Okay, because I’ve seen some of you guys freaking out in my asks and seriously wondering if I’m actually dead
I can confirm that in fact, I’m very much alive
I’ve spent the last few months writing my PhD thesis, which basically means I’ve hardly had time for anything else other than writing non-fun stuff. It’s been pretty stressful, so yeah… haven’t been online a lot, tbh
Posted about it a few months ago but just dropping it here again just in case anyone was wondering about it

hi! do u like celebedsy? i got this beautiful willmack fic i stumbled upon but its not finished yet and lowkey has a gut wrenching celebedsy on the side
Honestly, any kind of Hockey RPF ship works for me!! I love willmack, but sometimes I also like to dive into other ships so just... throw anything my way!!
Last night I was scrolling down ao3 and realized something kind of... horrifying. It's actually been LONG since I've had time to properly sit down and read fic, which basically means I've probably missed, like… the last nine months (give or take) of Willmack fic
So please... go crazy with the recs
Seriously, like, send me your favorites, recent classics, self-recs, fics everyone has somehow read except me, whatever you've got
I was thinking I could compile all the recs into a post afterward so everyone can have them in one place, and then maybe later I can come back and give my thoughts on the ones I read, if that's something people would be interested in?
My reading list and my browser tabs are both currently looking alarmingly empty, and I trust you all far more than ao3's search function
Nooo, I’m not gone, I swear!! I’ve just been kind of kidnapped (that’s probably the right word for it at this point) by my PhD thesis lately. I’m really close to submitting now, which means I spend basically the entire day staring at my laptop writing already, and by the time I finally shut it down at night, my brain is fried. I’m just, like, fully incapable of opening another document or thinking about fic edits for more than three seconds before I have to lie face down somewhere
I still check in around here from my phone, though. I read you guys’ asks all the time, even when I’m too exhausted to properly answer them, so yeah, I’m still lurking around in the background like a tiny stressed gremlin living in the walls
If all goes well, I should be submitting around mid-July, so like… soon-ish?? pleasepleaseplease cross your fingers for me, because I really can’t wait to be done with this fjdksk
Although “done” is maybe a bit too generous, because after that I still have to study, prepare my presentation, rehearse it approximately fifty times, convince myself I won’t completely blank out in front of everyone and accidentally forget my own research exists, and then actually defend the thesis without leaving my body
But still. Once the submission is over, I’ll hopefully have a little more space in my brain again before the next wave of academic suffering starts 😢
Okay so. I’ve been catching up on The Testaments (The Handmaid’s Tale sequel, for anyone who doesn’t know what it is), and my brain just could not stop thinking about it
So, as any completely sane and normal adult does during a six hour layover on the way back from a conference, I opened my notes app and just started writing. Call it a cry for help. Call it the self-destructive coping mechanism of someone who is less than two months away from submitting her PhD thesis (which, yes, is why I’ve been MIA lately. I’m sorry. I miss you all. I miss writing. The thesis does not care, though)
But here’s the thing. I need angst. Not just angst. Like, ANGST. The kind that makes you cry until your face hurts and your hands are shaking, and then you lie there at 2am staring at the ceiling because ohmygod it was SO BAD and you have to press your palms against your eyes and just breathe because your chest is tight and you can’t tell if you want to keep reading or throw your phone across the room. I want that. I NEED that. Am I crazy? Probably. But what else is new?
