jackson is THE popular kid despite him having his own set of financial problems. he lives with a foster family because his parents died in a car accident when he was 11, but still grew up to be a well-mannered, cheerful boy

mature 21 year old who knows his strenghts and weaknesses. very motivated and hard working, but tends to fall for the bad type rather than good influences. is also too nice and sweet to point out other’s mistakes and flaws so he usually goes along with whatever his friends do. has always wanted to move out because as much as he loves his foster family, he knows that they struggle with their own swt of problems as well and feels like a burden now that college fees are piling up

mark is a millionaire, successful bachelor at the fine age of 29. recognised for his success in starting and building his own business at 22, took him only 7 years to reach his current success of a multi-million enterprise in Seoul trading and exporting goods.

is a very mysterious figure to the press because he is extremely private about his life outside of work. lives alone, has no known dating history, only known family is his family in USA ands seems to be completely disinterested in relationships under than a tight-knit group of friends. the press would love to get some dirt on this successful businessman.

jjp are mark’s close friends and a power couple of Korea ( lgbtq+ rs are supported in korea in this au ) and have always wanted him to look for a partner. yugyeom, mark’s other close friend, also wants him to not be so lonely anymore since he’s pushing 30 already.

meanwhile, youngjae + bambam are jackson’s best friends. youngjae’s fam is jackson’s foster fam while the three of them all attend Seoul University tgt. they’re close friends because they all share an interest in music and just enjoy each other’s company. they’re the same age in this au, so they met at the usual freshmen orientation drinking session and bambam almost puked on jackson’s crotch. ever since then, they’ve been inseparable.

youngbam are also well known in the school - youngjae for performing on stage every year at the annual talent show while bambam is known for his cool style and being the vice president of the dance club.

jackbamjae are joking arnd in their gc abt life after college when jackson finally tells them his plan to move out of his foster home after they finish their second year of college. yj ofc objects because he doesn’t see js as a burden, but respects jackson’s decision because js insists.

bambam suggests a sugar daddy website to get money. ofc, both of the other two question him on how he got to know such a site existed. he tells them that ten ( pres of the dance club ) got to know his bf through this site. bam tells them that it isn’t super shady or wtv and the men aren’t so bad at all

js says wtv and gives it a go, so he signs up with the help of bamjae. he has a basketball friendly match, so he rushes off after that

at the same time, mark’s bday is approaching. jjgyeom are planning a surprise for him and hopefully, it’ll include some sort of a date that mark will agree to go on. yugyeom had also come across the sugar daddy website by simply lurking on the nsfw side of the internet and jjp have learnt not to question him too much on what he does in his free time.

he found js’s profile and knowing mark’s type, immediately suggested the idea to jjp. jb, who’s been mark’s longest friend, says that mark might not completely be opposed to it because he knows that mark has been stressed lately and a way to let out that frustration would be good. jy, on the other hand, cautions that mark might not like the idea because mark is the kind of guy to value genuine relationships over meaningless hookups, not to mention paying someone for sex and whatnot. despite that, the three arrive at mark’s place on the night of his bday to surprise him

yg suggests the idea to mark after they’ve all had some dinner and mark obv gets mad at first. he says exactly what jy had said, but calms down after jjgyeom explain that they’ve all been worried about how he’s coping and don’t want him to be alone and stressed anymore. mark sees that his friends have good intentions and decides to give it a go, starting the convo with jackson over the website that night after all his friends have left

after about a week of weird dms and some actually good interactions over the site, jackson is about to give up because he hasn’t found anyone truly interested in talking and not just sex. then, he gets mark’s dm

the two hit it off immediately and they end up texting till 3am. they exchanged socmed accounts before they went to bed as well, and js decides to tell bamjae in the morning abt it.

they obv know who the hell mark tuan is and are freaking out over this. jackson rmbs that mark had told him not to spread this and realises that’s the reason why. he warns bamjae not to tell anyone, even their other close friends. bamjae suggest for him to keep texting and to even meet mark on the weekend.

