Who Even Are You.
mysterysciencetheatre9000:
Already the boy’s sass was getting to the wayfaring shifter, but he urges himself to remain calm. He can't keep getting upset when on deliveries, especially if his own financial situation is on the line. Every single bit and piece of bartering ware was crucial, and couldn't be lost simply because he lost his undeniable cool whilst on a simple job. He breathes in, then out, mentally speaking a mantra thrice before taking a few gradual steps forward.
Hal speculates the small pool wherein the customer had taken residence and thought it was a decent idea for someone to do so, though he imagined the heat would require the water to be changed several times to remain nice and chilled in comparison to the very weather that elicited such an action. Nevertheless, he likes the idea. He brandishes his bag after a moment and flips it open, rummaging through it before tugging out a small, translucent blue stone.
“For spells of protection and elemental, I think. I could assume blue stands for water or ice, but it could be any number of things. And you must simply forgive me for being so brash. Usually, I am faced with the chore of knocking on the door and waiting for someone to answer as opposed to finding someone lingering outside. My suspicions weren’t needed, of course, but I feel they are at least justified. You can call me Hal, I guess.”
Every word that falls from his lips sounds like a lie, and it’s almost too sad how thickly laid out his sarcasm is. For such a small form, he sure has a lot of it brewing around. His make-up is probably 98% sarcasm. “I forgot the name of the dude who ordered this for you, but I’ll assume his name’s in your head. Nice little set up, by the way. On a scale from one to ten, how would you rate how frozen your ass is.”
Dave raises his eyebrows, eyeing the dude and looking him over from head to toe. He approves, seems like, because he doesn’t respond with outright hostility to the amount of sass that the mailman is serving him right back to him, practically begging for the rapport that Dave considers himself to be so good at.
“Oh, yeah- I’ve been waiting for that for ages, I thought it’d gotten lost in transit.” He holds out his hands, one for the clipboard or whatever so he can sign for the item. “Thanks for asking- the water’s great, you should totally join me. I’m sure I can make it bigger.” There’s the general impression that he just winked, but behind his shades, Hal really has no way of telling.
“In all seriousness, though, the water is actually pretty warm. I’ve been in here for a while- I was actually about to cast a chilling spell when you arrived- although that might have actually like, literally frozen my ass, I dunno. Never tried.” His magic goes a little overboard sometimes; usually he’s able to control it, but sometimes he ends up with things like frozen asses and coats that catch on fucking fire because he wasn’t specific on how fucking warm he wanted to be.
It’s a matter of trial and error. With lots of error.
insidiousodyssey:
Jake worms around in the pond a little, the big lion paws coming to rest on the bank of the pond. ‘Well, I went to the Outer Continent once and when I was scaling the cliffs above the waters, I saw this and I thought it was just soooo cool looking!’
His voice is more of an echo of thoughts resonating through Dave’s mind and bouncing off their surroundings, sounding like something from a dream more than from reality, deeper than his normal voice, sounding a little ancient.
“Huh. I’ve been to the ocean, but I’ve never seen stuff like that before.” He’s seen a couple of manticore-looking things, and maybe things that look sort of like wyverns, but bird-sized(it was at a distance; he couldn’t tell if they were actually birds or not), but not like this giant blue lion.
Fucking rad.
He heaves a sigh. “Man, I wish I could shapeshift. That’d be awesome. Can you imagine the shit I could do? But- wait, can you only shapeshift into stuff you’ve already seen?” Dave can transmute things into other things, as long as they have the same mass, but he can’t make new things.
insidiousodyssey:
The shark’s mouth curls into something akin to a grin, teeth out and visible as he swims around Dave’s head in circles, trying to poke at the bubble with his nose a little, but carefully and not enough to pop it, his beady little eyes eying him all the time.
Once again, he swims away after a while, this time as far as he can so he can indeed try the last beast he has once met when hiking on the cliff above the ocean. He only saw it from the top, but it is enough for him to try and shapeshift into an exact replica of the very same creature. What appears to be a lion in deep blue colour with golden mane around his head and tail. The creature is very big and barely fitting into the pond, head about half the size of Dave.
