Closer.
Possessed | Aulus, Sekhad & Beatrice
Aulus had never dreaded meeting Beatrice before. Â Quite the opposite, he generally looked forward to it. Â Beatrice was one of those souls whom he believed made this world better simply by inhabiting it, and those were people he felt well worth every interaction...but that had been before Sekhad. Â He dreaded, now, what she might think, what she might feel, what she might believe. Â He knew from experience that Sekhad was not going to play this safe and simply let Aulus take the reins, no. Â He would do what he always did: he would insert himself where he did not belong and, as Aulus had bluntly told him: where he was not wanted.
In truth, Aulus had put the meeting off. Â Heâd put it off and put it off and put it off as long as he could, but at last the meeting had arrived and he could not stop it. Â It was, after all, the King of Acleaâs command that everyone be in attendence and Sekhad, eager for the eveningâs entertainment, had made it clear to everyone -- despite Aulusâ best efforts -- that he was not, in fact, ill and both could and would make it to the eveningâs revels.
âYouâre the worst friend you could possibly be,â Aulus hissed as Sekhad strode boldly down the corridor to the Great Hall, despite Aulusâ protests.
âIâm not your friend, remember? Â Iâm a parasite. Â Now, if you donât want to be here, you can sleep, but I have every wish to be here, and now that Iâve seen a painting on this Lady Beatrice, Iâve every wish to meet her. Â Why donât you just marry her and have yourself a good time, for once?â
âItâs not like that!â
âWith that face? Â And that body? Â Youâre an even greater moron than I took you for...which, by the way, is quite the expansive statement.â
Aulus rolled his eyes. Â âIâm well aware.â
âNow shut up. Â Weâre walking in and I mean to look splendid.â
âOf course you do.â
The introductions were got through wearily enough, on Aulusâ end. Â Unlike Sekhad, he had little love of pomp and circumstance, but the moment of true dread arrived when, at last, he came face to face with his friend.
âLady Beatrice!â exclaimed Sekhad, sweeping an exagerated bow with a great, wide grin before Aulus could stop him.
Righting himself, Aulus bit his lip. Â âI...I want to apologize...I-Iâve drunk a bit much...not feeling myself...â
âIn fact,â said Sekhad, taking her hand. Â âIâm feeling better than I ever have. Â But I donât need to tell you how unspeakably dull Iâve always been in our past interactions, do I? Â Come, letâs partake of some refreshment. Â I never really understood the interest of eating until...recently. Â Who knew food tasted like that! Â Come, letâs enjoy ourselves.â
OOC | Aulus, Sekhad, & Cecily
aulus: hi, cecily! howâre you?
sekhad: not that i care
aulus: except that i do
sekhad: but not really
and itâs all coming from the same mouth! just a lil taste of what you can look forward toâŚbliss!
ngl if Cecily ever had a convo with him like this, she would assume that he was a doppelganger haha! thatâs definitely her default when it comes to people acting like they are two different people, because she just assumes that they are and not ⌠1 person actually possessing another lmao
sheâd just be like âdonât worry your secret is safe with me! iâm one tooâ and lasfjldajf
ASSUMES HES A DOPPELGANGER LAKJDSFKLJDSJFKJDSF IM SCREAMMMM I LOVE LKJSDFKLJkfjdasf what a meSS its perfect ldksfjakldsf weirdly, sheâs more right about it than most ppl are just...missing one key ingredient (aka possession laksjdfkljdsf)
IM ONE TOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! sekhad like!!!!!!!! âomg!!!!1 i thought i was alone!!!â aulus like âoh god thereâs two of them...â and cue: absolute chaosâ˘
do we think theyâve met before, btw, or is this their first time meeting, do we think?

