â YOU MUST NOT know me very well. â, evelyn replied, a skeptical laugh falling from her lips. then again, she found it easy to spend time with sarah. maybe it was just the girl that softened evelyn up a bit⌠didnât make her feel as if she had to keep her walls up all the time and be wary of her intentions. as sarah talked about her current case, evelyn nodded as she listened intently. offering the brunette her full attention was the least she could do after talking her ear off earlier. â thatâs really sad â has she met the family yet ? â, evie wondered, frowning as she tilted her head to the side.
âYeah, sheâs been living with them for about a year now,â Sarah explained. Her heart truly bled for these kids, wishing she could show them the brighter future she knew they would one day have. But it was hard to trust the good when there had been so much bad in their lives sometime. âThese foster kids, sometimes they take a while to really trust someone, understandably...all you can do is keep showing up and following through on promises, theyâll eventually come around.â

âAnd you are all better I see!â Eliza gave Sarah a smile. She was happy that Sarah was up and walking again. If she could have, she would have stayed with her the whole time. But there was no way Eliza was going to miss any of her shifts. Money was tight and there was no room to not show up for work. âI work part time at a flower shop. The owner is super nice and usually gives me extra shifts when Iâm in a pinch. But Iâm glad we finally crossed paths!â She gave Sarah a smile. It was sweet that she came to seek her out. No one had ever done that before for her. âDonât mention it. Iâm just happy to see you are better. Do you want anything? I can make us something and we can catch up. Itâs on the house.â
âDoing much better, thanks.â Sarah grinned, a slight blush tinting her cheeks as she leaned across the counter. The emotional trauma still stuck with her, but Eliza didnât need to know that. She still hadnât stepped in the ring since it happened, and she wasnât sure it would happen again soon...or even ever. âFlower shop? Wow, thatâs cool. Which one? This motherâs day, Iâm coming to you guys.â Sarah promised as she tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. âOh, I mean...Iâll pay. Hell, I should be paying for you after staying with me. But yeah, Iâd like that.â Sarah could hear her heart pounding in her ears as Eliza smiled at her. âLetâs see...Iâll just have a regular coffee, two creams.â Sarah ordered, looking around the coffee shop. It seemed pretty empty...good. She didnât want to take Eliza away from her job. âSo, is the flower shop the fun job while this pays the bills or..?â
âYeah, I donât see why not. I donât think thereâs a venue in London we havenât played at by now. We opened there a couple times, but weâre not headliner material just yet. June 27th works for me, though. Iâll have to talk to the other guys about it, but I doubt theyâd say no. Ollie Choi. Nice to meet you, Sarah Jacobs.â
âUgh, you are seriously saving my ass here.â Sarah grinned, shaking his hand. âThe band we booked ended up canceling last minute and weâve been trying to find a replacement.â She growled, shaking her head. Some people could be so inconsiderate. âSo, do you think there any accommodations you need? I mean, youâll talk to the director of events, but like...anything I should warn them about?â
ANOTHER DRAG OF HIS CIGARETTE as he watched the girl, his gaze as normally intense as usual, he was slowly losing interest in whatever was going on. still, there was something familiar in her mannerisms as she jotted down this address. âoh shit, heavy stuff.â jd said with a shake of his head, he kindly enough blew the smoke in the opposite direction, âyou always got that look on your face or am i just special?â he asked with a smirk, flicking the ash of his cigarette on the ground, listening to her story of this family, bitterly in his head adding âat least there is a motherâ to himself from a voice in the back of his mind. rolling his eyes a bit as she tried again with her phone, he sighed and motioned down the street, âi can show you where it is, as long as you donât keep fucking glaring at me like i ran over your dog.âÂ
âIâm a social worker. We pretty much live in âheavy stuffâ.â Sarah replied, still concentrating on her phone. A message from a co-worker had just alerted her to the fact that the family hadnât been seen for a few days. Shit...âWhat look?â Sarah asked, finally looking up at him with a confused look on her face. Had it been that obvious? Sheâd never had a great poker face. âItâs not about you, Iâm just worried okay?â There was an edge to her voice, but she sighed and shook her head. âSorry. Yeah, that would be great. Thanks.â Pocketing her phone, Sarah gathered her stuff as she followed the man out the door. âIâm Sarah, by the way. Thanks for showing me around.â She hoped her voice sounded friendly enough, but her heart was pounding as she thought about the Keyhoe family.â
âListen,â she took a deep breath, the air coming from her nose making a slight hum as she looked back. âKids donât really hang around this hotel much anymore. I mean, for starters, my old man literally looks like the boogie man so Iâm pretty sure theyâd get a wink of that and-â Nina whistled with her lips, a short laugh coming after. âBut the lounge upstairs is pretty easy to get into if you want to take a minute and check it out,â Ninaâs shoulders shrugged. There was something about kids not wanting to stick to one place that always made her soften up, teeth digging into her bottom lip. âI think I can risk ten minutes.â
Sarah hadnât planned on saying anything, but she couldnât help but agree with the young woman. The hotel looked like something out of a Tim Burton movie. âAre you sure? I donât want to get you in trouble.â She insisted, but she did need to find Alice before the girl who was a flight risk got too far.  âBut it would really help me out, thanks.â She offered her a smile. âIâm Sarah, by the way. I really appreciate your help. I promise Iâm legit too, I can show you my work ID if that helps?â A strange woman looking for a kid that wasnât hers always raised suspicion, as it should.

