FREE ART PROGRAMS
So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.
Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.
Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)
Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)
GIMP - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI [cracked] - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)
iPaint - (Mac)
Paintbrush - (Mac)
Pencil - (Windows, Mac)
Paint.NET - (Windows)
Seashore [still in development, ver 0.5] - (Mac)
ChocoFlop - (Mac)
Inkscape - (Mac and Windows)
ArtRage [Demo] - (Mac and Windows)
OpenCanvas 1.1[must pay for 2.0] - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
MyPaint - (Windows)
Krita - (Windows)
Vectorian [Supports Animation] - (Windows)
Pixia[Japanese, some English versions] - (Windows)
Asperite - (Windows)
Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)
SmoothDraw - (Windows)
TwistedBrush Open Studio - (Windows)
BOUNS - CTRL+Paint [Great for teaching all kinds of stuff, like how to use digital programs.]
If you know more free programs, please add onto this!
OpenToonz has made many improvements since it’s initial release! (Windows & Mac)
Medibang Paint is a comic drawing software forked from FireAlpaca mentioned earlier in this post, and is available for mobile devices as well! (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)
reblogging so i remember to download SAI for Mac later

Making Comics Master Link List!
Hey guys, I’m getting a lot of asks about the same things, mostly questions about how to make comics, how to “break into comics” (haha, oh dear), working with publishers, that kind of thing. I’ve done some blogging on many of the subjects, so instead of repeatedly replying in private with links to those posts, I’m going to do a master post thingie with links to all my blogging about how I work. Hopefully some of you will find some helpful nuggets in there! I remember when I first started trying to transition into making comics for a living, and there wasn’t much information about that online. I spent a lot of time wailing about it on a locked livejournal. XD But anyway, I hope my blogs help a wee bit.
Disclaimer: these blog posts are all based on my own personal experiences as a cartoonist, and the advice therein might not work for everyone. The most awesome thing about comics is that there is no one way to make them, nor is there one direct route into becoming a full-time cartoonist. The more pro cartoonists I meet, the more it drives home how different our methods and origin stories are.
Anyway, here you are! (With all of these, scroll past the placeholder image at the top of the post.)
1) How I make my comics, start to finish (traditional penciling)
1A) How I make my comics start to finish, now with digital penciling!
2) Finding the art tools that are right for you.
3) Working with collaborators.
4) Acting in comics.
5) The financial reality of a full time cartoonist.
6) Making a successful graphic novel pitch.
7) Adapting a prose novel to comics, part 1.
8) Adapting a prose novel to comics, part 2.
9) Very simple tips for drawing a comic that will be published.
10) Working with editors from a cartoonist’s perspective.
10) b) Working with editors from an editor’s perspective (by my First Second editor, Calista Brill).
11) On “Drawing Styles.”
12) Dealing with discouragement (this is probably the most popular thing I’ve ever written XD).
13) On Comic Conventions.
14) On Being a Pro and Finishing that Comic When You Don’t Want To
15) How I Write My Comics
Okay, I think that’s it! Whew! The remainder of the Friends With Boys blogging archive is here. It has some other bloggings that aren’t advice-related (mostly ramblings about comics I like), if you’re interested. If you have any other comic-related subjects you’d like me to blog about, feel free to drop a suggestion in the ask box.
I hope this was helpful. Share and enjoy!
Updated 08/12/15
I added some of the more recent blogging I’ve done on making comics to my Making Comics Master Link List (1A, 14, & 15), and tossed a couple of dead links. If there is a comic making related question you’d like to see me write about, drop a question in my ask box.
The goddamn Rosetta Stone, people.

Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

A nice reference list for those that can’t just think of what word they are looking for. But remember that using “said” isn’t a bad thing. “Said” is universal and versatile and each of these words have their own meaning, so it isn’t always interchangeable.
When your art friends are improving at a breakneck pace and you’re still a mediocre piece of garbage
how do i learn how to storyboard comics
1. set the panels
the first version is the easier but also boring for the eye, the sequence rectangular-square-square and repetitive, try to use diagonal cut, open space and vertical cut to help the movement of the story and action.2. use movement to tell the story
3. Pose, Perspective and Line density
4. Framing and Silhouettebeing the file too big it’s a link format
In my opinion, those are the main rules to make a good storyboard. If you need more help ask awayMOD.gif
Sewing Tips #6 - Adding Stability to Pieces Without Wire
If you have a smaller to medium size piece on your plush, like an ear or open wings (notably MLP wings), you can avoid using wires for stability and instead use stiff felt sewn inside of the piece. This is especially desirable for any plush that will be for snuggling!

How to be Romanian on the Internet
Reply to everything with mdr or lol
Replace all the ch (soft k sounds) with k, e.g. smecher becomes smeker
In fact, if you have a sh sound, then you can replace that with a j, e.g. smecher –> smeker –> jmeker, but there are exceptions to the rule, e.g. the interjection si (and) becomes shi.
If you fancy being naughty, drop the diacritics. Romanian is a language where many words look the same, and sometimes even spelled the same, but the meanings change because of the diacritics.
Writing with poor grammar and spelling is highly encouraged.
Sudden capitalisation of words in English (or any language), to let them appear angry or just full of emotion. Emotions are highly encouraged.
Highlight important words and/or sentences by capitalising them, making them bold, crossing them out, using italics. Anything To MAke A(nTi) STATeMent!!!!!!!!
If you need to use emoticons
:) becomes :)))))) (the more ))) the better)
:( becomes :(((((( (the more ((( the better)
>:) becomes >>:)))))))
You can even drop the : and use the ))) or ((( alone, e.g. mie dor de tine((( or ce funny))))
and so on and so forth, be as inventive as possible because showing your feelings and loudness is very important
Do not use emoticons that don’t have emotional depths. The more depth, the better. You can even use pictures.
If you need to laugh, then you can do it in English (if you’re playing cool and lowkey) or in Spanish or Italian (highkey, e.g. jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja or hahahahahAHAHAHaHaAHHAHAHA).
If you find something particularly funny, then you can also say MOR (which means ‘i’m dying’ in Romanian and is also the first word in mdr, which means dying from laughter in both French and Romanian, widely used in these Internets).
Don’t bother using punctuation of any sort, because the way you write has to show the fluidity of your language and your personal liveliness.
But if you really must use punctuation, then you can forget to space your words, e.g. uite,,,,ke jmeker e or domnule,,,ce fain a fost cantecul..m-am distrat,,bre!!?!!!””11!! (It also means that you’re a fast typer)
Este (is, formal) becomes e (is, short, colloquial form)
Remember you either hate or love things, whether these are the haters, music you (don’t) like, other countries, your politicians, politics, your country, etc. These feelings are very strong, and you must show them at any cost because you have the right to express yourself!
At any cost, do NOT stay neutral.
Emphasise your statements by generously using symbols like exclamation points and question marks (if you use the Spanish ones, together with the Romanian ones, have some more gold)
If you write in English, you can follow these points, make sure that nouns that need to be capitalised remain uncapitalised, e.g. matters concerning nationalities or languages (e.g. Romanian –> romanian). Sometimes, you might want to throw in some Romanian into your English (hence, a new language, romgleza or Romglish), e.g. Hungarian –> hungarian –> ungarian. This also works with Romanian grammar - write English in Romanian grammar.