OOC | Aulus, Sekhad, & RolandÂ
tfwaulusâ:
ldksfjaksldjfjdskjf omgggg if we play this right, this might manage to become the weirdest dynamic weâve ever writtenâŚwhich is saying a loT tbqh heehee i also feel like aulus will be pulling a james and dropping hella hints that absolutely no one else gets and meanwhile aulus will be sweating and tryna cover it up andâŚdisaster alksdfjlksdflj
alkjflkajflkj OMG!! Also, I feel like Roland does that sometimes, too, and ofc while there isnât anyone to cover it up for him sometimes he realizes that maybe heâs gone a bIT too far with some of his hints and then backtracks on himself and aljflasjflajf this will be gold!!
Anyway, do you think that Aulus has ever met Horatio/Roland before this visit?
IM SCREAMING lsadkjfkldsjfkljdslkjfds but anyway alksjdfkljdsklf as to your question...im not sure lajdskfljd
ok so 1) im totally open to whatever if one works better for you than the other!!!! 2) imma do some out-loud thinking about aulusâ life story so:
aulus was born illegitimate (which was cool in arkhadel, his home country) and, as his mother, the rulerâs, firstborn, was regarded to be the future ruler of arkhadel.  however, aulusâ mom married ocatavian ramsay and mithiria annexed arkhadel etc when aulus was still pr little (given the ages of his legit siblings), and mithiria now trying to press arkhadel to configure to its own laws...and accept ramsay heirs as their future rulers, smth still hotly dbated!!  as a result of all this, aulus has probs spent time most of his time in arkhadel and a bit in mithiria.  i can also see him occasionally going to aclea and traveling around other nations as well (his mama wants him to drum up support for his own future regime, after all...) so!! thatâs him.
now to horatio and roland...horatio is, of course, a drake aviator, so he can whoosh about wherever he likes v quickly...so...tbh actually either way totally works w aulusâ backstory!! Â but, this all does mean heâs much more likely to have met horatio, himself, than roland, but if horatio was traveling w some of his retinue including, say, the turners, roland couldâve easily gone w them, too, so...the olâ switcheroo could also potentially happen in other countries as well so lsdjafkjdsf actually meeting either/or is totally plausible, esp if you think roland has traveled outside aclea w the turners but honestly even if he hasnât!! Â aulus is pr well traveled and, while he probs spend relatively little time in aclea compared to others, he still goes there on occasion, id think
sdkf, sdfkaljsdlf ok so yeah!!!!! having met horatio and roland is totally plausible, but so is having met one or neither of them! so weâre totally open!
so, if pre!sekhad has met roland and/or horatio things might be *drum roll* as follows:
SCENARIO 1: aulus met roland as roland.  ok, so, aulus is pr rich so this makes him a pr good target for any robin hood-ing shenanigans...but heâs also highkey principaled and after taking approx five minute off-road tour of poorer towns/valenmouth slums etc in aclea, he was probs pr disguisted and if he walks in and some dude is stealing stuff that aulus doesnât need (and frankly probs thinks is gaudy and gross af), heâs probs like âwait, you forgot this,â and tosses him his regency!wallet before roland climbs out the window.  whether or not he saw rolandâs face tho idk and/or like roland highway robs him or whatever while heâs riding around tryna get to know the region etc idk but yknow still the same net result.  again, aulus may or may not ever see his face.  alternately: they just met in, like, the market one day or smth and struck up a convo idk but its a more ordinary sort of meeting.  this may or may not be in conjunction w the above...anythingâs possible idk
SCENARIO 2: aulus meets roland!horatio. Â ok so aulus is a prince, right, so either like he gets a nice lil tour the first time he comes to aclea or horatio is summoned to court to subtly ~show off their drakes to foreign powers~ (septimus like âand pls remember to be polite to me bc i have dragons xoxo gossip ramsay), and/or they meet while roland is playing horatio out in the wider world somewhere basically, idk, but however this goes, its actually roland and madness ensues
SCENARIO 3: aulus meets roland AND horatio.  so this gets a part a and a part b.  a) he meets roland as roland and, separately, horatio as horatio (which may or may not include additionally meeting roland as horatio as well) and b) he meets both of them as âhoratioâ
SCENARIO 4: he just plain meets horatio as horatio, no roland involved
SCENARIO 5: he hasnât met either
so, obv any one of these would shift their dynamic now! Â if he has any kind of knowledge of horatio or roland, that has a big difference on their relationship going forward.
