Bangkok has more than 20 royal Buddhist temples — each one commissioned by a different king, each one expressing a different vision of what a sacred place should look like.

Wat Benchamabophit is built entirely from Carrara marble imported from Italy — the same stone used by Michelangelo. Built by King Rama V in 1899, it represents a conscious fusion of traditional Thai temple design with European structural techniques.

The rear courtyard contains one of the most remarkable collections in Bangkok — 52 bronze Buddha images representing different styles and periods from across Thailand, Cambodia and Buddhist Asia. King Rama V assembled this collection deliberately as a survey of Buddhist artistic traditions across the region.

At dawn, monks collect alms in the courtyard outside the gates. The cool white marble surfaces catch the early light differently at each hour of the day.

Wat Saket is home to one of Bangkok's most dramatic landmarks — an artificial hill rising 80 metres above the flat city plain, crowned by a golden chedi enshrining a Buddha relic brought from India by Lord Curzon in 1897.

The hill itself was an accident. King Rama III began a massive chedi here but the soft Bangkok soil collapsed under the weight. The rubble formed a mound, left overgrown for decades, before King Rama IV built a smaller chedi on top. A winding staircase of 318 steps climbs through gardens of frangipani to the gilded terrace at the summit.

During the cholera epidemic of 1820, tens of thousands of bodies were brought here for sky burial. The vulture population of Bangkok grew so large they became a public nuisance.

Wat Arun stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, its central prang rising 79 metres above the waterline. The tower is covered entirely in fragments of Chinese porcelain arranged into intricate floral patterns — what appears as texture from a distance resolves into thousands of individual pieces fitted together by hand.

The temple briefly housed the Emerald Buddha during the Thonburi period (1768–1782) before King Rama I moved it to Wat Phra Kaew across the river. At dawn and dusk the porcelain surface catches the light in a way no photograph fully captures.

Wat Pho is one of the largest and oldest temples in Bangkok, home to the famous Reclining Buddha — a gilded statue 46 metres long, its feet inlaid with 108 auspicious symbols in mother-of-pearl.

The temple predates Bangkok itself, with origins in the Ayutthaya period before being rebuilt by King Rama I in 1788. It is also considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage — stone inscriptions of massage techniques commissioned by King Rama III still line the temple walls today.