they meet and it goes well and stuff, them slowly establishing their own sort of relationship. they’re more platonic than sexual most of the time, but they do look for each other when they’re horny and in need of release

one day, the press captures mark waiting for js after school at seoul uni + js getting into his car. they post an article with a caption insinuating that mark has a secret relationship, which he fires down with an instagram post about invading his privacy and posting false rumours. he does this because he’s scared that js might be affected.

js is affected, because he realises that he doesn’t mind being in a genuine relationship with mark at all. he tells bamjae ofc, and they help him to realise that he might have developed feelings for the older man. he freaks out because that isn’t part of the deal of being a sugar baby but he doesn’t want to cut mark off either

it’ll end happily, definitely, but the angst will come right after this and i hope it’ll be good :<

he majors in history ( to find out more about the past and humans ) and minors in literature where he learns about feelings through poetry

jb is a struggling film major who decided to do a project capturing human emotions and the different forms of them for his final year. he doesn’t like to stand out and has a tight-knit group of friends

but he’s also mildly known for his skills as a photographer and also as the cold, handsome senior in the Arts department

both of them live on campus and bunk with their respective besties, four to a dorm.

they meet in the school garden one day when jaebeom is there to do some shooting while jinyoung likes to spend some time sitting and observing the students

jb almost gets the perfect shot until jy pops his giant head up into the frame as he clicks the camera. jb ends up with his last frame being wasted and jy is confused why this strange human is shouting at him for walking

jb decides not to waste his time any longer talking to a clueless history major and walks off, huffing

jy feels inclined to follow him and he does, still confused but curious

he secretly follows jb all the way to the Arts block of the school and into the development room. jy is amazed by the glowing red bulbs and the dozens of pictures hanging from strings in the wall. he almost touches one when jb notices him

jb ends up getting even more frustrated and tries to chase jy out, but the poor, innocent man doesn’t even know why he’s so upset

jy decides to turn up at the development room the next day again, to the dismay of jb

“Why the hell are you here? I thought I made myself clear yesterday that I have no interest in seeing you again. Ever,” Jaebeom snaps at the pretty boy’s face. He still frowns the same, confused frown as yesterday and Jaebeom wants to strangle him.

“Why are you so...” he gestures wildly, imitating Jaebeom’s angry actions. Jaebeom rolls his eyes, feeling even more insulted.

“Angry? Upset? Frustrated? You ruined the only shot I had left by popping your gigantic head into the frame and tailed me to the development room. If you had touched any one of those pictures, you would’ve ruined a week of hard work in a second. Of course, I’m angry,” Jaebeom grits out, trying not to raise his voice in the middle of the hallway.

The man blinks at him, before he asks the dumbest question he’s ever heard a college student ask. “What is ‘angry’? Could you define it for me?”

Jaebeom really wants to slap the shit out of this man.

Calmly as he can, he replies, “It’s like when someone steals something from you and you feel like kicking them in the balls. Or, when you spend the whole night working on an essay and accidentally click ‘delete’. Do I really need to be explaining this right now? I have to develop a new roll of film,”

“Oh. My apologies. I haven’t fully grasped the definitions of human emotions yet so it’s hard for me to understand how you feel. Could I repay you somehow so you don’t kick me in the balls?” the man asks, completely straight-faced and serious.

Jaebeom lets out a half-scoff, half-laugh sound. “You say that as if you’re not human. You can pay me back with a-”

“I’m not,”

“What?” Jaebeom asks, unsure if this man is borderline crazy or actually serious. Considering the fact that he’s a twenty-plus year old and doesn’t comprehend the concept of feelings, he could be telling the truth, Jaebeom thinks.

“I’m not human. I’m from the sky. A Sky God, to be exact,” the man says cheerfully, as if he’s proud of himself. Jaebeom is awfully skeptical by now, but he can’t seem to think of any other reason why this stranger wouldn’t be able to grasp the concept of feelings. He’s read about a condition called Alexithymia, but that should only apply to his own feelings, not Jaebeom’s.

