Females Excelling More in Math Engineering and the Sciences

FEMMES is an outreach program at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. The program provides engaging, hands-on activities that allow girls to learn in a fun, supportive environment and explore their potential in the STEM fields. They hope to build the participants’ curiosity about a variety of areas related to science, math, and engineering and encourage them to increase their participation in those fields.

FEMMES hosts two types of activities for girls in 4th through 6th grade. Saturday Science Capstone events are free programs held twice annually. Each event includes about 200 girls from all over Southeast Michigan. The day starts with a keynote speaker who talks about her path into STEM and why she loves her work. The girls then get to participate in hands-on activities in the morning lead by Professors from U of M and followed by more hands-on activities in the afternoon.

After-School Events are held at local schools and lead by graduate and undergraduate students from STEM fields at U of M. They typically run for two hours and are similar to the Saturday Science Events in that they engage the girls in hands-on STEM activities. They love getting the chance to interact with girls further by visiting their schools.

FEMMES believes that schools, parents, and members of the community can all work together to promote the education and holistic learning of all students. They hope to bridge the gap between students and the community, in order for everyone to feel responsible and accountable for the education of our future generations. FEMMES believes that learning is a collaborative process, and they love bringing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs to the community to provide girls with context and an environment that can complement and reinforce their education at school.