So obviously my brain went full angst mode. And this is what came out:
Will and Mack, second season with the Sharks. Everything is golden
They’re best friends in the way that makes other people feel a little sick with how close they are. They fall asleep on each other’s couches. Mack steals food off Will’s plate without asking and Will pretends to be annoyed about it every single time. The league doesn’t look so scary anymore, and the Sharks don’t look so shitty anymore, and Mack is top four in points and playing the best hockey of his life. Things are good, actually. Things are really, genuinely, frighteningly good
And then the Emergency Governance Act passes in the middle of the night with no vote, and three states fall before anyone has time to process what that means, and the world shifts
This is a Gilead/Handmaid’s Tale AU. It’s A/B/O. And Mack has been keeping a secret for a very long time
What follows is a drive across the country with whatever they could grab in twenty minutes. A checkpoint outside of Oklahoma City at two in the morning, flashlights in their faces, hands that won’t stop shaking. The specific, horrible silence of realizing you cannot go back. It’s realizing that your best friend is not exactly who you thought he was, and then realizing, much slower and much more painfully, that you are not who you thought you were either. It’s golden afternoons in a little garden in a house in Northern California. It’s dark nights in a cold bed clutching your phone against your chest, alone and silent and miserable, and the walls feeling closer every day. It’s a young man who doesn’t understand, not yet, what it means to watch the world close in around someone you love and realize you were part of why it took so long to see it. It’s another young man who has been fighting and running and shrinking himself for so long that “I’ll be fine” stopped meaning anything, but he keeps saying it anyway, because what else is there
Will I ever post this? I don’t know. I hope so. But I wanted to get it out here
I don’t have a posting timeline for any of my WIPs because, again, PhD thesis, I am but a humble science goblin surviving on spite and caffeine. But I’ll try to post and update whenever I have time

I also noticed you changed the part about the bracelet from “This Omega is spoken for.” to “This Omega is mine.” and changes like this always makes me wonder what is the thought process if it’s not too much to ask ? I love both btww 💗💗
Honestly, there’s not some big, deep thought process behind it. It’s way messier than that
A lot of what I’ve been doing with the rewrite is just trying to make the tone actually fit the characters better. Like, I think I was pretty consistent with Will overall, writing him like someone his age and all that. But when I started rereading, there were moments where I’d stop and think… okay but would he actually say this?
Like with Dr Fraser and the hospital scenes, I’ve changed quite a bit of the dialogue because it didn’t really sound the way a doctor would talk. It felt a bit off, or too generic and informal almost. so I’ve been trying to make everyone sound more like a character like that would
And it’s kind of the same with Will. When you’re writing something as long as JLH, things slip. They just do. Especially when you don’t have a beta (I know I need one, I know 😭) and you’re the one rereading everything over and over until it all just turns into words and you stop noticing stuff
So with the bracelet line specifically, I remember reading “this omega is spoken for” and just going… would an 18 year old alpha hockey player who basically lives on tiktok actually say that? Like… no. Probably not
“This omega is mine” just felt more him. More direct, a bit rougher, more instinctive and way less polished
And then there are other changes where I genuinely don’t even have a reason. I’ll start rewriting a sentence and suddenly it becomes a whole paragraph and I’m like oh… okay. That’s actually closer to what I meant. And I just go with it
So yeah. That kinda sums up the thought process behind it all
heyyy! So I noticed you added 5 k new words to JLH! Can you tell which parts got updated so I can read again? so excited for it
Hi!!!
As of right now, I've edited and posted up to chapter 9! I'm taking my time with the editing/rewriting, but whenever I finish posting the updated chapters I'll post it on Tumblr!
I just read the rewritten version of their first time on JLH and made me tear up am I a freak idk but it was sooo much tender ily
NO because this is exactly what I want!!!! Like, really. This is the whole reason I'm going back and doing a slow reread/rewrite
When I first wrote JLH, I wasn't exactly rushing, but I was always half in the present scene and half in what was coming next. My chapters are SO long, and they always took me days to write, and I think sometimes I lost track of the emotional thread I was actually trying to hold onto
But now it's all there. The story exists. A few months have passed, my head is clearer, and I can sit with it properly. It's so much easier to read a scene and go "oh… this is good, but this isn't quite how I wanted it to feel." And then reshape it. Soften it. Linger a little longer where it matters.
I know some of you had favorite parts of certain scenes that maybe I've changed or cut off, but know I'm not doing it because I hate them or anything else (I love each and every version of JLH), but just because I want it to be the version of the story I had in my head, and I'm so happy it's finally coming through that way
That said: I've gotten so many messages lately and they're kind of piling up in my inbox, and I'm so sorry I haven't been able to reply properly. Work has been insane and I'm heading into what's probably the last conference of my PhD next week, so everything is a bit… chaotic right now
But please, know I read every singe one of your messages. Like, truly. I read them on my phone and think about them, and if only I had enough time I'd reply to them on my notes app and then post them (but know I do, even if it's in my head). I'm going to try and reply slowly as I get little pockets of time, I promise 💙

was re reading JLH and noticed my favorite scene got deleted and fell to my knees
WAIT WHAT??!!
