Hey, can you tell me what Paulina and Lukas talked about in the Podcast yesterday? Thank you so much!
they talked about a lot, let me try to summarize it as best as I can remember
they were asked how the process of writing a season works and Lukas said the head writers create a arc overview for the season, and then the whole writers team start plotting and decide what happens when
apparently they have a white board with all days of the week and then put post its on the day a certain clip should happen which is somehow exactly how I pictured writing a skam season looks like
they also write the text messages and most of the social media/ig content but the social media team also has a little more freedom when it comes to adding “plot irrelevant” content
they talked a lot about feedback and how important and at the same time difficult it can be
Lukas mentioned he has realized feedback gets generally more negative when the plot is angstier/fatou is sad (which he is right about no point in denying that)
Paulina said the instant feedback is exciting but a curse at the same time because it can be difficult to differentiate between legit criticism and emotional driven disappointment (again she is very right about that)
iirc Lukas mentioned the “queerbaiting” comment as an example for emotionally driven feedback (once again very true, and probably the reason twt is having a meltdown bc they feel called out)
he also said twitter feedback is very different than tumblr feedback, they know lol
they, especially Paulina, also talked about how much they valued the criticism they have gotten for the ava/mailin sl, what they could have done better with Ava’s storyline: mainly they should have paid more attention to showing things more from Ava’s backstory because a mostly white audience will subconsciously always more easily sympathize with mailin; on the other hand who should the representation be for, should they visually show trauma and racism to potentially alienate black viewers bc it could trigger them just to “educate” the white audience; she said it’s a really difficult decision
Lukas said something like “can we trust a white young audience to see the struggles of marginalized groups without being beaten up by nazis” which I thought was a wonderful (I’m assuming unintentional) dig at wtf*ck
they talked about the survey and interviews they have done with teens about their experiences before they started writing the seasons
a lot of teens talked about struggling with school and a lot of academic pressures so it was important to them to include that in one of the seasons
Paulina mentioned something about a lot of people asking for Jewish rep and I’m kind of confused and i might misinterpret what she said next bc it kinda sounded like that is smth they will (if they are renewed) cover?
They talked about how happy they are to tell a story without the queer characters struggling to come out, they are proud to portray queer characters that aren’t defined by their sexual orientation but have a personality and hobbies and are complex and flawed outside their sexual orientation (and I agree, it still makes me cry)
it was also important to them that kieu my’s sexuality wasn’t kept a mystery for long but instead was revealed right at the start of the season
and the last thing I remember is that they talked about the #ActOut campaign that happened a few weeks ago in germany when a lot of german actor unanimously decided to public come out as queer