SCENARIO 1: he knows roland. Â he doesnât know horatio, so when he meets him...he thinks he ~is roland in disguise and likely assumes there isnât a ~real horatio and its just roland. Â depending on how things go, he may or may not be right in assuming the person heâs met is roland lasdkjfkljdsfj potentially interesting: horatio realizes that this guy clearly knows roland as roland, then giving horatio some potential places he could go w that: either trapping roland and/or aulus, etc. Â and/or he doesnât ~know that he knows roland bc he didnât see his face, see: SCENARIO 5
SCENARIO 2: aulus probs just thinks horatioâs a little...odd????? bc horatio makes all these jokes about himself but heâs also seen the results of horatioâs actions etc in aclea and heâs not about that lakjsdfkjldsf but also that one time he was told to beat someone to death he ~didnât or whatever so yeah not #theworst⢠but could def be better
SCENARIO 3: def getting weird vibes from this guy: one minute heâs one thing, the next heâs another...aulus himself def wonât be giving ppl those vibes in future, no sir
SCENARIO 4: not a fan, no thanks, pls get better
SCENARIO 5: its open season and everything is possible
so yeah???? idk what seems like the most fun/potential but im down w whatever!!! we can aslo mix and match to our heartâs content, or come up w smth entirely new -- im down for whatever!!
Falling Leaves | Aulus & Rebecca
Autumn had arrived. Â With it, cool weather washed all across Aclea in vibrant golds and warm earthy tones as the trees adopted a hybrid green and gold, leaves merrily streaming towards the ground. Â This season was, to Aulus, brilliant and beautiful, but to Sekhad it was a sharp decline as the world turned once again towards winterâs inevitable death. Â Sekhad, let it be known, was no longer an optimist.
Aulus, however, was reveling in the beauty of the day, the coolness of the weather, and the sharpness of the earthy wind. Â Nose and cheeks pink with the wind, he smiled to himself, gaze roving over the tall trees that dotted the Turnersâ lovely landscape. Â Over his time in Aclea, heâd come to love the countryside walks -- as well as their penchant for taking him by Miss Lucyâs house. Â She, he found, was a most prized companion -- though his unwilling counterpart found often an occasion to somehow annoy or insult her as often as not, it seemed, which caused Aulus no end of frustration.
Still, for now, it was just the two of them and Sekhad had strayed into some thoughtfulness while deprived of other company to entertain him, allowing Aulus a brief glimpse of peace, that now all-too elusive emotion.
Spotting another figure walking along the path, however, he felt Sekhad jolt to life with a sigh. Â âBehave yourself,â growled Aulus under his breath and, merrily, the daimon laughed.
âOh, youâd like that, wouldnât you?â
Apprehension girdled Aulus, but there was nothing for it, now. Â Heâd find out the daimonâs intentions sooner or later, one way or the other.
