“I have come to believe that as Black women are threshold for pain is too high. We have embraced very destructive beliefs about our ability to handle it all, our power to overcome in the face of trauma, our ability to put ourselves aside as we tend to the needs of our employers, partners, children, family – everyone but ourselves! So many of the Black women I meet live in terror of letting anyone down but could care less about the number of promises they break to themselves every day”
- excerpt from BLACK PAIN/IT JUST LOOKS LIKE WE’RE NOT HURTING by Terrie M. Williams, published by Scribner, 2008. ⭐️

yesterday I learned from my long time faves @therapyforblackgirls that July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
The word minority ruffles my feathers but I appreciate the momen of focusing on the mental health of Black folks specifically.
The spiritual & psychic wounds of racism, capitalism & anti Blackness are precise and can most definitely be linked to the depression, rage, anxiety and tension we may feel in our bodies, hearts & minds. Race based PTSD is real. Thank God it has become more common place for Black people to go to therapy and even take medication when needed. Thank God and the ancestors we are past the point of knowing that yes prayer & ritual help but there are times when we may need more focused support, assistance, management, care. Although I think access to services is still lacking for many of us, at least now the shame around needing specialized care is less prevalent. There was a time when this was not the case.
This book is a iconic in that it was one of the first to talk about Depression within the Black community, not only did she frame Depression as a legitimate disease, she talked about how and why it manifests, how we tend to PERFORM joy, strength, & success.
She kept it REAL🖤
In this book she shares her testimony and those of others, living with this disease, she also offers tangible tools for healing. It is very honest and encouraging, I also believe it inspired a tidal wave of conversations that have helped us develop this culture of TRUTH that we are moving towards!!🤞🏿🖤🙏🏿

i literally can’t stop thinking about this video and i lose it every time
Lmfao
okay everything about this video is absolute gold:
the fact that the guy argues via the puppet the entire time
the music
“let’s discuss the contradiction”
the overuse of the word “camera”
the way the puppet goes from trying to placate the guy to actively arguing against the guy and like turning it around on the guy
“youre consciously making a conscious choice”
the fact that by the end the puppet is basically screaming and the music is just. so loud.
“YOURE BREAKING THE CAMERA” as the video abruptly ends
for anyone who wants to see more stuff like this, you can probably find clips of it on YouTube. it came from a show called “Wonder Showzen” and it’s responsible for these gems, too:
Can't wait
