Via LinkedIn:
"The incentive to go to trade school instead of college is getting stronger, says Bloomberg. State technical colleges are spending millions in advertising campaigns to train workers in high-demand jobs such as commercial truck driving, electrical linemen and diesel equipment technology. As the talent shortage for trades grows, some plumbers and electricians are earning more than $90,000 per year — often avoiding the large debt trap faced by many college graduates."
Some inspiration for your 2018 reading, if you’re looking!
I sorta want to do this, but I’m not sure if I’ll have a chance between school and reading “Bug in a Vacuum” 365 times.

Teachers: “standardized tests don’t work!”
Students: “standardized tests don’t teach us anything!”
Parents: “get rid of standardized tests!”
Pearson: “hey Governor, here’s $700,000.00”
Governor: “These tests remain the only way to truly ensure the proper education of our children!”
Is this about Indiana? This has to be about Indiana.
Stretch your mind and strengthen your relationships by stealing this simple way to learn from schoolkids, says education innovator and TED Prize winner Sugata Mitra.
So I'm sitting in my first substituting job of the school year (which happens to be an English class) and I overhear people talking about Spanish class. I say something in Spanish, and they wonder why I'm not their Spanish teacher.
Then I find out that the school does not have a Spanish teacher right now. The students weren't sure what happened to last year's teacher, but they say that the person hired to teach quit after two days. TWO DAYS!
I know I'm insane, considering
I have a part-time job in proofreading,
I am trying to develop a freelancing business,
I have a teaching license in English, not Spanish,
I have no lesson plans,
I hate grading and planning, and
My classroom management sucks,
But I'm really considering talking to the principal about possibly at least being long-term substitute for Spanish. I love Spanish more than English and should have stayed with that major 26 years ago.
Tell me I'm insane. I implore you.

Early School Start Times Are Holding Back Teens

“Each student has the opportunity to become an entrepreneur, politician, banker, and more. They are given $1,000 in Johnsonville cash to begin their lives. Students must buy a house or rent an apartment, earn wages, and manage their finances.” (Via TED-Ed)
Ugh. Channel One had a great segment on flexible classroom seating, "A new type of classroom setup", but I don't see a way to share it from their website and it's not on YouTube. I love the idea. I see they have a segment on flipped classrooms, too. Cool.

Concerning individual intelligence, are you an entity theorist or an incremental theorist?
Honestly, I think this is a conversation that teachers and students should have throughout one's academic career. #heidigranthalvorson
In 1785, John Adams wrote, “The whole people must take upon themselves the education of the whole people and be willing to bear the expenses of it. There should not be a district of one mile square, without a school in it, not founded by a charitable individual, but maintained at the public expense of the people themselves.”
