Itâs not that Wally doesnât want to talk to Lucas. He does! Lucas has been fantastic. They havenât met up again since the conference in Jubilife City, but theyâve talked often enough. Theyâre⌠friends. Or at least, Wally likes to think so. He doesnât have a lot of experience with friends that arenât pokemon. He used to but⌠obviously he wasnât that good at it.
(Thinking about Brendon makes him sad in a old, achy way.)
He doesnât think he needs to have a lot of experience to know that youâre not supposed to lie to your friends, though. And he is, lying that is. Heâs been lying for months now, ever since he returned home and joined Team Aqua. Now heâs squirreled away in a little hidey hole in Po Town, as private as it gets around Team Skullâs base, putting off his and Lucasâ weekly phone call. The same way he has been for the past two weeks.
So no, itâs not that he doesnât want to talk to Lucas, he just⌠doesnât want to talk to Lucas. Wally sighs in frustration, staring down at the glassy smooth surface of his phone. Whether or not Wally WANTS to talk to Lucas, doesnât matter, itâs no longer an option not to call him, because now itâs an assignment. Call the pokemon professorâs assistant, find out what, if anything, he knows about how the pokemon are being affected by the odd changes in the weather, and report back.
Itâs all kind of sad that heâs waited until he was ordered to call his friend to actually talk to him.
Wally settles himself more comfortably in his chosen hide away, firming up his resolve. Heâs an adult, he can call his friend without having a nervous meltdown over it. Without giving himself anymore time to stall he selects Lucasâ number and sets up a camcall. His little portrait in the corner looks sick.
âHey Lucas! Long⌠long time no see?â
There arenât a whole lot of people Lucas considers friends. Dawn and Barry are alright, but theyâre busy. And he canât exactly blame them for that. Theyâve got plenty on their plates keeping them bouncing all over the place. He usually has enough to keep himself busy, which hasnât changed much since heading to Kanto. It just makes everyone else a little further out of reach.Â
And then thereâs the friends he doesnât quite know where he is with. Sam is... something. Lucas doesnât know whatâs going on there, he doesnât want to think about it. Thatâs complicated and uncomfortable. But then thereâs Wally. And heâs pretty sure theyâre friends, but lately... well, lately everything feels distant, so maybe itâs not a surprise that he canât quite figure out whatâs going on there either.
Itâs not that Lucas likes talking to people. Usually, itâs one of his least favorite things to do, but... even he gets a little tired of the quiet from time to time.
Wallyâs supposed to call soon. Lucas half expects a message telling him itâs going to have to wait, or that today doesnât work. Which is alright. It seems like Wallyâs been pretty busy the last few weeks.
So when his phone suddenly rings in his bag, Lucas falls off his chair and thumps onto the floor. Scrambling, he digs through his bag, covering the floor of the guest room with pens and candy bars. He snatches up his phone as soon as he uncovers it and hops up onto his borrowed bed to answer.
âHi.â He should say more than that. âYeah, guess itâs been a little while. Howâre you going? How are you--howâs it going. Uh. I mean. Whatâs up with you?â
