The original Nick Fury is a white man leading the WW2 squad Howling Commandos, who you may have seen in the first Captain America movie.

This comic originates in 1961, and is the first version of the character. Later, in the late 60s as spy media becomes popular, Nick is reimagined as a spy, becoming head of the new organisation created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Shield, in Strange Tales #135, gaining the iconic eyepatch.

Fast forward to the 2000s. In addition to the main universe, referred to as earth 616, Marvel is experimenting with a new imprint, called Ultimate, set in a different universe. With this came some redesigns of established characters, including Nick, debuting in Ultimate X-Men #9.

He isn't quite Samuel L Jackson yet though, that comes later in Ultimate Spider-Man #24 & #26, by Brian Michael Bendis, where he was redesigned to look like a certain famous actor.

Legend has it that Samuel L Jackson then went into a comic store, happened across Ultimate Spider-Man and saw what was clearly his likeness, and got his lawyer to phone up Marvel. Marvel, wanting to avoid a lawsuit, claimed that they wanted him to play Nick Fury in a movie, and thus a deal was struck that if Marvel was going to make films, Nick would be there and he would be played by Samuel L Jackson.

Then the MCU comes out, it's largely based off the Ultimates and not the main 616, and Samuel L Jackson is Nick Fury. This becomes the version of Nick most people are familiar with, so around 2012, 2013, Marvel releases the comic Battlescars, which reveals that Nick Fury, the white one, had a child with a black woman named Nia Jones. This child, believing himself to be named Marcus Johnson, was actually named Nick Fury... Jr.

So basically, there are multiple versions of Nick Fury. There is the original white version of the character from 1961, Nick Fury Sr, there is the Ultimate Nick Fury, who is the main inspiration for MCU Nick Fury, and there's Nick Fury Jr, Sr's son who was created after it became clear audiences were a lot more familiar with Samuel L Jackson Nick Fury than they were original comics Nick Fury.

They blame Aerys, The Lannisters, Gregor Clegane, and Amory Lorch. You know? The guys actually responsible for their deaths…

It’s just funny how people have to bring down other characters who have never once been said to have been bad people by anyone in the narrative (no Bobby B doesn’t count as he knowingly hated Rhaegar) just to justify why their favorite character is better.

You know who doesn't think about Aerys?

Ned Stark.

The readers are literally in his head the entire first book and Ned Stark shows more contempt for Jaime Lannister breaking his vows and killing the king he swore to serve than the mad king that murdered his brother and father.

Why?

Because Jaime got away with it, just as the Lannisters got away and rewarded with the murders of Elia and her children.

That is why Oberyn used Tyrion's trial not only to kill the Mountain, but get actual justice for his murdered sister.

He wanted the fact that Tywin Lannister ordered the rape and murder of a princess and her children to be public and uncontested before the law and the eyes of the gods.

Do people really believe that the Martells would ignore the national humilation of Elia at Harrenhal, her and her children being held hostage by a mad man, and oh the thousands of Dornish spears dead because Rhaegar Targaryen wanted Lyanna Stark in his bed?

This was a nation founded on defying the tyranny of the dragonlords, killed them, and was only brought into the fold through a successful double marriage on their terms.

Thanks for the input, but it’s funny you bring up Ned. You’d think for a man whose sister was supposedly kidnapped and r@ped, he’d hate Rhaegar. Yet as you said most of the first book is told from his pov and not even in his thoughts does he think ill of Rhaegar. Only Aerys. And Jaime for breaking his oath. Which makes sense for Ned’s character as he is seen as a very honourable man. It makes sense that he would hate Jaime for not being punished for killing the king he swore to protect.

There is a lot about the tourney at Harrenhal and the rebellion that we don’t know. I believe Dorne would feel a bit scorned over Lyanna being crowned love and beauty over Elia, but I doubt they would voice it. Except for Oberyn who was very rash.

Though one slight like that (if you could call it that) wouldn’t make the Martells HATE the Targaryens. They themselves are descended from a Targaryen princess…

I don’t believe the Targaryens are at their core tyrannical, though each to their own opinion. Dorne was resistant to being brought into the fold, just like (oh would you look like that) the rest of the kingdoms. The only difference is that they managed to kill a dragon and one of Aegon’s queens.
