Uncanny X-Force (2010) #35
Loose Ends 1
*She straightens, rolling her shoulders back.* I will. And keep yourself safe. And out of trouble, preferably.
*After a moment of wariness, Betsy takes Fantomex’s hand.* I will act accordingly. If there’s word of replicating this antidote… I will contact you.
*Fantomex bows to kiss the hand placed so recklessly into his care* How gracious of you, Elizabeth.
Same to you. *Cluster nods* Remember, whatever happens in this new life of yours, you’ll always have a home with us.
*she takes a step back, disappearing into the jungle. Fantomex tips an imaginary hat at Betsy and follows.*
*Betsy watches as they slip into the trees, until there's no trace of black and white in her eyeline. The spot on her hand where Jean-Phillipe had kissed her is still warm, as is the touch of Cluster's fingers on her chin. *
Bloody thieves. *She says this without any touch of anger, only weary fondness.*
*Above her, a rumble of thunder echoes out over the forest, and she starts back to her car, remembering the mission and the ticking clock attached.*
Loose Ends 1
I- *She freezes, briefly.* This is the Hand, Cluster. I can’t—
They knew where I live, I can’t discount that. Where else could they have gotten the information?
*Betsy sighs,* But no, no, you wouldn’t betray me. I know that.
Well, keep that in mind. *rises to her feet, pushing herself off of Fantomex’s shoulder* Come on, my love, I’m feeling better. It’s time to make ourselves scarce before the rain falls.
*Fantomex gets up as well, offers Betsy a hand* I know my word doesn’t mean much to you, but look elsewhere for your information leaks.
*She straightens, rolling her shoulders back.* I will. And keep yourself safe. And out of trouble, preferably.
*After a moment of wariness, Betsy takes Fantomex's hand.* I will act accordingly. If there's word of replicating this antidote... I will contact you.
Loose Ends 1
*Betsy reaches out, patting Cluster’s hand once.* Unless you sold me out to the Hand, there is no way this could have been predicted.
I swear, though, this was the worst timing possible.
*Betsy frowns severely.* She’s dying, Jean-Phillipe. And I don’t think Sergeant Barnes is letting it out of his sight until we fix the problem.
*Fantomex lifts the bottom of his mask to mouth Sergeant Barnes dramatically at Cluster. She shakes her head in either an amused or exasperated manner; probably both*
You can’t possibly think that. That we’d sell you out. *jerks her thumb at Fantomex* Well, maybe some of us, but come on, you think I’d stand for this sort of thing?
*he throws his hands up* Oh please. Also, other people are dying, Cluster, and some of those people could be some of us. Don’t—
*Cluster places her fingers over his mouth and looks at Betsy* Ignore him, please, and answer my question.

Loose Ends 1
And you certainly haven’t been shot at before, have you? *She quirks an eyebrow.*
The nice man with the metal arm is just fighting for his loved one. I certainly wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.
*Betsy lets the palest of smiles play out over her lips.* I’m fine too.
I’m sorry. *Cluster touches Betsy’s chin softly and lets her hand fall away* We certainly didn’t mean to get you caught up in this.
The timing was definitely unfortunate. *Fantomex nods* Not that we’re not happy to run into you, darling, but we wish it was under happier circumstances. Ones that would let us get that little vial. Are you definitely sure this person needs it…?

Wouldn’t be the first time.
It was a billion dollar bottle, what the hell else was I supposed to do with it? Toss it into the Seine? Besides, it made a nice birthday drink.
*As Cluster stirs, Betsy steps closer, the faintest trace of concern on her face.* That was an incredibly foolish move, Cluster.
*Cluster sits up, Fantomex steadying her against himself. She sounds like she’s grinning* What, running? Oh, and I suppose I should’ve let the nice man with the metal arm shoot at me. We had a job, we were going to do it.
*Fantomex murmurs something in her ear*
I’m fine. Are you—? *Cluster reaches her fingertips towards the bruise on Betsy’s face*

*Betsy rolls her eyes once more, her tone sardonic.*
Funny you forgot to mention all the stealing we did. It was wonderful. Up until you set me up to kill someone, it was a bloody romance movie.
I still have the champagne too, now that I think of it..
Careful with those beautiful eyes, darling, they will roll into the back of your head permanently if you keep that up. *points at her*
Bloody romance movie, oh, that’s rich. *chuckles* You know, I figured you’d still have the champagne. You’re a romantic at heart, Elizabeth, and more sentimental than you care to admit.
*Cluster stirs, groans* Uuuuuh…My brain feels like scrambled eggs. Anyone have any aspirin?