â IT DOES, DOESNâT it ? â, evelyn repeated, words falling from her lips in the form of a sigh as she dropped her gaze to her lap. the woman had never been one to get things off her chest. she preferred to just⌠keep it all inside and talk about it to herself, in private. the feeling of bothering people too dominant. but sarah was right, it had relieved her a bit to be able to tell someone else. â candidly ? if anything, it was driven by frustration and a complete lack of social skills. â, the brunette said, skeptical laugh falling from her lips as she shook her head. as she was asked about the case, evelyn waved her hand in a dismissive motion. â itâs going alright â itâs not a hard one, to be honest. â, which was true, evie sure had had far more challenging cases in her career. â how are you ? weâve been talking about me for far too long now. â.
Sarah shook her head, smiling. âI think youâre a lot better at all that than you think. At least, from my perspective.â Evelyn was easy to talk to. Granted, they hadnât delved too deep into anything beyond work, but Sarah appreciated getting the honest truth from the woman. âMe? Oh...nothing too new, Iâm afraid. Iâve been working with this girl who has a family that wants to adopt her, but I think the idea of such a big change is scary for her. She doesnât trust it yet.â Sarah explained, shaking her head. âI think sheâs afraid to let herself be hopeful because it might all go away.â Sarah explained with a shrug. âBut I think this couple is serious about wanting her to be a part of their family. I just wish sheâd trust them after all theyâve been through.âÂ
âTrust me, I know my way around these streets-â her eyes rolled, fingers clasping onto the strap of her bag for a moment. Truth be told, she didnât enjoy spending much time explaining things or showing people around, but there was a look in their eyes that she couldnât turn away from. Teeth dug into her bottom lip, shrugging. âFine. Tell me where youâre going and Iâll get you there quick. Then I gotta get back for my shift-â Nina nodded to the hotel with a small smile.
Sarah laughed, shaking her head. âNo, if you donât have time...I wouldnât want to keep you from your work.â She sighed as she looked down the street. Being a social worker, one part of her job included tracking down kids who didnât exactly want to be found. Sheâd been working with Alice for a few years now and whenever she was about to go to a different foster home, she always disappeared to process her feelings. âJust, let me know if you see her around? Hereâs my number in case you see her.â Sarah passed the manager a card as she drummed her fingers on the side of the desk. âCâmon, Alice...we talked about this.â
sarah was good and pedro knew that she loved boxing but she was letting what happened to her stop her. and just like if it was one of his lost boys, pete was done letting sarah throw away something she enjoyed. his eyes rolled at her response, arms crossing over his chest. âmy hand is still healing so weâll have to go soft anyway. come on⌠you know elise is one of the few little girls that boxes too and she looks up to you and likes when youâre there.â some kids stayed after class if their parents werenât home or something, often leaving him and friends at the gym later with the stragglers. âat least come work out with us. you donât have to get in the ring yet.â
Oh, of course, he had to bring up Elise...Sarahâs soft spot for the younger boxer was certainly the way to get her back out there. As she looked up to glare at Pedro, Sarah couldn't hold too much of a grudge against her teacher. He was just looking after her was all and although it was frustrating now, Sarah knew sheâd be thanking him down the line...âYou really know how to pull at my heartstrings, do you know that?â She smirked, her eyes narrowing as she sighed in defeat. After all, it was just working out...right? âJust give me a second to get changed. Tell Elise Iâll be right there...â
LUCKILY, SARAH WAS an understanding person. not that she would care ( much ) when she scared others away â she was fine by herself. had grown used to complaining to no ears but her own. still, it was nice that the other had decided to listen. â itâs fine. just sending it out in the universe helps greatly with frustration, i have come to conclude. â, the woman said, offering sarah a small, slightly awkward smile. as she was asked about how the rest of the story unfolds, evie shook her head. â they just stared at me and agreed to get back to the case. â, she explained, lifting her shoulders in a nonchalant manner. obviously, they had not seen her comment coming.