“That’s a pretty bold claim. How can I believe you?” Jaebeom asks, curious. If this stranger really was a Sky God who had no understanding of feelings, he would probably be useful as a model for Jaebeom’s project.

“Meet me at the rooftop of the dorms at midnight?” he asks, genuine. Jaebeom is still wary but his interest has been piqued, hence he agrees.

“I’ll see you then.” He lowers into a perfect, ninety degree bow and almost head butts Jaebeom’s crotch. Jaebeom is surprised and jumps back, clitching his camera close to his chest. The man happily walks off, unaware of Jaebeom’s confusion.

“See...you...?” Jaebeom mumbles to himself, shaking his head. He wonders just what he had gotten himself into.

jaebeom is a half-breed werewolf. his dad was a hunter who met his mother while she was shifting and they somehow fell in love and had him

half-breeds are kind of shunned in the magic community because human blood is known as ‘contaminated blood’ hence jaebeom kind of hates everyone and rathers be alone. he has only an acquaintance at work, choi youngjae, who’s nice enough to try to socialise with jaebeom even though the older has shut everyone in the museum out

jinyoung is a grim reaper - not only for humans but for the magic community as well. it’s not common to be assigned to work for both and he knows he has to be some horrible criminal in order to be sentenced to such painful work

he only remembers bits and pieces of his past life, the main thing being a werewolf. that’s the reason why he’s been keeping an eye on jaebeom ever since he realised that a werewolf was in the same city as him.

they bump heads, literally, on the street

jinyoung, obviously, had planned it but jaebeom was an unsuspecting werewolf who was simply in a rush to go check out an art piece the museum was interested in purchasing

jaebeom is immediately suspicious when jinyoung recognises what he is

jinyoung, being oh-so cryptic, invites him to meet at a nearby library. it’s kind of where jinyoung lives ( imagine a place like the grim reaper’s in goblin, those hidden wall kind of things )

he disappears and leaves jaebeom with a note that jaebeom decides to stuff into his pocket and ignore

but ofc he can’t just ignore it so he caves in a visits a few days after

jinyoung is waiting there for him and sneaks up on him, resulting in jaebeom reacting in self-defence and pining him on the floor

they eventually move to jinyoung’s house and jinyoung reveals that he’s actually in need of jaebeom’s help. part of being a grim reaper ( in this au, anyway ) is to not only help souls pass over but to deal with any unnatural causes of death

recently, there’s been a serial murderer of some sorts on the loose and jinyoung has reason to believe it’s a werewolf or a pack of them

jaebeom obv looses his shit because he hates anything to do with his own kind and stomps out of there

but jinyoung continuously reappears in his life until the werewolf finally caves in

‪jaebeom hates crowds. it’s all skin-to-skin contact with sweaty strangers, a cacophony of noises that send his senses into overdrive. it doesn’t help that his ears or nose are more sensitive than the average human being’s, nor does it‬ help that the upcoming full moon is making him even jumpier than usual.

using his broad shoulders and strength, he pushes his way through the crowd, ignoring the curses and glares he gets. he keeps his head hung low, his messy fringe creating a curtain over his eyes. still, he pushes through the sea of people until he can finally breathe in fresh air instead of body odour and musky heat.

the building he’s looking for is about another street down, about a good five minutes away, and the sweltering heat beating down on his back puts him in a worse mood than he’s already in. still, he trudges on with his hands stuffed deep into his pockets, eyes set on the gravel below him.

of course, not looking up has it’s obvious consequences, and it’s not long before jaebeom feels the tell-tale hardness of another head collide against his.

it happens in a split second. his sunglasses slide off the bridge of his nose and to the floor, pathetically clattering against the gravel. the man looks up at him and his pupils zero in on jaebeom’s exposed icy blue left eye, sending him into a state of alarm.

immediately, he reaches up to cover it with a hand, right eye still trained intently on the man’s expression. his hands are clasped around the spine of his book, a thick leather-bound book with scraps and markers sticking out of the side. his eyes are soft and round, pink lips pursed into a light frown which confuses jaebeom even more.