Dave rubs Jake’s nose when he comes to poke his bubble, fingers trailing over his rough skin as he circles. This is so cool, gosh.
And then Jake shifts into something new, and he has to resurface and look up at him in awe, the bubblehead spell breaking along with his focus. “Holy shitballs,” he whispers, a grin spreading across his face. He gets out of the pond, which is slightly bigger now due to displaced water. “Where’d you see that?”
Who Even Are You.
mysterysciencetheatre9000:
The first thing Hal can’t stand is the fact that everyone and their whole family of twelve seems to be out and about. The crystalline beaches are crowded with several people, creatures, species. The dull roar of the mixed bag before him makes his head spin, though the reason doesn’t remain in noise alone. The second thing he can’t stand is the heat. The impossible heat practically drilling into specifically him, making him sweat an unhealthy amount and his throat parched for water.
The somewhat renowned shifter tries his best to walk past the invitingly cool waters, no doubt having the capability of cooling him down and making him feel a little less inadequate. He flicks his gaze toward the crowds and his nose catches the scent of various different sweets and snacks some vendors have set up along the rocky pillars to the sides of the beach. Colours shift like those of the water, most of them coming from unhappy magicians conjuring up a few strangely patterned umbrellas or towels. It seems to be the only thing keeping them occupied.
Without staring for much longer, Hal decides it is best to simply move on into town. Several cottages sit on the rocky faces of what could be mountains. The corrosive rains could have very well melted them down into the stumpy hill-like formations he seems to be looking at. The paths are not cobbled like the ones in his town, and are instead smooth, warming the soles of his boots and making him wonder if they’ll begin to stick to the ground. The sun continues to beat down on the pavement meant for crudely built automobiles, waves practically visible from where he walks.
Aside from the harsh condition of the light above, Hal finds the rest of the day fairly nice. With everyone occupying the beach, he’s hardly bumping into strangers. His hood is pulled up and over his head, though one can see the soft curls of his hair sticking out from under the protective cover. Brightly glowing carnelian eyes flick here and there, taking in his surroundings and looking for markings that matched the melting scrawlings on the palm of his hand. If it weren’t for magic, Hal would have lost his way, forgetting instantly which house to go to. His informants had told him that the residence wasn’t a permanent one, but Hal understood. Not everyone is able to stay in one place.
The shifter stops in front of a slightly secluded house, knocking on the door a few times. In his bag, the parcel he was meant to deliver shifts, signifying the movement of it’s carrier. After getting no immediate reply, he knocks again, attempting to locate the person’s current location. He couldn’t have been at the beach, could he? Hal swears he’s going to lose it. There’s an unfamiliar form settling beside the apparently vacant home, and he approaches this other being, quirking a brow. “And who in Earth’s name are you?”
It is another oppressively hot day. No surprise, since there seems to be a surplus of them lately- enough to officially call this a heat wave, he thinks. It sucks, which is why he’s been thinking about heading to the beach today, but.... thinking about doing something and actually doing it are two very different things, especially for Dave. Mostly he’s just been lying on his bed and wondering if he’s going to get heat stroke or something, fanning himself with a fan he made out of paper.
Perhaps he could set up something in his yard? No, he forgot- his hose busted a while ago, so not only is the grass all yellow and dead, but he can’t blow up the kiddie pool or anything.
He gets the ingenious idea to use buckets.
Twenty minutes later, he’s in his swim trunks and chilling in the ridiculously-too-small kiddie pool, an umbrella stuck in the ground next to him and his shades doing their absolute best to do their job to shield his eyes. It’s heaven, basically, or at least until the water gets warm. He can probably just cast a cooling spell, but those tend to make things a little too chilly.
Dave looks up when someone approaches, squinting at the dude and raising an eyebrow a little at his question. “I’m Dave Strider- I live here. Real question, who the fuck are you?”

What about magic? He can use it to capture a picture, can’t he? At least it seems probable that he should have.
Jake parts away in his dolphin form and swims away once again, this time shape-shifting into one of the smaller reef sharks that aren’t even that much dangerous. He swims back to Dave, moving around him constantly, although slowly, letting his dorsal fin grace the surface of the water like in all those movies about sharks. Excluding Sharknado. That was a wreck from the start to the finish.
