I was pushing my son today to decode and just discouraging him and frustrating myself. I felt bad, thinking to myself: I'm not introducing a positive connection and I'm certainly not making reading fun that way. So I turned to the Internet.
Janae Jacobson has a good list of suggestions, esp. about incorporating multiple areas of development. Drill and practice has its uses but it certainly is not always fun, nor is it the only way to build skills. A more positive way is to target multiple domains of development through crafts, song, or movement—practicing skills and having fun all at the same time!
This requires more forethought than directly teaching phonemic awareness but the benefits are great and you won't dampen your child's enthusiasm in the process!
Just ordered this book! It looks at alternative approaches to conventional secondary education to motivate teens through school and, most importantly, nonschool learning experiences. Halpern surveys international horizons as well.
Written in the context of mathematics education but applies much more broadly, I think.