“watch where you’re going,” jaebeom growls, trying to distract the man from staring even more. the man says nothing, still. he bends down and picks up jaebeom’s glasses, calmly wiping the black lenses with his clean white shirt. holding it up, he frowns at jaebeom, who frowns back.

“aren’t you taking this back, werewolf? you need it to hide that eye of yours, don’t you?” the man asks as if it isn’t a big deal, as if it’s an every day topic.

jaebeom sputters, caught totally off guard. who is this man? “what the hell are you talking about?”

the mysterious stranger nods towards his covered eye, unimpressed with jaebeom’s effort in lying. “i know what your kind looks like, though i haven’t seen one so up close in a century,”

“a century...?” jaebeom trails off, hand slowly dropping from his face out of shock. how the hell is that possible? what the heck? unless...

“what are you?” jaebeom aggressively questions. the man shrugs, annoyingly nonchalant, as he takes jaebeom’s hand and presses the sunglasses into it.

“you’ll know soon enough. when the time comes, we’ll meet again. i’ve decided it,” the man says, a small, irritatingly knowing smile on his lips. he brushes past jaebeom in his surprised daze, disappearing into the crowd that jaebeom came from.

when he snaps out of it, he’s standing alone in the middle of the pavement, hand holding his glasses out like an idiot. he quickly puts them back on, mind snapping back to attention as he slowly goes over whatever the hell that was.

glancing back, his mind races with possibilities. another half-blood? or a pure? a fey, maybe? or a wizard. maybe a warlock, seems nosy enough to be one. maybe i could track him down. if only i had something left-

it was as if the man had known jaebeom would have turned to his instincts. on the floor, lay a sleek black card embossed with silver writing.

“wolf...boy...?” jaebeom mumbles, fingers running over the neat letters. it’s slightly warm as if fresh out of press, and jaebeom wouldn’t be surprised if this PJY dude had burnt it on the spot.

a part of jaebeom - his primal, savage wolf half - tells him not to do it because it could be a trap. the other part - the ever-curious human half - tells him to go dashing to the library right this instant to look for this man and demand answers.

instead of deciding because jaebeom loves being spontaneous and doing whatever the hell he likes, he shoves the card deep into his pocket and chooses to ignore it. he trudges on despite the nerves prickling at his spine, as if someone is watching him.

better to blend in than make a break for it. calm down, you can take him if he returns. just move along and ignore it, he tells himself.

but he can’t ignore it. for the rest of the day, the new prickly feeling of the edges of the card bugs him through his jeans, but he somehow can’t bring himself to throw it away. it feels heavy, like stone, way more than a stupid piece of card stock should be.

the four seasons are ruled by four different rulers - the King of Spring, Queen of Summer, Queen of Autumn and King of Winter. jinyoung is the King of Spring, inherited the throne early because his father died due to an illness and he’s the youngest ruler among the four

imagine a maleficent-like place ( The Moors ) where there are sprites, pixies, little trolls and stuff like that

jaebeom is an unsuspecting film student who gets too into photography sometimes and often trips over his own feet

jaebeom has a project to finish and is busy taking photos in a forest that he’s spending the weekend nearby 

stumbles upon a weird tree branch that resembles a door handle and ofc, he opens it

ends up falling face flat on a flower bed, landing himself in a room with mirrored walls and a floor completely covered in flowers of different kinds

him being him, he quickly snaps photos of it and is happily about to leave when BAM park jinyoung enters the room

jinyoung has a hatred for humans because he thinks they’re foolish and useless due to a lack of magic in their blood. he pins jaebeom to a wall with a flick of his wrist and starts to question the man

