You are a part-time social worker from the jurisdiction(governed) area, paid to hand out foods on the exiled ring. You met him after handing him his rations, exhausted and timidly raising his hands. When you two brush fingers and instinctively locked eyes, a sudden wave of light lit his eyes, and everything around you both turned white.
That’s when you both knew, you two were destined!
Unfortunately, you both were snapped back to reality when a soldier in your team slammed the truck, signaling to depart.
By the time you turn around, he is gone.
Neither of you slept that night, thinking about each other. Shan Yue, held his hand above his face, staring at the fingers that accidently brushed yours. Recalling the warmth that makes you flinch, and that look in your eyes. The eyes that filled with sparks and clarity, something he had never seen from anyone else here in the exiled land.
He clenched his hand and pumped his fist, excited for the next distribution of rations. He giggled himself to sleep, and slept with a smiling face. ( A Chun woke up to this and was mortified)
The next distribution came, but he didn’t dare join the line. You, on the other hand, felt depressed. You were also looking forward to this, but unfortunately, he didn’t show up.
This cruel game has been going on for a month now, no matter how much you turn your head to look (even a glimpse) of him, he was never there. Like he doesn’ t exist, and that he was just a figment of your imagination, trying to cope with the grim cloud surrounding the exiled land. Shoulders dropped, you continue handing out rations with a disappointed face.
However, on the corner of a tall building, a certain person hid behind the shadows. Face filled with hesitance and shame. How can a disgusting black ring like him, can approach such marvelous beauty. With such impure thoughts!
Fortunately, his ‘oh-so-benevolent’ big brother, who keeps teasing him in the past for having ‘such a silly crush’ , now, witnessing his younger brother reduced to a coward. He couldn’t take it anymore, and he’s PISSED.
“AAGHH!” Ah Chun screamed frustratingly, grabbing Shan Yue’s collar. “ Hey! Shan Yue, how long can you keep playing this stupid game of hide and seek!?” Shan Yue winced underneath Ah Chun’s glare. “ I’m so sick of seeing you looking like a wet puppy, if you want her that bad then man up!” Despite Ah Chun’s intention of motivating his younger brother, this made him even more discouraged. He let go of his shirt, and watched as his pitiful best friend dropped to his knees, slumping like a sack of potatoes.
“ But I don’t think I’m worthy of them,” Shan Yue scoffs. “ Heh, why did I think I have some worth in the first place? Look at me! I’m a black ring, an evil ring!” He scrunched his face in despair and tried to claw his shirt “ I’m on dirty rags and smell like shit! While she is living a good life in the jurisdiction area…” Covering his face between his forearms, he mumbles “ I don’t want to ruin their life by dragging her onto my level, all because of that damn love!”
Ah chun can only sympathize for his dearest little brother and best friend, unsure of how to comfort him. They are used to living an awful life in the exiled zone, barely scraping by to survive. When they face multiple problems, they always stick beside each other and work together to find solutions.
Now, they’re currently facing a crisis they both don’t know how to solve. Ah Chun sighs, realizing that Shan Yue might need some alone time. “Stay here” He said before leaving him to his own devices.
It has been 2 hours since Ah Chun left, and he hasn’t returned yet. Shan Yue wondered where he disappeared and decided to start looking for him. Only to be stopped by someone he never expected.
It was YOU !! OMG!! Wha-What??
he couldn’t believe it! The most perfect person he had laid his eyes on, is right in front of him! He looked very funny, mouth agape and eyes wide open, that you couldn’t help but let out a giggle.
And GOD , that small giggle of your sound so angelic to his ears! It felt like being at heaven’s gate!
“ Heyy.. so, I noticed that you have been avoiding me” You teased, winking at him. This brought him back to reality which made him blush really hard. His head is practically a tomato! Hehe
You both hit it off that day, spending the remaining time you had, to talk and have fun.
“ When I saw you that day, I felt like you were the one for me” You warmly smiled, “So..would you like to… get to know each other?” You proposed.He didn’t hesitate to give you his number after that.
Ever since then, you both would spend your free times chatting through your phones. Sending voice emails throughout the busy day, and depriving yourselves from sleep at night.
You two decided to hit it off officially after a month of mutual talking. Secretly meeting each other when Shan Yue takes a job outside the exile land. Because he was that desperate to physically see and be with you!