âMiss Turner!â called Sekhad, merrily. Â âIâd ask you what brings you this way, were your destination not relatively easy to guess. Â Have you had a pleasant walk? Â An acquaintance of mine was just remarking upon a kind of fondness for the season but, I confess, I cannot get anything out of it. Â What do you think of the cool weather? Â You must confess all.â
A Plague Upon House Turner || Aulus + Eleanor
Eleanor, at this point, had simply had more than she could take.Â
âNo, no, no!â Eleanor shouted as she ran down the path that lead from her home to the road.Â
âBut Miss EleanorâŚ!â she heard Robert Persimmons exclaimed from behind her. She didnât bother to look back. She knew if he was even trying to keep up with her that he had to look utterly ridiculous.Â
âIâm going to the dragonhold and Mor has told me in no uncertain terms she will eat you if you set one foot inside!â Eleanor hollered over her shoulder as she saw the stone wall that marked the end of the property.Â
Her dragon, Morwenna, had said nothing of the sort. The dragon, somehow, seemed to have a sensibility at times that her rider did not. When Eleanor suggested Morwenna make a snack of Mr. Persimmons, her dragon had reminded Eleanor that was a one way trip to a very unhappy ending for them both.Â
Robert knew nothing of this, however, and as he was clearly terrified of every dragon, docile or not, she knew even the slightest thought of being eaten by a dragon would be a deterrent. There were not many things that would stop Mr. Persimmons dead in his tracks (save tripping over his own feet!) but mentioning her dragon would at leave buy her enough time to escape from his unwanted attentions.Â
Eleanor rounded the corner at a most unladylike speed, not planning to stop until sheâd made it to the old oak tree at the bend in the road, but found herself instead slamming headlong into a figure that was just out of sight behind the stone wall that lined their property.Â
Thrown off balance, Eleanor tumbled to the ground. Her first thought was that she would have to apologize to Cecilyâ sheâd borrowed one of her dresses and had managed to get it dirty before noon! She only hoped she hadnât ripped it as well.Â
âWhat are you doing, lurking around our gate like that?â Eleanor snapped at the stranger, pushing herself off the ground and brushing as much dirty as she could off her skirt before she stood. Finally standing back up, she took in the figure before her and let out a heavy sigh. Aulus Acheson, Prince of Voraena, had found another reason to stroll pass the Turner House.
âYour Highness,â she said dully, curtseying in a dramatic fashion worthy of Rober himself. âForgive meâ we are not used to royalty lurking unannounced by our gate,â she continued, her words laced with heavy sarcasm.Â
Despite being the baby of the family, Eleanor had always been very protective of her sisters but most especially, even when they were very young, of Lucy. All the Turner girls knew how uncomfortable it made their sister to meet and converse with new people, yet the visiting royal seemed to be insistent on speaking with Lucy whenever he could.Â
That, Eleanor supposed, she could forgive. Lucy was, in her opinion, one of the smartest and most interesting people in all of Elsbridge. From all accounts, the prince was well known for his love of books and learning, much like Lucy, and she could only assume the Prince had taken an interest in her sister because of that. What Eleanor could not forgive was the Princeâs unpredictable temperamentâ which theyâd all experienced! From being kind and cordial one minute to sarcastic and sardonic the next, it was like having a conversation with two completely different people.Â
âIf youâre looking for my sister, she has gone to return some books she borrowed from the Astleyâs library. I have simply no idea when she shall return, but I am sure our illustrious houseguest, Mr. Persimmons, would be more than happy to keep you company should you wish to wait.â
BOOM! Â The force of Eleanorâs body hurled headlong into him might have threatened to knock Aulus over, had Sekhad -- ever mindful of his daimonic dignity -- not prevented the thing. Â Still, the force of the collision (particularly paired with the shock of it as he had been at the time unwittingly turning a corner,) knocked the air from Aulus and gasping, he did not even have time to help prevent the lady from toppling, herself, as he grasped the nearby gate, collecting himself.
Sekhad, however, required no such recovery. Â âLurking?â demanded the daimon, indignantly. Â âMy dear girl, I do not lurk, such is the domain of petty thieves and failed, would-be librarians,â he added, with disdain towards his human counterpart. Â (Aulus sighed.) Â âI am most certainly not that.â
He paused. Â âAs for the reason, a foolish acquaintance of mine had quite gotten it into his head to call upon Miss Lucy but, I must say, I should much rather confer with you. Â Of the two sisters, you seem the more spirited, a quality which I find refreshing in any entity.â
âI am always pleased,â interjected Aulus, displaying the strange penchant he seemed to have for constantly interrupting himself. Â âFor any opportunity to converse with anyone of your family. Â It is always a pleasing thing to find likeminded people so far from home, but particularly those with such intriguing life experiences as your entire family may boast. Â I have known many wonders, Miss Turner, but to be a dragonrider must, I think, be a thing entirely set apart. Â I wonder -- would you someday do me the honor of introducing me to your dragon? Â Iâve never seen one up close, little less had an introduction, and I understand they are the most amazing creatures in our world.â
It was Sekhadâs turn to sigh, but, perceiving the danger as Mr. Persimmonsâ voice rang out in breathless shocks from somewhere beyond Eleanor, he grimaced.