That's so weird because like, yeah, I have been kind of "rewriting" bits here and there, but not like… fully going in and deleting whole scenes?? at least not that I remember?? now I'm stressed 😭
Please please tell me which scene you mean so I can check!! Maybe I messed something up without realizing, or moved something around and forgot to paste it back, or ao3 just decided to betray me 💀
And also I'm so sorry if it actually disappeared omg??? I need to investigate this immediately
Mack cracks an eye open. He's been half-asleep for the better part of an hour, sprawled out on the grass under the pitch pine in Tristan's backyard, the sun warm on his legs where they stretch past the shade. The tree keeps most of the sun off him, just enough that he won't spend tomorrow regretting this with burned shoulders and three days of skin peeling off in the shower.
Tristan's been sitting next to him the whole time with his phone clutched in both hands, leg bouncing in that restless way he gets when he's worked himself into a state. The bouncing's gotten worse in the last ten minutes.
From across the pool, Gavin doesn't even look up from where he's sprawled on the inflatable pretzel he bought at Target last night. It's fucking giant, with fake salt painted on in white. "Yeah, no shit. But like, what'd you do this time?"
Tristan drags a hand through his hair, and Mack watches it stand up in about six different directions. "Okay, so—you know how Coach is always going on about how a real apology is an action, right? Not just words?"
"Sure?"
"Right, so." Tristan swallows. His leg's bouncing faster now. "Will hasn't texted me back since the boat thing, which—yeah, okay, that's fair, that's completely on me. But I figured I needed to actually do something, you know? Show her I was sorry. So I sent her flowers."
The pretzel dips low in the water as Gavin shoves his sunglasses down his nose, and even from here Mack can see his eyes go huge. "Dude. No."
"I got them from that place on Main my mom always uses. The lady working there said peonies were, like, the best for apologies."
"There's literally no such thing as an apology flower, you fucking idiot."
"But the lady said—"
"What'd Will say?" Quinn cuts in from the shallow end where he's been floating on his back for the past twenty minutes, looking half-dead to the world.
Tristan makes this pained sound in the back of his throat and turns his phone around. Mack can't see the screen from here he's lying, but whatever's on it makes Quinn's face do something between a wince and a laugh.
"Okay, so she said," Quinn's trying not to smile as he reads it out loud, "I'm allergic to peonies, my eyes are swollen shut, please STOP. In like, all caps. And with three exclamation points."
Gavin fucking loses it. He starts laughing so hard he rolls straight off the pretzel with a massive splash, comes up coughing and wheezing on pool water but still laughing like he can't breathe. "Holy shit, Tris. You—oh my god, you actually sent your crush to the ER."
"It's not fucking funny, alright?" Tristan says. He's got that look on his face now, the one he gets after he takes a stupid penalty in the third period and skates back to the bench knowing Coach is gonna bag-skate the entire team for it tomorrow morning. All stressed and pissed off and spiraling at once. "You guys don't—she's actually gonna kill me. Like, for real this time."
"She's not gonna kill you," Quinn says. He's standing in the shallow end now, water dripping off his hair.
"She literally might."
"She won't, dude. Will's too nice." Quinn shrugs. "She'll ice you out for a bit, make you work for it, but she'll get over it eventually. She always does."
"I just—" Tristan runs both hands through his hair now, completely messes it up. "She's been single for like, five minutes, and I've already managed to fuck it up twice. Twice."
Single.
Mack's heart does somethings stupid in his chest, this quick double-beat that he immediately tries to ignore. The sun feels hotter suddenly where it's pressing down on his shins.
"Wait, hold on." Gavin's hauling himself back onto the pretzel, water streaming off his shoulders. "I thought she was still with Gauthier?"
"Nah, they broke up like, a few weeks ago. Cutter mentioned it when I ran into him at the club, and then she deleted all their shit off Instagram, so." Tristan shrugs. "Apparently it'd been coming for a while. Like, months."
"Huh," Gavin says.
