generative AI literally makes me feel like a boomer. people start talking about how it can be good to help you brainstorm ideas and iโm like oh youโre letting a computer do the hard work and thinking for you???
There are many difficult things that were replaced with technology, and it wasn't a bad thing. Washing machine replaces washing clothes by hand. Nothing wrong with that. Spinning wheel replaces drop spindle. Nothing wrong with that.
Generative AI replaces thinking. The ability to think for yourself will always be important. People that want to control and oppress you want to limit your ability to think for yourself as much as possible, but continuing to practice it allows you to resist them.

"Queer-coding" is only useful for a narrow range of media and it'd be great if we could stop using it for literally everything
Here's my problem with it:
The term originated to discuss negative media depictions of cultural stereotypes for LGBTQ people in the United States. It is inherently tied to the conditions of media censorship at play in the USA during the 1900s, with the Hays Code restricting depictions of anything it deemed "immoral."
Now, for whatever reason, people are using it to refer to literally anything they see as "kind of gay."
The term begins with the premise that making the audience see the character as queer is the creator's explicit intention. The creator knows the stereotype, you know the stereotype, so they are using the stereotype to convey to you something they can't say outright.
However, you can see how this goes awry, right?
The second we cross language, cultural, or even generational lines, this gets messy.
What traits are deemed queer? What behaviors or characteristics are seen as gay? The reality is this is a huge spectrum, and every culture has a different relationship with queerness in its history. For that matter, every nation has its own unique issues with censorship. A viewer from the USA may interpret a Japanese character as exhibiting stereotypically gay characteristics, but does that mean the Japanese creator intended it to be taken that way?
But then, if we try to account for what stereotypes Japanese media might use for queer characters to ascertain what the Japanese creator might have intended, we arrive at the same dead-end: the implication that queerness is only really portrayed via (usually negative) stereotypes.
This suggests that if media does not contain enough "clues" to imply a character is queer to the broadest possible audience, a queer reading of their story is out of the question. "Queer-coding" is treated as a metric of validity, a way to "prove" queer interpretations are allowable, yet it is based in stereotypes, censorship, and presumption of authorial intent.
The way queer-coding is continually brought into discussions about art essentially creates an ultimatum: media needs to be "explicit" by using direct (usually English language) terminology, or characters need to engage in things like kissing, declaring one's love, sexual activity, etc., yet even those are dismissed at times.
This creates a dynamic where art which is intentionally subtle or multifaceted may be seen as exhibiting cowardice rather than artistic complexity. It implies that if something is not "confirmed queer," queer themes cannot be read into it, queer subtext cannot be interpreted from it, and queer people are not allowed to identify with it.
This limits art. This builds walls that diminish human connection; it creates a situation where queer people are discouraged from seeing themselves in media not explicitly designated for them. Because, obviously, queer people are a completely different species from "normal people," right? Their feelings and experiences are so alien and distinct, there's no overlap anyone else could sympathize with.
You don't need permission to see queerness in art. You don't have anything to prove. Queer interpretations are just as valid as any other, and anyone who tells you different is selling something.
As I spoke about in this post, authorial intent is not more important than audience perception, and trying to infer the creator's intentions is a fool's errand. Especially in a situation where censorship is supposedly at play, any public statement from a creator could be reasonably disregarded as dishonest, which leaves us alone with ourselves and the work.
Which, by the way, is the only real way anyone experiences art. It's not you and the creator, it's you and the work. When people try to infer authorial intent, they are not discerning real, objective truth. They are sorting available information through a filter of what they consider believable before arriving at a subjective conclusion, which they then project onto a mental image of the creator.
In literary analysis, we select a "lens" through which to view art. This means that we decide to accept certain ideas as given fact and explore what the works says once we look at it that way. For example, we could accept as fact the idea that a number of the core cast are queer in some way. It posits the question: once we dismiss heterosexuality and cisgender identity as the only options, what do we see?
This is an intellectual concept, but the reality is that everybody naturally applies their own lens to art when they view it. This lens is not nearly so rigid or clearly defined, but it is a lens nonetheless, defined by their experiences, values, and individual personality.
