“Oh?” Zach gaped at him before sighing in relief and nodding a little—okay! That was a joke! It didn’t make sense but that was… a joke. He was honestly still trying to see the funny part of the joke until Teddy mentioned James. His eyes lit up a little, James being a rather comfortable… subject despite their conversation at the pizza restaurant. “Mmhm,” he said, nodding shyly. “He has.” Now, James and Teddy was an entirely different problem on its own that Zach just didn’t think made any sense. He didn’t really know what to say because he felt all he could say was something in regards to his relationship with James—or lack thereof—and… maybe that’s not something he should talk about upon first meeting a person, right? And yet—”Why don’t you love James back?”

Until that moment, James didn’t realise it was possible to feel like he was bursting with happiness but at the same time wanting to curl up and sob. Because right now he had never felt happier because Teddy was saying all the things he’d always wanted him to say. Yet at the same time, he just wanted to start crying because he didn’t mean any of it. None of it was real. It was all just the love potion making him say this and it broke his heart. At least he thought it did because his heart was beating faster than ever and all he could focus on was how much he loved Teddy and how much he needed him. He’d barely even noticed that he was actually crying now – crying with pure happiness because never in a million years did he think that this would actually happen, even if it wasn’t real. He was going to stop thinking about that and just enjoy the moment. “I love you. And we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives because we’re soulmates and we’re made for each other. You are mine and I am yours and it’s always been that way.” Every thought of Aaron had completely gone from his mind because he was suddenly so consumed with Teddy. He could think of nothing else other than him. Teddy had taken over his body and mind and he wanted him in every way possible. He’d never kissed anyone like this before. It was full of love and passion and every single painful and unvoiced thought they’d had. It was love. James moved to straddle Teddy and kissed him even harder, wanting him more than anything in the world. Teddy was his everything – he was his entire universe and having to live another day not being with him would kill him. “I’m YOURS. No one else’s, only yours. Forever and always.”

Going to a club was a surprising suggestion that came from Eli. Zach didn’t know what to think of it, but there was music and dancing, so it could be fun, right? Except, he did know—or knew of—the types of shenanigans that could go on in clubs so he wasn’t too sure if he’d like it all too much. All those people and he really didn’t feel like talking to anyone he didn’t know, so as long as he stuck with Eli, he should be fine. Luckily, it was fine for a little bit, that is until he felt a little shocking tap on his shoulder that had him gasping and turning to face the person that was trying to get his attention. Zach just gaped at him, completely flustered at his question, honestly not able to find his voice, and he looked away and around to see where Eli was… and he was nowhere. “Eli?” Zach called before turning around to face the stranger again, looking at him with a little bit of fear. “NO!” He ended up shouting, unintentionally, before clamping his hand over his mouth and feeling bad. But… but—wait. Zach actually recognized this face! James had shown Zach photos of him and James before everything went to shit. Zach stared at Teddy skeptically before pulling his hands down from his mouth. “You’re Teddy?” Zach asked cautiously, hoping he wasn’t wrong.

James screwed up his nose and let out the smallest of laughs. “Look, I’ll never get alcohol poisoning. It all just comes back up before that can happen to me. And then I just drink some more. My body loves alcohol.” He was pretty sure that was wrong, especially as he was still a lightweight despite being a heavy drinker. And he knew half the time he did shit he shouldn’t be doing or saying, especially recently. James’ heart almost stopped when Teddy spoke and his fingers suddenly paused, no longer tracing patterns. He knew what Teddy was saying wasn’t real and it was just the amortentia making him say that but oh he wanted it SO much it hurt. Those words were all he wanted to hear Teddy say and really, he couldn’t help his eyes from welling up momentarily as a surge of emotions swept over him. His lips parted and he moved so he could cup Teddy’s cheeks with his hands and look him in the eye. “Tell me you love me, Teddy. Tell me you love me and want me because I would do anything for you. I want you to be mine forever, always have done.”

Of course, Teddy would choose a movie like High School Musical. They always watched dumb cheesy movies together and honestly right now it was the perfect choice because he needed something that would make him laugh. Plus, Zac Efron was his future husband so he could never get enough of him. “YES! Can we watch all three of them? Ooh, and then watch the rest of Zac Efron’s movies because he’s my husband and I’m so proud of his every achievement and need to see his pretty face.” A wide grin appeared on his face and plonked himself down next to Teddy, carefully making sure that there was at least a centimetre between them because even just the thought of touching him as casually as they used to made his heart ache painfully. “Shut up,” he mumbled bashfully as Teddy reminded him that he could actually sing and quickly drank his drink to give him something to do. “What’s the point in a drink that’s barely alcoholic?” James’ eyes bore into the cup as Teddy practically downed his drink and smile carefully. He knew the dose he put in there was much more than they usually used to make themselves a little high so the effect was going to be a lot stronger. As he finished the rest of his cup, he suddenly blinked and realised that wow he needed to be closer to Teddy. Why was he even trying to sit far away from him? So he shuffled in closer and put his hand on his thigh, making circles on his leg with his finger. “I missed you so much. I prefer being with you to Aaron. Why am I with him and not you?”

When James finally arrived back in the flat after a week, he felt somewhat uneasy. Even though he was hurt and upset and still slightly pissed off at Teddy, he wanted to see him and his dumb face again. It wasn’t bad being with Aaron but Teddy was just Teddy and he needed the boy in his life. Even though he has been apprehensive to see his best friend, as soon as he saw Teddy he swung his arms around him and hugged him as tightly as he could. “I missed you, I missed you, I missed you.” It was like he never wanted to let go, but he did – a lot quicker than he usually let go when he hugged him. As he glanced around the kitchen, his eyes zoned in on a vial of love potion sitting on the table and he looked at it curiously. A sudden and terrible idea came into his head and he knew it was wrong but he wanted Teddy. So badly. “Okay, you go find us a movie to watch, I just need to pee.” He petted Teddy’s shoulders and ushered him into the living room. Not allowing a second to pass, he grabbed the vial and tipped it into Teddy’s mug – noticing their matching mugs were already out with drinks in them. He felt guilty but honestly, when he came back into the living room and passed Teddy his drink, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

james: if we can't be together then i hope you can be happy with somebody else

james: we've been james and teddy for 22 years, it's not going to stop because there's feelings involved. remember when i told you i had a crush on you when we were 15?

teddy: it's probably the last thing on my mind right now, jamie, but i hope you can be happy too

james: i love you in every sense of the word which is why this whole situation so so fucking hard.

james: i know we'll never be together so you need to get over your jealousy so i can get over you because every time you show me that you're jealous it gives me hope again and it's killing me.

james: it's why i've been avoiding you because i know i'm never going to stop loving you but you're my best friend and i can't stop hanging around with you.
