushroom?â Maroon glanced at the tome propped up against a stack of books.
âNow you just need to stir. Slowly and carefully.â Thorn picked up the spoon. They dipped it in and stirred, slowly at first but then picked up the pace. Maroon and Fawn stared at them.Â
âI think thatâs enough, dude-â Fawn began.
âNah, they arenât mixed all the way,â Thorn interrupted. Maroon stepped forward and put a hand on their friendâs shoulder.Â
âThorn, I think-â They were cut off by a loud explosion emerging from the cauldron. Maroon let out a scream and Fawn shouted his name, but then silence. Thorn coughed and waved aer hand in front of aer, attempting to clear the smoke. The classroom door slammed open, causing the prince to jump.
âThorn, what is going on?â The voice of Ailuj called out. Thorn froze.
âUh- listen, itâs not what it looks like.â A soft yellow glow appeared and sucked all the smoke into itself. The goddess walked over to Thorn.Â
âLooks like you tried to make a sleeping potion and didnât follow the motions correctly. Why were you making a sleep potion, child?â
âWell itâs almost time for exams and Iâve been having nightmares that have been keeping me up, so Maroon suggested I- wait, whereâs Maroon?â Thornâs eyes widened and the teen jumped over the desk. A large hole had been blasted through the side of the classroom, revealing the large forest just beyond the academy walls. Thorn ran to the edge and looked out.Â
âOh gods, whereâŚâ his voice trailed off as he slowly turned back to Ailuj, âTheyâre not deadâŚright?â Ailuj closed her eyes.
âNot dead, butâŚI donât know where they are.â She opened her eyes and waved her right hand. The fallen stones floated up and took their proper places in the wall. She then walked to the door and held it open.
âCome, Thorn.âÂ
âBut-âÂ
âWe will send out search parties for them immediately, but we have to go check to see if the explosion injured anyone else.â Thorn didnât move, instead staring at the once-fallen wall.
âAiluj, how come you canât find them?â The goddess was quiet for a moment before sighing.Â
âThey must have ended up in the forest. We must hurry, child. I fear they will not have much time.â A chill went down the young princeâs spine.Â
âFuckâŚokay.â
Fawn screamed to Maroonâs left as they flew through the air. The ground sped towards them, the trees blocking the view of the forest floor. A mushroom quickly grew and just barely managed to catch them before they slammed into the dirt. Fawn fell next to them, bouncing off and sliding on the ground.Â
âFuck-â she breathed, sitting up quickly. Maroon jumped up and offered a hand to her.Â
âAre you okay?â they asked. Fawn looked up at them before pushing their hand away and standing up.Â
âFine. Where are we?â Maroon placed their hands in the front pockets of their trousers. Fawn wiped the dirt off of her outfit: a pair of blue jeans and a tank top decorated with stars. The moonlight reflected slightly off of the dark green leaves, letting them see.Â
âLooks like we landed in the forest.â
âAstute observation there, Maroon.âÂ
âHey, you asked.â Fawn rolled her eyes.
âWhatever. We need to find a way back to the academy before everyone gets worried.âÂ
âI think I have an idea of how I can do that.â Maroon held a hand out and closed their eyes. A mushroom grew in front of them, unlocking the forest floor's fungal network to them. To the North was a path, one they had been on a few times during trips with Ailuj. But to the SouthâŚ
âWhatâŚâ they breathed. Fawn raised her eyebrows.
âWhat is it?â
âThereâs another person here. Down there,â Maroon pointed further into the deep woods. Fawn frowned.Â
âBut the forest is off limits to everyone without permission from Ailuj.â
âI know. Iâm going to find them.âÂ
âIâm coming too.â Maroon looked back at her.
âAre you sure?âÂ
ââCourse I am. Canât let you get all the glory for the rescue,â she replied, crossing her arms, âLead the way.â
âRightâŚyeah.â
âGo to the right?â
âNo- that was- never mind.â
Maroon peaked out from behind a tree, Fawn behind them. There sat a young man, about 18 or 19 years old, with light lavender hair and deep blue eyes. He was dressed in a torn white button-up and black trousers, similar to Maroonâs outfit (minus the light red sweater, of course). His neck and arms were wrapped in bandages, blood bleeding through them. A scar traced the top of his nose and seemed to connect his various freckles. It took a few moments but Maroonâs mind finally supplied a name.
âKhatar?â they breathed. The man spun around to look at them. He stared at them.
âMaroon? What- What are you doing here?âÂ
âIâm here too!â Fawn shouted from behind them. The 13-year-old pushed past Maroon to look at the man in front of her.Â
âI think the better question is what are you doing here?â Maroon asked, stepping forward. They stopped in front of Khatar and kneeled down, looking him in the eyes.
âAre you okay? You seem really hurt.â
âIâm fine, thanks. You guys need to get out of here.â Maroon raised an eyebrow.
âWhatâs wrong? IsâŚis something after you? Is that why you didnât go back to the academy? Youâve been missing for nearly a month!â Khatar looked down at the rock he was sitting on.Â
âNot exactly. But trust me, you donât want to be here for much longer.â
âWell, weâre not leaving without you, so you better hurry up,â Fawn stated. Khatar sighed and shook his head.