I would love for people to stop using the phrase "queer-coding" quite so freely. It centers a need for validation and hinges that on "what the creator intended."
If you want some ideas for different language about this, consider these:
A theme might be queer by exploring broad topics queer people often struggle with, such as secrecy, shame, or self-acceptance.
The subtext of something might be queer in that one could read a double-meaning or deeper implication to the narrative device or scenario.
A work might contain allegory, symbolism, imagery or parallels that could be interpreted with queerness.
I don't think it's interesting to try to "win" by convincing you I personally know what the creator intended. That leaves the art static, unchanging, and lifeless. I would much rather tell you how I personally see the art and why, because that dynamic allows all of us examine the work more deeply.
In the end, it is not an author's edict in some external statement that gives art meaning. It is the audience. Our feelings are what give art meaning, and connecting with other people about what it all means to us is what keeps art alive.
Hey I was the one that asked about "Decuck Micdoryia", you seem to be unfamiliar with the meme, so to elaborate: it's essentially a joke made by the most extreme haters of the ending that basically calls Deku a cuckhold loser who peaked in high school and now works at Mcdonalds. It essentially highlights their frustration over the fact they felt Deku didn't get enough recognition for his feats, even going as far as believing Horikoshi hates Deku.
So, how do I feel about that? I feel like it's predictable that every dude who swapped their favorite character anytime they showed any vulnerability (cough Katsuki cough) to Izuku because they project their power fantasies onto his relative stoicism would equate Izuku losing his quirk to "working at McDonald's," that sounds like something they would do.
In fact, it's so predictable I fucking predicted it over a year ago.
Izuku has never gotten enough recognition for his feats; he was never gonna and never supposed to. That's practically what makes his character tick. Sorry for them they couldn't read the writing on the wall in chapter 1 lol. This isn't about their power fantasies, this is about the story Horikoshi wants to tell.

sometimes I feel like I canโt stand criticism of bnha, and then I read critique from people like you who actually enjoy the story and think about what it did well and what it didnโtโand I usually donโt mind it so much. so anyway, I guess I mean to say, thank you for participating in fandom from a place of affection
Thank you. I'm interested in honest criticism, and it's hard to take criticism seriously when it comes from a place of bad faith. I can tell a lot of people feel betrayed, but it was so predictable they would feel that way, because most people chose to back themselves into corners rather than stay open to the idea that things weren't as they believed. I can't take seriously any criticisms like "Horikoshi is a bad writer because he wrote something I didn't like," which makes it sound like they think Horikoshi somehow tripped and stumbled into this ending by accident. I also can't take seriously claims that the story failed in its themes or messaging that then go on to describe themes/messages that don't connect to the plot at all, like "failure to fully address the child soldiers aspect" when the story never brings anything like that up as a point it's interested in tackling.
I'm far more interested in talking about the actual fundamentals of writing. If you think the ending's rushed, give examples. If you think the ending's incoherent, give examples. If you think the ending stands in contrast to the major themes or messages of the story, give examples. Otherwise you're not giving criticism, you're just ranting your feelings--which is OKAY, but it's not anything I'm interested in reading about. Your personal feelings don't sway me. Your logic has a better chance of swaying me.
My criticisms will come when I'm confident in my reading of the story. At this time, I'm still puzzling out what the ending means to me, and I'd say I'm about 70% there. As a preview, the things I'm most likely to critique negatively are the order of the major story beats, especially in the final battle, and the decision to estrange the main characters from each other for so long it dampens the emotional impact of major moments because we don't get to see the characters we care most about react.
This weekโs initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.

this is the story of how we keep reaching out our hands.
One last leaks night. I'm really going to miss this.
Anything insightful to share before the chaos unfurls itself onto our dashes later?