He cannot really do any tricks like this, but it certainly looks cool and maybe Dave could try to look at it under water. Both the shark and the shifting process. Jake certainly knows what he is doing and if he had his voice he would probably try to imitate the Jaws theme song right now.
Shit, that’s a great idea, but Dave hasn’t thought of it. He’ll probably think of it later and kick himself. Hard. But hey, there’s more opportunities in the future!
Dave does the Jaws theme for him, his grin back, and once he’s done that once, he casts a bubble-head spell and ducks underwater. A bubble of air surrounds his head, allowing him to breathe, and he gets a good look at Jake, trailing a hand along the shark’s leathery skin.
Jake grins once Dave figures out that he is a shapeshifter, lifting his head out of the water, nodding.
“Yeah. I though I was being obvious. I don’t think you would meet any of those here. And yes, it’s quite wicked, ” he keeps grinning and takes a deeep breath, using his hands to help himself submerge, swimming a little away from Dave, firstly shape-shifting into a dolphin.
As soon as his transformation is done, he jumps out of the water and over the rock, making dolphin sounds. He swims closer to Dave and circles around him, halfway in the water and halfway out so Dave can see him and if he wante, touch his smooth grey skin. After a while, he parts away only to fo more tricks he has seen dolphins do before, back on Earth, trying to figure out how they work as he goes before returning to Dave, poking his chin with his head.
He once again makes more dolphin sounds, flipping his back fin and occasionally hitting Dave’s legs with it at an awkward angle. That although doesn’t make the experience any less enjoyable and it is definitely worth capturing.
Dave’s eyes are wide behind his shades, and he watches as Jake swims a fair distance away in order to shapeshift into a fuckin’ dolphin and oohhh dear lord that’s fucking cool. He grins for the first time that day, reaching out to touch Jake’s grey, clammy skin. When Jake does tricks, he hoists himself up onto the rock and applauds, still grinning, before slipping back into the water.
“Pff, be careful with that thing,” he snorts, grin fading into a wry smirk as he pushes back against Jake’s fin gently. He wishes he could take pictures of this moment, as a third party, but he can’t and that makes him kind of sad, but at the same time, he knows he’ll never forget this.
“Well, hm, have you ever seen a dolphin? Or a shark? Bet you haven’t seen the Kraufis’ Captain!” He grins and swims a little away from Dave, waiting for his response so he too can show off his cool abilities when it comes to magic. Although.. he has never really tried to transform into a tide born creature, so he is not really sure whether it comes with the ability to breathe under water. He really hopes so, because then this would be awkward as hell.
While patiently waiting, he submerges the lower half of his face, trying to give himself gils as a shape-shifting attribute. Okay, wow..that works, but wow, even his lungs had to change for that. Also it’s kind of.. very weird to be breathing liquid.
He shifts them away as soon as possible, spitting out the rest of the water, taking a deep breath afterwards. Never again. Well… maybe, now that he knows how it feels.
“Uh.... No, I haven’t. I mean, yeah, I’ve seen dolphins in pictures, but not in person. Why? Are you going to show me a dolphin?” He’s definitely curious, now, and he watches as Jake submerges part of his face seemingly for no reason.
And then it clicks and his eyes widen, a tiny gasp leaving him. “Shit, you’re a shapeshifter? Why the hell didn’t you tell me earlier, that’s cool as fuck!” He’s always liked the idea of shapeshifting, and he’s tried a lot of spells in the past to try to shapeshift, but to no avail. Something about that kind of magic just isn’t available to him, and he sometimes wonders if that’s something that applies to all magic-users that aren’t shapeshifters. It’s something he could look into...
Fascinated, Jake wathes as Dave’s spell deattaches the cranium from the skeleton’s spine and cleans it off. Wow, that certainly is something! One day, he is going to have to invite Dave over and show him his own collection of different skulls. Maybe they will end up exchanging some - yeah, that sounds like a past-time of a valuable member of society, right? Right.