Huh, Mack thinks. Except it's way more than that.
"Wait." He hears himself say it before he's really thought it through.
All three of them look over at him. He's still flat on his back with his arm over his eyes.
"She was dating Cutter?" he asks. "Cutter Gauthier?"
"Uh, yeah?" Tristan says it like this is the most obvious thing in the world, like everyone's known this forever except Mack. "For like, three years or something. Since freshman year."
Three years. Mack stares up at the pine branches shifting overhead and tries to process that.
He doesn't have a problem with Cutter. Not really. They're rivals, sure. BC versus BU, all that bullshit that matters way too much during the season and not at all in the summer. But Cutter's a good guy. Mack's played against him enough times to know that. Loud as fuck on the ice, chirps like it's his fucking job, but he's never dirty about it. Never the kind of guy who'll go after someone's knees or run his mouth in a way that crosses lines.
Off the ice he's even nicer. He always says what's up when they run into each other at parties, buys a round if he's at the bar. Just one of those guys everyone likes even if you're supposed to hate him six months out of the year.
So yeah, Mack doesn't have a problem with Cutter.
Except he's thinking about last year now. That sports bar in Kendall Square during the Super Bowl when Mack had been watching the game with Aiden and Cole. A group of BC guys had been there too, taking up half the bar. Cutter had come over at some point to talk to Cole about something, mentioned his girlfriend played professional golf and was at some tournament in Florida, couldn't make it to watch the game.
Going on about how hard dating another athlete was but how she got it, got him, all that shit. How she understood the hockey schedule, understood why he couldn't always make it down to tournaments. And Mack had still been with his ex then, figured that was just gonna keep being true for a while, so he'd been half-listening and nodding along.
He'd gotten up to grab another beer at some point. And when he'd gone to find the bathroom, he'd seen Cutter making out with some girl by the hallway near the toilets.
Dark brown hair. Definitely not blonde.
Mack had assumed that was the girlfriend Cutter had been talking about, that she'd shown up or changed her plans or something. Just figured the tournament ended early.
Three years means Will was on the other end of all that the whole time. And the girl with dark brown hair wasn't her.
The thought makes something ugly and sharp twist in Mack's chest, and he doesn't know what to do with it. He doesn't even really know Will. He's met her maybe once, two times if you count staring at her across the bonfire at her place five days ago and never actually working up the nerve to go talk to her.
They haven't even had a real conversation. He knows basically nothing about her except that she's funny and nice and smart enough that even Tristan shuts up to listen when she's explaining something.
And when Mack pulled her out of the water, her eyes had been so fucking blue Mack forgot how to breathe for like a full thirty seconds.
That's it. That's all he knows. He has no right to feel this angry about Cutter, about the idea that she spent three years with someone who'd do that to her.
"Anyway," Tristan says, and his voice yanks Mack back to the pool, to the grass warm under his shoulders. "I gotta figure out how to fix this before she tells Grace I literally sent her into anaphylactic shock. Her sister's fucking terrifying, man. Like, Harvard-law terrifying."
"I've got like, one shot here," Tristan adds, staring at his phone again. "Maybe two if I'm lucky. So, like, what do I do?"
"Don't send more flowers," Gavin says flatly.
"Yeah, obviously."
"No, I'm serious, dude."
"I said obviously." Tristan rolls his eyes. "I'm thinking maybe like—edible arrangements?"
"Bro. No."
"But like, as a joke, you know? Self-aware. Like, I know I fucked up so here's something you can actually eat that won't kill you."
"That's not gonna read as self-aware, bud. That's gonna read like you learned literally nothing."
"Okay but what if I put a note that says—"
"No. No fucking notes. No more anything."
Mack closes his eyes and tries to sink back into the feeling of sun-warmed grass under his shoulders and the music playing from Gavin's speakers. It should be a good day. It is a good day.
Except now all he can think about is Will being single.
And he has absolutely no clue what to do with that information. He's pretty sure he's not supposed to be this happy about someone's breakup, but he kind of is, which makes him feel like the worst kind of asshole.
Will just got out of a three-year relationship. Three years. That's longer than Mack's been in college. The last thing she needs is some random guy she's barely met deciding now's his moment to shoot his shot.