he also threatens to erase his memory

but at the same time, jinyoung is curious because the door handle was not supposed to be visible to anyone who doesn’t have any magic / doesn’t belong to the Realm

jaebeom, in his panicked state, offers to do jinyoung’s bidding for as long as he wants him to, as long as jaebeom’s camera and memories are untouched

jinyoung agrees because he wants to investigate more about jaebeom’s identity and how it was possible for a mere human to see the portal

and obv the plot will develop into : jinyoung bullying jaebeom, jaebeom being stubborn > eventually something happening between them that makes them realise feelings > jj pining > jjp being gross > backstory comes to haunt them > angst > eventual happy-ish ending ( or maybe not )

an extract from their first convo 🍓

“Excuse me? I’m not some ‘lowly human’. I have a name, y’know. And what are you supposed to be, huh? An elf?” the fool smirks, looking pointedly at Jinyoung’s ears. The King of Spring scowls and tightens the invisible grip he has on the human’s wrist, making the man yelp in pain. 

“I’m not an elf, I’m a faerie and I’m the King of Spring in the Seasonal Realm. This is my room and you,” Jinyoung points a slender finger right at Jaebeom’s nose bridge, “have trespassed into it. Now, I’ll have no choice but to erase your memories and toss you back where you came from,” 

“What? No! There will be no tossing or erasing of memories at all, Your Highness or whatever it is,” the man rudely retorts, his chin jutting out in defiance. Jinyoung wonders how stupid must a species really be to still fight back when they’re being pinned three feet off the floor by a magical creature.

“You can’t win me, you buffoon. I’ll erase your memories in the blink of an eye and you wouldn’t even know it,” Jinyoung spitefully spits back, pressing the tip of his finger into the forehead of the man. His nails are sharp and form a crescent-shaped mark in the pale skin, though he doesn’t push in any further. 

It seems to work in intimidating the man because the fiery defiance in his eyes have burnt out and turned into the sort of fear that Jinyoung has come to occasionally enjoy. But the fear quickly goes away and becomes determination, and it makes Jinyoung even more intrigued by this strange man who had stumbled into his room.

“I’ll work for you. Here. In this...realm or wherever we are,” he offers. Jinyoung can’t help his snort. 

“What makes you think you’re capable enough? I have plenty of assistants and servants already, a human wouldn’t be much of help,” Jinyoung points out. “Besides, humans aren’t really welcomed in my Kingdom,” 

“Are you sure it isn’t just you who hates humans?” he replies dryly. “I can arrange your papers or write your documents, stuff like that. I’m sure faeries don’t care much for paperwork, right?” 

Well, he wasn’t wrong. There were plenty of instances where he had walked in on his assistants messing around instead of completing simple documents or replying to letters. Faeries were proud creatures who hated doing anything they deemed below them and sitting at a desk all day using a typewriter wasn’t very prestigious. 

“It’ll be tough work and you’ll probably be bullied,” Jinyoung says. The man manages a half-shrug with his arms bound behind him. Jinyoung notices cuts on his cheek and neck, probably from the flowers, and wonders again why this strange man doesn’t seem to mind.

“I’ll do anything as long as you keep my memories and camera untouched and I won’t say a thing to anyone. If you want, we can make a blood oath or something like that,” the man suggest. Jinyoung flicks his wrist again and the man slowly floats down to the floor, landing lightly on his feet. 

“How do you know about blood oaths?” Jinyoung questions, suspicious. He rolls up his sleeve and holds out his forearm, and the human does the same. The man’s arms are thick and veiny, tanner and rougher than Jinyoung’s. 

“I read about mythical creatures and magic a lot. You got a knife?” 

Jinyoung clicks his tongue, annoyed that the man would think so low of him. He simply swipes a finger across the man’s forearm, making the slightest of cuts, before he does the same. The man frowns at the pain, but moves to cross their forearms together. 