For a moment, he gets distracted from his thoughts, catching himself staring at Dave stripping. Oh, uh, wow. He looks way to save at least some of Dave’s decency, blinking when Dave jumps into the water. He indeed doesn’t notice Dave’s eyes, too busy stripping. He tosses his clothes at another rock on the surface, slipping into the cool water with a rather loud ‘splooch! ’, swimming underneath the water’s surface.
His head soon pops out near the rock Dave is sittng on, splashing him a little. “The water is great, indeed! Come back in and I’ll show you something cool! ” And by something cool he means shape-shifting into either one of the sharks and dolphins he has seen by the coral reefs back on Earth or something much, much more dangerous - like a sea lion. No the one that looks like a seal, but one that looks like an actual lion, except it lives in water and is about eight meters long.
The humans that once lived on earth would call them vultures, of a community that labeled their collective hobby as “vulture culture”, using all parts of an animal, including the bones, so as to respect the animal itself. Dave may not use /all/ of the deer-creature, due there being not a lot left of it, but the skull sure looks nice. Perhaps there’s an equivalent on this planet, but Dave wouldn’t know, since he hasn’t looked into it.
In any case, it’s totally a pastime of a valued member of society. Pretty normal, by some peoples’ standards.
He splashes Jake back, snorting a little at the childish gesture, and slips back into the water. “Like what?”
“Ah, I was right! One of them magic folk!” He grins brightly before looking up at Dave as he takes pictures of the long gone deer. “You collect skulls? Me too - I love them - but yes, take it! You never know when you are going to find one of them, ” Jake smiles at him and pats his shoulder, generally showing his interest in what Dave is doing and in his hobbies.
“Would you like to stay here for a while? I mean, after you are done disconnecting the skull from the poor fella’s body,” he grins slightly and moves closer to the water, jumping on one of the wet stones, surprisingly not slipping and keeping his balance well. “You know, sometimes I wonder how would it be if we lived underwater - like tideborn! By the coral reefs. Have you ever been by the reefs? I remember grandma took me diving several times.. it was so pretty.. ”
He sighs and sits down on the flat rock, leaning over the water to peek down under himself at the white sand and clear water. Oh, how he could just slip in right now and go for a swim!
Dave nods, and with a few murmured words and a wave of his hand, the head is detached from the rest of the body. Another word, and the skin and flesh just sort of... peel off- like that one M.C. Escher painting- to leave behind a clean white skull, which he sends home.
(It feels basely /good/, to have someone interested in his weird hobbies and stuff. Of course, you would be hard pressed to get him to admit to the warm fuzzies he's currently feeling due to Jake's interest.)
He watches as Jake jumps from onto the rocks, humming softly to himself. After a moment of consideration, he peels off his shirt and pants to leave just his boxers on. He climbs on top of one of the rocks, a bigger one(more of a boulder, really), and jumps off, folding his limbs into a gangly brown cannonball on the way down. The splash he makes is somewhat impressive, and he resurfaces sans sunglasses. Fuck.
"C'mon in, the water is great," he calls, before diving down to look for his shades in the turbulent water. He hopes Jake didn't see his eyes, but it's improbable that he did, at this distance, so he isn't duly worried. Even in this world, eyes of his color are uncommon except as temporary aesthetic or fashion or costume choices, done through illusion magic by mages or witches and through shapeshifting by, well, shapeshifters. He's not going to expend his energy on an illusion spell to hide his eyes when shades work just as well, though.
Again he resurfaces, this time with shades, and swims over to one of the rocks, hoisting himself up onto the surprisingly flat surface. The cool water is a perfect counter for the hot day, and he feels like maybe later he'll let himself float on the surface of the pool for a while. Maybe.

Dave trails after him, just a few steps behind as he tries to remember what exactly he took a picture of last and fuck, he forgot to get a picture of the phoenixflower, fuck fuck fuck.
He runs back and crouches down to take several pictures from different angles, and then he jogs back over to Jake and hellllll yeah. Objective complete. He opens the camera up, floating it in front of him as he walks instead of letting it hang on its strap so he can keep it steady. He can just…. develop these with magic. Yes, it’s cheating, but he’s impatient and he wants to see how they turned out now.
