funny to me that the ilyaroz characterization is that he’s like a playboy casanova or whatever. dude saw ONE rosy cheeked nineteen year old and was like i have to consistently give him the best dick of his life. Okay I know we can’t shut up about Connor and Hudson and their micro expression acting BUT THIS ONE I HAVENT LOOKED AT YET OKAY
Because the progression of Ilya before, during, and after Scott and Kip’s kiss is such a perfect “show don’t tell” that you can hear the expressions on his face speaking
GIFs 1 and 2, Pre-Kiss: this is classic Ilya reading a room, but the way his eyes are darting around, it’s like he’s confused because I’m reading the vibe but that can’t be right, because that’s impossible. There’s no way. Two men aren’t able to be together in public.
GIFs 3 and 4, Kiss Happens: okay so this kills me because Ilya looks so, so young suddenly. This is the young Ilya growing up in Russia who realized he liked boys, too, getting a glimpse into the now-possible future of living fully as himself. He’s watching a new world open up with an impossible dream coming to life, this is everything from the storybook romances that I never thought I could have, but maybe I could kiss the Prince too?
GIFs 5 and 6: the camera swings around Ilya too because his world’s just tilted on its access, and now his face says it all: I know now that this can happen, so I am going to make it happen. ilya had wanted to touch shane's freckles like this for years at this point; gently, without rush, but with reverence. it took shane getting hurt, them having to hide in the confines of a hospital room, and shane being out of his mind and hurt, for ilya to feel safe enough, scared enough-- to touch him this gently without worry of wondering eyes.
The way Connor carried this so perfectly, it feels like in just a moment, just a gesture, we understand Ilya’s feelings for Shane so much more clearly than Shane (or Ilya himself) can. He’s spent how many years touching Shane’s face and avoiding these freckles, but right now he’s still lost in that lingering, horrible knowledge that he could have lost these beautiful freckles without ever touching them, and this moment—which is truly the story of them—he can’t help himself.
It’s such a mix of reverence, affection, and the gentleness Ilya has in spades that he never feels safe expressing except with Shane, because Shane is safety personified. It’s what he tries so hard to not want, or at least to hide that he wants, because Shane is Ilya’s Midas, this golden boy whose touch transforms him.

Okay but I headcanon that Ilya’s longterm petty grudge against Hayden Pike (pre The Long Game) actually started much earlier than Shane ever realizes??
Like, Hayden is so clearly from a well-adjusted, close-knit family, and let’s say that for him, saying “I love you” to his loved ones might even be a daily thing. Now, from experience as a gay autistic gremlin, I can attest that even as uncomfy as he was at first with it, Shane would have gotten used to saying “I love you” back to Hayden early on (because Hayden looks out for him, makes sure he’s safe, this is his friend who’s like family) and Ilya—sure, Ilya randomly throws out an “I love you” to everyone and their cousin, but he knows Shane does not.
So the first time their hookup gets interrupted by a phone call from Hayden having a stressed mother hen moment at the hotel of BEDS EMPTY NO NOTE and Shane affectionately signs off with “yep, love you too, buddy,” Ilya’s specialized Hollander Behavioral Antennae are alert.
Who. Is. This.
And Ilya will never even admit it to himself, but the main reason he’s scared by the very idea of Hollander having Hayden Pike as a lover is that Pike is only a decent defenseman—he’s not even that good of a player, maybe has a mid-range skillset, and yet Hollander, his Hollander, one of the best of the best, who demands perfection from himself and teases Ilya for a missed goal, Hollander still likes this mediocre guy so much that he picks up calls from him while with Ilya and then, then he says I love you to Mr. Just-Okay Defenseman? What does this guy even have that—never mind.
Anyway. Ilya’s fine with it. Really. He knows—because Hollander’s talked about him—that Hayden’s just a friend. Married, too, with children. And who cares who else Hollander fucks, anyway? Not Ilya, for sure.
Except maybe from then on, Ilya chirps Hayden Pike a little more often. Checks him a little harder. Just to get a reaction out of Shane Hollander, and maybe in the hopes that Pike will say or do something Ilya can use to get rid of him. No such luck, Hollander’s friend is as boring as he is. “You suck” oooh so scary, Pike.
It’s only when Ilya sends out the wedding invitation to The Pike Family that he feels completely at peace with Hayden Pike.
Not that he’s going to stop messing with him, though. Way too much fun.

I’m still blown away by how they manage to make it seem like the characters aged with just some tricks of hair, makeup, and clothing, but also the actors are involved??? I love how the mannerisms and energy age, and here we see the difference in intimacy over time—first kiss versus ten years of kissing. Some things change, some stay the same.
