note - closer to 5 years in, I miscalculated when I was drawing. Anna, with no birth control and 2 husbands and no self control, ends up with more little ones than she bargained for. She doesn't mind but its because she has the privilege of living in a "village" that went dark as quickly as it could, hiding from FEDRA and everyone else. She has Sofi, Emma and Eva and another little one on the way.

At age 10 Frankie decides that he wants to try and follow Eddie on one of his treks from the camp to the city, but knowing that if he gets caught following him too early, he trails far behind. Too far. He gets caught near the city, and FEDRA takes him to their orphanage which genuinely just functions to train kids to join FEDRA once they're grown. an Anti-FEDRA faction attacks and takes a bunch of the kids to create their own child soldier squads. Frankie gets stuck killing both infected and humans until he's 13, when he's sent to kill a local smuggling group thats keeping people fed and content and less willing to revolt...only to find that its his dad. Eddie immediately takes him (and his friend) back to the summer camp where everyone had presumed Frankie dead, but the kid isn't the same anymore.

After an attack from FEDRA, where the military swooped in and took their food and supplies, the Takahashi camp is fully on edge. Benny steps in with a plan to keep a "moat" of sorts, where they keep infected caged in the areas where people would attempt to enter. Most of the family is completely against this on multiple levels, but after consulting with Anna's friend Maritza they come up with the plan to remove the infected's teeth so that the threat of infection from bites goes down significantly. They study the infected through the years as they keep up this 'guard dog' wall.

top to bottom:

Benny sitting with his nephew Frankie and niece Sofi, taking notes of everything going on in both the city and the country at large. Right now, his 3 brothers, cousin and their partners/children have holed up at the family dojo, as his parents live the most central of all of them. His mother Midori and father Hideyoshi have decided, with pretty much unanimous agreement, that the best plan of action is to leave the city, because the chaos is beginning to hit Texas levels. Benny being the only one with military training is in charge of tracking the FEMA-National Guard group that will eventually become FEDRA in a year or so. (corner notes are ages)

Anna tries to convince her and Tom's husband Eddie to leave with them. Unfortunately Eddie is a city boy, born and bred, and is having a difficult time wanting to leave his home. Eddie and his mother are very much of the "i was born in this hole and i'm gonna DIE in this hole" mentality. Eddie isn't opposed at all to his family going somewhere safe though. next drawing is Tom and Eddie listening to Tom's parents explain their reasoning for leaving, as well as the plan.

Eddie joins the Takahashi family up to the outskirts of the city, and then heads back. Anna understands; if not for her 2 kids and another on the way, she would also be in the city trying to help take it back. She left her job as a doctor purely to save her kids, not because she wouldn't put herself on the line for other people.

Benny has struggled most his life with identity that he didn't understand. After many years of acting out, he finally took his parents' advice to join the military to get "cleaned up", but it didn't help much for his mental state. After the collapse of society, and spending his days protecting his family, he feels....free. Life is difficult but he's got purpose.

You know that thing some artists do when you see someone out and about - maybe you're people watching, maybe you just saw someone striking - and you gently just pluck little details about those strangers and go, "This is now on my character, let's go." Well I did that for Frankie here when I was designing him; I saw this pretty girl at CESCO (DMV? Where you get your driver's license and other car related documents) and noticed these pretty scars on her shoulder that crept up a bit onto her back, smooth white splotches that I'd have loved to ask about if it wasn't extremely insensitive and rude (sometimes I wish curiosity about people had less connotations of ignorance and sometimes hatred; questions about things often come from people being rude, so anyone who is approaching with child-like curiosity just seems rude and mean. I get it. I used to get asked a lot about the things that made me stand out from everyone else and sometimes you just want to be a person instead of a curiosity. Getting singled out as different can be terrible in some cases. Other times I appreciated it cause I wouldnt have talked to people otherwise. But that's just my experience). But since I was designing Frankie at the time I instead applied those scars to his design.

Cue now, three years later, as I reminisced over all of this and it suddenly hit me that the shape and smoothness of the 'scars' looked more like vitiligo than scars. So this detail about my character, these scars on his shoulder, were probably based on that instead of actual scars.
