The best way to appreciate where we are today is to pay homage to those who got us there, not so? The groundbreakers, the innovators, the ones with their eyes slightly off target and onto something fresher. One such visionary is one of the founding fathers of our favourite flavour of funk, the immortal Antonio Jobim.
Antonio Carlos Jobim was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the seaside suburb of Ipanema (ring a bell?). After a stint in architecture school and as an architectβs assistant, he pursued his musical career in earnest as he gained experience playing the piano in small clubs called βinferninhosβ. With his classical background, he moved forward from these clubs to positions with the record labels Continental and Odeon, working at that point within the genre of samba and concocting his own compositions. His moment of ascension came when he was asked to write the score for the play 'Orfeu da Conceicçãoβ, which was later made into the film 'Orfeu Negroβ. The sound he created, alongside guitarist Luiz BonfΓ‘, became a sizzling revelation after the film was a raving success. Like the way in which it the people of Brazil, this samba-esque style with subtle American jazz influence was named 'bossa novaβ, meaning 'new waveβ. Growing in leaps and bounds, Antonio went on to compose the hits the world knows today, such as 'Chega de Saudadeβ, 'Samba de uma nota sΓ³" (meaning One-Note Samba), and after stumbling into recognition following an American concert that same year, the legendary song about 'The Girl From Ipanemaβ, with vocals by Astrud Gilberto. Not long after the hype around the craze around bossa nova began to level out, Antonio began to be recognized by critics as a living legend, with his vibes earning him various awards and international acclaim. The legend was laid to rest in 1994, having left his one note in music history.