Loose Ends 1
*She gives him a ‘really?’ look.*
That’s easy to say when you’re dating another of your brains. I’d rather go back to being one of Mojo’s pawns than to what we had. The only way I’d consider it would be for Cluster’s sake.
*Her smirk grows a little bit at that,* Not to say I don’t have anything to remember it by. I still have the car.
*his voice is somewhat wistful* But can you blame me? She’s perfect. And what we had, it wasn’t so bad, no? Great rides, great company. Diamonds glittering under the lights of the most beautiful city on Earth, Paris. *the accent is laid on pretty thick there*

Loose Ends 1
*Just as dryly.* You give what you get, Jean-Phillipe.
*She crosses and uncrosses her arms, looking markedly uncomfortable.* He’s fine. According to Meggan, anyway.
Sounds like trouble on the home front, my dear. *circles arms around Cluster* Say what you will about life of crime, but you must agree it is much better for family…and romance. Perhaps I would have you do some of that. Like me.

Loose Ends 1
*Betsy glowers, but she can’t get properly annoyed with Fantomex. Not now, at least.*
Cluster always was the better half. In more ways than one. *There is a touch of wickedness to her smirk at this.*
I wouldn’t call crippling a Hand base ‘goody-two shoes.’ *There is ice in her voice now,* Besides, what would you have me do? Go back to a life of crime? Or start murdering children again? Like you?
*dryly* Such a peach, Bets. How’s your brother?
*Just as dryly.* You give what you get, Jean-Phillipe.
*She crosses and uncrosses her arms, looking markedly uncomfortable.* He's fine. According to Meggan, anyway.
Loose Ends 1
*She sighs, at the mention of that.* I can point to Logan for that twist of fate. Stop in for one visit, and the next thing I know, I’m responsible for children with powers.
Besides, it’s better work than what we used to do. Far, far better.
*There’s an edge of regret and anger to her voice at that, as Betsy rolls one hand closed.*
*shakes head, laughs* So it’s true. You and children, Elizabeth? Oh, Cluster is going to laugh her head off when she comes to. Although she’d probably say she always knew you had a nurturing side.
*leans the back of his head on the palm tree* Are you bored yet? With the goody two-shoes crap, I mean. *gestures to indicate her team off in the distance*

Loose Ends 1
*There’s a sharpness to Betsy’s expression, although it’s slightly diminished by the bruise on her cheek, from getting kicked off the table.*
Reminding an old organization the dangers of threatening innocent people to get to me. A lesson the Hand should know well by now.
*She narrows her eyes.* Better than teaching them, anyway.
Ah. *turns his head in her direction* I hear you’re a teacher now.
*for a moment, he looks as if he’s going to reach out towards her, but no, he leans against a tree and slides down to the ground, arranging Cluster to be more comfortable*

Luckily, Kitty’s smart enough not to toss in her lot with thieves.
*Betsy rolls her eyes at that.*
I think that the two of you have plenty of tricks in order to get what you want. Even if the misdirection is in other hands.
*low chuckle* Oh, yes, thieves. And what exactly were you doing here, Elizabeth darling, stopping by for a friendly chat with the ninjas? Some tea and crumpets perhaps?
*the set of his shoulders is tense*

Loose Ends 1
*She does, in fact, turn to see the pair, and while the rational aspect of her knows making the others wait is not the best idea, she acts otherwise.*
*Slipping through the trees, Betsy manages to plant herself firmly in Fantomex’s path, arms crossed.*
Not like you to leave a party so quickly, Jean-Phillipe.
*muffled* Pryde’s special talents would be convenient in our line of work. *looks down* However.
*brushes hair out of Cluster’s face - well, off of her mask. Jerks his head up.* Hey, did you know if you put a hand through someone’s brain, it makes them pass out? I should try that. Think it’ll work for me?

Loose Ends 1
*As our plucky heroes have gotten ready to leave the raided Hand base, two figures stagger out behind them. Should Betsy turn around, she’d see Fantomex carrying Cluster, who is now unconscious, into the foliage*
*She does, in fact, turn to see the pair, and while the rational aspect of her knows making the others wait is not the best idea, she acts otherwise.*

Many Happy Returns
Another year come and gone.
She should call her brother. Visiting is out of the question, she has no right to interrupt, even if it is their shared day.
Betsy’s sure he and Meggan are celebrating. Something quiet and dignified, her twin brother was never one for grand, gaudy parties.
That was Jamie’s forte.
The snap of his neck in her brother’s hands, the deafening silence where his mind used to be.
Best not to linger there, after all, it’s supposed to be a celebration.
She still has the bottle of champagne, the billion dollar bottle, all that wasted potential. It’s half full, and still bubbly, secured in a hidden compartment of her car. If there was ever a time to drink it, it was today
King Champagne… Drink it with someone and fall in love forever.
She raises the bottle, a toast to a year passed. A toast, a new tally mark in the days since the last death at her hands.
The tang of the alcohol and the fizz of the bubbles hits her nose and her taste buds, and Betsy thinks, maybe everything is worth it, for this.