I know you’ve largely moved on from 1386 (as we all probably should) but I wish there was someone else to pair Nico with. I don’t want to give him up but he doesn’t have a will to his mack anymore 😔. Idk I just needed to get that off my chest I guess. It feels silly to worry about this given everything but I don’t know man I just want to see Nico happy in fics still
Oh anon I'm so sorry you're grieving this. It sucks so much when something happens irl that affects your love of someone who was mostly important to you as a fictional character -- but also not, right? There's always bleed in both directions, and that's what makes this so tough.
I will say, I don't think there's a "should" about moving on from 1386. It might not feel good to you to engage with them right now or ever again, and that's totally fine. But the idea that we should only write RPF about hockey players who haven't shown themselves crossing a line of acceptable moral behavior is a house of cards. It's more about virtue signaling than actual morality. It doesn't really hold up, and it doesn't need to, because at the end of the day, we write HRPF because the NHL is a heteronormative patriarchal nightmare.
(This is getting long so I'm putting the rest under the cut. Also, anon, you might not be the person who needs to hear all this today. But it seems like I needed to say it, so here we go!)
I'm not saying that there are no hockey players who believe in things I would agree with. I hope there are! But that's not a precondition to me writing about them. The NHL is such a good substrate for the stories I want to tell because it takes these boys and gives them enormous amounts of privilege while also subjecting them to constant pressure to conform with unspoken but rigid social norms. @demotu gave me the phrase "homophobic + homosocial" and it's such an accurate description of the toxicity of the environment. Fellow sports bros are the only people who are really people but also you can't fall in love with them! Have to fall in love with a skinny probably-blond lady with beachy waves and lip fillers! And if you do fall in love with your bro and manage to notice it through the cloud of heteronormativity you've been breathing your whole life...well, you'd better hide it. Can't become a problem in the room. Can't become the gay face of the NHL.
I imagine there are some guys who come through that environment with other values intact. There's surely a range of how much these guys are kind and thoughtful and considerate of non-sports-bro people in their daily lives, and of how much they consider non-sports-bro people in their politics. But the environment isn't really designed for that, and so the assumption that these guys are acceptably progressive until proven otherwise is just fundamentally implausible. You talk about Nico having a Will to his Mack -- but do we really think Will would have refused to go to the White House if he'd been on that Olympic team? We don't know that he wouldn't, so we can comfort ourselves with that belief if we want to, but it's basically saying "I like this person so they must be an exception." It's wishful thinking.
And I would argue that we don't need to engage in that wishful thinking. It's actually okay to write about guys who are probably or even definitely problematic! To me, it's a tangle of a few different things:
Support
The strongest moral objection, I think, is that writing about these guys constitutes giving them support. It's tricky, because they are in a field where public support means something to their careers--not everything, but it's a factor. But I would argue that hockey fandom and HRPF fandom are not the same thing. This is not where teams are looking to see how their players are being received. This is not where players are hoping they'll blow up. This can be frustrating when we're doing things like excoriating the guys for going to the White House and we know they don't care about our opinions. It can also be comforting when you're like, wait, will writing Matthew Tkachuk getting fucked in heat make him think I support his membership on that blue ribbon commission or whatever? Trust me, it will not.
There is, however, bleed over. Shipping two players might not make YOU want to go to their games and buy their jerseys, not if you also know they're people you don't like irl, but maybe it'll do that for the people who read your fics. You're still participating in an ecosystem that's boosting these guys, even if not very directly.
If that's a hard line for you, I don't think there's any part of men's hockey RPF that's safe from it. Like I said, I think the reason most of these guys haven't gone to the White House is that they haven't been invited. The NHL is a deeply problematic institution that's covered up sexual assault and banned pride jerseys and employed Carter Hart, and you can't pick and choose the parts that haven't shown themselves to be overtly problematic yet without both endorsing it all and setting yourself up for disappointment. There's no ethical consumption under NHL patriarchy, and the only way to win is to opt out.
(The person who introduced me to hockey RPF did that, actually, after the Pens went to Trump's White House in 2017. I understand that decision, even though I made a different one. We still talk every day.)