“Hm? Oh, uh… yeah, sure, you can see.” There’s a flash and a bit of heat, and then there’s an array of Polaroid pictures, fully developed and dry from hanging on the string at home, floating in circles around Dave’s head and shoulders as he continues to walk. “Pick some out and take a look. You can just, uh, put them back when you’re done, I’ll catch them.”
"Oh, that’s so cool! Are you one of the magic users? What kind?” He blinks and reaches out to take a picture from all the floating ones inspecting it closely - literally - he has to hold it pretty high up to his face, but mostly because he wants to, mumbling something under his breath silently. They are most likely the words of quiet adoration and jealousy over the nice picture. He soon returns it and keeps taking them one by one to inspect them.
He doesn’t even look where he is going, but he trusts his feet that they will lead them to the right place and yes, indeed, in no more than half an hour, they wind up by the place Jake was talking about before. A small spring - lake with crystal clear sparkling water and white sand on the very bottom - and a couple of cascading waterfalls all ending up in the spring. It is truly a sight to marvel and he steps aside to let Dave take pictures of it if he wants.
He himself moves a little bit to the side, inspecting a carcass of a deer-like creature. It is mostly meatless, but there is still quite some fresh blood. “Gosh darn! If we came like three hours earlier, we could have caught a blasted mountain lion feeding! ”
“Huh? Yeah, I’m a mage.” He can’t pretend he doesn’t hear the tone of the words, at least, and he’s happy that someone besides himself likes his pictures. Nobody ever asks, so he doesn’t show anyone, and therefore naturally he doesn’t get a lot of feedback that isn’t from himself.
When they arrive, he packs the photos away, sending them home to his bed. He does indeed take a few pictures of the falls, but they turn out rather blurry, due to the sheer amount of motion involved in waterfalls. With a more modern camera, he could take a better picture, but he doesn’t really /want/ a more modern camera. He likes this one.
Taking pictures of the not-deer is much easier, and he gets some close-ups of its glassy eyes. When he’s done taking pictures, he asks, “Do you think I should take the skull home? I kind of want to, and it’d be hard to get an intact skull otherwise.” He collects dead things that he finds on his walks, and if he can, he preserves them in jars or keeps their skeletons(but that’s only if the rest of them is too hard to preserve).
"I’ve seen a couple from afar,” he says. “I’ve never really wanted to get up close and personal- they’re huge. And, you know, deadly predators. I tend to keep my distance from those.” He can defend himself just fine against almost anything, but he prefers not to risk it. He doesn’t really like being near danger or dangerous things, for the most part.
“But to answer your first question,” Dave adds, pushing his shades up his nose a little. “No, I haven’t been up there. I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never gone there, myself. We can hike up there, if that’s what you want .” He’s used to walking and biking places, so distance isn’t really a bother for him.
Jake’s enthusiasm is infectious, and he finds himself smiling just a little. They’re doing this, bro. They’re making this happen.
"Alrighty then, mate!” It gives him a boost. He can feel his energy and happiness skyrocket and crash through the metaphorical roof. He is just so pumped to make a good friend out of this new acquaintance of his.
“Do you mind me asking, ” he starts walking with that, his head fixated on Dave’s figure,“ How long do you indulge in taking photographs? Can I see some? Oh, I hope - that would be a real blast! ” He talks and talks, getting more chatty the deeper into the forest they get, occasionally pointing out pretty plants or uncommon animals. He even goes as far as picking up a (apparently poisonous) thin snake, holding its head in one hand, its body around his shoulders and in his other hand.
He talks about it for a while with great admiration before letting the snake go by lightly sliding it through the nearest bush.
Dave trails after him, just a few steps behind as he tries to remember what exactly he took a picture of last and fuck, he forgot to get a picture of the phoenixflower, fuck fuck fuck.

It’s an oooold Polaroid, something that his family was able to bring with them when they left for the stars, just before Earth self-destructed. His brother gave it to him when he was little, along with a packet of the film cards or whatever they’re called. He just replicates them whenever he gets close to running out, so he’s got pretty much infinite film, which is pretty cool.