âHeaven forbid,â Sekhad muttered as she said that Mr. Persimmons would entertain him.  âMiss Turner, if you have mercy upon me, I shall show you the same in kind and, together, we may rid ourselves of your âillustrious houseguestâ for the entirety of our interview.  Am I not, after all, meant to be the Prince of Voraena, and you a draconic aviatrix?  May we together not collude and give him to understand that there are secret national matters which we must discuss privily?  What do you say?â he asked, eyes dancing with a strange kind of bemusement all his own.
âWhich devil will you dance with, this afternoon?  Your houseguest, or a lurking prince found astray by your gate?  I must say, I would add variety to your drudgerous conversations, as you see far less of me than of him.â  He glanced beyond her.  âHeâs coming round the bend, Miss Turner.  What do you say?  You would be forgiven for not knowing it, given the bookish inclinations of my reputation, but I can prove a most formidible opponent when Iâve a mind, and I doubt Mr. Persimmons should find his way around me, should you choose me for your champion.  So, who shall it be?â
What Do we Do with a Handsome Sailor || Arya x Aulus/Sekhad
Arya Abassi was in terrible, terrible trouble. With a great sigh the young princess laid down upon a feather-soft fainting couch located in Aulusâ receiving room and slung an arm across her eyes. âSincerely, what am I meant to do?â She muttered. âI thought he was dead or gone off into the world or had forgotten all about me! Who would have believed that Owen Clarke of all people would be in Aclea?!â Quickly Arya stood back up, pacing back and forth about the room. Her fingers laced and unlaced about each other. She worried upon the corner of her lips. Sat down. Stood up once more. âTruly, Aulus. I know even without looking at you that you must have some snide remark upon your tongue but I pray you keep it to yourself.â A flush came over her cheeks once more at the memory of Owen silhouetted against the early morning sky. âI do thank you, though, for your assistance in allowing me a moment to converse with him in private. We had not seen each other for ten years and had much to speak of.â She glanced back at the young prince, tall and languid and certainly pleased with himself for this newly acquired knowledge. âSincerely, Iâ I was pleased to see him, as a dear friend I had once known. Nothing more. I am a princess of Harmanil, and I have a duty and reason I have come to this place. I could not â not that I wish to â think of Mister Clarke in any other light than a delightedly newfound friend.â Even Arya herself could hear how hollow those words rang, but still she turned to look out the window towards the sea, hoping perhaps⌠just perhaps⌠if Aulus believed her, she could convince herself of the same lie.Â
Arya was in luck just now or, perhaps -- out of it. Â Aulus, himself, was asleep, meaning that Sekhad, for better (or likely) for worse, had complete control of the body. Â Sitting across from her, wearing an expression half of mischief and half of sarcasm, his dark, dancing eyes gazed incisively at her prone form. Â His one leg was thrown over the other, his gold-embroidered jacket cast radiantly upon his form, his person exquisitely groomed such that the chair upon which he sat seemed transformed entirely into a throne.
Bemused, he smiled, casting his gaze out the window before returning his ageless gaze to her. Â âIâm afraid youâve come to much the wrong being for advise,â he purred, eyes narrowing. Â âI only ever counsel trouble. Â Itâs far more interesting, donât you think?â
His brows arched and he barked out a laugh. Â âKeep it to myself? Â Where would be the fun in that? Â If you did not wish to hear my quips, child, I daresay you would have gone elsewhere.â Â He sighed, tapering fingers closing over the edge of the armrest thoughtfully. Â âOr perhaps,â he muttered to himself, a mite irritable. Â âYou really wanted his advice.â Â He meant, of course, Aulus who was, in general, far more helpful but, in Sekhadâs immortal estimation, far less amusing.
