“Heard you’re headed to my neck of the quadrant,” Sylvain replies, letting a shoulder fall against the door frame beside him with a soft thud, the perfect picture of nonchalance. It’s a pretty pointless act, though; underneath the cavalier exterior, Sylvain can feel his heart beating rapidly from somewhere up near his throat, no matter how thoroughly he attempts to swallow the feeling back down. Just one look and Felix would know it—would have to know it, pesky betazoid abilities and all that—even with the easy smile plastered across his face. “Thought maybe I’d come with you. Honor the ancestors, pray to a few orbs. Stuff like that.”

The thing is, Sylvain was lying when he said the last time he’d seen Felix was on the bridge of that cadet cruise five years ago. That in and of itself shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone—Sylvain's never actually been all that good at telling the truth, especially if lying meant he got to avoid offering up a bit of himself in the process. It’s another of his most recognizable character flaws. Lying about Felix, though… that’s a little more complicated. There’s a handful of reasons he could give—some of them true, even more of them fabricated rationalizations—but they boil down to basically this: Sylvain still isn’t sure if seeing Felix after was real or only a figment of his painkiller-addled imagination. He isn’t sure that he wants to know, either. So he keeps it to himself. As long as no one tells him otherwise, he can still pretend, right?