“You want to hang out with me?” The words feel kind of foreign in his mouth; he’s not got a lot of people that would really want to hang out with him, so the feeling of having someone say it is weird. “Uh, sure, why not,” he continues, his eyebrows furrowing slightly above his shades. “I wouldn’t mind, we can do that.“
His gaze follows where Jake is pointing, and he nods. "Yeah, I’ve been there before, it’s pretty cool.” He used to climb up into the rafters to sit there like a bird or something, but he stopped doing that when he nearly fell down the couple stories to the bottom. The beams are old and rotten, so they almost collapsed under him, and only some quick spellwork kept him from plummeting down towards probably death or grievous injury.
"We can still go, though. If you want to.“
Jake notices the way Dave seems to be baffled about someone else willing and wanting to hang out with him. Yet, he doesn’t blame him. He would probably surprised too if the situation wad happening to himself. It’s really cool when somebody wants to hang out, though! It gives him a feeling akin to adoration or such. He just feels important enough for someone so much that they want to hang out with him.
"Oh? Damn, well, have you seen the waterworks deeper in the forest? There is a nice cleaning with a small pond and a waterwall. It leads up into the mountains so it isn’t uncommon to run into a mountain lion there! Have you ever seen one, or taken a picture of one? ” If Dave really wants to, yet doesn’t lile to run into direct danger that is meeting a real one, Jake can always shapeshift into one! Although they are quite big, he can manage!
He grins brightly at him, stepping from foot to foot, obviously storing too much energy to contain within himself, so it’s best he starts moving soon before he starts bouncing around like a tennis ball. Trust me. It’s real and it’s gonna happen.

Way down over yonder...
Jake can only beam with slight happiness once the stranger notices him, looks up at him and even responds to him. Despite his friendly demeanor, not a lot of people want to talk to him. Quite possibly they have grown wary of others, especially strangers that do not fit into their spectral version of ‘normal’. Like Jake for example. One can often see him with a few weird features of various fauna, exotic or not. He likes the different perceptions it gives him. Two animals don’t look at the world the same way. Same for a human and an animal. He waves quite wildly at the man, or rather a boy, moving to crouch down and get a better view. “Ah, hello again! This isn’t my first time here, although it is my first time seeing someone. I am Jake, how about you?” He tilts his head and pushes his glasses up his nose before he bravely begins to scale the building. “Not much! Admiring the nature, mostly! It is quite wonderful how it is taking back what once was taken from her!” He climbs about halfway down, grabbing a vine and using it to slide the rest of the way down. He has to however jump down a few feet, landing on his feet, walking over to him. “Once again, I am Jake. Jake English,” he grins at Dave, offering him his hand. Once he notices how dirty it is from soil and flora, he attempt to wipe it off on his khakis. “Ah, bollocks, I hope you don’t mind. I am but a silly adventurer exploring what can be explored!”
It takes him a moment to properly process everything that this Jake has said, especially the bit about the “her” that he refers to. Who- oh, right. Some people refer to nature as one separate entity with “her” pronouns, which is kind of confusing to Dave. If he was to give an entity made of many, many different lives and creatures and plants pronouns, he’d use “they”, since it’d (hypothetically) be a conglomerate of different things and not a whole entity in and of itself and wow this train of thought is really pointless and he’s been staring off into the distance while Jake’s been waiting for him to reply. Shit.
Dave snaps out of it and takes the offered hand, shaking firmly and briefly and then letting go. “Right,” he murmurs, wiping his hand on his pants, as well. He’s just glad that Jake didn’t catch him on one of his dress days, because people sometimes get really awkward and weird when they see a dude in a dress, for some reason.
“I’m Dave,” he says finally. “Dave Strider. Nice t’meetcha. I come here to take pictures ‘n’ stuff, so like, if you want to hang out, that’s cool, but it’s not gonna be all that interesting, probably.” He holds up the camera, wiggling it a little, and then lets it down gently to hang from its neck strap.

Way down over yonder...