The end of a story is always a rough time for those who loved it. Be kind to yourself and to your emotions. I didn't like the Fullmetal Alchemist ending for years, not until I saw it animated, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the series and participating in the fandom and loving it for years to come. And now I do like the ending and think a lot of my feelings about it before were mixed based on my life experiences and my sadness at it ending. You're allowed to feel about the ending however you do and you can do whatever you need to with it. I'll still be right here myself <3

In honor of UA/education day, I'mma learn you all some practical skills, ร la the summer training camp arc.
How to make Japanese-style curry from scratch!
Yes, from scratch. Plus ultra. No pre-made curry roux box necessary for those of you who may not have access to such products where you live or who want to make modifications for food intolerance (this can be made gluten free! in fact that's usually how I make it). I will include two recipes: one for curry roux, and one for curry the complete dish. This is going to be my personal recipe for making curry, curry roux included, with some notes on other twists you can add to this dish.
Recipes below the cut. Let's get cooking!
Recipe: Curry roux
You need blocks of curry roux to make Japanese-style curry. If you'd like to go the easy route, buy a box of S&B curry blocks (the most widespread brand I believe) or from any other brand. But if you'd like to make this from scratch, here's how you do it.
Required Ingredients:
Note: This recipe makes about 3.5 oz of curry blocks or the equivalent of one small container of store-bought pre-made curry blocks. You would dissolve it in 2.5-3 cups of liquid to make curry. I double this recipe to make larger batches.
3 tbsp butter (or a neutral oil like canola)
3 tbsp flour (all-purpose gluten free flour works just as well)
3 tbsp curry powder (I use S&B curry powder)
1 tbsp tomato paste
Salt
Seasoning (see below)
Pika's Special Seasoning:
Garlic powder or garlic salt
Chinese chicken bouillon powder (or just MSG) (Lee Kum Kee has a gluten free option)
Ground mustard
Celery salt
Sugar
Black and/or white pepper
Chili pepper (I use shichimi togarashi), optional for spicy
These are the ingredients I typically use to flavor my roux. You may ask how much, and well, sorry, my measurements here are in my heart. I throw in dashes based on aroma and experience. I also like my curry strong and spicy.
Any ingredient can be omitted as all each does is add a new layer of flavor. No ingredients depend on any others (though sugar with tomato paste seems like a given to me). You CAN omit the tomato paste if you're sensitive to tomatoes.
Other Optional Seasoning:
Cayenne, optional for spicy
Ground ginger (fresh ginger would probably work too)
Onion powder (especially if you don't have MSG or chicken bouillon powder)
Garam masala (around 1 tbsp adds a sweeter flavor and a cinnamon-cardamom aroma)
Honey (I personally put honey in the curry after it's made, not at this stage)
These are ingredients others use that you may consider adding for different depths of flavor. I do not typically use them in this recipe, but I have been known to experiment with them on occasion. I've listed them in the order of how likely I am to throw them in on a whim.
Instructions:
Make one batch of roux for a small, mild curry. Make two batches of roux (i.e. double the ingredients) for a stronger and/or larger batch of curry.
Heat a skillet on the stove over medium-low heat. Optionally toast dry spices if desired, though not necessary, then remove spices and set aside. Melt butter (or heat oil, if using) in pan.
Add flour and combine. I personally use a nonstick pan-safe whisk to make sure it combines well, but a wooden spoon or silicone paddle would work too.
Reduce heat to low (medium-low if you're ready to watch that thing like a hawk). Cook 5-15 minutes stirring constantly to keep the roux from sticking to the pan and burning. You're looking for the roux mixture to turn light brown like peanut butter. It will develop a nutty aroma as it cooks.
Add curry powder, tomato paste, salt, and all desired seasoning ingredients. Stir to combine. The mixture should become dry and pasty.
Cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until all ingredients are well-combined and then turn off burner.
If using roux soon, set aside. If not using roux soon, put all the roux in a container lined with parchment paper. Score the paste with a knife to make it easy to break and remove. In an air-tight container, the roux will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month* or in the freezer for up to 4 months.
*Caveat: If you use chicken bouillon powder or any ingredient that includes meat, I do not know if it will store in the fridge for longer than a few days. In this case, I would suggest freezing the roux to be safe.
