The Two Types of Magic Wands
There are two main types of âmagicâ wands which I have observed in culture. The first kind is the more popular âactiveâ wand; a wand which enhances the power of the user, or hones a command into performing an action. It is the kind of wand which is actively used by an individual. The second kind of wand is a more dormant or passive wand; one which is not actively used or controlled by one who possesses it, but still performs the supernatural, to an extent.Â
Active wands are quite common in popular culture, and thus need no excessive description.
The âAmuletic Wandâ or âApotropaic Wandâ is a passive wand of Ancient Egyptian origin. It is believed to have been in use between circa 1980 and 1640 BCE. It is associated with the protection branch of magic, and individuals were buried with it. Despite the fact that much of Egyptian culture revolves around the concept of death and the afterlife, this wand was likely owned by an individual since birth. The wand has a bent shape, and is flat, like a boomerang. It is carved out of Hippopotamus tusk ivory, and inscribed with hieroglyphics which may translate to âprotection of day" and "protection of nightâ. The purpose of a wand of this nature is to protect a person from evil over the course of their life, and likely after death as well. The Hippopotamusâs tusks can represent the strength required to do so.Â
A much more recent example of the dormant wand is the Lavender Wand if 18th century, which is weaved from ribbons and stems of the lavender plant. This type of wand is associated with the branches of natural magic and good luck. It is a gift representing new beginnings and good luck, and is given to a bride on the day of their wedding. It is know to ward off moths, hence why it is stored in closets and drawers.Â
