Ross sat in his wheelchair outside of the school, parked up on the grassy patch near the side of the building. The sun was warm, but the weight of his green fiberglass casts made everything feel a little heavier. His feet, both of them freshly immobilized from the intense surgery, were propped up in front of him, the thick casts barely budging as he shifted his weight. The pain from the surgery still lingered, especially in his feet. He couldnât believe how much he missed being able to move around on his own. Walking, running, just standing felt like a distant memory now.
The surgery had been tough. Doctors had sliced into the soles of both his feet, making deep incisions along the arches to repair ruptured tendons and severely damaged ligaments. The cuts had been extensive, requiring hours of surgery, and now Ross was stuck in these casts for at least the next couple of months. The worst part? He wouldnât be able to walk again until the healing was complete, which felt like an eternity.
It was hard to focus on anything but the gnawing discomfort. He was out of class for the day, his friend Jon had come to keep him company during lunch, and the two of them were just talking to kill time. But even while they joked about stupid stuff, Ross couldnât shake the feeling of helplessness that came with the cramping in his foot. Heâd been trying to relax for a while, but the familiar sharp pain in the arch of his left foot came back, catching him off guard.
Jon noticed it immediately. âYou good, man?â he asked, his voice full of concern.
Ross grimaced, his fingers instinctively flexing around the wheelchairâs armrests. âUgh, another foot cramp... this is seriously the worst part of all this,â he said, wincing. "Itâs like, I canât even move my feet, but they keep cramping up, and it feels like Iâm stuck in a vice."
Jon nodded sympathetically. âDo you need me to help you out? I know you canât really get to them in those casts.â
Ross exhaled slowly, his face tightening with the pain. âYeah, man... I canât do anything. Just help me out. Please.â
Jon didnât hesitate. He squatted down in front of Ross, looking at his feet encased in the green casts. There were still white hospital socks covering the casts, but Rossâs toes were clearly visible at the end, peeking out from the edge of the casts, just like tiny prisoners trying to escape.
âAlright, first thingâs first,â Jon said, carefully pulling the sock off Rossâs right foot. âLetâs see if we can do something about that cramp. You canât suffer through this while Iâm here.â
As Jon tugged the sock free, Rossâs toes emerged, a little stiff from being trapped in the cast for so long. They looked surprisingly well-groomedâneatly aligned, no visible damage despite the surgery, and almost shockingly clean. It was like his feet had been well taken care of, even in the midst of all this mess.
Jon looked at them for a second, raising an eyebrow. âDude... youâve got some nice toes. Seriously. Even with everything youâre going through, they look pretty good.â
Ross cracked a smile, despite the ache in his feet. âWhat, are you seriously complimenting my toes while Iâm stuck in a wheelchair? Iâve got cramping feet and youâre talking about my toes?â
Jon grinned back. âHey, Iâm just saying. If you ever want to start a toe Instagram, Iâm all in for the âBefore and After Surgeryâ shots.â
Ross shook his head, laughing a little, but quickly refocusing as the cramp in his foot shot through him again. âOkay, okay, but can you help me stretch them out? Iâm not about to get stuck like this all day.â
Jon nodded quickly, focusing on the task at hand. He gently took hold of Rossâs toes, one by one, and started to move them slowly, working them through the cramp. At first, Ross tensed, a jolt of pain running through his foot, but then Jon moved his toes in gentle circles, stretching them, giving them the space they needed. The cramp started to release bit by bit.
Ross let out a relieved sigh as the tension slowly began to ease. âOh man... that feels so much better. Seriously. Youâre like a foot magician.â
Jon kept his grip on Rossâs toes for a few more moments, just making sure the cramp was completely gone. âNo magic, just good old-fashioned foot stretching.â He paused for a second before adding with a playful grin, âBut I gotta say, youâve got these perfect toes. Like... for real. You should take the other sock off too, just so I can see the full set.â
Ross raised an eyebrow. âYouâre joking, right? You want to see both of my feet now?â
Jonâs grin only widened. âYeah, why not? Your toes deserve to be shown off. The full package, right?â
Ross hesitated, then shrugged. âAlright, alright. Do it. Take it off.â
With a chuckle, Jon carefully tugged off the second white sock, revealing Rossâs other foot. Now, both of his feet were completely exposed from the end of the casts, his ten toes sticking out, each perfectly in line. Even with the pain he was in, Ross couldnât help but notice that his feet, despite everything, still had a certain symmetry to them. His toes were just... pretty normal, actually. It seemed almost absurd to be focused on how good they looked when everything else about his situation was far from normal.
Jon was looking at both feet now, clearly impressed. âOkay, you werenât kidding. Iâve seen a lot of feet in my life, but these... these are something else.â
Ross laughed, shaking his head. âI feel like an idiot. My feet are literally the last thing I should be thinking about right now. But thanks, I guess?â
Jon didnât miss a beat. âYouâre welcome. Iâm just saying, if the whole recovery thing doesnât work out, you could definitely start a career as a foot model.â He gave Rossâs toes a playful wiggle. âI think youâve got a good future ahead of you.â
Ross chuckled, despite himself, and gave Jon a side-eye. âYeah, I think Iâm good. I just want to get through this without too many more cramps.â
âWell, now that weâve got you cramp-free,â Jon said, standing up and stepping back, âyou can enjoy your celebrity toes for a while.â
Ross couldnât help but laugh. âAlright, alright. Iâm not that fancy.â
But for a moment, just sitting there in his wheelchair with the sun on his face and Jon joking around, Ross almost forgot about the pain. Sure, he was stuck in the cast for months, but at least he had a friend who could make him laugh about it. Even if his toes did deserve their own fan club.