And when you visit him, you would always bring him delicious food and drinks. You always make sure he gets to eat a proper meal. LOOK at him, he's so thin! It breaks your heart seeing his sunken eyes, and very frail look. So you vowed to properly take care of him! (also giving him and Ah Chun, things they might need, including vitamins)
Your love may be tragic and forbidden, but that does not stop you both from falling even harder!

What you two originally had was a meticulously arranged marriage between your families.
Your family were the new money in the Celestial city, supporting Lady Wu and her factions.

You already had a massive crush on him, ever since he came out from the ring tier exam. You thought he was super cool (and cute!), and can’t help admiring him as he leaves. Little do you know that admiration can sprout into a little crush. You even secretly took screenshots of photos of him from the internet! Staring at him warmly from afar.
But as a child the little crush you had for him started to fade, as time passed by.
It only resurfaced years later, when you saw his face on a billboard.

And suddenly, all your (digital) memories of him came rushing back. Butterflies started flapping in your stomach and the air getting caught in your throat, is when you start realizing that you actually loved him.Until now you still do.
But you decided to let go of these feelings, you understood that for someone like him, with a handsome face, flowing wealth and a golden ring. He’s so unreachable to someone like you.
That's why it came as a shock to you, when your parents told you that the head of the Liu family was the one that made the proposal and had already arranged a meeting for both of you the next day. It was unexpected, to think you're gonna bag one the most sought after bachelor, the moment your family became rich.
You definitely won’t let him go.
Stepping out of a luxury car, you spot Liu Zhichuan already at the reserved table, waiting. Your heart leaped a beat after accidentally locking your eyes, he tilted his head as you approached him. He reeks of confidence and charm, back resting on the chair and crossing his ankle over his other knee, as you sat in front of him. Even the way he sits is so hot, it makes your throat dry!
Not wanting to embarrass yourself in front of your future husband, you cleared your throat and elegantly sip your tea.“From now on, I’ll be your fiancee. I hope we can get along before our actual marriage” You tried your best to sound composed. Liu Zhichuan came from a family of old money, holding prestige and honor. He was already wealthy while still being conceived in his mother’s womb. So you can’t afford to look stupid, especially when you’ll be MISSUS Liu!
Even when he scoffs at you, saying that what matters to him is his duty of protecting God’s child. And that he won’t entertain you and your whims, you didn’t care.
“It’s alright, I have nothing against your wishes of protecting Lady Wu’s child” You gently whisper, “ I know I have nothing to help you, but I too want to see a future where everyone has chance to live peacefully” You softly gleam at him, trying to win him over through by having the same firm resolve .
So you hold a soft eye contact, waiting for a few seconds for both the wind and sun to hit you right. “So let’s work harder together, my dear future husband” You watch as his eyes open wide and his body becomes stiff, letting you know that he is HOOKED .
The next phase was quality time. Simply giving him a gift is pointless since he’s rich, even if you try to give handmade ones (I felt like it would be unrealistic.He didn't even ask Su Ye a gift as well). Physical affection is also out of the question, that’s too sudden and too fast.
So you resort on spending each other’s time side by side. Opting to create moments, gain experience and share memories. (Even though he keeps ignoring you whenever you try to reach out to him).
The next place you visited as a ‘date’ was an aquarium. In honesty, he doesn’t actually want to go with you, but he got forced by his father to quote unquote “strengthen marital bond”. So he dragged himself to join your whimsies.
You went around each tank, noting down information and the uniqueness of each ocean creature.
“ You know, you’re like a sea urchin” you blurted, earning an offended side eye from him “Why is that, huh?” He asked.“You’re like a sea urchin, because you’re cold, arrogant and harsh, sometimes prickly to me.When I try to talk to you, you’ll just hum or ignore me. ” you poured out all your annoyances in those words, which made him chuckled “I guess we’re not really that compatible” .
A long silence wafted between you two for a second before you broke it, “ You know, sea urchins are actually very soft on the inside and work very hard to maintain coral reefs”, this time he put justification to your annoyance by letting an emphasizing hum. “ Because despite their appearance, they’re patient and resilient.” you pause before softly murmuring “You’re very patient and very resilient. You take good care of people that are important to you, and prefer to act instead of words” You look him straight in the eyes. Oh those hard obsidian-ruby eyes.
“You are thoughtful, confident, protective and work very hard. I like that about you”, “ what about the cleaning part?” He asked, “I’m not sure either. I just know you’re both purple”. “...” Him.
Zhou Xi (Efrain Neil) - SOULMATE + CHILDHOOD PEN PALS
It happened long ago, when you and your family visited the Insight temple for prayers, where you met him.