Standing, he marched over to her, placing both his hands upon her shoulders, his native arrogance shining in his eyes. Â âTruly, Arya, you have a soul that longs for more. Â Love always betrays us in the end, I assure you. Â You were better off before he reappeared.â
Pacing away from her again, he moved towards the window. Â His voice, when he spoke, was cold, devoid of its usual color, emotion. Â âMy advice? Â Push him out a window, set him aflame: have your fun and be done with him. Â Your queendom is where immortality lies not,â he waved a dismissive hand. Â âSo-called love. Â You can loose your soul in longing for it and, even when you most cling to it, find you never had it at all.â Â He turned to face her again, hands locked behind his back, eyes dark and flinty. Â âTake it from me.â
As she thanked him, however, his usual languidity rolled slowly over his shoulders once more and, shortly, he laughed. Â âOh, that. Â I assure you, Arya, I shall always be there to help you give in to your weaknesses. Â I hold nothing with so-called propriety. Â It is a sham. Â The only truth is inside us, not without. Â And, besides, it will make a fine story, if it does get out,â he teased, eyes dancing, now, darkly teasing. Â âEven if it does ruin you.â
Sighing as she spoke of her Mr. Clarke, he pressed his eyes shut. Â His own love life had created the worst situation for him heâd ever known. Â He hoped he did not see her (willingly, no less!) walk down the same path. Â Still, her eyes were glowing and Sekhad was not so heartless as he liked to seem. Â âGo on, then. Â Tell me. Â Did you two manage to settle things? Â Is he still as dream-worthy as he seemed when you were but a girl?â
He laughed.  âThat is a fine speech, but you may wish to try convincing yourself, before trying to convience me.â  His was a dancing gaze, eyeing her knowingly for a moment before returning to his chair, to seat himself with all his usual stately assurance.  âSo, tell me true: how long have you loved him?â

Bridgerton Season 2 (2022)
Emma. (2020)
Just Ask | Aulus, Sekhad, & Lucy
The daimon was silent, just now, a wonderful kind of blessing as far as Aulus was concerned, both from its rarity and from his own particular dislike to the entity in question. Â Daylight streamed upon his shoulders with pleasant warmth while a cool breeze kept the temperature quite as he might have wished, and Aulus felt almost like himself again, almost as if his mind and his body were entirely his own. Â Oh, that was an illusion he knew well enough, but some wistful part of him indulged it.
As he moved along on his pleasant countryside stroll, he spotted another figure along the path. Â The person, it seemed, was a lady.
Itâs Lucy Turner, said the daimon within their shared brain, breaking the tranquil silence.
Canât I have a moment of peace?
Oof, how lovers do quarrel. Â I can ask her to go away if sheâs disturbing you.
Not her! Â You. Â Be quiet!
Shall I send a billow of air her way to knock her over that you might gallantly come to her rescue?
What! Â No! Â Of course not! Â Donât you have any concept of decency?
Iâm afraid not.
And, just like that, she was upon them. Â Aulus swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure. Â He bowed politely. Â âGood morning, Miss Turner. Â Fine weather weâre having, isnât it?â
âThough,â drawled Sekhad, aloud. Â âI canât reasonably take full credit for that.â
Aulus fought to keep his expression neutral. Â âI was headed to Elsbridge. Â I hear thereâs a library there, but you might be better acquainted with its contents than I. Â Is it a good library, or would I do better to peruse private libraries? Â Lady Astley did invite me to look in on hers, one of these days. Â What is your opinion, Miss Turner?â
âValenmouth,â said Sekhad. Â âHas an immense library. Â But, unfortunately, it is peopled with the constituents of, well, Valenmouth, and Iâm afraid I canât long abide their tiresome backbiting without growing weary. Â Can you?â
Aulus sighed.
Eleanor was her savior.