âI canât. Listen, what Iâm about to tell you two stays between us, okay? You canât tell anyone else. Especially not Ailuj.â Maroon glanced at Fawn before turning back.
âOkay.â Khatar looked at Fawn, who just nodded. The young man sighed and turned his body towards them.
âI did something that was against the rules. You see, my momâŚwell. Sheâs really sick. No one can figure out whatâs wrong with her. Not even Ailuj.â
âNow howâs that possible?â Fawn interrupted, âDoesnât she know everything?âÂ
âMy momâs from a different realm. She moved here when she was enrolled in the academy and never left. Ailuj thinks itâs something either from her home realm orâŚI donât know, like separation sickness? Either way, she canât seem to fix it.â Maroon frowned.
If itâs separation sickness, why not just send her back? The teen thought, Iâve read about this, but whereâŚ
âAnyways, I decided to take matters into my own hands,â Khatar began, crossing his arms, âIâŚlooked into my own future.â The two younger teenâs eyes widened.
âBut-â
âI know, I know. But I didnât have a choice! My mom just kept getting sicker and sicker and I justâŚI had to save her. Sheâs my world, you know?â
âSo what happened? Did you find a way to help her?â Khatar shook his head.
âI just found hundreds of thousands of possible futures, and she never survived.â
âOh.âÂ
âAnd on top of that, Ailuj found me. Punished me. Cursed me then abandoned me in the forest.â Maroonâs eyes grew even wider.
âWhat? That doesnât sound like Ailuj. She would never-â
âWell, she did. I know itâs hard to hear, but sheâsâŚnot the good person you think she is.â
âOr youâre not,â Fawn muttered. Khatar looked up at her.
âWhat?â
âHow can we know youâre telling the truth?â She added, crossing her arms, âAre you even Khatar? Surely thereâs a creature in here that can mimic people.â
âFawn-â Maroon began, but they were cut off.
âThat or youâre lying to us. So which is it?â Khatar stared at her for several seconds before closing his eyes. When he opened them, the blue was replaced with a dark purple.Â
âGo,â he said, his voice hoarse, âMy curseâŚleave. Now. Donât tell anyone what youâve seen here.â
âI think I already said weâre not leaving without you-â Fawn demanded, but Maroon stepped back and pulled her with them.
âWhat the hell are you doing, Maroon?âÂ
âBack up.â
âWhy?â
âLook.â The teen gestured to Khatar. His body twisted and contorted as blue and green scales erupted from his skin. His tattered shirt fell to the ground along with the red bandages. He grunted and moaned in agony as his face was taken over by the scales and a long tail grew behind him. Maroon and Fawn watched in horror as he turned them.Â
After a few seconds of silence, he roared loudly. Air and spit zoomed past the teenagers as he charged towards them. Maroon quickly grew a mushroom in front of them that Khatar quickly slashed through with his sharp claws. Fawn put her fingers to her mouth and whistled loudly, barely managing to pull Maroon out of the way. Two large Kikas flew over them and quickly picked the teens up by their button-up shirts. Khatar roared as they soared over the treetops. The academy loomed in the distance as the cold wind rushed past Maroon. They glanced back at the forest before closing one of their fists.
Iâll help you, Khatar. I promise.Â
Relief rushed through Thorn when Maroon and Fawn were set gently on the ground by two of Fawnâs Kikas. The prince ran toward them and pulled Maroon into a tight hug. Maroon hugged him back as Ailuj let out a quiet chuckle behind them. Fawn bowed to her, but the goddess quickly told her to rise.Â
âAre you hurt at all?â Thorn asked, taking a step back to look at their friend.
âNo, Iâm fine. Just a little bruised is all.â
âWell we can take care of that just fine,â Ailuj chimed in, stepping next to Thorn, âIâm just glad you're home safe. Both of you.âÂ
âI guess we can call off the search parties then,â Thorn joked, still holding onto Maroonâs hands. Maroon frowned.
âSearch parties? We were only gone for half an hour.â
âWe didnât know what part of the forest you landed in. Speaking of, what happened? Did you see anything cool in the forest?â Maroon looked down at the ground, sending a chill down Thornâs spine.
âNo. Nothing.â
Lie, Thorn thought to aerself, but ae didnât say anything. Fawn looked at them and sighed.
âYeah, nothing fun. Just some trees and leaves and stuff.âÂ
âOf course,â Ailuj said, a smile still on her face, âWell then, shall we go clean you two up?â The teens nodded quickly, causing her to chuckle once more.
âCome along then. You too, Thorn. I think we need to have a little chat about your potion-making technique.â The trio laughed as they walked into the academy. Maroon squeezed Thornâs hand gently, grabbing its attention.
âIs something wrong, mushroom?â he asked quietly. Maroon nodded.
âWhat is it? Are you in pain?âÂ
âNoâŚI canât tell you. I justâŚI donât know.â Thorn smiled at them and lightly squeezed their hand.