Before their arms touch, Jinyoung grabs his wrist and pulls the man close, staring right into his eyes. “If you break this, I’ll make sure the blood flowing in your veins get poisoned and you die a horrible, painful death in the forest,” 

The man breaks into a grin. “Relax, pointy. I’m not an idiot. So, deal?” 

Doubt creeps into his chest but curiosity triumphs over it. He thinks he might probably face backlash from some of his people and it would probably be quite problematic in the long run, but this human being had been able to see the entrance of the portal and it isn’t something that’s normal. 

“Deal.”

the hotel is a place for souls that are waiting to be sorted out to either heaven or hell. it’s the last place for them to enjoy life so it’s hella fancy and stuff. it’s built on this huge floating cloud thing and hidden by other clouds.

the people who work there are souls that have an equal balance of sins and good deeds and don’t belong in either heaven or hell. they are physcially unable to stay in the realms for over a few hours, or else they’ll be banished to another realm - Nowhere.

Nowhere is basically a void, where there is nothing to do and you’ll spend the rest of your life in solidarity.

no one knows how the hotel came about, just that it’s been around for years and the staff have been dead for a long time. some retire and stay in the hotel, while others devote their lives to helping other souls.

since those who work there are neither angels nor devils, they have half wings - one angel and one devil. their wings are hidden since they have no use for them while at the hotel but they can summon them at any time

Plot !!

jaebeom dies in a car accident so he’s q confused when he turns up at the hotel

he thinks he’s being pranked or something and doesn’t know that he’s dead so he tries looking for someone to tell him where he is

bumps into youngjae, who is the receptionist of the hotel. jaebeom obviously doesn’t believe youngjae when he says that jaebeom is dead and he’s a soul waiting to be sorted out to heaven or hell. he has a minor freakout and runs back to his room

lives the day in denial because he didn’t even know what had happened after he car hit him. he thinks of his parents and friends back home and dearly misses them, so he decides to try and run away

he sneaks out in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep ( souls don’t need sleep but it’s just part of their daily life still ) and just kinda yeets himself off the cloud

he obviously ends up regretting it because there’s nothing below them ( Nowhere, but he doesn’t know about that either ) and screams helplessly

he thinks he’s gonna die until he’s saved by a flying figure. it kinda scares him even more because he can only see the figure’s demon wing and thinks he’s gonna be taken to hell forever

instead, the figure drops him back at the hotel and swoops down to see him. it’s a handsome young man dressed in a sort of skin-tight suit made of black scales. jaebeom is entranced and kind of makes a fool of himself

the figure doesn’t bother and instead scolds him, saying that he ‘shouldn’t risk his life for that when he still has a chance’. he then flies off into the back of the hotel and disappears behind the clouds, leaving jaebeom to wander back to his room for a restless night of sleep

he wakes up and decides to ask around for help from youngjae, since he’s the only one jaebeom has talked to. youngjae introduces him to some of the other staff ( got5 and some other jyp idols ) and tells him of the hotel’s background

jaebeom asks about the figure and youngjae informs him of jinyoung, who’s the manager of the hotel and is in charge of flying between the different planes to assign souls. it’s s tough job and he leaves early in the morning and only gets back way past midnight.

jaebeom decides to look for jinyoung again to thank him and also apologise ?? probably. so he waits for jinyoung to return that night

a little part of their convo

“Hey! Jinyoung, right? I’m Im Jaebeom - that guy you saved yesterday from dying?” Jaebeom greets hurriedly as soon as he sees Jinyoung land on the cloud. The younger man frowns at him, carefully wrapping his wings around him in some sort of shield.

“Okay, what do you want, Jaebeom-ssi? To jump off again?” Jinyoung asks, a little hostile and wary. It’s Jaebeom’s turn to frown this time. He doesn’t mean any harm and hasn’t done anything to hurt Jinyoung, so why is he so...aggressive?

“Nothing! I mean no harm to you. I just wanted to thank you for saving me, is that wrong?” Jaebeom asks. He feels slightly wronged and it kind of hurts just a little.