âMaria was chattering about going through your dresses today. Apparently the fact you spoke to a Prince for all of two minutes necessitates an entirely new wardrobe,â Eleanor as she nearly dragged Lucy down the back stairs. âYou have minutes to make yourself scarce lest you spend your entire day at the seamstress!â
Lucy did not need to be told twice, darting through the back garden, her home disappearing from view as she slipped onto the familiar path she often took to the Rebelâs Library.
Maria had been absolutely beside herself with glee after the Astleyâs dinner soirĂŠe a few nights previous when Lucy had spoken, albeit briefly, with the guest of honor the Prince of Voraena, Aulus Acheson. Despite Lucyâs assurances that their interaction was brief, it had been a daily discussion since the incident occurred.
Lucy didnât bother to try and tell Maria how odd she found the Prince. At first he had actually put her at ease, his countenance and smile kind. Then, in an instant, he had said something off putting which made Lucy wonder why he had even bothered to converse with her in the first place.
Regardless of the reason, the last thing Lucy wanted was any new gowns. She found anything beyond her daily simple dresses extreme uncomfortable and the thought of what Maria would chose to dress her up in to try and attract the Princeâs attention during his stay in Elsbridge was more than the quiet young woman could take.
It was almost comical that as she made her way down the familiar path she should come across the exact person Maria had set herself in a tizzy over.
Lucy managed what she could only assume was a quite awkward curtesy at the Princeâs greeting. Maria would be utterly joyous if she knew Lucy had come upon the prince entirely by accident, not to mention that he remembered and could recognize her dressed as plainly as she was that day.
Blinking a few times, slightly confused by his statement regarding the weather, Lucy found her voice to reply. âQuite fine weather, yes, your Highness. You have come to Elsbridge at a most lovely time, now that the winter seems to have finally made its departure.â
Lucy herself had been making her way to the rebelâs library, which was much more tolerable in the warm months. She had hoped, perhaps, she would meet Roland along the path so that she might update him of Robertâs antics the night before. To her, there was no greater library in all of Elsbridge but she supposed that was because it was most often empty save herself.
âThe Elsbridge library? I suppose it depends on what subject you are hoping to look intoâŚâ Lucy had spent many an hour in the Elsbridge library, though not so much as of late as Sebastian Talbot had a knack for finding her there. She was beginning to run out of ways to explain their interactions to her sisters and had taken to simply avoiding him at all cost.
âRegardless, you should take Lady Ashley up on her offer. Iâve had the privilege of visiting myself a number of times and, if nothing else, it is a relaxing place to spend an afternoon.â
And then he spoke of Valenmouth and itâs citizens in such a way that seemed in stark contrast to the pleasant discussion of libraries. Lucy knew she needed to keep her guard up or else sheâd leave every conversation with a sense of whiplash.
âIâve only managed to visit the library at Valenmouth once, with my father,â Lucy informed the prince. âThe scholars, apparently, find the presence of an unaccompanied woman unnerving and I shouldnât wish to bother my father with something as silly as spending the day in a library⌠but I do remember it being magnificent.â
Aulus watched a familiar sight: a person of reason begin to doubt his own. Â Heâd learned to pick out all the signs quite early into his rather odious relationship with Sekhad: the slight crinkling of the eyes, the softest dip of the lips. Â Thanks to his station in life, the doubts rarely progressed visibly or audibly beyond this half uncertain, half pained look and perhaps at times the softest sound of a sigh, yet Aulus tended to think it should have proven easier to bear had doubts been expressed more forcefully. Â Then, he might have had an opportunity to deflect them. Â Yet, doubtless, even that his unwanted companion would decimate in one way or another.
Biting his lip, Aulus glanced away. Â It was his turn to breathe a small sigh and, despite himself, he suppressed a small laugh. Â This, he thought with a flash of wry humor, was a truly ridiculous situation.
Turning his glance back towards the lady, he nodded softly as she spoke dully of the weather; somehwat more energetically of the books, though even this was constrained. Â He could not particularly fault her for finding all this uncomfortable -- he found it so, himself -- but he hoped that this feeling was more on Sekhadâs account than on his own...a mystery, he conceded to himself, that he was unlikely to uncover so long as this arrangement persisted.
