I know I JUST KNOW that Peter owns one of these but never uses it. May probably gifted it to him as a joke and he uses it just sometimes, when the household mate isn't there because May brough it to her shift or something. It's the one he drinks from in those endless nights between textbooxs, in the privacy of his room.

I don't think Tony is the type of man that drinks mate. He's not particularly akin to the culture, the idea of walking around with a thermos everywhere and sharing a "metal straw" with everyone. Besides, his dad was really into it and maybe sometimes he pressured him into drinking the first one (the worst one) so he grows up to hate the taste. Sometimes he drinks it by himself, just sometimes, to see if the years changed something. He never drinks in group, which only makes him feel more stranged from the culture.

I headcanon Pepper gifted him one of those engraved ones, with the same sentence on the reactor she gave him on the first movie. He doesn't use it.

Pepper doesn't drink mate at all. Like maybe she will accept ONE out of courtesy but you can tell by her face she hated it.

I headcanon that when Peter gets comfortable enough around Tony he begins to bring the household mate with him. It's one of the older types. The ones made out of rough metal with some dents around it from all the years it has endured. It's probably a heirloom from Ben. If not the only one Peter has from him.

He obviously asked Tony before hand with a text, making sure he was okay with him bringing it down to the lab.

Tony is... —Well, he hesitated. He obviously doesn't think Peter will drop it and make a mess, no, it's not that. Its just...

Tony is awkward around the topic. Sharing saliva, drinking from the same place— from the heirloom of someone else. (To those who dont know, the owner of the mate it's the one who serves the drink to the others. They're also in charge of keeping it good ((as in taste, temperature, etc)) it's one turn each. Meaning Peter drinks, then brews again, then he passes it to Tony, or the next person to his right, if they were more people.)

Its weirdly intimate to him. He doesn't wrap his head around it, he can't even understand who nobody else seems weirded out by it, how's so wildly accepted.

Peter does the routine. He drinks the first mate (for those who dont know: the first mate it's the worst one. It's the most bitter, can be "dirty" and hot, it can scald your tongue, but it's costume that the owner (Cebador) does that little "sacrifice" for everyone else. Giving the first mate to someone else is declaration of bad faith towards them and overall bad manners.)

Anyways. He aims to drink the first one as soon as Peter serves it, self depreciation and learned nature. Peter laughs softly, even a little confused by the action, and takes it from Tony's hand. Peter drinks the first, the second, and in the third brew he passes it to Tony.

Tony is... Surprised? It doesn't taste so bad now.

(It's because the third one it's when it gets better and actually enjoyable)

(He never drank a third, he always gave up on the second one when he tried to drink by himself.)

(And it feels weird, weirdly good, for Peter to feel proud over it. Over Tony.)