A concrete jungle is a different place from an actual jungle. In a real jungle, one can navigate their surroundings by simple visual guidance - by mosses, insects, sun and the wind current. In a concrete jungle, or an actual city to be exact, that is not possible. Sure, you can try and follow the street names and also the sun if you think that will help, but you will always end up going around in a circle or in an alley somewhere downtown. Jake indeed isn’t able to navigate the city’s endless streets yet. It isn’t really that long, no more than a week that he wound up in this place. Got a nice place off in the suburbs. He isn’t feeling this whole ‘city’ thing. Yet. However, urban exploration is something he enjoys. It reminds him of the tombs he used to explore. However, there are no tombs here. At max the sewers but he isn’t going down there, alright? So instead, he goes around town, in search of abandoned buildings with breathtaking sights worth capturing with a camera by at least one person so the whole world can see it. He very much enjoys old buildings with overgrown plants. Not only it reminds him of home, but plants create new life somewhere, where the last living things left years and years ago. Nature is taking back what belongs to it.The sight is truly breath-taking. With more gusto and newfound strength, he glances up at the half-destroyed building before he finds himself climbing up the set of broken stairs, using the vines to help him. It isn’t long before he reaches his desired destination, perching up in one of the holes that were once windows. And he sure notices someone else nearby. And incidentally with a vintage camera. That’s probably as rare a winning in a lottery for 3 consecutive days. Hey, maybe he could have his picture taken. “Um, hello!” he shouts, holding onto the half fallen stone wall next to him, not sure if the stranger heard him.
Cicadas- or, this planet’s version of cicadas, as far as he can tell- chirp and rasp, loud and persistent, as Dave makes his way through the ruined streets of the old town. Some of the old human settlements from just after the ships landed, like this place, were abandoned in favor of the larger cities and suburbs when they were built, and it’s an eerie sight, the buildings abandoned and overgrown with vines and other flora. Wild animals sometimes roam the streets, but they don’t mess with him; they’ve learned better. He’s not the most skilled spellcaster yet, but he’s perfectly capable of defending himself.
Dave likes coming here. It’s quiet, except for the animals and insects, and there’s no people, which is his favorite part. He’s not a fan of the bustle of the city, since his own home is in the outskirts of the suburbs, like most peoples’ are, now. No people means it’s quiet. Quiet gives him room to think, and helps him create spells or learn them from books or other places.
Plus, he gets really good pictures, here.
He’s just clambered over a crumbled wall into what must have been someone’s yard once to take a picture of a phoenix flower when he hears someone’s voice calling out to him. Dave looks up, squinting against the sun and trying to make out the figure’s face. “Hey there,” he calls back, waving a little. “Uh... wow, don’t see people ‘round here, much. What are you doing here?”
heat
It’s an oppressively hot day. Dave would say he can’t remember the last time it was this hot, but he can easily remember the last day that it was this hot: yesterday. They’ve been having a honest-to-god heat wave as of late, and as much as he likes warm days, this is just straight up goddamn ridiculous. He feels like he’s sweat gallons, and he’s taken to using one of the decorative fans he got from a friend to cool himself, since there’s no natural breeze. Drinking lots of water helps, but he’s gotta chill it with a spell. Sometimes he chills a few bottles of water and places them in places where it sucks worst.
In short, heat waves suck. -10/10, would never recommend. Ever.
After a couple hours lying in his bed on sweaty gross sheets, Dave comes to the conclusion that he needs to get out and do something. Anything. He puts on a sunhat, a loose white dress(hey, it’s better than the gross tightness of jeans or anything else), and sandals, and heads out on his bike. The feeling of the air rushing past as he pedals along the broken roads is heavenly, and he silently thanks himself for the foresight of taking his shades with him; the sun is blinding-bright. There’s not a single cloud in the sky, and as he speeds along, he finds himself actually starting to enjoy the day.
The roads get even more uneven as he exits town, heading(unconsciously) towards the oceanside. Maybe he’ll go for a swim, he thinks, as he draws ever closer to the ocean, sparkling and nearly as bright as the sky- just a different shade of blue. When he reaches a set of cliffs near the next town over from his own, due northeast, he skids to a halt, looking over the ocean. Here, there’s a breeze, and he has to hold on to his hat as he looks out, the wind tugging at his dress. After a moment of squinting, Dave gets off, setting his bike down nearby, and sits on a large rock at the edge of the cliff.
Yeah, this feels like a good place to rest for a while.
