You cannot have one without the other. For their to be an idea of conserving something (culture, traction, ect) you need something that exists to open the gate (allowing changes in society like acceptance of lgbt, other religions/people, or updated rights).

They literally need the other for their view point to be argued and that’s something that I think the Netflix serie then references. We see in “Washingtonia” that both Muneer and Khalaf are very sad when they don’t have the other to argue with. The entire reason Muneer gets into K-Pop is because the BTS fans are angry and arguing with the sports fans. Since they stopped arguing over their viewpoints of society, they moved on to argue on recent events (BTS playing at a sports area), and at the end of the episode they argue over trees to plant (one for culture vs one for practicality). These are all opposites and you can’t have opposites without multiple things (which leads back to my original point).

[SIDENOTE: I’m going off memory but I think Khalaf was the one arguing for a practical tree over a cultural one which I find ironic since he seems more like I type to want to conserve his culture]

Like mentioned before, their bickering is obviously fun to watch but also humorous moments where they are similar in a strange way is funny. In a removed episode Muneer heads to the airports and has a talk with Khalaf before he would leave Saudi Arabia because he doesn’t like the society (?)

[SIDENOTE: this banned episode was all in Arabic and I only know English so this is all based off visuals] Anyway- when Saudi Arabia turns into a more open and accepting place Muneer decides to move back which funnily enough he meets Khalaf at the airport and they talk as Khalaf is now leaving for the same reason Muneer originally did. A fun joke is that at the end of the episode Khalaf is in America with the Amish.

One last thing is how they can still get along and talk, they don’t hate each other. They can have civil conversations so they aren’t enemies or anything so that opens up the door to different interpretations of their relationship.