“It’s my job, you don’t have to thank me. Besides, I have to save you or I’ll be punished,” Jinyoung replies, letting his wings drop tiredly. They fold behind him and Jaebeom watches as some feathers fall off, the edges singed with dying flames.

“Punished? Isn’t that a little harsh for a single soul?” Jaebeom asks, attempting to make the conversation last or at least a little friendlier.

Jinyoung snorts, looking him dead in the eye. “You really don’t know, do you?”

“No? Know what? Am I supposed to know something else?” Jaebeom asks, confused. Jinyoung sighs - an exasperated one that surprises Jaebeom. Jinyoung immediately moves towards him, hands reaching for Jaebeom’s arm.

Jaebeom yelps in surprise as he tears off the sleeve of the flimsy material, jerking back. “What the hell are you doing? Don’t-”

Instead of his usual pale, unblemished skin, there’s a slit of white with a weird symbol in the centre. Jaebeom presses shaky fingers to it, attempting to wipe off the mark but he can’t.

Jinyoung rolls up his own sleeve, and Jaebeom sees a matching mark in black. He glares up at Jaebeom, pointing at their wrists. The black and white contrast against their equally white skin and the marks seem to gleam mysteriously under the moonlight. “Don’t you see? You’re not just ‘a single soul’, you’re different,”

jaebeom is the classic, biker bad boy with leather jackets, slicked back hair and multiple piercings and tattoos. he’s been kicked out of school on the day that time stops so he’s been having it pretty shitty

lives on his own so he isn’t too worried about family, just friends and maybe his pet cats

actually really smart and has a talent for the arts, like photography and music, except that his teachers don’t allow him to go anywhere near his passion unless he passes all their classes and has a good conduct

just doesn’t see the use of studying and instead prefers to go about and take photos or produce tracks, resulting in him skipping most of his classes

jinyoung, on the other hand, is a top student of his school. he’s smart, athletic enough to have a hoard of girls after him, and is pretty well off.

his interests are science and technology, so he likes to invent things in his spare time. he was in the middle of purchasing some parts from a store for his latest invention when time stopped

his iq is amazingly high and he’s very observant. jinyoung is also calm and collected in his own sense, so he doesn’t really freak out much. instead, he starts thinking of theories and possible reasons why

so time sorta messed up and stopped, resulting in everyone around them stopping, too. they were both living their daily lives in different parts of Seoul when everything around them just froze in the blink of an eye.

jaebeom ends up wandering the streets of seoul and his feet subconsciously bring him to his favourite spot - an ice cream shop by the corner. jinyoung also ends up there since the store he was at earlier is right next door.

their first meeting is pretty disastrous considering jaebeom’s bad mood and jinyoung’s endless ideas that he won’t stop talking about. they end up lowkey fighting but later form a truce so that they can find out the reason why all of this is happening.

jinyoung brings jaebeom over to his place, where he has all his equipment and stuff. he can’t google anything since the internet stopped, so he had jaebeom flip through all his science books on time and whatnot

jaebeom notices a timer that’s printed on his wrist - 19:23:59:43. he goes to check jinyoung’s wrist and sees the same time. they figure out it’s the days, hours, minutes and seconds they have left to reverse or stop whatever this is

they decide to go explore Seoul for clues instead, since jinyoung’s books aren’t really helping much if they don’t know what to do with the information. on their way, they encounter someone that looks like an exact replica of jaebeom’s classmate, younghyun.

jaebeom obviously goes up to say hi like an idiot and nearly gets his head chopped off but jinyoung thankfully saves him in time. younghyun looks the same, but he really isn’t. jinyoung explains that he’s probably from another dimension with a different time, and a portal of sorts is probably nearby.

