Beth Kempton is not ok Tumblr but her inspiration on Substack and Instagram cannot be matched. These #tinywinterpoem challenges are a great way to exercise the mind.
I have been slightly under the weather, but wrote a poem about blankets and what they are for as a writing challenge from Marie Gillan’s book, How to Write Poetry to Save Your Life.
Blankets are soft, pillowy dreams
holding us underneath,
curling up,
protecting us from sadness,
like a mother’s hug,
Tasseled edges
tickling our legs
like the fingers of your sibling or cousin.
Giggles start that cannot stop.
Stomach pains piercing with loud laughter
echoing out of our mouths
So big our cheeks burn
Smooth edges
wrapping our bodies
round and round us
warmth spreading
like the first sip of hot cocoa
Soft fur slides on our skin
cooling our emotions.
Comfort wraps us under and captures what comfort means to each of us.
In the foundational grades, 3-5th grade, journaling encourages self-expression.
Journaling gives students in grades 3-5 a safe space to share their thoughts and feelings personally. Students begin exploring their individuality at this age, and journaling helps them build confidence in expressing their ideas.
Journaling strengthens writing foundations. Consistent journaling helps students practice essential writing skills, such as organizing ideas, using proper punctuation, and experimenting with descriptive language. It's a low-pressure way for them to develop fluency and enjoy writing.
Journaling builds reflection and critical thinking skills. Journaling encourages students in grades 3-5 to reflect on their learning, write about challenges they've overcome, and connect personal experiences with academic topics. This type of journaling helps deepen understanding and develop critical thinking in an engaging and fun way.
Inquire for guidance on including consistent journaling in your classroom writing practice or how targeted journaling can be designed in your writing curriculum to strengthen the student's skills.
My Website and stack contain blogs on journaling and teaching writing about reading. You can subscribe to receive emails on both sites.

"Political" Fear
People like me are going to start dying,
or worse, no longer being allowed to live freely.
I don’t want to hide anymore.
Not the fact that I'm queer and trans,
Not the fact that my grandparents immigrated here from China,
not the fact that I support human rights, even if they aren’t simply my rights.
His presidency will usher in an age of fear,
Of darkness, Of destruction of the worst caliber.
Or maybe I am just scared.
Scared that this world I have barely touched will soon be ripped from my hands,
Simply because an old man and his friends hate people like me.
Because I am NOT white. Because I am NOT a proud American. Because I am NOT a straight person. Because I am NOT a real man. Because I am NOT the girl I was born as. Because I am NOT rich. Because I am NOT someone who fits into those little boxes.
Isn’t it horrible to think about?
If you do not check the boxes,
You. aren't. safe.
I especially fear for my brothers and sisters,
Who do not pass as well as I do.
For the trans kids who haven't got a chance to socially transition yet,
Who saw the TV glow but never got to explore. Who know there’s more to them but were silenced. Who just want to be happy.
For the queer kids who listen as the president of a country- OUR country attacks us,
Who sit in the closet waiting for it to be safe. Who shout explicitly about how they ARE queer. Who never know if they are free to love who they love.
For Chinese kids who never felt they lived up to their culture,
Who may not get the best chance to discover said culture. Whose skin color determines their treatment. Who feel so white they can’t claim they are Chinese.
For the families that struggle as I do,
Whose parents work harder than any CEO to put food on the table. Whose children study their asses off to get a job that won’t matter in ten years. Whose children get lost to the cycle of poverty in America.
I’m scared for us.
For all of us.
This poem is gut wrenching. You are seen and heard.