âAbsolutely. Getting things off your chest helps more than people realize, I think.â Sarah replied, taking a cautious sip of her hot drink. She grimaced as the tea burned her tongue, but did her best not to think about it. âSounds like it worked, then.â Sarah pointed out, her speech a little thick as her tongue lost most of itâs feeling due to the tea. âSometimes I wish I could talk as candidly...â She admitted, thinking of her tougher kids. Sure, it was just a defense mechanism as their world drastically changed while there was nothing they could do, but it didnât mean Sarah was above wanting to scream at the top of her lungs. âHow is the case going? I mean, if youâre allowed to tell me at all...â

      â ⌠SO I TOLD them, â no â i donât have any feelings any longer. i sold them on ebay just a couple of weeks ago. â. i mean, some people are just begging for a cry session while i am a lawyer. if they want to have a cry, they should go see a friend or a therapist. â, evelyn rambled, shaking her head as she let out a frustrated groan. evelyn loved her job â it gave her great satisfaction. but some of her clients truly knew how to get under her skin. the woman had always been terrible with emotions â both showing them and reacting to the display of them from other people. she just wanted to be professional, though she was well aware her professionalism was taken for carelessness and a lack of empathy sometimes. it just happened, and she had accepted that she just⌠seemingly wasnât capable of tapping into the spectrum of human emotions. â iâm sorry â you were saying ? â, the brunette eventually asked, blinking a couple of times as she snapped out of it, remembering that she had interrupted someone. { @musicalstartersâ }
Sarah had met the lawyer at the courthouse a few times. While theyâd never worked on the same case, the blonde was nice to talk to and always had great ideas about tough cases Sarah got stuck on. But now it was Sarahâs turn to listen and offer advice. As someone who had to learn to express complex emotions in a healthy way due to her job, she remembered how frustrating it was when she was still learning. Talking to people while they were crying had proved to be especially difficult. âItâs okay, nothing much really...Iâm sorry youâre feeling frustrated.â The brunette offered, taking a moment to swirl around her tea bag in her cup as she mulled over Evelynâs conflict. âWhat did they say to that? That you...âsold your emotions on ebayâ?â The corner of Sarahâs lip twitched as she tried not to smile. She loved Evelynâs way with words.

AS SHE LOCKED HER stare right into his icy blue hues, he raised a brow as he flicked his cigarette a bit to ash it, head falling to the side. what she wanted from him, he was unsure, but for some odd reason, she did look familiar. not like he possibly hooked up with her at some point and forgot, but there was something about her that reminded him of someone that he couldnât put his finger on. shrugging it off, he watched her scroll through her phone, taking another drag from his cigarette as she did so. brows coming together in a crease, he glanced behind him, heâd lived in london for a while not. âer, right, adler street is right past my auto shop, five blocks up i think?â the scottish native explained as she listed off the people, shrugging again before exhaling the smoke from his lung, âi dunno those folks, are you babysittinâ or something?â
Okay, why was he looking at her like that? Sarah felt as if she were staring down a snake who was looking at his next meal. It was completely unsettling, the way he was looking at her with his eyes staring into her skull...but Sarah had a job to do. She couldnât leave this family hanging just because she felt uncomfortable. âAdler Street, yeah that sounds right...â Sarah murmured, taking a pen from where sheâd stuck it in her ponytail and clearly wrote down the correct address, taking the time to nearly print the words so she wouldnât get confused the next time. âNo, Iâm their social worker.â She explained as she glared at him, waving a hand in front of her nose as she wafted the smoke away. âMom has been on unemployment for a few months now, Iâm just trying to make sure that they have what they need to get by.â Sarah murmured, taking out her phone and updating her map app, but it still was misplacing her position. âUgh, damn it.â She swore, closing out of and opening the app once more to see if it would help. Nothing.
Ollie turned to face the girl. He felt dizzy from how fast he spun, still high off the adrenaline of performing. âHi! Thanks, Iâm glad you had a good time. I would love to! Iâve never done something like that, but I think it sounds great. When would that be? Weâre booked for a couple weekends, but weâre still mostly free.â
âReally?â Sarah hadnât expected him to agree so quickly, but it she was happy he did. âOh my god, great! I mean, weâd love to have you guys. Itâs gonna be in a month, June 27th at the Palladium. Have you guys played there before?â She wouldnât be surprised if they have, the bigger venue hosted a bunch of local talent. âIâm Sarah, by the way. Sarah Jacobs.â