jaebeom agrees to try and fend younghyun off while jinyoung goes to look for the portal. jaebeom doesn’t really succeed but he does manage to subdue younghyun by locking him up in a nearby shop. jinyoung manages to find the rip in space and they step through it, bringing them to another dimension

so throughout this whole fic, they just kinda keep travelling to different dimensions and meeting different versions of each other and their friends and family. time passes differently in those dimensions and the timer adjusts accordingly, though the 20 day limit is still the same.

so jaebeom is a detective - one of the best in the industry and highly respected. he’s sharp with his wits, hard-headed ( hot-headed too ! ) and only ever believes what he can see and what his gut tells him.

he’s been living like this since he was a teen and it’s one of his major character traits. he tends to doubt everyone when he first meets them due to this + the nature of his job so it takes a long ass time to gain his trust.

jaebeom develops a soft spot for people that he can trust with his life and he keeps them close, always being the protective father figure in his tight-knit circle of friends.

jinyoung, on the other hand, is a mentalist. he knows how people tend to think and is crazily genius.

he can calculate the highest probability of your next move and knows exactly how to react so that he can manipulate you into doing what he wants. it doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy, though - he just likes to have his own fun sometimes.

he doesn’t have an actual job, just goes around helping those who know about him and hire him to help. it’s mostly a consultant kinda gig, and jinyoung rolls with it because it pays well.

so one day, jaebeom gets assigned a huge serial killer case. the killer was all the way back from 10 years ago, when jaebeom was still a teen. it was his father’s last case which he had never managed to close before mysteriously dying a few weeks later. the killer has been active again recently, already committing two homicides in the span of a week.

jaebeom is convinced that the killer is linked to his father’s death and he is hella determined to solve it and close it once and for all. the bureau knows how pressured jaebeom will be on this case and his friends, jackson and yugyeom, seek help from jinyoung, who is the only one who can possibly predict the killer’s next move.

jaebeom, of course, is not happy. he feels like they’re pitying him because of his connection to the case and he doesn’t like the idea of sharing highly coverted information with a complete stranger, no matter how smart he is.

jackson being jackson still pushes him to at least give jinyoung a chance and jaebeom begrudgingly agrees to meet the man for the first time.

a little part of their first convo

“I’m only showing you what I want you to see, Jaebeom-ssi, not what I really am or how I think. I thought you were sharp enough to pick that up.” Jinyoung pouts at the end, plump bottom lip jutting out as if Jaebeom has disappointed him in someway.

It makes Jaebeom feel as if he’s some sort of toy that’s been placed in front of a kid and for once, he feels immensely insecure. It annoys him like crazy.

“Maybe I’m just acting dumb to appease you, Jinyoung-ssi,” Jaebeom retorts, trying his best to keep his voice cool and collected. By the light tilt of Jinyoung’s lips, he doesn’t believe Jaebeom one bit.

“Lies don’t work with me, Jaebeom-ssi. You seem to keep forgetting that~” Jinyoung singsongs, his voice sending a chill down Jaebeom’s spine.

They’re seated in a cramped booth of some old diner, the faux leather seats squeaking uncomfortably as Jaebeom shifts his weight just the slightest. Jaebeom is the detective here but he feels like he’s being interrogated at his own station. Is this how all those criminals feel like? he vaguely wonders.

“Your magic doesn’t work on me either, so stop beating around the bush,” Jaebeom states, leaning forward and narrowing his eyes and Jinyoung. He’s riled up and he can tell how much Jinyoung is enjoying this, how much he loves the aspect of teasing the detective and pressing all the wrong buttons.

“Wrong again. Not magic - mind,” Jinyoung says, leaning forward to match Jaebeom. Their faces are barely twenty centimetres apart now and Jaebeom can smell the younger man’s minty breath and light cologne. Jaebeom tries hard not to let it affect him.

“I’m a mentalist, remember? I know exactly,” Jinyoung lifts a finger and taps the side of Jaebeom’s head twice - feather-light touches that send Jaebeom’s mind into overdrive. “how you think.” The other man’s voice is barely above a whisper and it sends involuntary shivers through Jaebeom again.
