according to hargreeves’ notes , the monster emerges from BENEATH ben’s skin. this means that every time ben uses his powers , it causes him physical harm. 

the ripped skin isn’t deep , but it’s left a huge visible scar. the length spans from below his bellybutton to right below his heart , and the width is about HIS width. as he gets bigger , the size of the portal increases as well.

his power stems from an energy that he can tap into to open up the portal and suggest the tentacled monster’s attacks / actions. an example of this is that he’ll focus on stopping the bad guys and suddenly the tentacles are ripping four guys apart limb from limb.

when it’s a less intense direction ( ie in the comics how he holds klaus’ ouija board for him ) he can divert more energy to that specific task , but he still needs a majority of it to keep the portal open.

the monster is almost always in more control than he is.
