Chapter 1: Behind the Sun

Koschei is perhaps too fond of Elain, hugging her body with vines and thorns and imprisoning her in her own mind. But a ray of sunlight tickles her skin and she claws at it, desperately trying to free herself from death and rot.

Chapter 2: Warmth

Lucien is forced to hang from thorny branches of his past, while his soul cries out for its other half, a peculiar disease sewn into her bones. But this time, he'll do it his way, and he'll do it right.

Vines (Elucien Drabble)

“Yes, yes, well done!” Lucien encouraged her. “Don’t let go of that thread of magic.”

Elain felt beads of sweat drag down her temple against the strain of her magic. With one hand extended into the air, she gritted her teeth as she continued to wield her earth-magic as Lucien had instructed her. A vine slithered from the dirt, moving in serpentine ways across the moonlit grass of her garden.

“Now use it against me,” Lucien commanded, his voice low for the sake of their secret training, but also because he knew she was reluctant to utilize violence, even if it had become dire that she learn to defend herself.

Everyone has an enemy in Prythian, whether one realizes it or not, he had told her.

“How?” She asked through the bite of her teeth, her forearm shaking as she held the force of her magic at bay. It was untamed and bucking at her attempt to command it, especially when Lucien had her practicing the precision of control in her first attempts of mastery.

“Find a way to disarm me,” he urged her again.

Elain pondered how a beautiful, twining vine could ever compare to the threat of a weapon—how could it ever hold its own against a blade or more unforgiving element?

A wry burst of magic bristled beneath her skin, begging to be let out, as if to say, let me show you.

When Elain surrendered to that thread of magic, she was nearly helpless to discover the vines begin to creep hurriedly toward Lucien, reaching with menacing hands for each of his limbs. Green vines surrounded each wrist, pulling them in opposite directions, while the remaining tendrils wrapped themselves around his knees, heaving him downward towards the earth, until he was forced to kneel like her prisoner.

Trembling at the raw power lingering on her fingertips, Elain stepped closer to inspect the way the vines dug painfully into his skin, taut against his resistance as his muscles strained. Lucien appeared staggered, his golden eye whirring with momentary uneasiness. This was uncharted territory for them, for not only her powers, but for their still graceless, fraught mating bond.

The power swelled deep within her gut, rising to the thundering boom of her heart.

It was neither fear nor pity that ignited her—it was a rush of thrilling pleasure. One that opened within her like a broken dam, heading straight between her legs. Never in her wildest imagination could she have known the sight of Lucien kneeling powerlessly before her would stir such a reaction inside her.

“You should at least attempt to resist,” Elain whispered hoarsely, remembering herself, remembering their purpose for meeting in the dead of night for the past several weeks. “You promised you would not go easy on me.”

It would be important to know how strong her powers could be.

The center of Lucien’s throat bobbed.

His knees dug into the hard dirt, staining his fine clothes. Surely the shackles of the vines, alive and ruthless, were painful. Yet he held her stare, looking up into her earth-colored eyes.

“I’m afraid I cannot resist…” he told her softly, licking his lips. “A position I have often dreamed about.”

In answer, Elain lifted her skirts and threw her leg over his shoulder.
