john grew up around abusive, violent, unloving parents. and because of this, john grew up to be a very violent, bitter, isolating person. if he gets into an dispute with someone, he can only resolve with his fist. if someone tries to be friends with him, he is quick to shove away. if he even gets a sudden hint that someone likes him he will make it know that he could never reciprocate the same feelings back to them.

it isn’t til he meets smitty that things slowly begin to shift. smitty, to john at least in the beginning of their friendship, is an painfully, overly sweet and bubbly. it pissed him off more than ever, to the point of physical fights with him. but smitty doesn’t leave or even lay a hand on john, he stays. john is all but dumbfounded, confused as to why he would stay with a person like himself. smitty simply admits it’s that he knows john isn’t a bad person at heart, but it’s rather he is bad at expressing with feelings due to the dangerous environment he lived in. he was born to learn that it was better to argue and be bitter than to be calm or let go, or to push those that he loves away because it would cause more problems in the future, etc.

slowly but surely smitty is able to learn about john’s situation, almost in standing in for a therapist and best friend. john is able to tolerate smitty the more and more they had these “therapy sessions” or just hanging out in general. smitty is able to watch john go from this angry creature, to dissipate into a king, gentle hearted person. he can hear his raging voice grow soft and tender, almost like a whisper. he isn’t as open as smitty but he becomes more kinder to those around. he’s able to heal from the wounds but the scars are a nice reminder of where he come from.

additional things—

1. john and smitty are a aromantic platonic couple due to john never being able to find romance in people growing up

2. while john is still a bitter person, he realizes he really likes smitty’s calming voice and slowly stops being so up tight around him but only for the voice. he makes sure that smitty knows that if it weren’t for his tender voice he’d beat him up

3. john laying in smitty’s lap while he vents to him, loving the feeling of him playing with his hair and massaging his scalp softly with his hands. smitty all the while gently acknowledges his problems with hums, not inputting on the situation but just making sure john knew smitty understood every moment and feeling john had.
