Rudolph Valentino was born on May 6, 1895. The Italian born actor immigrated to the United States in 1913 at age 18, and after appearing in supporting roles in films for several years, he became established as a Hollywood star with the movie, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921). His next film, The Sheik (1921) confirmed his reputation as Hollywood's leading Latin lover. He appeared in over 40 films until his untimely death at age 31 in 1926. His death was mourned the world over by his many female fans.

And the strange man from that evening stepped on the countess's heart like a marble statue. Right on her heart! But it did not burst. She let the figure do as it pleased. It came and went and came over her as it pleased. Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler by Norbert Jacques, Chapter 10
