The diets of these ground-dwelling birds, and cover, consists mainly of sagebrush. However, as a result of “overhunting, habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation” the species is on a decline. Estimates showed historical populations to be 1.6 million to 16 million greater sage-grouse. By 2000 the FWS estimated that number to be between 100,000 and 500,000.

Irises by Van Gogh was painted when he was in an asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole. During this time he drew inspiration from the surrounding nature and clinic.

The Gross Clinic on display in 1876 in the U.S. Army Post Hospital, the portrait was by Thomas Eakinsin, an American artist, in 1875.