Feelings
I said above that you can't pick and choose among teams and players and feel like you're being morally pure. You can, however, decide that you don't want to engage with certain teams or players for any reasons you want -- because they make you feel gross, because you're disappointed in them, because they aren't who you thought they were. Fandom is supposed to be fun, and there's no point in writing or reading about someone who gets in the way of your enjoyment.
It sounds like that's where you are with Jack Hughes right now. Tbh, I'm not sure where I am on him. I do feel disappointed and hurt by what happened, even though I know on a logical level that this was a very predictable outcome of a U.S. win. I didn't have any active plot bunnies for him and Nico -- I've already covered them in my two main universes, and I have so many others to catch up on -- so this is mostly a theoretical feeling. If I did have stories in mind for him, that might be enough to make me decide I'm willing to separate the real person from the fictional version and forge ahead. I don't think it would be wrong for me to feel either way. Feelings are what they are and they aren't the same as ethics.
Social approval
This is where I think the strongest "should" tends to come from. Part of the reason people might shy away from writing Jack at this point even if they'd still like to is because they don't want other people to see it and think it means they endorse the things he's said. I would like to stress that this is a valid reason to choose not to do something. It's not WRONG to avoid writing or reading about someone because you think other people would come after you for it. But it's not wrong to decide to ignore that social pressure, either. Social pressure isn't the same as a moral imperative.
I think also we can get into bubbles on Tumblr where we think the social pressure is greater than it is. People are still reading my 1386 fics. They're showing up in my kudos emails. I suspect we'll see the pairing drop off, but maybe not entirely. I kind of hope not entirely, because it's one I've loved. If it does die off, it's not a moral victory. If it doesn't, it's not a moral failing. It's just a read on where the fic community has landed, emotionally and culturally, on the desire to engage with these people as characters.
If you do want to engage with the characters, I'd invite you to remind yourself that virtue signaling isn't the same as morality. I also suspect, based on my long experience writing unpopular characters, that you'd find the fallout to be less than you think. But if you find it less fun than it was and would rather not, that's a totally fine conclusion to come to.
The actual morality of it
I guess I'll conclude by saying: this can all feel really complicated. At the end of the day, though, this is one of the least morally weighted things any of us do with our lives. How we treat the people around us, what causes we choose to support with time and/or money, those are so much more important than what hockey players we read and write smut about. Which means that how you respect other people's decisions to engage or not engage with a given piece of smut is more morally important than the smut itself. We do have opportunities in fandom to show our values every day -- it's just not about which hockey players we support. It's about being kind to the people in the fandom trenches community around us.
All right, that was a very long answer that only partially addressed your original ask, anon. I don't have an easy emotional answer for what to do about Nico! But fandom is ever changing, and we have so much latitude to do with it what we want. I hope you'll find your answer.
I hope this ok, but I was wondering if it would be ok with you to make a Podfic of Just Like Heaven? I can’t even count the amount of times I have read it, and, selfishly I was thinking as I was driving today about how great it would be to able to listen to it in the car.
I absolutely love your fic, the world you have built is absolutely incredible. Honestly, I’m absolutely obsessed.
Hiiii
Oh wow. I don't even know how to properly say thank you for this. The idea that you've read just like heaven that many times, and that you were driving around wishing you could listen to it, that honestly means so much to me
And yes, I would love that!!!!
Though, maybe not yet. I'm actually in the middle of rereading and rewriting it right now, since I couldn't find it in myself to do it right after I posted it. And I swear, I cringe every few paragraphs. There are so many places where you can tell I wrote half of something, left it, and then came back later in a completely different headspace. Some parts are repetitive, some feel unfinished, and there are little inconsistencies that I can't unsee anymore. I'm trying to smooth it all out and make it the version I always meant it to be
I'm currently at chapter 5, and I've been posting the updated chapters as I finish them (in case anyone's noticed small changes 👀). And since a podfic is something that kind of lives forever, I would really love for it to be based on the final, fully revised version
If you're okay with waiting until I'm done with the rewrite, I would be thrilled to have you make a podfic. Truly. I'll 100% let you know as soon as it's finished
Thank you again, really. This made my whole day in a way I can't even explain 💙
