Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel - Behind the Scenes - Part Ten

Excerpt from a Cult Times interview with director Graeme Harper:

The Age of Steel was filmed in one massive production block that also included episodes Rise of the Cybermen, Army of Ghosts, and Doomsday. This was the mid-point of Doctor Who's Season Two schedule, during one of the coldest winters of recent years, and the cast and crew were forced to endure the big freeze during long stints of night filming. "There's a scene we did in Cardiff, on a strange mound in a park next door to Asda, where the Doctor and his friends rise up an embankment," recalls Harper. "That was the coldest night in the UK. If you listen carefully you can hear David's voice - he just managed to open his mouth to get the words out. His jaw almost locked, it was so cold. It didn't matter how many clothes you put on before you got to the moment, all of the cast were all frozen. But the scene still works."

DWM: Was there a particular moment that made you stop and think: "This is a really mad way to make a living..." Tom Kingsley [ the director of Wild Blue Yonder ]: I remember one day, which is just a good illustration of how varied it is, where we started in the morning filming something outdoors in a really beautiful location. Then we came inside to an alien creature, then we filmed a robot, then we did a pick-up with David and Catherine, running through this completely imaginary location on green screen. And all of these moments, which all look really cool and completely different, are from one single episode. And I just though, "yeah, kid in a candy store..."

David Tennant on David Morrisey "It's a real thrill to work with him again," says David Tennant of David Morrissey, with whom he previously starred in BBC1 drama Blackpool in 2004. Morrissey, Dervla Kirwan, and Velile Tshabalala, who plays Morrissey's companion, Rosita, came in for the special at the end of the grueling nine-month series-four shoot. "There was, I suppose, a danger we'd all be exhausted by the Christmas special," says Tennant. "But to have David, Dervla, and Velile come in with so much energy, always being funny and bright and up for anything, I think it spurred us on. We all got on very well."

The actor says an early scene where the pathologically competitive Tony leaps from his helicopter onto the croquet lawn is his favorite career moment so far. "That hole-in-one, I would like you to know, was probably the greatest day of my professional life," he laughs. Instructed by the director to "whack it" from 30 feet away he was told the cameras would keep running until he managed it. "I thought the crew are gonna hate me by take 402," he remembers. "And I nailed it on take four. I've never felt more pleased with myself than that moment. I felt like a sporting God."