âOh,â he admitted with a small laugh. Â âI confess, Iâve a taste for every subject when it comes to the written word, to knowledge. Â What are our lives but an effort to better understand them? Â If we do not understand each other, understand the seas and sky and the blades of grass all around us, what have we really achieved?â Â He glanced down, chuckled softly. Â âBut, I suppose, in this particular instance, Iâve the greatest object of better understanding Aclea.â
Sekhad laughed, quirking a brow at her. Â âI perceive that my manners are seen here as...strange. Â You think me strange, I daresay, Miss Turner?â Â His eyes glittered with mischief.
Quickly, Aulus glanced away, grimacing. Â âNot,â he added, pointedly. Â âThat I should consider it my right to pry into the private thoughts and feelings of any other person.â
âA strange notion, no,â added Sekhad, laughing. Â âIn one who may one day rule others.â
Aulusâ expression was pained. Â He could hardly disagree more, but he was conscious that the appearance of disagreeing with himself would make this situation, well, worse, and thus found himself at a loss for words for a moment.
âOr so,â he supplied, at last. Â âSome say. Â I, myself, view rulers as servants of their people. Â But I doubt as I shall ever have the opportunity, myself. Â My siblings, I think, will prove far more desirable heirs to my motherâs reign.â
Sekhadâs laugh was satirical but, luckily, he said nothing more on the subject, instead turning his attention to Lucy with a look of bald curiosity. Â âWhat subjects, Miss Turner, most occupy your studies? Â Youâve the look, I think, of a hungry mind behind those eyes. Â What secrets would you feign uncover? Â Histories? Â Magics? Â Scandals? Â All readers wish to know something more, donât they?â
Hearing her concerns about the Valenmouth library, Aulusâ brows crinkled with concern. Â âThat, I must say, is an advantage we in Arkhadel have over you here -- ladies are welcome as can be amongst the vaulting shelves. Â Yet, that being so, perhaps...perhaps if your father proves busy and you should like to go, I could escort you to the library? Â I doubt anyone would question us, and Iâve a love of old books and should like to further explore the place...the...people notwithstanding,â he added, attempting to assuage Sekhadâs earlier comment about them without appearing to actively contradict himself.

the levels of identity confusion that could potentially go on here!!  that awkward moment when roland thinks heâs talking to aulus who thinks heâs talking to horatio, but actually heâs talking to sekhad, etcâŚim crYING

OOC | Aulus, Sekhad, & Beatrice
aulus like beatrice is a gd angel and a treasure!!!!! and sekhad like âsheâs certainly pretty but sheâs soâŚnice, itâs such a shameâ sljflkdkf
HAHAH omg such a shameÂ
So, I feel like Beatrice would definitely like Aulus alot and I can see them being friends! But Sekhad kinda makes things a little more complicated and if she didnât meet Aulus until he was possessed, I think sheâd be a lot more ?!??! about him, for obvious reasons, haha.Â
How long has Aulus been in Aclea/do you think that he and Beatrice have ever met before/how long has he and Sekhad been a 2 for 1?Â
omg them being friends!!!! how cuteeeee! dlasfkjdskjfdsf making things complicated is what sekhad does best he takes it as a compliment...and a challenge alkdjsfkjldsf
that!! is a great question!! lskdjfasljkd so i do think Aulus visits Aclea every so often and this is def not his first venture here, but generally when heâs here its at court w his mama, which has probs been happening since she married octavian ramsay about...im gonna say 30ish years ago, so yeah!! its v possible that beatrice and aulus ~have met before since theyâre both from noble families, etc? its even possible theyâve known e/o for some time, all that considered, in which case bea might be how he met lucy? or at least first heard of her, or whatever?
as for the package deal w sekhad hahaha i feel like thatâs far more recent, but not like ~brand new, imma say...6mo to a year, probs? Â that being said, aulus has ~just arrived in valenmouth for this season, pr much the moment i scooped him up im gonna say
âi read this book because of youâ iâm in love with you too
