In Northern European folklore, they are linked to agricultural traditions, Scandinavian gnomes, known as "Tomte" or "Nisse" or "Tonttu" are seen as protectors of farms and embody resilience and connection to nature. This has a much longer ancient tradition going back to Norse beings like Landvættir and Dvergr and Huldufólk.

The Slavic countries call them Domovoi. In Native cultures, The Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/Odawa) call them Memegwesi or Manitō. The Haudenosaunee call them Jogah. Shoshone call them Nimerigar. Yunwi Tsunsdi in Cherokee. Pukwudgie in Wampanoag.

The British, Scottish, Welsh, Irish have called them red caps, brownies, little people, fae, gnomes. Dahomey people call them Azizi, Zulu folklore calls them Abatwa. In Yoruba folklore you have Eloko and Egbere. Koreans call them Dokkaebi. In Maaori they're called Patupaiarehe. In Mexico and the Philippines they're called Duendes

As evidenced by their popular red caps, they were common among the Proto Indo European speaking groups, as you see these types of pointed caps, sometimes specifically red ones, later among cumans, or phrygians, or scythians or various other nomadic steppe Eurasian cultures at those times, even Basque people. One has to remember while these pointy caps look silly now, people wore those in 16th century. The gnomes were just wearing what was in fashion at that time. Specifically during the 16th century pointed caps became ridiculed as dunce caps as a form of discrimination against the nomadic headwear as these groups were not welcomed into Europe, due to being pagan. The hatred against "supernatural" beings increased along with the hatred of pagans, and the rise of Christianity

when i was a kid, we had this variety of bleeding heart plant growing in our yard:

i thought they looked like translucent fairies wearing poofy pants. i was recently reminded of this & wanted to make a translucent fairy in poofy pants.

i love how the transparent parts turned out and absolutely want to experiment more with this technique. i printed the inner skeletal parts as normal, and then printed a one-walled shell with no infill out of transparent filament. i cut the shell open in the back and slid the skeleton inside. the outer layer of the head doesn't have eyes sockets, which makes the eyes hazy.