Recipe: Japanese-style curry
Ingredients:
Note: My portions are determined by what fits in my pot.
2 tbsp neutral oil (canola)
1-2 lb protein (you can use any protein i.e. beef, pork, chicken, seafood, tofu, tonkatsu, etc., but I usually just stick with mushrooms for ease; if I do meat, I usually pick ground beef or cubed beef chuck)
1 batch of curry roux for mild curry (or 4 blocks packaged curry roux), 2 batches for strong (see above recipe) (or 8 blocks of packaged curry roux)
1 sweet onion (can substitute with yellow or white onion), sliced into half moons
1-2 carrots, peeled and sliced rangiri style
5-6 Yukon gold potatoes, cut into large chunks
8 oz button mushrooms (16 oz if mushrooms are the primary protein), cut into bite-sized chunks
2-3 stalks of celery, cut into bite-sized chunks
4-6 cloves or equivalent of minced garlic
1 quart chicken stock (dashi or vegetable stock or other stock or even water can also be used)
Meiji milk chocolate, 4-5 pieces (you can use any chocolate you like)
1-2 tbsp honey (add to taste)
1 grated apple, optional (I don't usually do this but it's a thing some people like to do)
Cheddar cheese, shredded
Cooked starch of choice i.e. rice or noodles
Pickled ginger, optional garnish
Fukujinzuke pickles, optional garnish
Instructions:
If your protein is raw and requires cooking or browning, prepare the meat first. Heat oil a pot over medium heat and sear all the sides brown or cook ground meat until browned. For seared meat, do not worry about cooking it completely; it will finish cooking in the curry. Remove protein from pot. You can leave the drippings in the pot if you'd like to add their flavor to the curry. Ground meat might produce an excess amount of fat though, which you may want to clean out first.
Heat more oil in the pot and add the vegetables. Cook on medium heat for 5 or so minutes or until the vegetables start to develop color and the onions turn translucent.
Add back the protein and any accumulated juices to the pot.
Add chicken stock (or broth/liquid of choice) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cover. Simmer until ingredients are tender and potatoes can be pierced with a fork, approximately 15 minutes.
Remove lid and reduce heat to low.
Add curry roux (or packaged curry blocks), chocolate pieces, honey, and grated apple if using. (If you'd like, you can break the blocks and chocolate up or shave them into small pieces with a knife.) Stir constantly, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pan often, until curry and chocolate are completely melted and incorporated in the liquid.
Simmer 5 minutes while stirring constantly. Cook longer if you want it to thicken more.
Serve over rice or noodles. Top with shredded cheddar cheese (in my opinion there is no such thing as too much cheese). Optionally garnish with pickled ginger and/or fukujinzuke pickles.
Store leftover curry in the fridge for 3 days. The curry and liquid may separate, but they'll combine again when you heat it up and mix it together. I'm not sure about freezing leftovers as it usually doesn't last long enough for me to get to that stage, but it's worth a try.
Okay Pika, I'm dying to know what you think about the chapter, particularly since you pointed out that it was a bit sus that the end of the Uraraka/Toga fight (are we calling it a fight? or a talk? discussion?) wasn't broadcasted.
Is it possible that Toga actually died? Or do you think she disappeared afterwards? Or is it possible that Uraraka is actually Toga?? I'm assuming this is not the case, but I have so many possibilities running through my head but I'm not sure how likely any of them are. A penny for your thoughts?
Look, I don't know for sure if Toga died. I just know that all the circumstances surrounding her death and its presentation in the manga have been suspicious as hell. Horikoshi had the opportunity to confirm her death many times and chose not to, and that stands out. Ochako seems to be shaken by the fact that only her "big fight" wasn't broadcasted, so that means she doesn't get to see what happened to Toga. There's no closure for her.
The major thought I have is how the final scene of this most recent chapter seems like a setup for a parallel to the scene between Izuku and Ochako after Ochako lost her match against Katsuki in the sports festival, which for me was bar none the best scene between Izuku and Ochako in the whole series. I hope Horikoshi builds upon what was special about that scene in this parallel.