A young monk who seems captivated by a child you, throwing a coin in the well.
You two held a minute long eye contact, the surroundings were all blurry and white. The only thing you can see is just him and his sharp jet black eyes that held such a warm gaze.
The reason for visiting the temple was to schedule a house blessing and whilst still on the temple, your family decided to pray for your new beginnings.
But as for you, who were still young back then, find it very unamusing. You really hated it, because you have to leave all your friends behind.And now you're in a new place, a new school and having to introduce yourself among new faces. It has completely drained you.
Being the new kid wasn’t helping, because most kids already have friends or in a friend group. So mostly you ended up alone on your own.
To cheer yourself up, you decided to go to the temple’s well. You heard from the other kids that there is a well that can grant anyone’s wish, so you excuse yourself from your parents and scurry over to find it.
Young Zhou Xi was simply praying alone in the prayer room, when he saw a small silhouette dashing across the building. He wanted to ignore whoever it was, but something tugged at his heartstrings, commanding him to follow them.
Oh he did not regret leaving his prayer, for he saw the most beautiful person his eyes had laid for. He knows this is the first time both of you met, but it felt like you had met somewhere else before.
“Hi” He first broke the silence, slowly approaching you “ What are you doing here?”. You squirmed underneath his soft eyes, after some time you softly said “ I made a wish”. This made him curious, cutely asking “ What kind of wish did you make?”. It took you sometime, fidgeting before meekly replying to him “ I wished for a friend to talk to”, this made the boy light up, as he escorted you to the nearest bench “Really, why?”.
You bashfully revealed all the weights that have been troubling you, from having to move out, missing your old friends to being alone at school. He listened to all of it, patiently and calmly responding to your rants. It was embarrassing really, pouring everything to someone you barely know. So you told him “ You know, you don't have to listen to all that”. This caught him off guard, he looked at you blushingly “ Uhm.. i dont really mind..” he swung his head away and muttered “ not at all”. “Then why?” You asked.
This time it was his turn to turn quiet for a few seconds, before softly speaking “ I don’t know why, but I feel like you are someone who’s special to me” he glanced at you “You feel it too right”. It was your turn to be flustered, short circuited you keep muttering broken words, desperately trying to respond to him, making him chuckle.
“You said you wanted a friend and someone to talk to, right?”, you nodded, “ Then we can be friends” he stood up and reached his hand to you, this made you grin wide, rosy hue burned on your cheeks, as you childishly shook his hand. “No take backs okay?”
You both laugh at this warm moment, soon it was time for you to go. Hearing your parents calling out your name, he asked “Do you have a phone?”. You shook your head “ Though I can write letters for you”, he tilted his head confusingly. Sending letters has fallen from the era now, ever since technology and phones had become the next norm. “I prefer to write letters” you softly look at him, understanding his confusion “It's just that there's something so magical, when writing and receiving handwritten letters” you winked, teasing him “It's also romantic, hehe”. He laughed, shaking his head “Well aren't you a hopeless romantic”
He agreed to the unconventional mode of messaging and gave you one his magpie friend, as the messenger bird. Which already took a great liking to you.
You were so happy and in awe, you suddenly jumped and hugged him really tight. Which made you both become a blushing mess after realizing what you have done and quickly start apologizing.
When you heard your family’s call getting closer, you decided to leave, with one last hug you both said your goodbyes and parted away.
The moment you returned to your room, you began writing him letters. Using the bird he lent you, you two exchange letters almost everyday. After school and after training, the contents within your letters varied. From special moments to worries that's been keep you up at night.
It has been going on for years, that both of you don’t need physical contact to know what the other has been feeling lately. Being able to sense each other, helps the other to know how to comfort.
One time you were upset, after being scolded, a magpie flew down on your windowsill with pretty flowers on his beak and a small note on his feet. The notes was all about how he sensed that you were upset, so he sent some flowers,hoping it would cheer you up.
All the gentle affirmations and trust in his letters made you swoon, you couldn’t help but fall in love. You wondered whether he felt the same as you.
But all that worries vanished, when he came to assist in blessing your new house. He was now super tall, muscular build, had broad shoulders, and yet the only thing that never changed, is how soft his eyes are.

I have been marinating this manhwa ever since ch 20, and I can't believe it's already around ch 90, so I immediately binge read everything.
I came to realization, that such manhwa with both good plot and art style is so underated. There's not a lot of fics!
So I decided to write one, since I always loved writing but never had the courage to post, this is a good opportunity for me to start writing.
