i think what makes tumblr great now is that nobody gives a shit? Like, there is NOTHING to be gained from being on here except the pure joy of making stuff for people and with people?
If you're on twitter or threads or reddit, and you say, "Oh, I had a terrible experience with Delta Airlines. They canceled my flight and then booked me into a hotel room with a stranger," and you tag Delta, there's a chance Delta Airlines itself will come and apologize. Maybe even give you some SkyMiles or something.
But if you complain about a terrible airline experience on tumblr, all you can hope for is that someone might come along and write slash fiction about two guys who get booked into the same hotel room by Delta Airlines.
You can't gain social capital by being here. Nobody knows who you even ARE because your user name is, like, some randomly generated phrase or else an obscure reference to hockey sex books.
I'm not saying it's perfect, of course. It's a super toxic hellsite that eats the ashes of its former self to survive. But it beats twitter any day, and not only because twitter is owned by a raving mad white supremacist fuckchild.

how do you do, fellow Creatives™

i find it very difficult to function online.
but then again i also fine it rather difficult to function offline.
it's the to be or not to be of our time.
My cat died so I haven’t been posting sorry love u
Why does anyone even care who you're fucking?
I thought you lived in America, the land of the free, home of the brave, or does that freedom exclude anything but guns?
No clue. Those types of people are disgusting. I’m not the kind of person who bases opinions, judgment and hatred on the way that someone looks.
I surround myself with people who are kind, caring, and are like minded. So to see that kind of hate is disappointing and a bit of a wake up call. I forget that people can be so hateful towards others based off of purely nothing except the way that they look. It’s sad and they should be ashamed of themselves and really think about what they want in life.

A message from a few of the trans staff at Tumblr & Automattic:
We want trans people, and LGBTQ+ people broadly, to feel welcome on Tumblr, in part because we as trans people at Tumblr and Automattic want it to be a space where we ourselves feel included. We want to feel like this is a platform that supports us and fights for our safety. Tumblr is made brighter and more vibrant by your presence, and the LGBTQ+ folks who help run it are fighting all the time for this, for you, internally.Â
A few days ago, Matt Mullenweg (the CEO of Automattic, Tumblr’s parent company) responded to a user’s ask about an account suspension in a way that negatively affected Tumblr’s LGBTQ+ community. We believe that Matt's response to this ask and his continued commentary has been unwarranted and harmful. Tumblr staff do not comment on moderation decisions as a matter of policy for a variety of reasons—including the privacy of those involved, and the practicalities of moderating thousands of reports a day. The downside of this policy is that it is very easy for rumors and incorrect information about actions taken by our Trust & Safety team to spread unchecked. Given this, we want to clarify a few different pieces of this situation:
The reality of predstrogen's suspension was not accurately conveyed, and made it seem like we were reaching for opportunities to ban trans feminine people on the platform. This is not the case. The example comment shared in the post linked above does not meet our definition of a realistic threat of violence, and was not the deciding factor in the account suspension.
Matt thereafter failed to recognize the harm to the community as a result of this suspension. Matt does not speak on behalf of the LGBTQ+ people who help run Tumblr or Automattic, and we were not consulted in the construction of a response to these events.
Last year, the "mature" and "sexual themes" community labels were erroneously applied to some users' posts. An outside team of contractors tasked with applying community labels to posts were responsible for this larger trend of mislabeling trans-related content. When our Trust & Safety team discovered this issue (thanks largely to reports from the community), we removed the contracted team’s ability to apply community labels and added more oversight to ensure it does not happen again. In the Staff post about this, LGBTQ+ staff pushed to be more transparent but were overruled by leadership. The termination of a contractor mentioned in the original ask response was for an unrelated incident which was incorrectly attributed to this case. We regret that the mislabeling ever happened, and the negative impact it has had on the trans community on Tumblr.Â
Transition timelines are not against our community guidelines, and weren’t a factor considered by the moderation team when discussing suspensions and subsequent appeals. We do not take action against content that is related to transitioning or trans bodies unless it includes violations of the Community Guidelines.
When it comes to the experience of trans folks on Tumblr encountering transphobic content, and interacting with bigoted users, we understand and share your frustrations. Tumblr’s policies, and Automattic’s policies, are written to ensure freedom of speech and expression. We prohibit harassment as defined in our Community Guidelines, but we know that this policy falls short of protecting users from the wider scope of harmful speech often used against LGBTQ+ and other marginalized people.
Going forward, Tumblr is taking the following actions:
Prioritizing anti-harassment features that will empower users to more effectively protect themselves from harassment.
Building more internal tooling for us as Staff to proactively identify and mitigate instances of harassment.
Reviewing which of the tags frequently used by the trans community are blocked, and working to make them available next week.
We’re sorry for how this all transpired, and we’re actively fighting to make our voices heard more and prevent something like this from happening again in the future. We know firsthand that having to deal with situations like this as a Tumblr user is difficult, particularly as a member of an already frequently targeted and harassed community. We know it will take time to regain your trust, and we’re going to put in the work to rebuild it.
We appreciate the space we have been given to express our concerns and dissent, and we are thankful that Matt’s (and Automattic’s) strong commitment to freedom of expression has facilitated it.
We will continue to fight to make Tumblr safe for us all.
— This statement was authored by multiple trans employees of Tumblr and Automattic.

On the Android app, we’ve removed the dashboard welcome popup for new users so they can get to finding and curating great content sooner.
If you have a custom domain through tumblr, we’ve now given you the option to transfer it away to a new registrar.
To help us act quickly on abusive content, the reporting forms now require a link to the post, image, or comment that is being reported.
We are removing the “Recently followed” label that is presented in the post header section, from posts that are displayed on the following feed after you follow a new blog.

We fixed a bug on web where the activity page wasn’t highlighting new items when you navigated there from the account drop-down.
On web, we’ve removed the link to this blog from the Account menu. It didn’t really belong there, and we’re trying to tidy that menu up to make your blogs easier to manage.

🌟 New
We’ve launched a new badge you can earn for viewing 601 or more posts on Tumblr in a day!
We’ve also launched the new activity view redesign on iOS, the same as what we built on web.
On desktop web, we’re running an experimental new version of the site navigation, which some users are seeing. This is a big change! Please send any constructive feedback you have to Support as “Feedback”. We’re reading through every piece of this feedback.
We’re also experimenting with a new design refresh for the direct messaging conversation window on web. Please send in feedback about that as well if you have any!
Also, we’re experimenting with new additions to the For You feed that aim to help get exposure to blogs that aren’t getting as much attention and engagement as more established blogs.
You can now edit posts with polls in them, and you can remove the poll, but you can’t edit the poll options themselves after the post has been created.
You can now upload WebP images in posts.

Fixed a bug in the post editor that was allowing multiple native videos to be uploaded in the same post, and in reblogs, which could cause errors and the post being lost.
🚧 Ongoing
We’re aware that posts have been marked with a “Mature” community label incorrectly, and the appeals process failed. We’re working to resolve these issues ASAP and ensure it does not happen again. We’re truly sorry about this, it’s not acceptable for us to mess up this process.
There is a bug in the Android app causing it to crash if certain gifts are earned. We have a fix for this coming in the next version of the Android app.
We’re aware of a bug in the activity view in the iOS app which is duplicating the blog name in the activity text. We have a fix coming in the next app version here, too.
🌱 Upcoming
We’re working to add the ability to report ads specifically because they contain flashing images, so we can take action on them faster.
